Ghent-based DJ and Fuse resident Marie-Julie is our guest this week with the killer delivery. Merging future-facing, hi-tech abstraction with a sixth sense for those inescapable rhythms and a wonky, off-kilter sonic engineering, Marie-Julie entices us down the path of complete mind-alteration. Constantly shifting gears, her vinyl blends run the gamut from dystopian murk to ankle-snapping old skool breaks, through lysergic psychedelia and chromatic dubs a la Basic Channel, without ever losing in cohesion or attention to detail. Do not resist, but just let this mad whorl of sound grab you and fling you into an entirely uncharted, demented zone of its own.
A clinic in minimal from the elusive Acting Press boss. Why do certain sounds cultivate a cult following? Simply put, it's often because they resist easy consumption. PLO Man and his imprint Acting Press lean into this. Searching for the Berlin-based DJ and producer, you won't find much online presence, interviews or conventional PR. What you will find, if you look hard enough, is a catalogue of records and mixes with a kind of tape hiss charm (a spiritual successor to Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, but scuzzier and lighter on its feet). Founded in 2015, Acting Press once seemed to belong to the short-lived "outsider house" trend, but is now synonymous with a certain strain of modern minimal, one that is analogue, spacious and pointedly opaque. PLO Man's output is equally sparse by design: this week, he joins the RA Podcast with a characteristically elusive style, accompanying the near two-hour mix is a one-answer Q&A that gives almost nothing away. Stripped-back, ever-so-slightly sleazy and coated in dust, PLO Man's RA Podcast continues that lineage in style. Opening with the featherlight microhouse of Margaret Dygas, RA.988 unfolds into a carefully curated spectrum of minimal, dub and deep techno. Among familiar names—look out for the blinding Rhythm & Sound and Moodymann blend—are deep cuts and left turns alongside the odd outlier, like lovers' rock pioneer Gregory Isaacs. Like the best of his forebears, PLO Man wants RA.988 to take time for you to settle in. But once you do, you won't want to leave. @p_el_oh Find the tracklist and interview at ra.co/podcast/988
Over two decades of unfaltering devotion to production and DJing, dishing out some of the finest slices of opulently textured techno along the way, Tokyo-based maestro DJ Sodeyama has been honing a sound signature both intricately hypnotic and boundary-pushing. Blending delicate melodic strains of electronics ranging from deep, ambient music to verbed-out, atmospheric techno, often laced with hints of jazz and soulful discoid expressions, his productions and mixes combine the satiny elegance of loungey daydream with that of more rugged, deep-diving dubs a la Basic Channel. From light to shade, and vice-versa, DJ Sodeyama builds pieces of music where the ever-changing lighting and shifting angles swath you in an oddly comforting headspace. A most fascinating trip for the body and soul.
The beloved German producer talks about finding inner peace, overstimulation and his new album on Pampa Records. Mental health is a topic that comes up frequently in the music industry, but it's still not discussed enough among electronic music's top performers. In this RA Exchange, Stefan Kozalla—better known as DJ Koze—opens up about his battle with anxiety, self-doubt and rising expectations that come with being a long-standing, high-profile name. He talks about overstimulation, music as rest and the compromises artists need to make to have relevance and staying power. Kozalla, a beloved and eccentric German artist who has developed a cult following over the course of his career, has productions on esteemed labels like XL, Kompakt, Cocoon, Warp, Ninja Tune and BPitch, which garner praise as soon as they're released. "Every time DJ Koze comes out of the woodwork to drop a 12-inch—or even just a remix—we usually end up hearing it everywhere for months on end," wrote former RA editor Andrew Ryce. Kozalla talks to RA contributor (and former editor) Matt Unicomb about his production process and early influences—an uncanny combination of Basic Channel and Public Enemy—as well as his forthcoming album, Music Can Hear Us, coming out on Pampa Records on April 4th. Expert pusher of intrusively mental wares and kaleidoscopic audio scenarios, Refracted has been laying the foundation to a truly solid body of work, punctuated with releases for Bitta, Polegroup and his own imprint, Mind Express. From serene, stripped-down ambiences to churning material from the deep, his blends conjure up the best of textural immersion and rhythmic out-thereness, constantly expanding the scope with every bar. Enter a world of sunken minimalism, that won't fail to evoke Basic Channel and Moritz von Oswald's seminal dub techno idioms, but complete with its own hypnotic appeal and highly addictive grammar.
