In this sermon, Pastor Jeremy delves into the Lord's Prayer, beginning with its context in the Sermon on the Mount. He explains that Jesus addressed a diverse audience, including Jewish worshippers, Jewish elites, and pagans. Before introducing the Lord's Prayer, Jesus corrected misconceptions about prayer, warning against making it a spectacle (Matthew 6:5-6) or engaging in meaningless repetition (Matthew 6:7-8). Pastor Jeremy emphasizes that the Lord's Prayer is not meant to be recited mindlessly, but rather serves as a template for personal, meaningful prayer. He illustrates this by showing how the line "Give us this day our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11) can be adapted to address current needs, such as transportation or employment. The sermon concludes by focusing on the opening line, "Our Father in heaven" (Matthew 6:9). Pastor Jeremy explains the revolutionary nature of addressing God as Father, especially in the context of distant, unassociated gods in Greek and Roman mythology. He highlights the perfect nature of God as our heavenly Father, contrasting it with imperfect earthly fathers, and encourages listeners to develop a personal relationship with God.

Human beings show a range of emotional attachment, affection, and infatuation often referred to as “love”. Love promotes long-lasting and secure relationships that involve nurturing and support. Biological mechanisms underlying such behavior involve ancient neuropeptides and their receptors in the brain. These systems are also involved in reproduction, ranging from mating and pair-bonding, to giving birth and lactation. They shape the earliest experiences of all mammals and their mothers. The concept of love and how we experience it are affected by culture and its diverse societal norms. This symposium will explore the evolutionary roots of human love, compare human love to corresponding emotions in other animals, consider human conditions that prevent the expression of such feelings, and examine the key role of love and affection for our development and daily lives.  Series: "CARTA - Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny" [Humanities] [Science] [Show ID: 40506]

Human fathers exhibit hormonal shifts in testosterone, prolactin, and oxytocin, enabling flexible responses to parenting. In species with costly paternal care, these shifts balance mating and parenting efforts, suggesting evolved neuroendocrine capacities that support fatherhood. Today, fathers collaborate with mothers worldwide, though their roles vary across cultures and family systems, much as they likely did evolutionarily. Using research from the Philippines, Congo-Brazzaville, and the U.S., alongside cross-cultural data, this talk examines how men's hormonal physiology adapts to parenthood and influences family behaviors and bonds within diverse ecological and cultural contexts. The titi and owl monkeys of South America live in socially-monogamous groups where the male and female establish a pair bond and share parental duties. Why do males of these species mate in a monogamous relationship presumably foregoing other reproductive opportunities? And why are titi and owl monkey males such good fathers, investing heavily in the care of offspring that they cannot be certain they sired? Relying on ecological, behavioral and genetic data collected during 28 years from wild populations in Argentina, Peru and Ecuador. This lecture will discuss the role of food distribution, mate guarding and infant care in the evolution of pair-bonds, monogamy and paternal care. First up this week, International News Editor David Malakoff joins host Sarah Crespi to discuss the most recent developments in U.S. science under Donald Trump's second term, from the impact of tariffs on science to the rehiring of probationary employees at the National Science Foundation.   Next, we tackle the question of extra-pair paternity in people—when marriage or birth records of parentage differ from biological parentage. Contributing Correspondent Andrew Curry writes about researchers looking into the question of how often children are genetically unrelated to their presumed fathers by using genealogy and genetic testing.   Finally, Susanne Schweizer, Scientia associate professor at the University of New South Wales, talks about her article on intrusive thoughts in the perinatal period as part of a special issue on women's health in Science Advances. Almost all pregnant and recent mothers experience intrusive thoughts about harm coming to their offspring. Schweizer and colleagues suggest gaining a better understanding of intrusive thoughts during this highly predictable window could help explain the phenomenon more broadly.   This week's episode was produced with help from Podigy.   About the Science Podcast Learn more about your ad choices.
