El culebrón del Telescopio de Treinta Metros dura ya casi diez años. Este enorme telescopio, que debería haberse instalado en Hawái bajo el auspicio del gobierno de Estados Unidos, se he encontrado con todo tipo de piedras en su camino. Primero fue la oposición de algunos grupos de indígenas y nacionalistas hawaianos, y este año se ha topado con la administración Trump, que anunció antes del verano que retiraba la financiación al proyecto. En este contexto, el gobierno de España anunció que estaba dispuesto a comprometer 400 millones de euros para que el telescopio se instalara en el observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, en la isla de La Palma. Y hace unos días el consorcio del telescopio anunció que abría oficialmente negociaciones con España para ver cómo se podría hacer eso, si es que algún día se hace. No hay ninguna decisión tomada, pero parece claro que el proyecto se aleja de Estados Unidos y no tiene muchas alternativas.
