This is episode 223, the calliper and the lens Gustav Fritsch in the southern Light. A very quick thank you to Professor Johan Fourie at Stellenbosch Department of Economics who invited me to be part of a workshop about improving the visibility of economic history. What an amazing experience. This episode of our series is following on from 1863, into 1864, where the movement of people became as demographic phenomenon — driven by economics and innovations. Let's swing our attention to Robben Island, it's a warm morning in November 1863 and a bearded German arrived armed with various photographic apparatus and guns, he was on an expedition. German tourists can be found on Robben Island these days, but they don't carry guns and their cameras are Canons. Gustav Fritsch had arrived with many other accoutrements - because he was on a scientific mission. He was an anthropologist, and part of a curious genre now largely forgotten — the “racial type” photographer — men who believed the camera could capture the science of human difference, stamping evolution's hierarchy onto paper. In their lens, the body became data. A century and a half later, modern influencers use images to shape a kind of social order — their self-curated faces, botox-bright and algorithm-approved offer a new kind of taxonomy, no less performative, and perhaps no less pseudoscientific. So as our friend Gustav Fritsch set up his apparatus and guns, there on the windy but warm Robben Island of November 1863, he became part of what would be the field of criminology and .. eugenics. In this period, the use of photography was part of a privileged administrative practice, part of medical anatomy, anthropology, psychiatry, part of the professionalised emerging social sciences, tying in public health, urban planning, sanitation. It was at this point that the two divergencies in the science began to take shape, one was honorific, honouring the differences, noting the diversity, exciting the senses with these truly stunning pictures of South Africans in 1863, versus the other, the repressive, the oppressive. Stamping people with their racial characteristics. Unlike today, each picture took at least 20 seconds to complete. Imagine asking your contemporary subject to sit dead still for 20 seconds while you point your iPhone at their noggin. 20 seconds is longer than an entire TikTok video that explains the meaning of life. But there is not doubt, that the most remarkable thing about Fritsch's photos were the diversity. He photographed many chiefs and their families, capturing African nobility at the time. His image of amaThemba chief Stokwe ka-Ndlela is slightly blurred, Stokwe refused to sit still. Other images of the incarcerated on Robben Island are historic, folkloric and well, just stunning. These include Xoxo on of Ngqika, brother of Sandile, Siyolo kaMdushane, one of the Gcaleka chiefs, Dilima, son of Phato of the Gqunukhwebe. This strange German was doing South African history a favour, recording the regal faces of amaXhosa royalty for posterity. After Robben Island, Gustav Fritsch and his apparatus rolled along in an oxwagon to Cathcart in the eastern Cape where he took more photos of Anta kaNgqika the 3rd paramount chief of the amaRharhabe, whereupon Fritsch continued to Stutterheim, where he set up his stool and massive tripod and took remarkable photos of Sandile kaNgqika. Not satisfied, this 19th century paparazzi, this collector of images set off northwards to Bechuanaland. He photographed Bakwena chief Sechele I a Motswasele or "Rra Mokonopi" as well as his son Sibelo. Bamagwatho chief Kama was next, grand old man of Botswana. The ancestor of the famous Khama family of the twentieth century. And while Gustav Fritsch wandered the veld with his camera and his paraphernalia, convinced he was capturing some scientific truth, the people he encountered were being absorbed into a global archive — not as individuals, but as specimens, artefacts.

In this episode, Johan and Gustav welcome Johanna, Head of AI and Analytics at Itera in Bergen, for an insightful discussion on Microsoft Fabric and the evolving world of data platforms. Johanna shares her expertise on how Microsoft Fabric represents a significant shift in data architecture by unifying multiple tools (Power BI, Synapse, Azure Data Factory) into a single platform. The conversation explores how this integration is democratizing data access, allowing business users rather than just IT specialists to work with enterprise data. The trio discusses the technical evolution from traditional SQL databases to modern Delta Lakes environments, noting that while the engineering aspects have become simpler, proper data governance remains essential. Johanna introduces the concept of "Full Stack Fabric Developers" who can now work across the entire data pipeline thanks to the platform's accessibility. They also touch on practical considerations when working with Dynamics 365 data through Fabric Link, addressing common questions about data refresh rates and the realities of near-real-time analytics in business environments.