Caterina Barbieri, Kali Malone, Moritz Von Oswald and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe discuss the role limitations play in the creative process, and whether they can be a source for creativity, if working with limitations helps sharpen one's aesthetics and define one's unique artistic voice, and whether human imagination needs limits to become limitless.Caterina Barbieri is a composer and modular synth artist whose sound draws from electronic, experimental and dance music. Her work is informed by an education in classical guitar and electro-acoustic composition at the Conservatory of Bologna, as well as the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and its famed centre for sound art, Elektronmusikstudion. She has spent a decade since her debut release, Vertical, breaking the rigid structures of electronic music and exploring how sound can induce both metaphysical and psycho-physical responses. Her most recent project, Myuthafoo, further investigates her interest in time, space, memory and emotion, and the links between them.Kali Malone is a composer and organist based in Stockholm. Her compositions are rich with harmonic texture through synthetic and acoustic instrumentation. In 2016 she co-founded the record label and concert series XKatedral, together with Maria W Horn, in Stockholm. Over the last few years she has released the critically acclaimed albums The Sacrificial Code, Living Torch, and Does Spring Hide Its Joy featuring Stephen O'Malley & Lucy Railton.Moritz Von Oswald is a dub techno pioneer producer and percussionist hailing from Berlin. He is the co-founder of production duo and record label Basic Channel. Prior to becoming one of the leading figures in electronic music in the 1990s, he played in one of the last incarnations of Palais Schaumburg. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has worked with many legendary artists including Juan Atkins, Thomas Fehlmann, Carl Craig and Tony Allen. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is a Brooklyn-based artist, curator, composer and multi-instrumentalist. In 1997, he joined the band 90 Day Men before releasing solo projects under the moniker Lichens from 2004. He has collaborated on projects or provided sound in a featured artist capacity for such films as End of Summer, Sicario, Arrival, Last and First Men with Johann Johannsson and It Comes at Night with Brian McOmber. More recently, Robert has scored Il colpo del cane for Fulvio Risuleo, Candyman for Nia DaCosta, The Color of Care for Yance Ford and Master for Mariama Diallo.
"Art and music are the same, they're just different dialects." The Chicago house music legend talks about co-curating the photo exhibit Walk The Night and nightlife's '90s heyday. Ron Trent grew up in Chicago, where he dreamed of being a musician from a young age. He would end up becoming one of the architects of the Chicago house sound and working alongside contemporaries like Chez Damier, and across the pond, Basic Channel. His label, Prescription Records, became a renowned purveyor of the deep house sound. He spread his vision from the American Midwest to New York, Europe and beyond. In this talk recorded live at Miami Art Week, Trent talks to Resident Advisor music critic Kiana Mickles about the songs and dance floors that shaped him in this early part of his musical trajectory. In addition to playing some of his favourite jazz, funk and disco songs, he reflects on clubs like Studio 54, Paradise Garage and The Warehouse, which he claims matured him as an artist and irrevocably shaped the trajectory of club culture. Trent was instrumental in co-curating an exhibit called Walk The Night (which premiered at this multidisciplinary event), a photographic homage to these spaces and other historic clubs around the world. To hear more about the legacy of Trent's favourite clubs and the music that shaped him, listen to the episode in full.
