A year ago, RA.1000 marked the 1,000th release in the RA Mix series. Now, 52 weeks on, we've arrived at RA.1052—and first up is Kevin Richard Martin, AKA The Bug, finally making his long-awaited debut on the series. Ask anyone who's stood within earshot of a soundsystem he's operating: Martin doesn't so much make music as engineer entire weather systems. His music demands total immersion, from the earthquake-like bass weight of anthems like "Skeng" and "Poison Dart" to the post-apocalyptic pull of his slower steppers. As he told RBMA in 2018: "The more music becomes relegated to a cheap accessory, the less people will realise there's great magic in music as a form." For his RA Mix debut, Martin delivers "nocturnal dives into the city with memories of Blade Runner on repeat." A tribute to PRESSURE, his Berlin night, RA.1052 runs through Porter Ricks, Dillinja and Tikiman, charting dub's kaleidoscopic range — from Basic Channel's minimalism to K Wata's sleek bass science. The long-anonymous Peak Oil favourite breaks cover with two hours that run from post-punk and dub to vintage New York house. Mystery is a powerful force. What stays unknown stays enticing—negative space the listener fills in for themselves. Minimalists may be its largest constituency, and few have held the line as long as Topdown Dialectic. That changed with False LP A, which finally named him: Izaak Schlossman, a San Francisco photographer who spent years issuing untitled, identically timed tracks with no narrative attached. Coming out of the shadows hasn't cost the music its haze. Working in the Basic Channel lineage, Schlossman lays tracing paper over house and dub techno and pulls through the faintest outline—a bassline's shadow, the memory of a chord. Tracks surface the way bodies emerge in a steam room. He belongs to a North American underground that's been among dance music's most progressive forces this past decade—no surprise, then, that he credits Scott Zacharias of Detroit's No Way Back in the Q&A. This isn't quite the end of the mystery. Only the second Topdown Dialectic mix to surface, RA.1049 wipes the condensation from the glass just long enough for a look inside: it opens with a cut from German label Workshop before drifting from atmospheric post-punk and dubbed-out house into cosmic electro and, by the close, vintage New York house. It moves at an unhurried, chugging pace, but never mistakes restraint for stasis—each track quietly recalibrating until another contour comes into view. LISTEN AGAIN, to the art of sound… Stream on demand from fbi.radio, podcast here. doseone & Height Keech – Wont Work [doseone Bandcamp] doseone & Height Keech – Twisted (Featuring Brian Ennals) [doseone Bandcamp] Following his brilliant album All Portrait, No Chorus with Steel Tipped Dove earlier in 2025, veteran alt.hip-hop mouth doseone swung right back into the swing of things with an EP produced entirely by Baltimore beatmaker Height Keech. Wood Teeth was laser-focused on the current moment, and its sequel (Wood Teeth II, natch) takes the same position – once more it’s about the descent of the USA into fascism, and it’s as “scathing” as the copy says. Dose is putting out some of the best work of his career, and the madcap sound of Height Keech certainly doesn’t hinder him. Marcus Whale – Dark Room [Blue Void/Bandcamp] Out now, the latest album from Eora/Sydney luminary Marcus Whale, who’s been a fixture on this show since his early experimental work as Scissor Lock, when he was a mere teenager, and throughout the brilliant releases of his duo Collarbones and trio Black Vanilla (among many others). Nether is, by my count, his 5th solo album, the first being his incredible statement of intent 10 years ago, Inland Sea, and it follows 2024’s club-fuelled blissout Ecstasy with the comedown, albeit no less energetic. There’s those traces of trance’s lysergic dancefloor tranceformation, pummeling kicks and (as heard here) jungle-like drum programming, ultra-processed breaks and percussion, and of course Marcus’s voice multi-tracked and harmonised. Beautiful. Facta – SLoPE VIP (ft Warrior Queen & Killa P) [Wisdom Teeth/Bandcamp] UK bass producer & one half of the Wisdom Teeth label, Facta, put out a slab of UK post-dubstep bass styles, from funky house to breakbeat techno, on last year’s GULP. Now he’s re-tooled the breakbeat track “SLoPE” with vocals from two UK dancehall/grime legends, Warrior Queen & Killa P. Wicked! Naga Kirana – Lumba2 [Glitterbeat/Bandcamp] Amsterdam collective Naga Kirana make a super-fun form of Indonesian electronic folk-pop, with gamelan percussion instruments, drum machines & synths, and the voice Inda Duran ensuring it’s catchy as heck. Looking forward to more from them! Waakya – Fire Song [Hospital Hill courtesy of The Wire] First recorded listen to the new cross-cultural collaboration Waakya comes in the latest edition of Wire Magazine’s Wire Tapper. The band centres around Yolŋu songman Daniel Wilfred & yidaki (didgeridoo) virtuoso David Wilfred, who you may know from Hand to Earth. They’re joined by sound wizard & guitarist Matthew McGuigan of label/production house Hospital Hill, modular synth virtuoso Ben Carey (also of Sumn Conduit) and legendary experimental turntablist (and acclaimed cardiologist!) Martin Ng. That’s a recipe for something extraordinary, as you’ll hear from these first sounds. The way the Wilfreds’ traditional music melds with experimental textures is always magical, here emerging from varispeed record crackle, guitar harmonics and other unidentified sounds. Expect more soon. Kee Avil – delay [NNA Tapes/Bandcamp] So Montréal experimental musician Kee Avil, with a couple of albums under her belt on Constellation, has this year teamed up with NNA Tapes to release a progressive album over the whole year, called Vapor. There’s one track going up per month, and the latest is the saturated quasi-80s electro-pop of “delay”. Each track so far is excellent and weird. Marie Delprat – Dust in my veins [-OUS/Bandcamp] Swiss label -OUS has been consistently hitting goals for some years now, with glitched electronics, post-classical fusion weirdness and various unconventional takes on song-based music. All those things converge on the first single from classically-trained Marie Delprat‘s EP What remains after desire, a quietly creepy piece of drone-pop. Marina Herlop – Jaque [Marina Herlop Bandcamp] Keeping with post-classical fusion weirdness, we join Catalan composer, pianist, singer & producer Marina Herlop for her third album Dja Dja, her first to be self-released (distributed by Barcelona label Lapsus & !K7, so the gorgeous-looking vinyl & CDs should be readily available). First single “Jaque” has everything Herlop is known for: classical-sounding piano, layered ecstatic folk vocals, syncopated rhythms. Keep an eye out for this one! Vanishing Twin – Bring Me The Axe [Fire/Bandcamp] Currently a trio, Vanishing Twin have made experimental pop music now for 11 years. Singer Cathy Lucas moved to rural France a year or two ago, so making music with ubiquitous drummer Valentina Magaletti and bassist Susumu Mukai aka Zongamin (who together are V/Z) became primarily an asynchronous affair of swapping files remotely. The title Archives is a reference to file-sharing and collaging from disparate sources, rather than describing an album of rarities or best of – it’s all new material. The band has always taken indie pop into realms of the experimental, with strong krautrock & dub vibes, but these new tracks are particularly adventurous, sounding precisely like three musicians in different locations coming together for a chimera of folk, electronic pop, dub, glitched trip-hop and radiophonic post-classical abstraction. I’m pumped to hear the rest of this album. Heyes – carlos serone – “folder for heyes (unfinished tape beats)” [Heyes’ Edits] [Ric/H Collective/Bandcamp] Heyes – Ang Watching ‘Pets on a Train’ on a Plane [Ric/H Collective/Bandcamp] Lochie – aka Heyes – is quite close to this show, and has filled in for me earlier this year as well as having broadcast on other stations. As an artist, his output is quite varied, but one strand of his art is the transformation of pre-existing music as well as field recording. Lochie has formed the Ric/H Collective with a group of like-minded musicians, writers & designers here in Eora, and first cab off the rank for the label arm is (here goes): rich; or, a mixtape of music about being “rich” and music not about being “rich”. The mixtape begins (and goes on) with a selection of Heyes Quickmixes of some familiar money-based pop songs, some mangled beyond recognition, some leaking their source material in odd ways, but slipped inside are some fellow travellers like carlos serone, whose lo-fi beats are edited by Heyes, and who also provided the liner notes. Intriguingly strange. Harrison Rae – Diss Track [Harrison Rae Bandcamp] From a notable Eora/Sydney