We spend about 90% of our time indoors. But what's actually in that air we breathe, and why does it matter so much for people with asthma, allergies, and eczema? This is part two of our series about indoor air quality. We discuss how you can improve your indoor air quality. Kortney shares her experience living in Germany, where ventilating your home isn't just a suggestion, it's practically a lifestyle. We also go room by room with practical tips you can actually use, from washing your sheets in hot water to why that scented candle might need to go. Part one covered what causes bad indoor air quality and what causes health problems for people with asthma and allergic diseases. What we cover in part two about indoor air quality The art of Lüften, aka house burping: Fully opening your windows for 5 to 10 minutes is better than cracking them all day, but skip it during peak pollen season. How to reduce dust mites in your bedroom: Hot water washes, dust mite covers, humidity control between 30 and 50 percent, and keeping stuffed animals off the bed. What to know about air purifiers: HEPA filters catch particles, carbon filters catch chemicals, and size matters for your room. Some cleaning products may make things worse: Choose fragrance-free products, avoid aerosols and scented candles, and wear a mask while cleaning. Kitchen and bathroom tips: Run exhaust fans during and after cooking or showering, check for leaks, and watch your shower curtain for mold. Advocating for better air at school and work: Ask about ventilation and MERV filters, and pay attention if your symptoms improve on weekends. This festive episode takes listeners aboard the WAOL Express for a Christmas journey through Sevierville, Tennessee, including a visit to the breathtaking Forbidden Caverns. Along the way, the crew spotlights the holiday films OH. WHAT FUN. and MERV., blending travel, storytelling, and seasonal cheer.
The crew dives headfirst into a mystery that no homeowner wants to face: a house smelling like it's been sprayed by a skunk. What starts as a bizarre and embarrassing odor problem turns into a deep exploration of HVAC systems, air exchangers, furnace filters, and a little-known issue called Dirty Sock Syndrome. Along the way, JJ breaks down how skunk smells can travel through ventilation systems, how mold and dirty evaporator coils can mimic those odors, and why regular HVAC maintenance—like filter changes, MERV ratings, UV lights, and seasonal servicing—actually matters. There's also a crash course in central air conditioning, energy efficiency, and what first-time homeowners should realistically expect when upgrading their systems. Send us a textA father that gives birth, a horse that says “no,” and an ER doctor who wants to keep you out of the hospital—this episode brings science and everyday choices into sharp focus. We start with a mind-bending dive into seahorses, where males carry the pregnancy and build a placenta-like environment from skin. New research shows familiar pregnancy genes at work inside the brood pouch, but with an unexpected hormonal switch: androgens, not estrogens, drive gestation. It's evolution repurposing its toolkit—and a powerful reminder that sex roles in nature are more flexible than we think. From there, we move into animal-assisted therapy and the role of consent in touch. A new study comparing dogs and horses found that forced interactions with horses raised heart rate and lowered HRV, signaling more stress, while choice calmed people down. Dogs showed no significant difference between conditions, suggesting human perception and species-specific behavior shape outcomes. If you run therapy programs, the insight is simple and humane: build animal choice into sessions, especially with horses, and track long-term welfare alongside human benefits. Then ER physician Dr. Shazma Mithani joins us to turn insight into prevention. We talk helmets for anything on wheels or snow, why e‑scooters drive more severe injuries per use than bikes, and how regular checkups and screening prevent emergencies before they start. We break down wildfire smoke—how particulates inflame lungs and harm the heart and brain—plus when to wear a well-fitted N95 outside and how to upgrade home air with MERV 11–13 filters or HEPA purifiers. Finally, we tackle measles: an airborne virus that lingers for hours, demands 95% vaccination for herd immunity, and is best stopped with two doses of MMR. Unsure where to get trusted answers? Episode quotes: "Below about 0.4 microns, many low-cost PM sensors are basically guessing—right where wildfire smoke and aerosols live." — Sissi Liu "Electrostatic filters can look great at first—and then fall off a cliff in smoke. Pressure drop won't warn you." — Sissi Liu "Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge." — Carl Sagan Eric digs into the "fresh air" myth with Sissi Liu, CEO/co-founder of Metalmark Innovations and active ASHRAE committee member. Sissi explains why "outdoor = fresh" is context-dependent—urban pollution, agricultural activity, and especially wildfire smoke can make outdoor air worse than indoor air. Because air quality is dynamic, she pushes for comparing indoor and outdoor conditions in real time and ventilating intelligently, with attention to the energy cost of conditioning outside air. They then get nerdy on sensors and filters. Many low-cost PM2.5 laser-scattering sensors struggle below ~0.4 µm and can misread certain particle types (e.g., dark/black carbon), which matters because smoke and pathogen-carrying aerosols often live in the ~0.1–0.3 µm range. On filtration, Sissi contrasts mechanical vs. electrostatically charged media: electrostatic filters start efficiently with low pressure drop but can lose effectiveness within hours in smoke events. In contrast, mechanical media hold up better (though at higher pressure). She highlights ASHRAE 52.2 Appendix J (loaded efficiency) and argues that standards—along with reporting practices—must evolve for wildfire realities. Key takeaways "Fresh air" is conditional: check outdoor AQ (and indoor) before cranking up ventilation. IAQ is dynamic; test and compare locally rather than assuming static conditions. Consumer PM sensors can under-count the tiniest and darkest particles; treat data with caveats. Wildfire smoke clusters in the most-penetrating particle size (~0.1–0.3 µm) for many filters. Electrostatic filters may degrade fast in smoke; pressure drop alone won't reveal failure. ASHRAE standards (e.g., 52.2 Appendix J, SGPC-44) are evolving—industry needs to catch up. A chilly room tells a story, and today we decode it with clear, practical advice you can use before your next utility bill arrives. We kick off with a quick nod to football, then dive straight into comfort science: why that “burnt” smell appears when the heat first comes on, how long it should last, and the simple signs that mean it's time to call a pro. From there, we get hands-on with the fixes that matter most—filters, ducts, insulation, and air sealing—so you can keep more of the warmth you already pay for.We break down MERV ratings without the jargon and explain why “higher” can backfire in a home system. You'll learn why cheap filters swapped monthly often outperform pricey options left too long, and how pets and foot traffic downstairs change your replacement schedule. We unpack conductive vs convective heat transfer to show where heat actually escapes, then map out a weekend DIY plan: carefully pop interior casing, add low-expansion foam around doors and windows, and reseat trim for immediate draft control. We also spotlight hidden losses at the air handler, where failed tape and loose ducts send conditioned air into attics and crawl spaces.Choosing a heat source is easier with context. Modern electric heat pumps maintain comfort efficiently; gas still delivers fast warmups for large or intermittently used spaces; and dual-fuel systems blend both. We share when each shines, plus budget-friendly ways to add targeted warmth with electric fireplaces that move real air and run flame-only for year-round ambiance. Rounding things out, we compare crawl spaces and slabs: site slope, repair access, HVAC placement, and long-term costs that often get overlooked during planning.Ready to make your home feel better with fewer dollars? Follow the show, share this episode with a friend who's fighting cold corners, and leave us a quick review with your best winter comfort tip. Your ideas help shape future topics and keep the conversation useful for everyone.
