Tras la desaparición del imperio romano en Gran Bretaña la isla cayó en manos de un conjunto de pueblos llegados de la Europa continental, fundamentalmente de lo que hoy es Alemania y Dinamarca. Estos pueblos de origen germánico, los anglos, los sajones y los jutos, se apoderaron paulatinamente de la antigua Britannia romana, donde se encontraron con una población local, los britanos, que estaba tibiamente romanizada. Siempre se creyó que la invasión había sido violenta y se materializó desplazando a los britanos. Esta idea tan bien asentada y glosada por las crónicas de aquella época, entre ellas la de Beda el Venerable, ha evolucionado a raíz de los descubrimientos de la arqueología moderna. Fue un proceso mucho más orgánico y tranquilo en el curso del cual las distintas tribus se fueron colonizando el territorio y asimilando a los britanos. Conforme estos grupos se asentaron, la geografía política de la isla se fragmentó en una serie de reinos rivales conocidos como la Heptarquía. Estos reinos eran Northumbria, Mercia, Anglia Oriental, Essex, Kent, Sussex y Wessex. Este periodo fue una era de guerreros y jefes tribales, pero también el escenario de una de las conversiones al cristianismo más famosas de la historia de Europa. Los germanos abandonaron el paganismo y se pasaron en masa a la iglesia de Roma. En ello tuvo mucho que ver la llegada de la misión gregoriana a Kent en el año 597 y la influencia de las iglesias celtas desde el norte. Aquello marcó un renacimiento cultural que floreció especialmente en los monasterios. Fue en estos centros donde se preservó el conocimiento clásico y donde surgieron obras maestras de la literatura y el arte, como el poema épico Beowulf y los manuscritos iluminados que fusionaban la estética entrelazada germánica con la simbología cristiana. La estructura social anglosajona estaba rígidamente jerarquizada. A la cabeza estaba el rey y su séquito de nobles guerreros, conocidos como “thegns”, que estaban vinculados al monarca por lazos de lealtad personal. Debajo de ellos, la gran mayoría de la población estaba compuesta por los “ceorls”, hombres libres que cultivaban la tierra y formaban la base de la economía, que en la Gran Bretaña de entonces era eminentemente agraria. Esta relativa estabilidad se vio sacudida a finales del siglo VIII con la aparición de una nueva amenaza: las incursiones vikingas. Los ataques escandinavos desmantelaron casi todos los reinos anglosajones. Sólo quedó el de Wessex como último bastión de resistencia con el rey Alfredo el Grande a su cabeza. Alfredo detuvo el avance danés y emprendió ambiciosas reformas educativas y militares. Con los sucesores de Alfredo, especialmente el rey Athelstan, se consolidó por primera vez la idea de una Inglaterra unificada, la llamada “Englaland”. Este periodo de madurez política vio el desarrollo de instituciones administrativas algo más complejas, como el consejo de sabios o Witan, y la división territorial en condados o shires. A pesar de la conquista normanda en 1066, que marcó el fin de la era anglosajona, el legado de este pueblo perduró en el idioma inglés antiguo, en el sistema legal de derecho consuetudinario y en una estructura parroquial que sobreviviría durante siglos, lo que vendría a demostrar que los anglosajones no fueron simples invasores, sino los padres de lo que terminaría siendo Inglaterra. Para tratar este tema nos acompaña Yeyo Balbás, bien conocido por la audiencia de La ContraHistoria y que, aparte de ser toda una autoridad en lo referente a los visigodos, sabe mucho también de los anglosajones. (Lukas 19:8)Renungan: Ketika merayakan ulang tahun, selalu ada momen tiup lilin. Di momen tiup lilin inilah biasanya ada sedikit masalah: bingung cari korek api. Hal ini sering terjadi ketika yang hadir tidak ada yang merokok. Beda cerita kalau perayaan tersebut dihadiri oleh perokok, tentu saja sangat mudah mendapatkan korek api. Kita tidak mungkin bisa memberikan apa yang tidak kita punya. Jika Anda minta korek api kepada saya, jelas saya sulit untuk memberikannya. Bukan karena saya pelit, tapi karena saya memang tidak merokok. Sebaliknya, jika Anda memintanya kepada perokok, dengan mudah Anda mendapatkannya. Mengapa? Karena setiap saat mereka membawanya! Zakheus adalah seorang pemungut cukai yang menarik pajak lebih dari jumlah yang seharusnya. Suka memeras dan bertindak semena-mena terhadap rakyat. Sulit bagi Zakheus untuk berbuat baik kepada orang lain. Tapi begitu berjumpa dengan Yesus dan mengalami kasih-Nya, tiba-tiba saja Zakheus jadi murah hati. la membagi-bagikan uangnya kepada orang miskin. la mengembalikan uang berkali-kali lipat kepada orang yang telah ia peras. Bagaimana mungkin tiba-tiba Zakheus jadi murah hati? Sebenarnya ini bukan terjadi secara tiba-tiba, sebab sebelumnya Zakheus lebih dulu menerima kemurahan hati Tuhan. la menerima kasih, sebab itu ia bisa memberikan kasih itu kepada orang lain. Kisah tersebut di atas mungkin bisa menjawab pertanyaan, "Mengapa saya sulit mengasihi? Mengapa saya tidak bisa mengampuni?" Bukan karena kita memiliki watak keras. Bukan karena kita pendendam. Bukan juga karena kesalahan orang tersebut sangatlah besar. Tapi jawabannya adalah karena kita tidak mengalami kasih Allah. Kita tidak mungkin memberi dari sesuatu yang tidak kita punya. Kita tidak mungkin bisa mengasihi orang lain selama kita sendiri belum mengalami kasih Tuhan. Kita sulit mengampuni karena kita belum membuka hati untuk menerima pengampunan Tuhan. Begitu kita mengalami kasih Tuhan, mengasihi dan mengampuni bukan lagi menjadi sebuah kemustahilan, bahkan tidak lagi menjadi hal yang sulit bagi kita. Tuhan Yesus memberkati. Doa:Tuhan Yesus, jadikanlah hatiku seperti hati-Mu, hati yang mau mengampuni, mengasihi dan menerima setiap orang apa adanya sebagaimana Engkau mau menerima aku apa adanya. Amin. (Dod).