gent now, Harrison Rae, who’s released electronic music as Beau Ambien and Henri O and is the convenor of Club Moss. His 2025 Mixtape is varied as a mixtape ought to be, from guitar tracks to murky electronics like “Diss Track”. Djrum – I Wander (IV) [Houndstooth/Bandcamp] Felix Manuel aka Djrum is one of the geniuses of the current age, adept at beats at any BPM, switching easily between techno, dubstep, jungle & beyond, but also inserting beautiful quasi-classical piano & cello passages, flutes with weird tunings, etc. Forthcoming EP I Wander is really one 15:44 track, but split into 6 parts reflecting its restless evolution throughout. I’m fortunate to have heard the whole thing already, and it’s as good as you’re expecting! Rydeen & SOVBLKPSSY – LESBIANISM [silkXS Bandcamp] Eora/Sydney duo Rydeen & SOVBLKPSSY follow up a 2-tracker from 2024 with their DONT TELL ANYONE EP, reflecting their influences across the bass & club spectrum, nodding at local sounds & history, thence building up from scratch a hardcore continuum of our own. In that vein, “LESBIANISM” is a Ry & Sov take on jungle, and a delight to hear. Plug – King Ring [De:tuned/Bandcamp] Once again Luke Vibert returns to his DAT archives to pull a full album’s worth of mid-’90s Plug material out for us to bathe in. When Vibert discovered jungle circa 1994, he was probably the one member of the IDM crew (Aphex Twin, µ-Ziq, Squarepusher et al) who really understood how it worked, as club music, in relation to hip-hop and ragga dancehall, and in terms of break juggling. I love those other guys, but Plug was the real shit. At the time, Vibert only released a series of EPs and the classic Drum’n’Bass for Papa album (you can find them all digitally at Bleep and elsewhere), apart from a smattering of compilation tracks. As well as wicked drum programming, they exhibited Vibert’s talent for perfectly-sourced samples and melodic basslines & lead parts, all of which counts just as much for his hip-hop productions and the acid the makes up most of his material lately. Part of this is his sense of humour, and the “Papa” of the album’s title is Vibert’s grandfather Frank Vibert, a keen amateur magician, and while the photos of Vibert in Orientalist magician getup seem to have dried up, the title Variety Magic keeps up the connection. It should be noted that the Plug style of jungle/drill’n’bass was specific to the technology Vibert was using at the time, and even the Amen Andrews stuff that came out in 2003 has a different feel because he wasn’t producing the tracks the same way. So both the 2012 album Back on Time (which does sport his granddad on the cover) and this new album are collections of tracks from the mid-to-late ’90s. It’s insane that an 11 track album of tunes this good was lurking on DATs somewhere for decades. Morwell – Trust (A.Fruit Remix) [Morwell Bandcamp] Max Morwell has for the last 7+ years been exploring the music of bass & breakbeats that soundtracked many a rave, and he recently worked on some 160bpm tracks – incidentally the fairly standard BPM for jungle before it got more frenetic and morphed into drum’n’bass (a huge simplification). I heard Morwell’s originals a little while back and they’re excellent, but each track has been paired with an equally inspiring remixer. DJ Earl brings the Chicago connection – jungle vs footwork is a long-mined but no less fertile vein – while jungle/bass/IDM is represented by two women at the top of the board right now: Catherine Backhouse aka Xylitol, whose interest in pre-separation Yugoslavian electronica intersected with Morwell’s own Croatian heritage, and the ever-brilliant Spain-based Ukrainian producer A.Fruit. That makes Trust an epic release, and you’d be crazy to let it slip by. rush2theUnknown – Palenque (return to paradise) [Awkwardly Social/Bandcamp] A couple of excellent releases in 2024 introduced the New Zealand/Japan duo rush2theUnknown to the world, drawing on their background in NZ’s drum’n’bass & jungle scene, melded with the ancient future of vaporwave (well, to my ears anyway). Ancient / Future finds the duo in familiar territory, and it’s a joy. Pugilist – Rune [Samurai Music/Bandcamp] Hearing Naarm-based jungle/d’n’b head Pugilist on Samurai Music (again!) is a slight surprise until you realise that he’s as comfortable making clattering jungle as laser-focused drum’n’bass, bone-shuddering dubstep or who knows what else. So it feels like on Triads he’s nailed