"Always notice whatever is happening in the background." The acclaimed producer and composer discusses the art of meaningful listening and his latest LP, Silencio. Moritz von Oswald's legacy as one of the trailblazers of contemporary techno precedes him. The artist's initial claim to fame was his involvement in the duo Basic Channel with Mark Ernestus, a project that formed the dub techno canon in the '90s and is still a primary reference point for many, if not most, modern producers. He was also at the helm of the famous cutting and pressing plant Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin, which has become a home for countless artists over the years. But on this occasion, Oswald sat down to discuss a more recent project: his LP Silencio on Tresor Records, which came out in November. He talked with RA's senior producer, Chloe Lula, about his lifelong love of jazz, tapestry, French film, Southern Italian opera and music from Central Asia. He also reflects on his production process—an endless exploration of drama and dynamics. Oswald is fascinated with reducing sound to its most basic elements and broadening the capacity of what the ear can perceive. Most importantly, he's a critical listener, and in the final moments of the episode, he imparts wisdom on how he's learned to keep a conscious ear open to the world around him. Check out the episode in full.
All the way from down under, here comes Albert Chiovenda, a talented producer whose deep and mesmeric productions have graced the grooves of Granulart Rec., Hayes Collective and Evod Music. Revolving around loopy motif'd soundscapes and ever immersive rhythmic propulsion, Chiovenda's sound has us moving in between proper transporting dubbed-out layers a la Basic Channel and oneiric harmonics rolling and tumbling in cascade. A lush imaginarium bristling with impressive audio minutiae and balmy ambient weathering, this is techno to offset your sensory balance. A welcome swash of velveteen serenity to kick off the week.
Lloyd ‘Bullwackie' Barnes and his legendary Wackie's institution has been at the heart of the dub and reggae scene since the 1970s. Starting out as a tailor to reggae's brightest stars, Bullwackie quickly started working as an engineer at Treasure Isle and Studio One studios in Kingston, Jamaica. On moving to New York with his family he became immersed in the burgeoning reggae and dub scene briefly running his own soundsystem. Bullwackie opened up the first reggae studio in New York, Wackie's House of Music. Since Wackie's was founded in 1976, Bullwackie has produced and released records with the likes of Sugar Minnott, Lee Scratch Perry, The Love Joys, Horace Andy, Max Romeo, Dennis Brown, and - as Zakia discovers - even impromptu sessions with the likes of Mohammed Ali. After enjoying a resurgence of interest in more recent times, following a reissue series via Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald's Basic Channel dub techno label, Wackie's today enjoys multi-generational cult status. In this podcast Zakia and Bullwackie reflect on his life and career, and the exciting discovery of his stolen archive of unreleased Wackie's recordings that Lloyd has recently recovered, and is now in the process of mastering, in some cases nearly 50 years after they were first recorded. Check out the NTS Guide To Wackie'sPresenter - Zakia Sewell, Producer - Lizzy King, Sound Recording - Josh Farmer & Zara Wladawsky, Editing - Femi Oriogun-Williams, Mastering - Felix Stock, Composer - Jennifer Walton, Talent & Outreach - Samuel Strang. We kick off the weeks music by stopping off in West Clare, welcoming a techno premiere from a DJ, producer and Faoi Thalamh Records head, Ádhamh. In 2020, Ádhamh founded the independent record label, Faoi Thalamh Records, the vision of which was to establish a community of underground artists that work primarily in electronic music. The main focus of Faoi Thalamh has always been to provide a platform for musicians to share their creativity, regardless of how obscure or experimental it may be. This ethos appears to be an accurate reflection of Faoi Thalamh's back-catalogue to date, as previous releases range from raw, driving techno to experimental field-recorded ambience and everything in-between. Ádhamh's latest release on Faoi Thalamh, ''Nebula'', is a love-letter to old-school sci-fi inspired techno. Taking inspiration from titans such as Jeff Mills and Basic Channel, Ádhamh wanted to capture that signature sound of the Detroit-Berlin fusion that began to emerge in the 90's. Dusty, cosmic synths and rattling bass-lines combine to take us on a 138 bpm journey through the fabric of time and space." Pay as you go cartel以及Big Apple Records周边,和dubstep基本是平⾏发展的; Dizzee Rascal 的专辑”Boy In Da Corner”(2003) 是我们的最爱! 法国的雷鬼乐应用其实非常多,从80s末开始的法国说唱就有很多牙买加元素,欧洲的跳舞音乐好多也是雷鬼的节拍; 德国dub techno的开创者Basic Channel是资深雷⻤乐爱好者,他们化名的团体Rhythm&Sound有着最顶级的⾳响,俩⼈还有个公司专⻔再版⽼雷鬼,把Wackies公司介绍给了更多听众; Playlist: Massive Attack - “Blue Lines” T99 - “Anasthasia” Rebel MC - “Street Tuff” Soul II Soul - “Back To Life” Björk - “Crying” Fun ‘Da' Menta - “English Breakfast” Dizzee Rascal - “Fix Up, Look Sharp” Big Red - “Red-Emption” Rhythm & Sound with Jennifer Lara - “Queen In My Empire” CJ Lewis - “R To The A” 老林特意为节目挑选的 Spotify 歌单:

