Historian Charles H. Kahn wrote that Pythagorean contributions to Western thought were "on the one hand, a mathematical understanding of the world of nature; and, on the other hand, a conception of human destiny that points beyond the visible world and beyond the mortal body to a higher form of life." Unfortunately, for the following 2,500 years, we took the first part: logic and reason, and largely discarded the other: intuition and imagination. Or, as Nietzsche put it in The Birth of Tragedy, we chose to rely heavily on our Apollonian side (yang) while neglecting our Dionysian side (yin).  And here we are, in a world of contradictions which are becoming ever more acute with the astounding recent advancements of Artificial Intelligence, which is of course based on numbers (in fact, it was Pythagoras who said, "everything known is a number").  How do we go back to the Pythagorean tradition? How do we restore balance between Apollo and Dionysus?  On this special evening, we will attempt to do just that. We will start with a talk by Edward Frenkel, mathematician, Berkeley professor, and author of Love and Math (currently out in 20 languages) who considers himself a Pythagorean. He will provide the context and the background. His talk will be followed by a ceremony, administered not by a priest or shaman but, as is more common these days, by DJs.  During the dance party following Edward Frenkel's talk, DJ Wilder (Anna Fedorova) will dazzle us with music sourced from different genres and epochs, followed by Edward Frenkel himself (as DJ Moonstein) playing back-to-back with Cihat Fitzgerald (DJ Chi) taking us further into the unknown. In dieser Episode bespreche ich das Buch "OMG, diese Aisling. Back to the Roots" von Sarah Breen und Emer McLysaght. Ich beginne mit einem Überblick über die Handlung: Aisling, die Protagonistin, sieht sich plötzlich mit mehreren schwierigen Wendungen konfrontiert. Ihr Leben, das zuvor stabil war – mit einem Job, einer Wohnung und einer festen Beziehung – gerät aus den Fugen. Die Hochzeit ihrer Mitbewohnerin Elaine zwingt sie, eine neue Wohnung zu suchen, während sie gleichzeitig ihren Job verliert und ihre Beziehung zu John zunehmend fad erscheint. Um wieder Kontrolle über ihr Leben zu gewinnen, zieht Aisling zurück nach Ballygobbard und plant die Eröffnung eines Brunch-Cafés. Das Buch verfolgt ihren Veränderungsprozess in einem ländlichen Umfeld und die Herausforderungen, die damit einhergehen. Besonders spannend wird es, als Aisling zusammen mit ihren Freunden eine Reise nach Las Vegas unternimmt. Die Erlebnisse dort bringen überraschende Wendungen in die Handlung und sorgen für viele humorvolle Momente. Ich teile meine persönlichen Eindrücke und wie ich mich mit Aisling identifizieren kann, da ich sie bereits aus dem ersten Band "OMG, diese Aisling" kenne und vor einigen Jahren die Autorinnen auf der Buchmesse interviewen durfte. Die Charaktere, die Aisling auf ihrer Reise begegnen, sind ebenso wichtig. Von der quirligen Sharon, die einen Schönheitssalon eröffnen möchte, bis hin zur talentierten Köchin Carol, die Aisling beim Brunch-Café unterstützt – sie alle tragen zur Dynamik der Geschichte bei. Ich diskutiere, wie das Buch anfangs etwas schleppend wirkt, sich aber mit der Zeit zu einem echten Page-Turner entwickelt. Während die Komik anfangs nicht sofort zündet, werden die Situationen und Wendungen mit fortschreitender Handlung spannender und unterhaltsamer. In meinem Fazit reflektiere ich, dass ich mir anfangs etwas mehr von der Situationskomik erhofft hatte, dennoch blieb ich am Ball und wurde von den Ereignissen in Ballygobbard gefesselt. Es ist ein wunderbar unterhaltsames Buch, das mich dazu anregt, mir vorzustellen, wie es wäre, Zeit in einem kleinen Dorf wie Ballygobbard zu verbringen oder einfach nur die Alltagsszenen zu beobachten. Ich schließe mit der Empfehlung, dass "OMG, diese Aisling. Back to the Roots" von Sarah Breen und Emer McLysaght, das im DTV Verlag erschienen ist, eine spannende und erheiternde Lektüre ist.

  At the beginning of September when I posted my "Sequencer City" mix, I said I'd been on a berlin school bender. Well, now three months later I'm still on that sequencer synth kick. At the end of October the analog synth itch was scratched by a stellar guest mix from Erwin Broers called "Capturing The Voice Of A Galaxy." It featured tracks from the Klaus Schulz label, "Innovative Communications. Now we have have a follow up mix from Erwin called "Back to the Roots of Berlin School." Oh man, this is some good stuff! Erwin tells me that "there's a whole sub-category of "Berlin School" out there called "Retro Berlin School". In the mid 1990's "Berlin School" was revived by nostalgic electronic artists who benefited from technological innovations to make the iconic analog synths such as the Mellotron, the ARP 2600 and the big Moog Modular more playable. The result was a huge resurgence of mid 1970's style Berlin School EM which was dubbed "retro" to mark the difference with the classics such as Tangerine Dream's Stratosfear, Klaus Schulze's Timewind and Ashra's New Age Of Earth." I hope my current obsession with this genre continues because I am loving every minute of it. Thanks for another great mix, Erwin.