the latter-day tribal/minimalist d’n’b sound of Samurai, while still keeping the beat-juggling joys there. Much though I enjoy me some stripped-down Samurai hypno-beats, Pugilist’s got the skillz and intent to take it to another level. Topdown Dialectic – False LP A – 14 [False Aralia Bandcamp] With a longstanding connection with Brian Foote & Brion Brionson’s Peak Oil, the now slightly-less-mysterious US producer Topdown Dialectic returns after a 5 year gap with an album on False Aralia (also shepherded by Brian Foote), confirming it for those who didn’t know as the work of Izaak Schlossman, each of whose False Aralia releases blurred the definitions of artist vs album title vs… project? But it’s all of a piece with Topdown Dialect – that is, exploring various intersections of dub & bass with ambient, minimalism, glitch… the beats nod at micro-house, dub techno, but also percolated r’n’b. Where K Wata & others have recently found tracings of jungle in dub techno’s glitched edges, Schlossman’s works have lived in those liminal spaces, rummaging the low-tide wracks of the Basic Channel. The 16 tracks on the False LP, each cut to precisely 5 minutes, refuse to settle into any specific vein, moving from barely-there ambient dub to deeply rhythmic dub-funk that’s somehow entirely free of beats, desaturated exotica and deconstructed soul. It’s the washed-out future glimpsed behind the pulsating light of a near-death experience. The Bug & Dis Fig – Vanishing (Numbness Dub) [Pressure] Kevin Martin’s main project, The Bug, is back with a new singles series called Ladybug, in which one track is reworked in various ways – dubs, remixes, dubs of remixes etc. For “Vanishing”, Martin invites back his previous collaborator Dis Fig aka Felicia Chen, who has a new album of her own coming soon on Thrill Jockey which will knock the pants of you. This is a great, ethereal track, with a chugging bass and sparse rock beat under Chen’s trip-hoppy vocal. The original of the track is then treated to a “Vanished Dub”, with fragments of the vocal echoing through reverbed white noise, and then follows a “Numb Mix”, which is incredibly washed out, with the beat pared down to a kick and a wisp of a hi-hat – but the vocal remains intact. That version then gets a “Numb Dub”, which is beautifully dubbed out, like dub techno with a stomping martial kick. But the final “Numbness Dub” is the most tricked out with its dub delays – reminiscent of Martin’s minimalist trip-hoppy work with King Midas Sound crossed with the industrial dub of his Machines collection. Klara Lewis – Ta Min Hand [Editions Mego/Bandcamp] 5 years after the premature death of founder Peter Rehberg, the great Editions Mego label continues on, and Klara Lewis – who began her career with Mego in 2014 with the brilliant Ett, is releasing her next album Opening on the label in September. Lewis’s music can be an abstracted take on dance music forms, or abstracted mangling of acoustic sources, or rich, glitchy drone works. The first track, and first single, from Opening takes what sounds like loungey jazz and destroys it, pushing it into stuttered, clipped distortion, reversing it and so on. This is emblematic of Lewis’s approach to sound, somehow strongly emotive despite the abstraction. Violeta García & Hora Lunga – la ola or i miss u [-OUS/Bandcamp] The first album from the duo of Argentinian cellist Violeta García & Swiss musician Hora Lunga, I’ll wait for you in the car park, was a highlight of 2025. Due in September, its sequel 4ever is a continuation of the debut’s approach, in which the cello may sometimes take the foreground with melodic gestures or mini-orchestrations, but it can also be one distorted sound-source alongside heavy subs transplanted from the club, glitched samples, half-heard voices. On this first single, García’s cello plays a familiar heartstring-pulling role, but the track is slowly overtaken with distortion in a way not dissimilar to Klara Lewis’s techniques. Absolutely a highly anticipated album. Brady Cohan – Convincing [Brady Cohan Bandcamp] LA composer & guitarist Brady Cohan‘s music is mostly heard on TV & in film, but Everything That Matters is music from the heart, arising from the revelation that the things that really mattered were there with him & his family. Still, this music is cinematic in scope, taking his guitar through spectral drones and surging bass, and back home again. Marla Hlady & Christof Migone – It Takes Two [Crónica/Bandcamp] On And On And Off is the second collaboration between Canadian sound-artists Marla Hlady & Christof Migone released on the great Portuguese label Crónica. These two both combine the fine arts, conceptual arts, with sound-art: their previous duo album Swan Song takes its name from the swan necks of decommissioned beer stills, which formed part of a kinetic sculpture and also generated many of the sounds in their work. Along with the swan necks were the voices of the brewery staff, amplified through the sculpture. On And On And Off also collaborates with a choir of sorts – 12 people who were given 12 prompts, which asked them to record parts of their daily commute, and also describe them in particular ways (see the list of prompts here). Once again these recordings formed the starting matter for the album’s works. Listening to the murky sounds of “It Takes Two”, timestretched loops move in & out of phase, unidentifiable but suggestive of motion. There are short noise pieces, cut-up vocal syllables and an almost shoegazey rumbling ambient piece to finish. NEA Ensemble – CAMEDRIO [NEA Editions] Inside a farmhouse in the Murgia Materana national park, 5 hours’ drive south-east of Rome, a group of experimental musicians have formed the NEA Cultural Association, a collective aimed at promoting the creation of multidisciplinary cultural works in the intersection of electro-acoustic, experimental music, visual arts and popular traditions – outside of the urban centres they’re usually found in. ORIZZONTALE is the first release from their NEA Editions label, documenting an improvised performance from 12 musicians & artists, combining acoustic & electric instruments, live synths and electronics. Among the members is Andrea Taeggi, whose solo work I’ve featured under his own name and earlier as Gondwana on the great Opal Tapes, who also released his amazing duo Lumisokea. Unsurprisingly the music here leans more on live expression than intricate post-production, but the restraint of the musicians and the live processing make these pieces quite striking. Borguefül – La jeune fille bleue [Carton Records/Pagans/Bandcamp] French double bassist Mélanie Loisel released her debut album as Borguefül, Horst, in 2022 on Carton Records. Her follow-up, Vêtue, is again based around her double bass, enhanced with physical preparations, looping and processing, and forming a percussive base for her vocals. The first single begins with bowed notes and harmonics accompanying Loisel’s voice, but by 2 minutes in you notice a low rumbling, a bass drone with digital detritus, which takes over and then stays under the short, otherwise a capella vocal phrases. It’s beautifully unexpected. Listen again — ~218MB

fka boursin is the sort of musician we like. Understated, doesn't take himself too seriously yet manages to channel real emotion and depth through music. The sounds speak from themselves with Henry drawing upon influences from the likes of Dj Sprinkles, Basic Channel, old NY House music and after hours sounds. The end result is a puzzle made up of pieces from each – all with evocative undertones throughout. The latest release is out on Scissor & Thread – a suitable home for an eclectic, long playing selection of pensive tracks which leave food for thought. This is music for late night moments alone, for foggy mornings and reflective moments.

The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception. Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero." From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before. As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres. Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela" to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual." Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. Ghent-based DJ and Fuse resident Marie-Julie is our guest this week with the killer delivery. Merging future-facing, hi-tech abstraction with a sixth sense for those inescapable rhythms and a wonky, off-kilter sonic engineering, Marie-Julie entices us down the path of complete mind-alteration. Constantly shifting gears, her vinyl blends run the gamut from dystopian murk to ankle-snapping old skool breaks, through lysergic psychedelia and chromatic dubs a la Basic Channel, without ever losing in cohesion or attention to detail. Do not resist, but just let this mad whorl of sound grab you and fling you into an entirely uncharted, demented zone of its own. 

