Avenue Red is proud to present a pair of masterful deep/dub techno mixes created by Alastair Kelly, who comes from the seaside town of Ryde on the north edge of the Isle of Wight, just a few miles off England's south-central coast. Alastair is the man behind the awesome Lempuyang label, which goes from strength to strength as it builds out its impressive roster of luminaries in the deep/dub techno sphere. Lempuyang has pressed and dispatched new weapons-grade materials from many of Avenue Red's most beloved artists, having clocked up 10 releases since the label's inception in late 2021. These artists include some of our previous guests and good friends: OHM, Octal Industries and Hydergine; Manchester's Vinyl Exchange record shop boss and artist J.S. Zeiter; Mosaic label boss Steve O'Sullivan AKA Bluetrain; Icelandic legend Yagya; Japanese artist Altone; Moscow artist Anton Kubikov; Canadian dub techno specialist Deadbeat and mysterious mad hatter Sa Pa, among others. It's truly staggering how far this label has come in 1 short year! These two mixes from Alastair help to colour in the picture of his inspirations and trace how these roots extend to the shoots of his flourishing new imprint, along the way showcasing some of the sublime material it has released so far. And now for part 2... "A pair of mixes from Lempuyang's chief consumer of hot drinks and bread-based snacks. Here for part 2 we have 100 minutes of unrelenting techno rhythms, a bit harder than Avenue Red's usual offering. I suggest this pairs nicely with 4 shots of espresso and a garlic bread. No nonsense on this one, but it's still deep as fuck." Hydergine, real name Roberto Corizzo, is an Italian DJ and producer who's name takes cues from a "smart drug used to improve the metabolism of brain cells and cognitive abilities". He takes interest in the cognitive functions of the brain and with his music aims to ensnare the listener into a comfortable state of meditative immersion. The choices of spectral content, tempo, groove and progression are therefore selected in line with this goal. As a result, Hydergine offers up soft, squishy and dubby atmospheres that reinvigorate our appreciation that Techno does not always need to be aggressive and confrontational. Other than his Hydergine project, Roberto is owner of the Ranges label and co-owner of the Subosc Label in part with another Bomphcastian, Kaelan.
The Avenue Red Podcast is once again happy to deliver a fresh dosage of deep'n'dubby Techno vibes, with Italian artist/DJ Alex Tasso stepping up to the plate. Remember that mega-deep 25th episode in our series from Hydergine? Well, it turns out that Alex is a friend of his and also from the town of Taranto in southern Italy. After receiving this mix out of the blue, we only realised this detail after initially hearing and noting the connection in style to the Hydergine mix. Prepare to enter some trippy sonic landscapes which, with a little imagination, can make you feel as if you are detached, lost and alone on some mysterious alien planet with a strong and rather delightful sense of isolation - no drugs required! "I am a passionate listener, collector and DJ from Taranto, southern Italy. Since 2007 my love for Dub and Detroit-influenced Techno sounds led me to experiment and express my passion as a self-taught producer. After several slots in the local scene I joined the Sound Department crew in 2014, spreading my idea of Dub/Techno music in one of the most active clubs in the south of Italy." We call in christmas with some powerful techno. This time with Kaelan from Italy. 1. What kind of artists inspire you? I'm pretty inspired by detroit and dub techno artists such as Basic Channel, Deepchord, Substance & Vainqueur, Echoplex, Derrick May, Claude Young and more.. 2. What kind of "sound" can we expect from Kaelan? The sound can be described as functional techno with hints of soul. 3. Whats up over there in Italy? Techno tips? I think there are some really interesting upcoming artists, proposing inspiring music... I can think for example at Roberto Bosco, Stenny, Emanuele Pertoldi or my partner in crime Hydergine... they are making outstanding stuff! 4. Whats up with you in the future? Releases, parties, etc Well, i have some ep that will be out in the next year. There is an upcoming vinyl release on my label Subosc, then, another one on Emmanuel's label "Arts". Next to this there will be a follow up ep on Ranges with my bro Roberto Hydergine, an album with "2030" moniker on Suburban Avenue and a lot of new stuff that must be released. About parties i'll play with Par Grindvik next 20/12 here in italy. Artwork: AK Rockefeller - Half Rome https://www.flickr.com/photos/akrockefeller/10401709234/
The 25th episode of the Avenue Red Podcast series comes from Hydergine (AKA Roberto Corizzo), a Dub Techno producer and esteemed vinyl collector/DJ from Taranto, Italy. His productions are very deep and textural, most notable for having a somewhat futuristic and scientific aesthetic, which is one of the foundational concepts of his work under the Hydergine moniker - as Roberto explains: "The pseudonym is inspired by a smart drug used to improve the metabolism of brain cells and cognitive abilities such as intelligence, learning and memory". His music has been released on a variety of well-respected labels including Separate Skills, Analog Response, Phlox, Ranges and Tiefenrausch. He is now on the cusp of his 7th vinyl release - pre-order available here: http://www.decks.de/t/hydergine-static_frames/c3w-g7 - which is forthcoming on the Dresden, Germany-based label Etui Records. This 80-minute session is yet another in a long list of incredible vinyl-exclusive mixes from Hydergine that give an insight into his amazing record collection, craftily put together to create a genuinely trippy listening experience. Hydergine has given us a real lesson in Dub Techno to get lost in here, as we celebrate a quarter-century of Avenue Red podcast mixes with something truly special.