This is not a very good sign. It is a fact that Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura has condemned this process for neophytes. He has even stated in a song, pratiṣṭhāra tare, nirjanera ghare, tava hari-nāma kevala kaitava: “Sitting in a solitary place intending to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra is considered a cheating process.” This practice is not possible for neophytes at all. The neophyte devotee must act and work very laboriously under the direction of the spiritual master, and he must thus preach the cult of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Only after maturing in devotion can he sit down in a solitary place to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Himself did. Although Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, to teach us a lesson He traveled all over India continuously for six years and only then retired at Jagannātha Purī. Even at Jagannātha Purī the Lord chanted the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra in great meetings at the Jagannātha temple. The point is that one should not try to imitate Haridāsa Ṭhākura at the beginning of one's transcendental life. One must first become very mature in devotion and thus receive the approval of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Only at such a time may one actually sit down peacefully in a solitary place to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra and remember the lotus feet of the Lord. The senses are very strong, and if a neophyte devotee imitates Haridāsa Ṭhākura, his enemies (kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and mātsarya) will disturb and fatigue him. Instead of chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, the neophyte will simply sleep soundly. Cc Madhya 11.49-126 https://vedabase.io/en/library/cc/madhya/11/advanced-view/ ------------------------------------------------------------ In this context, there is a way in which Kṛṣṇa describes to Uddhava in the Eleventh Canto of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam that the soul is never really liberated from the material world, because it was never bound in the first place. There is no liberation unless you are actually bound to the material world. "Asaṅgo hi ayaṁ puruṣaḥ" — the living entity never had anything to do with it in the first place. So he is never really connected with it. This idea of "now he's liberated" is a misnomer. Kṛṣṇa says that — plain and clear. And so, you know, being more liberal with the idea of Nitya-siddha, if you go to the other side of the spectrum and you understand that those who are fully engaged with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu in service, they have nothing to do with the material world anymore, and they have assumed their original condition, which is nitya-siddha. It's also described how there are sādhana-siddhas, there are kṛpā-siddhas, and there are nitya-siddhas. And in most places, there is special consideration for the nitya-siddhas because they never touched the material world in the first place. But.. as Prabhupāda writes, "Siddha is siddha," whether it's sādhana-siddha or kṛpā-siddha or nitya-siddha. 'Siddha means siddha.' Sometimes people argue over this and say, "Yeah, but that guy's a sādhana-siddha or whatever." But siddha is siddha. Besides that, you're a soul; you never touched the material world in the first place. So, I think these purports are absolutely charming and encouraging, because it's what the devotees feel when they join the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Movement, Lord Caitanya's movement. It's so potent! In fact, one of the stories is about how a capitalist from Calcutta had gone to meet Babaji Maharaj where he was chanting in the field. Because this guy was rich, he thought, "Look, I have everything except for a guru. If I get a guru, then I've got everything—and the whole package! Not only am I the best materially, but everyone will say I have the best guru too, because who's more renounced than him?" So he went there and surrendered in the middle of the field, thinking something like, "You know, I will give you whatever you want. I'll build your little place." He was thinking, "What could he want? He's just sitting out here in the field." And then Babaji Maharaj said to him, "Okay, I'll accept you. I only have one thing to ask." He asked "What is that?" Maharaja said, "You sit down here with me and don't go home. That's the only alms I beg." And that person fled because he wasn't sincere. He was just going with an insincere request, with a material desire. But Prataparudra was different.