A clinic in minimal from the elusive Acting Press boss. Why do certain sounds cultivate a cult following? Simply put, it's often because they resist easy consumption. PLO Man and his imprint Acting Press lean into this. Searching for the Berlin-based DJ and producer, you won't find much online presence, interviews or conventional PR. What you will find, if you look hard enough, is a catalogue of records and mixes with a kind of tape hiss charm (a spiritual successor to Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, but scuzzier and lighter on its feet). Founded in 2015, Acting Press once seemed to belong to the short-lived "outsider house" trend, but is now synonymous with a certain strain of modern minimal, one that is analogue, spacious and pointedly opaque. PLO Man's output is equally sparse by design: this week, he joins the RA Podcast with a characteristically elusive style, accompanying the near two-hour mix is a one-answer Q&A that gives almost nothing away. Stripped-back, ever-so-slightly sleazy and coated in dust, PLO Man's RA Podcast continues that lineage in style. Opening with the featherlight microhouse of Margaret Dygas, RA.988 unfolds into a carefully curated spectrum of minimal, dub and deep techno. Among familiar names—look out for the blinding Rhythm & Sound and Moodymann blend—are deep cuts and left turns alongside the odd outlier, like lovers' rock pioneer Gregory Isaacs. Over two decades of unfaltering devotion to production and DJing, dishing out some of the finest slices of opulently textured techno along the way, Tokyo-based maestro DJ Sodeyama has been honing a sound signature both intricately hypnotic and boundary-pushing. Blending delicate melodic strains of electronics ranging from deep, ambient music to verbed-out, atmospheric techno, often laced with hints of jazz and soulful discoid expressions, his productions and mixes combine the satiny elegance of loungey daydream with that of more rugged, deep-diving dubs a la Basic Channel. From light to shade, and vice-versa, DJ Sodeyama builds pieces of music where the ever-changing lighting and shifting angles swath you in an oddly comforting headspace. A most fascinating trip for the body and soul. 

The beloved German producer talks about finding inner peace, overstimulation and his new album on Pampa Records. Mental health is a topic that comes up frequently in the music industry, but it's still not discussed enough among electronic music's top performers. In this RA Exchange, Stefan Kozalla—better known as DJ Koze—opens up about his battle with anxiety, self-doubt and rising expectations that come with being a long-standing, high-profile name. He talks about overstimulation, music as rest and the compromises artists need to make to have relevance and staying power. Kozalla, a beloved and eccentric German artist who has developed a cult following over the course of his career, has productions on esteemed labels like XL, Kompakt, Cocoon, Warp, Ninja Tune and BPitch, which garner praise as soon as they're released. Mental health is a topic that comes up frequently in the music industry, but it's still not discussed enough among electronic music's top performers. In this RA Exchange, Stefan Kozalla—better known as DJ Koze—opens up about his battle with anxiety, self-doubt and rising expectations that come with being a long-standing, high-profile name. He talks about overstimulation, music as rest and the compromises artists need to make to have relevance and staying power. Kozalla, a beloved and eccentric German artist who has developed a cult following over the course of his career, has productions on esteemed labels like XL, Kompakt, Cocoon, Warp, Ninja Tune and BPitch, which garner praise as soon as they're released. Caterina Barbieri, Kali Malone, Moritz Von Oswald and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe discuss the role limitations play in the creative process, and whether they can be a source for creativity, if working with limitations helps sharpen one's aesthetics and define one's unique artistic voice, and whether human imagination needs limits to become limitless.Caterina Barbieri is a composer and modular synth artist whose sound draws from electronic, experimental and dance music. Her work is informed by an education in classical guitar and electro-acoustic composition at the Conservatory of Bologna, as well as the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and its famed centre for sound art, Elektronmusikstudion. She has spent a decade since her debut release, Vertical, breaking the rigid structures of electronic music and exploring how sound can induce both metaphysical and psycho-physical responses. Her most recent project, Myuthafoo, further investigates her interest in time, space, memory and emotion, and the links between them.Kali Malone is a composer and organist based in Stockholm. Her compositions are rich with harmonic texture through synthetic and acoustic instrumentation. In 2016 she co-founded the record label and concert series XKatedral, together with Maria W Horn, in Stockholm. Over the last few years she has released the critically acclaimed albums The Sacrificial Code, Living Torch, and Does Spring Hide Its Joy featuring Stephen O'Malley & Lucy Railton.Moritz Von Oswald is a dub techno pioneer producer and percussionist hailing from Berlin. He is the co-founder of production duo and record label Basic Channel. Prior to becoming one of the leading figures in electronic music in the 1990s, he played in one of the last incarnations of Palais Schaumburg. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has worked with many legendary artists including Juan Atkins, Thomas Fehlmann, Carl Craig and Tony Allen. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is a Brooklyn-based artist, curator, composer and multi-instrumentalist. In 1997, he joined the band 90 Day Men before releasing solo projects under the moniker Lichens from 2004. He has collaborated on projects or provided sound in a featured artist capacity for such films as End of Summer, Sicario, Arrival, Last and First Men with Johann Johannsson and It Comes at Night with Brian McOmber. More recently, Robert has scored Il colpo del cane for Fulvio Risuleo, Candyman for Nia DaCosta, The Color of Care for Yance Ford and Master for Mariama Diallo.