Welcome to the latest episode of WAB Podcast! In this episode, we explored WAB Wild, WAB's very own outdoor learning program, and one that's all about adventure, teamwork, and connecting with nature. We were joined by Stephen Boyko, the coordinator of WAB Wild, and two Grade 8 students, Gustav and Kenzie, who shared their unforgettable experiences. From abseiling to cooking breakfast under the open sky, we uncovered how this program builds resilience, fosters community, connects with classroom learning, and changes perspectives on sustainability. Led by coordinator Stephen Boyko, WAB Wild's philosophy is rooted in experiential education. Stephen explained that the goal of the program is to build a lasting appreciation for nature, strengthen community bonds, and develop personal resilience through challenges. When Gustav first arrived at WAB in Grade 7, he felt unfamiliar with the environment and the English language. But everything changed when he joined WAB Wild. The outdoor experience helped him build connections with both his peers and his teachers. The program's trust-based activities-like hiking in small groups through the woods or navigating a lake by canoe, helped him feel both independent and supported. Gustav added that you could feel a trust in yourself and a kind of community trust with your classmates and teachers. For Kenzie, returning to the same campsite each year brought back memories while creating new ones. From geocaching adventures in Grade 6 to an abseiling challenge in Grade 7, each activity pushed her boundaries and brought her closer to her peers. She also recounted her memory of completing the water trip on canoes with her friends, where they had to trust each other to avoid tipping over and getting wet in the lake. Stephen emphasized the deeper lessons behind this program, which is helping the students develop a love for nature and the skills to protect it. From composting food waste to understanding the impact of their actions on the environment, the students carried these values and learnings back to their classrooms and homes, along with deeper friendships, shared memories, changed perspectives on sustainability, and newfound resilience. This podcast discusses Dr. Peebles's forthcoming book, The First and Last Bank: Climate Change, Currency, and a New Carbon Commons, co-authored with the artist and illustrator Benjamin Luzzatto. The conversation centers around the book's groundbreaking proposal: a bank that would enable us to seize carbon from the atmosphere and offer a profound method for addressing climate change. Gustav draws on the anthropological archive to point out how currencies have been based on all manner of objects, from tobacco leaves and salt to gold and collateralized debt obligations. Building on Annette Weiner's famous argument about the “inalienable possessions,” Gustav points out that the key thing that this assortment of goods shares is a communal belief that such objects can harness and organize economic growth. Gustav describes how atmospheric carbon could be sequestered in the earth by millions of currency users and the communally owned banks they rely on. Dr. Peebles explains how developments in digital currencies and the biosequestration of carbon have, together, made a new and radical intervention in the climate battle possible: a nonproprietary currency backed by sequestered carbon. This new currency could be managed via Wikipedia-style open-source policies that privilege sustainability and equity over endless growth and pollution. Because it is backed by sequestered carbon, the use of the currency would draw atmospheric carbon out of the atmosphere and deposit it back into the ground, following a mirror trajectory of gold during the era of the international gold standard. More information about the book can be found here: https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262049641/the-first-and-last-bank/ Gustav Peebles is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University. Before that, he taught at The New School in New York City. His publications, including a book entitled, The Euro and Its Rivals, as well as a range of academic and popular articles, track credit, debt, money, and the diverse struggles to regulate and manage these vital economic phenomena throughout human history. Most recently, he has been exploring digital currencies, including work on the Swedish Central Bank's e-currency proposal, as well as a wilder idea that leverages digital currency as a potential tool for fighting climate change.
