This Duluth native is releasing her ninth album, Bones, on July 1. In addition to being an accomplished violin player and vocalist, she is a visual artist, author, a Master of Yoga, and a teacher of music and yoga. Her new album was recorded during the pandemic and several songs reflect those difficult times. We found out more and heard some songs when she joined us in the studio on June 29th. Ida Jo
About This Episode When it comes to making music with both extraordinary passion and exceptional chops, few acts today can surpass the sheer excellence of The War And Treaty. Newly signed to Rounder Records—and named the 2019 Emerging Act of the Year by Americana Music Association—the husband-and-wife team of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount-Trotter deliver a dynamic sound that joyfully blends Southern soul with elements of gospel, country, rock-and-roll, and blues. Also known for their phenomenal live show, the Nashville-based duo are now gearing up to make their Rounder debut with a sophomore album showcasing their boundless energy and tremendous generosity as songwriters and performers. Despite the deep sense of communion that infuses their music, Michael and Tanya hail from wildly different backgrounds. Originally from just outside Washington, D.C., Tanya discovered her supreme vocal skills at a young age and promptly pursued a career in music and acting. Meanwhile, Michael grew up in Cleveland and D.C., spending part of his childhood in homeless shelters and later enlisting in the U.S. Army. While stationed in one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces several years after 9/11, he gained access to a piano and quickly captivated his fellow troops with his powerful vocal presence. Soon tasked with writing and performing songs in memoriam to his unit’s fallen soldiers, Michael cultivated a distinct songwriting voice that he further developed upon returning home. After he and Tanya shared the stage at a music festival, the two began creating music together, eventually marrying and forming The War And Treaty. Their EP Down to the River arrived in July 2017, and the duo made their full-length debut with Healing Tide—a widely acclaimed effort. The Associated Press called them, “…a powerhouse R&B duo who sound as though they were born to sing together,” while Billboard went on to claim that, “The music world…has definitely shown that it’s ready to love The War and Treaty.” About Michael Perry Michael Perry is a New York Times bestselling author, humorist and radio show host from New Auburn, Wisconsin. Ida Jo, musician and Ghosh Yoga teacher, reached out to J to talk about the research project she is undertaking on Woman of Yoga. Ida worked alongside Jerome Armstrong while he was writing his book, Calcutta Yoga, and is picking up the thread to tell some of the untold stories of woman yogis. They also discuss Ida’s music and art, aspects of prescriptive or therapeutic yoga in the Gosh tradition, the grind of creative pursuits, and the importance of sharing stories. We know the stories about the men from India who taught yoga. What is still missing, as is often the case with history, are the stories of the women. These women were yogis, strong women, circus performers, teachers and authors, yet they have been forgotten. If history had been written differently, they would be the ones we know and celebrate. Ida Jo is a yoga acharya. She is the co-author of the Ghosh Yoga Practice Manuals and has edited and published several historic yoga manuals from Kolkata, India. She works closely with Ghosh's Yoga College in Kolkata and teaches yoga internationally. Check out Episode 018 for Ida’s first appearance on Dharma Talk, where shared her dharma here for the first time. In this episode, you'll hear from Ida on: The mission of the Women of Yoga project, and how surprising discoveries in Kolkata, India have opened the doors to provocative questions underlying gender dynamics in yoga even today The Bengali circus strong-woman turned yoga therapist and the published women's yoga author/teacher, who were both forgotten in the annals of history 3 highlights and 3 open questions from her research thus far, and how you can help bring these stories to light What Ida has learned about herself through her deep dive into the Women of Yoga Project, and how curiosity has evolved into activism Announcements: Join me for upcoming workshops in NYC; Austin, TX; and Bucerias, Mexico: henrywins.com/events Apply for the 300-hour YTT at Lighthouse Yoga School. In this episode, you’ll hear from Ida and Scott on: How a traditional understanding of dharma contradicts the American dream, and how we can reconcile the two and live a yogic life in modern day Stumbling into the historiography of yoga by accident and their journey to Calcutta, which paved the way for exploration and connection that neither of them had planned or expected What an individualized, prescribed approach to yoga looks like, and how teachers can apply it to group classes in the US Announcements: Sign up for 300-hour Advanced Jared McCann Yoga teacher training this July at Lighthouse Yoga School.
