In this episode of The Shoulder Physio Podcast, Dr Jared Powell sits down with Dr Mervyn Travers, physiotherapist, S&C coach, and researcher, to explore one of the most compelling frameworks in contemporary pain science: active inference. They discuss how this predictive brain model helps explain persistent musculoskeletal pain, why traditional exercise-based interventions might miss the mark, and how clinicians can use movement and context to shift a patient's pain experience. Merv blends philosophy, neuroscience, and clinical pragmatism in a way that's accessible, challenging, and highly relevant. Key talking points: What is active inference and how does it relate to predictive processing? The role of prior beliefs, culture, and clinical language in shaping pain Movement experimentation as a tool for model updating and recovery Why it's time to rethink how we prescribe exercise in pain rehab Clinical implications from landmark studies within the field that lend themselves to active inference A call for compassion, curiosity, and nuance in patient care Check out the Shoulder Physio Online Course here Connect with Jared and guests: Jared on Instagram: @shoulder_physio Jared on X: @jaredpowell12 Merv website: Home - Optimise Rehab Merv X: @mervtravers Merv Instagram: @optimise_rehab See our Disclaimer here: The Shoulder Physio - Disclaimer

Born 1004CE in present-day Tajikistan then under control of the Ghaznavid dynasty, Abū Muʿīn al-Dīn Nasir Khusraw was an Ismaili convert and missionary who became better known for his poetry. To discuss with us today the life, works and legacy of Nasir Khusraw is Ali Hammoud. Ali Hammoud is a PhD candidate at Western Sydney University. He is broadly interested in Shīʿīsm and Islamicate intellectual history. Welcome Ustad Ali! Q1. I think it's important we set the scene for the socio-political dynamics in which Nasir Khusraw lived. There were two major competing polities claiming to be the ultimate representatives of the Prophet's legacy: the Ismaili Shia Fatimid caliphate in Cairo and the Sunni Abbasid caliphate of Baghdad. We can imagine it as a kind of Cold War era that existed between the Soviet and the US after WWII with smaller entities in between them having to choose a loyalty or hedge their bets. Q2. Nasir Khusraw lived in Merv in present day Turmenistan and he worked for the Sunni Turkic Seljuk administration before his conversion to Ismailism and joining the Fatimid court. Tell us more about his life and career. Q3. He has a number of works philosophical and literary. Describe them for us before giving us details characterising his divan. Q4. What further readings and resources do you recommend for us on Nasir Khusrau? Q5 Finally before we end, give us a sample of the work of Nasir Khusrau in the original Persian and translation. The exuberantly effervescent Jo Anne Worley, queen of the quip and paradigm of the pizzazz, turns our studio into a cabaret club this week, dazzling and delighting with stories of show biz daring do… her fearless stage style, her bold reach for brilliance, behind the scenes lore from the set of Laugh-In and a fabulous flurry of anecdotes and memories from an unrivaled career. The girl from Lowell, Indiana knew she was destined for the business when she distracted the most vicious teacher in her two-room schoolhouse with a hilarious crack that saved the hide of another student. After high school she hit the ground and then the train running out of her tiny town towards the Pickwick Players and a life in theater, where she literally ate the scenery, salting and snacking on a tomato during a key court scene in The Mikado. Jo Anne built an all singing and dancing nightclub act because, at the time, women did not talk on stage. Her comic gifts so impressed Merv Griffin's wife, it lead to her frequent appearances with Merv on his show and a chance to audition for George Schlatter, creator of Laugh-In.Her iconic role on that revolutionary sketch show earned her a permanent spot in pop culture and entertainment history and she shares with us some deep insider info: How John Wayne gallantly lifted her down from the joke wall and that time a mime, Marcel Marceau, perfectly impersonated this vocally resonant performer without a sound. No one makes an entrance, or unleashes a song parody or lights into a Bob Hope story like Jo Anne Worley! So strap in for hilarity. What did Jo Anne say to Jerry Lewis to earn her spot in his comedy workshop? What's it like to share a fence with Jonathon Winters? in this last episode of the early Syriac church fathers we will learn about Ishodad of Merv (mid-9th century) was an East Syriac bishop and biblical commentator known for his scholarly contributions to the Church of the East. His epithet “of Merv” suggests he may have been born in the city of Merv in Central Asia (modern Turkmenistan), though this is not certain. He became the bishop of Ḥdatta (Haditha) in Assyria, near the Great Zab river in what is now northern Iraq, around 837 CE. In 852/853, after the death of Patriarch Abraham II, Ishodad was put forward as a candidate for Catholicos-Patriarch of the Church of the East. It's an IAQ Deep Dive…part two! Matt welcomes Sean Harris back to the studio to continue their discussion indoor air quality improvements for existing homes, focusing on mold prevention, HVAC upgrades, filtration, and dehumidification—especially in hot, humid climates like Texas. Sean emphasizes that mold issues often stem from leaky ductwork in unconditioned spaces, poor ventilation, and high humidity, leading to compromised air quality. Instead of cleaning mold, he recommends removing contaminated materials and improving source control. For HVAC systems, Sean suggests keeping ductwork in conditioned space, using MERV 13+ filters, and installing a ventilating dehumidifier to maintain humidity below 50%. He warns against running HVAC fans continuously, as this can pull humid air into the system, worsening mold issues. He also recommends in-room HEPA filtration (isuch as IQAir or Austin Air) over whole-home air purifiers. They discuss (and advise against) gimmicky air purification methods like UV lights and ionizers, which can create harmful byproducts. Instead, homeowners should monitor IAQ with smart sensors, track humidity, and optimize their home's ventilation and filtration. Sean emphasizes "optimization over maximization"—cost-effective solutions like air sealing, replacing moldy ductwork, and using high-quality air filters rather than full HVAC overhauls. Both Matt & Sean encourage homeowners to prioritize practical, science-backed IAQ improvements for a healthier living environment.Thank you to episode sponsor Mbrico. Live from the ROCKWOOL studio, Matt and Steve explore how to design and construct homes optimized for extreme health, focusing on mold resistance, superior indoor air quality (IAQ), and moisture control. They discuss essential strategies such as building tight, well-ventilated homes to prevent mold growth, using high-performance dehumidifiers, and implementing advanced HVAC systems with MERV 13+ or HEPA filtration. Matt and Steve highlight the importance of managing bulk water through proper site grading, overhangs, and pitched roofs while also considering leak detection systems and waterproofed mechanical rooms. For improved air quality, Matt and Steve emphasize eliminating duct board, minimizing flex duct, and opting for metal ductwork, which is easier to clean and prevents microbial growth. They also discuss alternatives to standard drywall, such as fiberglass-faced drywall, American clay plaster, or traditional lath and plaster to reduce mold risk. Additionally, ductless HVAC systems, like mini-splits, can further enhance IAQ by eliminating dust-collecting ductwork. The episode also touches on cost considerations, with case studies showing how clients with severe allergies or mold sensitivities have significantly benefited from controlled indoor environments. Whether you're a builder, architect, or homeowner looking to create a healthier home, this episode provides expert insights into mold-resistant construction, high-IAQ design, and smart moisture management. We're back after a much-needed break, and Erick explains the reasons at the start of the show. Erick, Merv, and Zack discussed the wedding and reception. During this time, Erick and Merv learned Zack's mom's name because they had been calling her Mrs. Stacks. Merv was thrilled that the check cleared, and he managed to get some good photos, no matter the cost. Sadly, Erick lost his dad over the break, and he and Merv want to talk about his passing. While some major porn sites are blocked in Florida, that doesn't stop Zack from taking matters into his own hands. You'll hear all about this and more on today's show.