"Art and music are the same, they're just different dialects." The Chicago house music legend talks about co-curating the photo exhibit Walk The Night and nightlife's '90s heyday. Ron Trent grew up in Chicago, where he dreamed of being a musician from a young age. He would end up becoming one of the architects of the Chicago house sound and working alongside contemporaries like Chez Damier, and across the pond, Basic Channel. His label, Prescription Records, became a renowned purveyor of the deep house sound. He spread his vision from the American Midwest to New York, Europe and beyond. In this talk recorded live at Miami Art Week, Trent talks to Resident Advisor music critic Kiana Mickles about the songs and dance floors that shaped him in this early part of his musical trajectory. In addition to playing some of his favourite jazz, funk and disco songs, he reflects on clubs like Studio 54, Paradise Garage and The Warehouse, which he claims matured him as an artist and irrevocably shaped the trajectory of club culture. Trent was instrumental in co-curating an exhibit called Walk The Night (which premiered at this multidisciplinary event), a photographic homage to these spaces and other historic clubs around the world. "Always notice whatever is happening in the background." The acclaimed producer and composer discusses the art of meaningful listening and his latest LP, Silencio. Moritz von Oswald's legacy as one of the trailblazers of contemporary techno precedes him. The artist's initial claim to fame was his involvement in the duo Basic Channel with Mark Ernestus, a project that formed the dub techno canon in the '90s and is still a primary reference point for many, if not most, modern producers. He was also at the helm of the famous cutting and pressing plant Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin, which has become a home for countless artists over the years. But on this occasion, Oswald sat down to discuss a more recent project: his LP Silencio on Tresor Records, which came out in November. He talked with RA's senior producer, Chloe Lula, about his lifelong love of jazz, tapestry, French film, Southern Italian opera and music from Central Asia. He also reflects on his production process—an endless exploration of drama and dynamics. Oswald is fascinated with reducing sound to its most basic elements and broadening the capacity of what the ear can perceive. Most importantly, he's a critical listener, and in the final moments of the episode, he imparts wisdom on how he's learned to keep a conscious ear open to the world around him. Lloyd ‘Bullwackie' Barnes and his legendary Wackie's institution has been at the heart of the dub and reggae scene since the 1970s. Starting out as a tailor to reggae's brightest stars, Bullwackie quickly started working as an engineer at Treasure Isle and Studio One studios in Kingston, Jamaica. On moving to New York with his family he became immersed in the burgeoning reggae and dub scene briefly running his own soundsystem. Bullwackie opened up the first reggae studio in New York, Wackie's House of Music. Since Wackie's was founded in 1976, Bullwackie has produced and released records with the likes of Sugar Minnott, Lee Scratch Perry, The Love Joys, Horace Andy, Max Romeo, Dennis Brown, and - as Zakia discovers - even impromptu sessions with the likes of Mohammed Ali. In 2020, Ádhamh founded the independent record label, Faoi Thalamh Records, the vision of which was to establish a community of underground artists that work primarily in electronic music. The main focus of Faoi Thalamh has always been to provide a platform for musicians to share their creativity, regardless of how obscure or experimental it may be. This ethos appears to be an accurate reflection of Faoi Thalamh's back-catalogue to date, as previous releases range from raw, driving techno to experimental field-recorded ambience and everything in-between. Ádhamh's latest release on Faoi Thalamh, ''Nebula'', is a love-letter to old-school sci-fi inspired techno. Taking inspiration from titans such as Jeff Mills and Basic Channel, Ádhamh wanted to capture that signature sound of the Detroit-Berlin fusion that began to emerge in