Next up on the Avenue Red Podcast is a DJ and producer from St. Petersburg, Russia known as Kruglenko. We have seen this guy around on SoundCloud thanks to the various recommendation algorithms, noticing his quality mixes and also his ear for productions are clearly getting to a high level... then he submitted a mix to us. Just shows the algorithms are functioning well over here! What we received is a solid dancefloor-focused, heads-down and elbows-up DJ mix of driving, deep dubby techno and house. Music that is constructed in many implementations from the blueprints of the Basic Channel & Maurizio works. These are the sprawling stylistic tributaries of music that have flowed down-river since those halcyon days and humble beginnings. We hear a lot said these days about the idiosyncratic underground house/techno scenes in France, Germany, Romania ("Rominimal") etc... something equally intriguing and vibrant continues to thrive across the vast swathes of European Russia too and we are proud to champion the players that are busy pushing their visions of underground music and culture over there too! This mix from Kruglenko will hypnotise you to your core, twist you mind and shatter your bones on a good soundsystem. Press play. It's time to breathe in the cold, dark air, close your eyes and let the strobe lights flash through your eyelids. "Hi, Kruglenko from Saint Petersburg, Russia here. I have been a DJ and musician since 2008. I prefer the raw sound of house and techno with notes of dub and minimal. In November 2019 I debuted with a release on MixCult Records, a very good underground deeb/dub techno label from my hometown. I hope you will like this selection!" Hi Everyone, ESOA Podcast 21 this week. With the another Tresor Resident, his Name Marcel Heese. He comes with an absolutely grateful real Electro Set, it's Fantastic. LVR Special Shows: Chain Reaction Chain Reaction was a German record label founded in 1995 by Basic Channel members. The label's sound focused on a similar minimal and dub techno
Producer: Elias. (DE) Release: PLTM009 Label: Platform 22 There's something infectious about pacey, grooving dub techno. Beats of this flavour soothe the soul without sacrificing crowd energy. They act as a breath of crisp ocean air - a palate cleanser in a well-balanced DJ set. Enter Elias (DE). The Berlin-based artist seamlessly mixes 90's influences into a cohesive and contemporary whole. The result is energetic dub techno with a harder edge. To my ears, it's as if Basic Channel and Truncate had a sonic lovechild, hellbent on making you dance. Elias' latest tracks are being released on Platform 22. The UK label's 9th offering features two tracks from the Berliner himself, along with Kaan Pirecioglu, also from the German capital. The beat in question here is Involved. Low-end groove and rhythm is key to Elias' track, tapping into the body's inherent tendency to dance without hesitation. Groove is to techno as water is to humans - essential and required in perpetuity. The track starts with a thick yet clean kick - full of body, but tastefully mixed. It adds emphasis to other core elements. Dubby chord stabs, the track's fundamental backbone, echo through the sound space. They provide sprightly progressive energy as the tension builds. The first breathing point comes in around 1:53 mins. The track clears unearthing a vocal choir sound that lifts you upon the crest of a euphoric wave. From here, Involved continues to mount tension. Crispy claps and ride cymbals build energy further until 4:15, where you're released into stripped-back elation. One of the strongest sounds offered by Involved is the subtle breathing sound, first heard as the track begins. It ebbs and flows around your ears as the track progresses, adding a lovely aural texture and ethereal finish to the mix. The split EP, titled Step-Signals, is set for release on 17th July 2020. You'll be able to grab a copy at Platform 22's Bandcamp page. bomphcast.com
