This is quite a straight forward episode where I talk about the tiny steps way to write that my book coach, Sam Osbiston, and the leader of the Confident Creative Club, Helen Redfern, introduced me to. It is a way to break big tasks down into small steps that are more manageable and we can trick our brain into making progress towards the end goal. We might have a wonderful thing to bring to the world but because the end seems so far away we don't start. I have stopped myself in the past for fear of looking stupid, fear of being the fat person who couldn't do something and not wanting to be disappointed by not achieving the goal. I have missed out as a result. It was Sam's small steps approach that helped me write my book. It was the same when I started the Meeting of Minds podcast. It can help you start a healing journey, or anything else for that matter. Don't focus on the end and what it's going to take to get there, just take tiny steps. We can't change others but we can change ourselves. We can do better for ourselves. We can honour ourselves. And we can do that by getting started and taking tiny steps. Helen Redfern created the Confident Creative Club in 2021 and it has become a haven for a bunch of fabulous, sensitive, like-minded people. The success of the club is down to Helen's open, honest and down-to-earth approach to the messy process of being creative. No beating yourself up is allowed; it's about building confidence one step at a time. I absolutely love being a part of it. Helen talks with so much wisdom in our conversation and that's because she is walking the path of confidence building too. She is a true beacon of light for people looking for her kind of care and attention. She encourages everyone to do what you love, embrace who you are, with your personality, with your writing voice. Just be you. I must confess: I was dying to post this episode the second we finished recording it.Many of you have heard me recommend Helen's helpful YouTube videos as well as her encouraging online presence overall. I loved these videos and suggestions so much this year, and they were a delight to my audience as well. And yet, there was a price to pay to create at the pace Helen was setting. This week, we look at the pros and cons of maintaining a prolific online presence alongside your writing practice. Helen shares generously about her thought process and the results of experimenting with stepping back from the online world for a time.As we get closer and closer to the holidays, the boundaries we choose to set around being online are ever more important. How visible to we want to be, and at what cost to our creativity? The need for rest and recuperation is so important, and we explore all of the pressures and benefits we gain as writers from sharing our journey.I so look forward to the conversation that I expect this episode will generate- these questions don't get answered in a day, but we can all benefit by reflecting on them together.Visit this episode's blog post here: https://www.secretlibrarypodcast.com/episodes/helen-redfern-s3-ep12 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today I’m chatting to Helen Redfern, a self-confessed unconfident writer, who is constantly pushing herself to become braver with her writing and creativity. As you can imagine, we dove right into the topic of creating confidence to share your creative work with the world, and the role social media plays in that (both positive and negative). We also spoke a lot about Instagram and some important realisations Helen had after taking a long break from showing up there (something I’ve been considering a lot for myself, too). Welcome to episode 5 of series 3! We are so excited to be back in your earbuds sharing all kinds of good things and an interview with the very clever Abbie Melle. A lifestyle, interiors and travel photographer, Abbie is a regular contributor to Country Style magazine, has a huge and super engaged following on Instagram and her visual storytelling there is super inspiring. Lucky for us, in this episode Abbie shares some advice on creating engaging IG posts and stories and what inspires her work. Thank you as always to our series sponsor Country Style Magazine.  Sophie's Top 5 Hurry Slowly podcast by Jocelyn K. Glei (@jkglei) who also writes a great newsletter. I particularly loved the 'anti-time management' episode with Oliver Burkeman. Girls Night In newsletter; lots of good things to read, listen to, think about and practice on a Friday night - when you'd prefer to stay in. All the things that Helen Redfern does; I love her blog, A Bookish Baker , her Instagram feed, the sound of her ecourse and her newsletter. So much goodness here and she puts a lot of effort and herself into all she does. Food 52 Cookbook club. - such a fun idea and great way to build an online community with like minded people. Our Road Trip playlist on Spotify. Some fun tunes to sing along to on long car trips! Skye's Top 5 The Guilty Feminist podcast is equal parts thoughtful and hilarious. Thankyou Monique Bowley at the ABC for the recommendation. And another that came from here which is full parts hilarious is The Baby Sitters Club Club for my fellow 90’s kids who loved Ann M. Martin’s Baby Sitter’s Club books. We have known about this for a while but I have to say Instagram’s new function to follow hashtags has given me the ability to search for new people to follow once again. We have recently been (so kindly) on the receiving end of a voucher to The Dinner Ladies – a wonderful organisation in Sydney who organise home cooked meals, fresh and frozen for anyone in need. A very thoughtful gesture for anyone who is in hospital, or just had a baby, been injured or having a tough time. And finally I cannot get enough of roadside flowers at the moment. Florence and I have spend many long hours in the car and my eyes are always drawn roadside. I'm always thinking, what can I forage here? It is endless and I love it.
