Did you know about 80% of employees will become parents at some point in their careers, but many do not feel supported? A third do not even think they will return to work after parental leave. And of those who do, many leave within a year. Regardless of the path they choose, one thing is clear: A lot of parents feel that starting a family has at least temporarily derailed their career. Therefore, companies need most: resilience, empathy, focus, crisis management, and a long-view perspective. Their book invites leaders to reimagine working parents not as a liability but as an untapped competitive edge. Written for executives and managers, The Parenthood Advantage explores how companies can build cultures that value parents—and thrive because of it. But the book also serves as a roadmap for parents and soon to be parents—male and female—who want to know how best to prepare for leave and how to transition back to the workplace smoothly. Some of the actionable insights for parents include:Set expectations early: Initiate a conversation with your manager three to four months before leave starts. That allows time to plan coverage, discuss communication preferences (clean break vs. lightly looped in), and begin a dialogue that makes the transition smoother on both sides.Know your company's policy around parental leave: And do not assume your manager does. Not all HR departments prioritize equipping managers with this information. Share with them what you learn.Schedule a resolute “returnship” conversation: Get it on the calendar before you leave so that it can take place a couple of weeks prior to coming back. This is a chance to check in on projects and ask for any flexibility you may need (like adjusted days or hours). https://booklife.com/project/the-parenthood-advantage-102115http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

44. When was the last time you felt truly supported at work? Not just managed or directed, but genuinely seen, backed up, and cared for by someone who gets it?If you're drawing a blank, you're not alone. This episode tackles something affecting millions of working parents but rarely gets the attention it deserves: workplace loneliness and isolation. In May 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a warning that should have shaken us all: America is facing an epidemic of loneliness—and it's a public health crisis affecting our physical health as much as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Working parents are feeling this most acutely. Especially moms navigating the "motherhood penalty"—expected to be fully committed to our careers while being primary caregivers at home. But here's what I've discovered through nearly a decade of job sharing: We're not meant to do this alone. And with job sharing, we don't have to.In Episode 44, you'll discover: Why workplace loneliness is hitting working parents hardest (and the shocking health impacts) How job share partners become true life partners—not just work coverage Real stories of job sharers supporting each other through family crises and major life challenges Why job share teams weather uncertainty differently than solo workers How genuine partnership at work ripples into every area of your life—parenting, marriage, caregivingThe truth: Job sharing isn't just about splitting tasks or working fewer hours. It's about shared purpose, mutual care, and revolutionary partnership in a world where too many of us are isolated.Your job share partner becomes the person who notices when you're struggling, steps in without being asked, and genuinely wants you to succeed—professionally AND personally.Resources & Links Mentioned:U.S. Surgeon General's Report: Our Epidemic of Loneliness & Isolation, 2023Join our weekly newsletter (biweekly this summer!): workmuse.com/newsletterGrab your FREE Guide to Job Sharing

How do you juggle a high-powered global career and single motherhood — and still show up for your child with presence and purpose? In this inspiring episode, Justin speaks with Sarah Armstrong, Vice President of Global Marketing Operations at Google and author of The Art of the Juggling Act: A Bite-Sized Guide for Working Parents. Sarah shares practical insights on setting boundaries, overcoming mum guilt, building a support network, and navigating divorce with grace — all while raising a well-rounded daughter. KEY POINTS: Setting and protecting boundaries is critical to successful work-family balance. Communicating your boundaries to others is as important as establishing them. Mum guilt is real — but grace and self-talk like “I’m doing the best I can” help reframe it. A solid support system — whether formal or informal — is essential for working parents. Children benefit from being included in adult conversations and exposed to diverse role models. A “good divorce” is possible through conscious, respectful co-parenting and emotional self-regulation. You can't control others' behaviour—but you can control your own responses, especially around your kids. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: "Our kids deserve a few hours of our undivided attention. I didn’t just set boundaries — I protected them." – Sarah Armstrong RESOURCES MENTIONED: The Art of the Juggling Act: A Bite-Sized Guide for Working Parents by Sarah Armstrong Visit: happyfamilies.com.au ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Define your non-negotiable boundaries (e.g., family time, tech-free windows). Communicate those boundaries clearly to work colleagues, clients, and family. Build a diverse support network — friends, neighbours, co-parents, and community members. Practice grace-based self-talk: Remind yourself, “I’m doing the best I can.” Include your kids in adult life — expose them to positive role models and conversations. In separation or divorce, prioritise your child’s emotional safety by regulating your own behaviour and language around them. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