Hailing from Okinawa, now-Tokyo-based producer IORI once cut his teeth as an assistant for David Mancuso’s revered party, The Loft, in New York City, where he learnt a meticulous sonic mentality from his audiophile mentor. This permeates his carefully-handled arrangements, which have helped make his name and define a series of spacey, atmospheric originals and remixes for proponent imprints like Phonica and Prologue to name a few. Since his striking 2009 debut, Galaxy, which took its cue from Basic Channel and Manuel Gottsching, the Japanese producer has developed an immensely expressive dubbed-out sound in his own right. The first culmination of that is 2012’s excellent Nexus album for Bitta, a label owned by Far Eastern rising star DJ Nobu, seeing his ambient productions sit nicely with his hypnotic dance tunes. Two year stay in Berlin in early 2010s helped IORI gain a foothold in the international stage. He has since traveled across Europe, validating his characteristic meditative techno set, which is just the tip of his huge musical iceberg that ranges from low-slung house to leftfield oddballs. Despite his return to Japan in 2015, his presence remains strongly felt through frequent European tours. 2016 saw IORI release the Cold Radiance album, where his sci-fi ambient side grew fully- fledged. For an artist that has produced immersive and spacious pieces, it was a logical continuation of his extensive career as a producer. Eschewing the club-orientated perspective, it certainly proved IORI’s expressional depth and does justice to his artistic intention, his acute ears for spellbinding details standing out in sharp relief, which raised expectations of his promising future. We're really excited to welcome Modern House Quintet to the podcast. The Parisian duo have been putting out some superb freewheeling analog jams in recent times, focusing on slow-burning grooves and melodic improvisation (see also some lush sounds under their Cyclades moniker). Their wonderful mix for us is almost entirely comprised of unreleased material, all made by their own fair hands as is the Monologues Podcast way. *How would you describe your sound?* It’s always a tricky question. I would say that I try to do different things every time. A concrete example : the new release (CYC 003) contains five tracks which are quite unalike : one is a piano and guitar "housy" piece. The other is more dub-techno oriented. The third one has a more delicate house feeling, whereas the next one has a breakbeat-jungle vibe. The final one is kind of a vibraphonic interlude. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* Lots of immense jazz musicians : Milt Jackson, Red Garland, Kenny Drew, Tommy Flanagan, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Peterson, Clifford Brown, Kenny Clarke. Within the electronic scene : Lars Bartkhun, Basic Channel, Mike Grant, Omar S, Anthony Nicholson, Ron Trent, Volcov. Outside the electronic scene : Steve Reich and Philip Glass. On a different perspective, there is also the work of the dubplates & mastering engineers: Helmut Erler, Christoph Grote-Beverborg or Rashad Becker. The lacquering/cutting process has always been fascinating to me. It’s not an "influence" strictly speaking, obviously, but their work is impressive and it is inspiring somehow, yes. There are also soundtracks and movies, of course : as such, the italian TV show "Gomorra" is a wonder ("Suburra" as well by the way). The guys from Mokadelic did an incredible work. And I really like Eric Rohmer's movies, even though there is little music in them. All these things have, one way or another, an influence. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* The mix gathers strictly unreleased productions and one song previously released in 2018, on the Modern House Quintet label. I tried to do something varied, quite heterogenous so that the listener - and me - cannot be bored. Therefore, some songs are more techno, some have a sort of an ethereal atmosphere whereas others have a more "housy" feeling. Some are sketches whereas others are more "completed". About the tracklisting, I simply wrote "unreleased" with a short indication next to it, merely because I don’t have an accurate title yet, haha. Tracklist:1. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the atmospheric one)2. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the jazzy/vibraphonic one)3. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the slow techno one)4. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the arpeggio one)5. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the techno bassy one)6. Modern House Quintet - LD 3 (MHQ 008)7. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the strictly techno one)8. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the jazzy one)9. Modern House Quintet - Unreleased (the jungle/breakbeat one) Want more music? Berlin-based DJ / Tresor resident. Mario always had a strong passion for the basement proof, bass driven facet of Techno. Born and raised in Potsdam, a town at the gates of Berlin, it was quite obvious that he got bit by the local Techno bug sooner or later. After early visits at the old Tresor club, inspired by the harsh, experimental sound and the pure atmosphere he soon started to dig deeper in the thing called Techno and sustainably found Hard Wax as the main educator in taste which helped him to define his own identity. His DJ sets are a blend of major influences of artists like James Ruskin, Surgeon, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood or Luke Slater and labels like Underground Resistance, Downwards, Basic Channel and Tresor Records. Successively he developed his DJ style and began playing at smaller events in his hometown. It was Alexander Kowalski who invited him to play at Tresor for the first time. After playing at the “New faces” and “Tresor.Next” event series he was appointed to the resident team of Tresor. As an integral part of the team Mario is also one of the curators of the “New faces” nights for quite a while now, where he is inviting young emerging artists that share the identical idea of Techno with the same splice of understatement. With Alex Kowalski, mostly under his d_func moniker, Mario is having an ongoing studio collaboration which has been resulting in releases and remixes on different labels, such as Torque, Paranoid Dancer, Damage Music and others. Follow us on SoundCloud to hear our label releases and grab some free downloads: http://soundcloud.com/monologues Girls of The Internet is the sound of a music-industry long-timer reinventing themselves, indulging their love of classic disco house while also producing soulful live organic cuts. Their mix for us is a riotous journey through house music past, present and future. *How would you describe your sound?* Patrick Adams making records for Dance Mania. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* The biggest influence for me right now is seeing people enjoy our music, it completely blows me away when people message to say they like our stuff, especially when women or members of the LGBTQ+ community. Electronic music is such a horrible schlong fest, and so many of the male DJs act so horrendously in the way they treat women at shows. It’s great to know we’re appealing to more than just banty lads. Another big influence is our collaborators; the vocalists and illustrators/painters we get to work with through the band are all amazing, and hugely inspirational to work with. Anybody who has ever met me will know how important Stereolab are to me, as I’ve probably tried to shame you into listening to them at some point. I love Chaka Khan, Patrick Adams. I could list musical influences for ages, but it would be pretty boring. I don’t have any big secrets nobody else has, and I’ve always tried to share music I love to whoever is listening to me. Some of my early influences in house were Pepe Bradock, Cajual, Basic Channel, Armand Van Helden, Henry Street, Masters At Work... I don’t listen to too much modern house — it has to be pretty incredible for me to need to add it to my collection. What I take away from other people’s music is how certain sounds work together; how a drum hit and a weird noise work together in a Prince record, or how a saturated kick in a Green Velvet record affects the mood of the track is where my brain goes. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* It’s mainly sample based stuff we’re releasing on the run up to our debut album. Normally we work with musicians and vocalists, but I’m completely obsessed with ‘90s disco house, so I made a load of tracks while the album comes together. Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy looping disco records was what started everything — disco loops and drum machines are the purest form of house music as far as I’m concerned. House should be fun, and I wanted to try and convey the fun side of Girls’ with these EPs. I feel like I’m cheating when I sample other people’s music, which is why I try and call it an ‘edit’ or ‘mixtape’ when I’m looping other people’s work. The non-sample, full band, full production stuff is; our debut single ‘When U Go' which got picked up by Classic, which is the first full piece of music I made myself. 