«Maggie Rogers ist ready for take off» titelte Sounds! bei ihrem letzten Album «Surrender». Ready for take off?

For our first Record Club of the new year, we attempt the modest task of tackling one of the biggest, if not the single biggest, pop LPs of all time, Michael Jackson's THRILLER, following the recent celebration of its 40th anniversary. How does the record hold up today? As an album, does it live in the shadow of its singles or does it hold up front-to-back? How do those singles land today, and what do they say about Michael's ambitions and vision for his artistic persona? And what's the deal with The Girl Is Mine? Join the conversation in the comments, and let us know what you think of this landmark record.
I don't want that...

Please join us in welcoming Demi Michelle to our studio to chat with Heart of Indie Radio Host Captain Eddie Heartfelt, charismatic, and authentic are three words used to describe Demi Michelle's music. The Pittsburgh-based pop and country songwriter turns her life experiences into songs that touch the hearts of her listeners through captivating storytelling in her lyrics and memorable melodies. She greatly looks up to Julia Michaels, Kelsea Ballerini, and Taylor Swift, three incredible songwriters who share their stories in raw and truthful ways. Demi strives to remain honest and authentic as a songwriter in her own music and during her collaborations with others. Demi pieced together her songwriting passion over the years. Her musicianship shines through, being a classically-trained pianist and knowledgeable about music theory. Also being a creative writer and in graduate school for her MFA in Writing Popular Fiction, Demi is always finding ways to blend her musical talent and storytelling in powerful ways. Demi kicked off her songwriting journey in 2019. After releasing several singles, she delivered her debut album, Dear Diary, on October 15, 2021. This eleven-track album, which includes Demi's popular single, “Will I Ever,” truly gives listeners a glimpse into Demi's heart and story. The songs capture honesty and vulnerability, much like diary entries do. Demi wrote this album for herself to explore her thoughts, feelings, and insecurities. Through writing Dear Diary, she has gone on a journey of self-discovery. On January 28, 2022, Demi was invited onto her hometown station, 100.7 STAR Pittsburgh, to be the first artist on the morning show's new segment, Bubba Show Live and Local Music Spotlight. Along with an interview, “Will I Ever” aired during the show, making it Demi's first play on top 40 radio. Demi's debut chapter earned her two nominations at the 8th Annual Josie Music Awards, which will be held in October at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. She received nominations for Pop Artist of the Year and Pop Album of the Year for Dear Diary. The sun has set on Dear Diary, and Demi is ready for her next chapter. On May 20, she released her fiery pop-country single, “You Get What You Give,” which is the lead single off of her upcoming five-track EP, It Is What It Is.

Kiki ist u.a. For three decades Pufferbellies was one of the biggest and brightest stars of Cape Cod after dark thanks to the popularity of its owner and Happy Hour legend John Morgan. There was a time in the 19th century that Rhode Island was seen as the vampire capital of America. It took the one-time biggest band in the world and added techno beats and disco balls. The album was not a success and left a stain on the band's reputation that took years to wash off. Der amerikanische Musikjournalist Randall Roberts hat es sogar als “most important pop album of the last 40 years“ bezeichnet – also als wichtigstes Pop-Album der letzten 40 Jahre. This week Keith Montena and special guest Carly Giacoio discuss Lorde's sophomore studio album, "Melodrama". The album gained a reputation of acclaim upon release in 2017, but failed to make waves in terms of hits. This sparks a conversation about where Lorde fits in the pop landscape, and how this album positions her future releases. Scott, Karl, and Trent discuss Depeche Mode's 1990 album Violator, a synth-pop smash. Featuring nine tracks of synthesizer dominant grooves, this English electronic music band created what Trent calls "a perfect album." The trio discusses how this highly stylized exploration of the dark side of human emotion became a mainstream, chart-climbing album. Scott says, "I think this shows a sinister, dark worldview and a yearning for some sort of intense experience that those Gen X kids had." Still, there seems to be growing interest in this music outside the core goth audience. Trent says, "It's really this artificial world that Depeche Mode is creating and asking you to step into. It has a mechanical heartbeat that's a little alienating, a little dark. I think that is a key part of this album's aesthetic." Tune in for more music and ideas, brought to you by onlinegreatbooks.com.