the 90's. Dusty, cosmic synths and rattling bass-lines combine to take us on a 138 bpm journey through the fabric of time and space." Next up on the Avenue Red Podcast is a DJ and producer from St. Petersburg, Russia known as Kruglenko. We have seen this guy around on SoundCloud thanks to the various recommendation algorithms, noticing his quality mixes and also his ear for productions are clearly getting to a high level... then he submitted a mix to us. Just shows the algorithms are functioning well over here! What we received is a solid dancefloor-focused, heads-down and elbows-up DJ mix of driving, deep dubby techno and house. Producer: Elias. (DE) Release: PLTM009 Label: Platform 22 There's something infectious about pacey, grooving dub techno. Beats of this flavour soothe the soul without sacrificing crowd energy. They act as a breath of crisp ocean air - a palate cleanser in a well-balanced DJ set. Enter Elias (DE). The Berlin-based artist seamlessly mixes 90's influences into a cohesive and contemporary whole. The result is energetic dub techno with a harder edge. To my ears, it's as if Basic Channel and Truncate had a sonic lovechild, hellbent on making you dance. Elias' latest tracks are being released on Platform 22. The UK label's 9th offering features two tracks from the Berliner himself, along with Kaan Pirecioglu, also from the German capital. The beat in question here is Involved. Low-end groove and rhythm is key to Elias' track, tapping into the body's inherent tendency to dance without hesitation. Groove is to techno as water is to humans - essential and required in perpetuity. The track starts with a thick yet clean kick - full of body, but tastefully mixed. It adds emphasis to other core elements. Dubby chord stabs, the track's fundamental backbone, echo through the sound space. They provide sprightly progressive energy as the tension builds. The first breathing point comes in around 1:53 mins. The track clears unearthing a vocal choir sound that lifts you upon the crest of a euphoric wave. From here, Involved continues to mount tension. Crispy claps and ride cymbals build energy further until 4:15, where you're released into stripped-back elation. One of the strongest sounds offered by Involved is the subtle breathing sound, first heard as the track begins. It ebbs and flows around your ears as the track progresses, adding a lovely aural texture and ethereal finish to the mix. The split EP, titled Step-Signals, is set for release on 17th July 2020. Hailing from Okinawa, now-Tokyo-based producer IORI once cut his teeth as an assistant for David Mancuso’s revered party, The Loft, in New York City, where he learnt a meticulous sonic mentality from his audiophile mentor. This permeates his carefully-handled arrangements, which have helped make his name and define a series of spacey, atmospheric originals and remixes for proponent imprints like Phonica and Prologue to name a few. Since his striking 2009 debut, Galaxy, which took its cue from Basic Channel and Manuel Gottsching, the Japanese producer has developed an immensely expressive dubbed-out sound in his own right. The first culmination of that is 2012’s excellent Nexus album for Bitta, a label owned by Far Eastern rising star DJ Nobu, seeing his ambient productions sit nicely with his hypnotic dance tunes. Two year stay in Berlin in early 2010s helped IORI gain a foothold in the international stage. He has since traveled across Europe, validating his characteristic meditative techno set, which is just the tip of his huge musical iceberg that ranges from low-slung house to leftfield oddballs. Despite his return to Japan in 2015, his presence remains strongly felt through frequent European tours. 2016 saw IORI release the Cold Radiance album, where his sci-fi ambient side grew fully- fledged. For an artist that has produced immersive and spacious pieces, it was a logical continuation of his extensive career as a producer. Eschewing the club-orientated perspective, it certainly proved IORI’s expressional depth and does justice to his artistic intention, his acute ears for spellbinding details standing out in sharp relief, which raised expectations of his promising future.
