In this episode of The Retreat Leaders Podcast, Shannon sits down with Kim DeMoss - Retreat Ranch's Executive Assistant, Yoga Teacher Training host, and long-time retreat collaborator - to talk about what it's really like to experience retreats from both sides: hosting and supporting. From her early days hosting retreats with Shannon to now managing the logistics behind the scenes, Kim shares candid insights on burnout, boundaries, work-life balance, and how she found her groove in the retreat industry. They also dive into the digital evolution of the industry - how AI and online visibility are reshaping the way leaders must market their retreats - and why self-awareness is key to finding your place in this ever-changing landscape. Whether you're leading retreats, supporting them, or figuring out which role fits best, this episode will give you real-world perspective, practical advice, and a reminder that your version of success doesn't have to look like anyone else's. Key Takeaways Retreat leadership has many layers — and not everyone is meant to be front and center. Supporting retreats can be just as fulfilling as leading them (and sometimes less stressful). Work-life balance matters — especially for women juggling careers, families, and personal growth. The retreat industry is evolving fast with AI and digital marketing — adapt or find your unique niche. Attracting the right participants is key to creating aligned, transformational retreat experiences. Streamlining your focus can lead to more fulfillment and sustainable success. A major barrier for many people interested in yoga teacher training is the assumption that it is only for certain kinds of people—whether that's deep and spiritual, energetic and outgoing, irresistibly charismatic, or highly skilled at yoga postures. In this short excerpt from Episode 103, Teacher Training Myths, host Rachel and fellow teacher trainer Dana Diament share that the truth is that teaching yoga is as much about holding space for students to be themselves as it is about instructing yoga poses and practices. They also share details of the Yoga Medicine Online 200-hour Teacher Training 2026 intake and a deep discount available right now. — Show Notes: Myths about who YTT is for [2:12] Find your own voice, range, and teaching style [4:12] Learning to communicate with groups, as yourself [10:10] Teaching as holding space [13:00] — Links Mentioned: Watch this episode on YouTube Yoga Medicine® 200HR Yoga Teacher Training Listen to the full Yoga Medicine® Podcast Episode 103: Teacher Training Myths You can learn more about this episode, and see the full show notes at YogaMedicine.com/podcast-149. This week my guest is Philadelphia-based yoga teacher, Matthew Shaw. Matthew joined the Jason Crandell Yoga Method team as our Lead Teacher Training Mentor this year and has been a longtime student of Jason's. What I didn't know until a few weeks ago is that Matthew spent 20 years in a previous life as a successful opera singer, performing on major stages across Europe—including Germany, Austria, and Hungary. In this conversation, Matthew shares how, in the second half of his career, just as he was really taking off, anxiety and depression decided to tag along. He talks openly about imposter syndrome, how he found solace through yoga and Western meds (you know I love my meds so I'm here for it!) and how his whole journey lead him to where he is today. We spend the second half of the conversation focused on retreats, why they are so vital, and how he creates intentional, supportive spaces for his students to both adventure and reset. We talk about:Why success didn't solve his self-doubt—in fact, it made it worseThe cultural pressures of perfectionism in classical performanceHis transition to becoming a yoga teacher and community builderThe joy he finds leading yoga retreats around the worldWhy retreats offer so much more than a temporary escape—and how they can ripple outward to impact our daily livesYou can find shownotes here: yogalandpodcast.com/episode362We've got two YTT events coming up! I loved this conversation with Dr. Bri because she not only delves into practical techniques for pelvic floor release, sharing insights on effective cues for yoga teachers to enhance awareness and how to reconnect with the pelvic floor, but she also emphasizes the importance of understanding the pelvic area as a site of emotional storage and energetic power.