Is there anything Griff can't do? On today's episode we break down her seemingly perfect debut mixtape which includes her hit single "Black Hole." Looking at the impact her idolization of Taylor Swift has had in her songwriting, we analyze how Griff's ability to write, produce, perform, and creative direct her mixtape all add up to flawless debut. Diving into the songs, we debate whether having a stand alone ballad positively or negatively impacts the perception of the completed work. Digging into her lyricism, we discuss whether simple, poetic storytelling or catchy hooks make a song stand out more. Follow us on instagram HERE

«So confused who I have been, who I haven't», besingt die amerikanische Singer-Songwriterin Lomelda aka Hannah Read aus Texas tagebuchartig ihre Unsicherheit.

What separates the good from the great is persistence, not giving up, especially in uncertain times. This applies in all area of life. Andy Grammer has taken the music world by storm with a succession of pop hits, seven of which are certified gold or better. However, if you were to ask Grammer what he's most proud of he would tell you that he relishes in the privilege to impact fan's lives through music and culture. His latest album Naive went straight to #1 Pop Album the day of release and included his latest hit single, “Don't Give Up on Me.” As a writer and poet, Grammer has written hundreds of songs with other Grammy nominated artists (One Republic, Galantis, R3hab, Backstreet Boys, Miranda Lambert, and Hunter Hayes), and many of them have been placed in TV and Film. His journey was far from an easy one - and he had to work unbelievably hard for his talent and success every step of the way. He played and busked on street corners in California for years before somebody took notice of him, and gave him a chance! His story is full of perseverance and is inspiring, motivating and actionable for everyone to learn from. To learn more about Andy visit him on social media @andygrammer--Enjoy!

Co-hosts Caitlin White and Eric Fulcher's fifth episode of State Of Grace is punctuated by a special guest — Harry Styles expert, Zan Romanoff. The final episode of 2019 centers around Harry Styles' second solo album Fine Line. Coming in at the tail end of the year, his new record functions both as the legacy album Harry needed, and another entry into his endless play with the tenets of sexuality. That conversation is almost more interesting than discussion of the pop influence on singles like "Watermelon Sugar," and "Adore You." Whether you loved his self-titled or hated it, there's something in this wide-ranging conversation for everyone.

Nicola is one of the most sought-after violinists of her generation. She is one of the most influential classical artists in the world and has played with the finest orchestras and symphonies from around the globe. She was the BBC Young Musician of the Year at age 16, twice the Female Artist of the Year at the classical BRIT awards and has sold millions of records. Some interesting insights from this episode: As early as the age of 5, she was so emotionally moved by music that she would often be brought to tears while playing. It's important to focus early on in life. Once you learn to push through certain barriers, you can apply that discipline to other areas in which you choose to devote your life. She never had any long term goals of becoming a world class violinist but rather, was always hyper focused on just improving one day at a time. Beyond her technical mastery, she had a natural stage presence which enabled her to take her talent to the next level. When she performs she enters the “flow state” whereby she becomes so engrossed in playing that she's no longer thinking but rather, enters a period of emotional timelessness. Learn how she was able to top not only the classical charts but the Top 30 Pop Album charts as well. Excellence isn't just about the discipline, dedication and relentless work ethic but also about being immensely curious about the larger philosophical questions outside of their areas of expertise.

This week Kevin Kim spills on how a K-pop album is made. It starts with thinking about what song they want. They have huge meetings with producers and staff where they think about the concept and music genre. They listen to a bunch of demo songs and decide which one they want to use. Sometimes, after the pre-recording, it won't sound right so they'll change their mind on the song. It can sound really different after the recording.Once they decide on the songs they want to promote, they choose a concept and try on a lot of clothes. The stylist brings out all different outfits for them to try; sometimes they pick and choose, and other times the stylist will show them photos of what's on trend. Once they've chosen clothes they go straight to a photoshoot for the album. Then the members write thank you notes, and sign them, to put in the special albums. Kevin thinks he's signed more than 50-100 thousand times.