'Fondness Makes The Heart Grow Absent', which we self released last year, and it’s already been licensed for a few big compilations this year. It started life as a remix I did for somebody that got rejected, so I took all the original parts I recorded for the remix — guitar, bass, cut them up, added some synths and turned it into a loose cover of ‘It’ll All Be Over’ by The Supreme Jubilees, with Gershom Brown on vocals. The last track on the mix is called ‘Humble’ and features ex-Brand New Heavies vocalist and one of my good buddies Linda Muriel. It’s the lead single from our upcoming album. It’s a 2-steppy garage-ish thing. I made a version with live instruments, but I've ended up using the demo version with me playing everything on keyboard for the album, as it was impactful than the live version. I wanted to use a bit more music from the album on this mix, but it’s a bit too early to play too much of it publicly. Oh also, there is a remix of a track I made with the Ballroom MC Princess Precious Ebony, who features heavily on the Viceland documentary series ’My House’, and is an incredible person and a pleasure to work with. It’ll probably be a B-side to one of the singles from the album. I’ve been involved in music for a long time behind the scenes, and I’m just amazed at the incredible reaction we get for Girls’ stuff so far. We have a small group of fans who are so supportive and send us such amazing messages all the time. It’s really humbling. The music industry can be a horrible place — often unpleasant people behaving awfully with shady agendas and negative energy. It’s amazing to be involved in something that’s just about positivity and making great music. W is the much-anticipated debut album of Waage, a young & exciting Reykjavik-based producer. His debut EP offers a spacious, texturally intoxicating and hypnotic minimal techno – a journey through rhythmatic musical landscapes. W1 is a ode to Basic Channel – a propulsive, yet delicate, mantra. The repetitive nature of it will take a hold of the listeners and project them into previously unknown state of mind. W6 is reminiscent of some of the finest works of legendary Icelandic techno producer Exos, who happens to be the mentor of this young up and coming artist. The whole EP is driven by curiosity and passion, and despite some obvious influences manages to offer something fresh and exotic for the adventurous music consumer. Thule Records is considered by many to be a pioneers in the field of dub-influenced techno music and was a starting point for many of Iceland‘s most renowned electronic musicians.

Episode - 110 Tension in the mix. [No Traklist] -- "A frog living in the well, is judging the extent of heaven by the edge of his well" Based on this chinese adage, William G. alias "Tension" always handled his musical influences and works to the exact opposite. Born in Lipsia (Germany) in 1988, he was interested in various styles of music already in his childhood. Inspired by the musical collection of his parents, he defined his roots in Rock, Metal and also nineties Soul and Hip Hop. By the first visits of local clubs and festivals, he discovered the electronic music scene and was fascinated by techno acts like Carl Craig, Jeff Mills or labels like Basic Channel, Perlon or even Ninja Tunes.Driven by the minimal Sounds of the millennium years, djing and producing weren't far away. Based on this mixed influences he always creates a certain deepness in his music, trying to express feelings and experiences in his sounds and dj sets. Music for the mind. Today’s Headphone Commute Mix is courtesy of Leon Michenere, aka Klavikon, who has been exploring a new approach to the prepared piano, expanding on the experimental works by John Cage and David Tudor. Indeed, this is an introductory opener to the mix, which takes off into a fascinating territory of haunting and percussive textures. Michener’s own music is influenced by artists such as Autechre, Basic Channel, Jeff Mills, Photek, Squarepusher and many more, an aspect which is clearly stated through his selection of pieces for this mix. We call in christmas with some powerful techno. This time with Kaelan from Italy. 1. What kind of artists inspire you? I'm pretty inspired by detroit and dub techno artists such as Basic Channel, Deepchord, Substance & Vainqueur, Echoplex, Derrick May, Claude Young and more.. 2. What kind of "sound" can we expect from Kaelan? The sound can be described as functional techno with hints of soul. 3. Whats up over there in Italy? Techno tips? I think there are some really interesting upcoming artists, proposing inspiring music... I can think for example at Roberto Bosco, Stenny, Emanuele Pertoldi or my partner in crime Hydergine... they are making outstanding stuff! 4. Whats up with you in the future? Releases, parties, etc Well, i have some ep that will be out in the next year. There is an upcoming vinyl release on my label Subosc, then, another one on Emmanuel's label "Arts". Kirill Matveev (a.k.a. 1.