He is currently the music director for Idina Menzel. His playing can be heard on film scores, television shows and commercials. He has been featured in a wide range of musical contexts from symphony orchestras to David Letterman's band. His songs have been recorded by Michael Franks, Phyllis Hyman, Vanessa Williams and The Four Tops, among others, and for his own solo CD. He owns Secret Road Studios, a versatile production environment, where he plays, writes, arranges and produces. The music from this podcast is all from Clifford's album Walkin' Into the Sun. It's available here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/cliffordcarter His full-time professional career began at that time as he worked playing Miami clubs with local and national artists, among them Bobby Vinton, the Coasters and Motown's legendary Four Tops. An offer to tour with The Four Tops took him on the road for the first time. He spent a year with the Tops and recorded three albums with them. With friends Steve Jordan, Hiram Bullock and Will Lee, Carter formed the 24th Street Band in 1978. He was one of the principal songwriters in the band, which made three records, played regularly in New York City clubs and embarked on a successful series of tours in Japan. In 1990, Carter began a long association with singer/songwriter James Taylor as a member of his touring and recording band. Carter's long-time friend and colleague Don Grolnick was keyboardist and musical director for the band at the time, and after playing a supportive role to Grolnick as the second keyboardist, Carter became the sole keyboardist when Grolnick tragically passed away in 1996. He remained in the band through 2001, playing acoustic piano and electronic keyboards. He worked on numerous Taylor releases, including the 1997 Grammy-award-winning Pop Album of the Year, Hourglass. Carter recorded Walkin' Into the Sun, his only solo recording to date, which was released in 1993 and described as "one of the most engaging surprises of the year" by Jazziz Magazine and "a showcase for the keyboardist's excellent musicianship" by Jazz Times. The CD, a jazz/pop hybrid, features Carter's vocal and instrumental songs with a top supporting cast of musicians including Steve Rodby, Will Lee, Mark Egan, Bob Sheppard, Luis Conte and producer-guitarist Tim Weston. A favorite of Late Night with David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer, he has often sat in with the band to accompany the show's guest artists, and he's subbed for Shaffer as well. He has accompanied a variety of artists on television programs ranging from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Saturday Night Live, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, Regis and Kathy Lee, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The View to Rosie O'Donnell's 1999 Christmas special and VH1's Storytellers and Live By Request. Among these artists are Al Green, Jewel, Christina Aguilera, the Black Crowes, Smokey Robinson, the B-52's, Rufus Wainwright, the Temptations, Little Richard, BB King, Lyle Lovett, Cher, LeAnn Rimes, Vanessa Williams, Michael McDonald and many others. Carter has played at star-studded music events such as the 1985 reopening of the Apollo Theater ("Motown at the Apollo"), tributes to artists including Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Chuck Berry at the Kennedy Center Honors, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Sting's Rainforest Benefit in New York City, and Oprah Winfrey's "A Bridge To Now" celebration honoring 25 legendary African-American women, the concert for the 1st Annual Gershwin Prize for Popular Song honoring Paul Simon, and Fashion Rocks at Radio City Music Hall. His keyboard work has contributed to numerous film scores including You've Got Mail, A Chorus Line, The Object of My Affection, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and the recent remake of Shaft. In 2006, Carter began working with legendary singer Art Garfunkel, and continues to perform regularly with him both at home and abroad. 2009 highlights include appearing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cleveland with Little Anthony and the Imperials and Bobby Womack, touring the United States with Art Garfunkel, concerts with Betty Buckley, performances of "Too Hot to Handel" with The Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and recording a soon to be released CD with leader/drummer Chris Parker. Carter continues to participate in a variety of musical settings from clubs to concert halls around the world, to television appearances and recording sessions. All these of course are his hobby - his main job is to raise his three daughters with occasional time out to watch the river flow. There were atrocious sound problems with this show, and much of it had to be completely reconstructed from the library. The only unaffected parts were the mic sets, and I found those especially obnoxious after the fact (they haven't aged well either). Apologies to any Kevin Ayers fans for marring a tribute to the man with my amateurism. One note: the Broadcast track was meant to evoke "Rheinhardt & Geraldine." Maybe I should have actually played that at some point. Download | Podcast Bold text indicates relatively new releases (including reissues and comps). Not many opera stars can do "crossover," but the great Stephanie Blythe's new album entitled, "As Long as there are songs" shows us how a great opera star can sing pop music so beautifully, I include "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and "The Man that got away" and I know you will enjoy Mme.Blythe's remarkable endeavor.
