Send us a textService work in AA recovery isn't about giving back - it's about belonging, commitment, and staying sober. "I don't even drink coffee.""That's fine. You haven't been nominated to drink coffee. You've been nominated to make coffee."Steve heard this exchange at his Thursday night men's meeting, and it might be the greatest line about service work ever spoken. Because that's exactly what service work is - doing something that isn't about you, that gets you connected, that gets you showing up.In this episode, Matt and Steve dig into service work in recovery - what it is, why people are afraid of it, and why it might be one of the most important parts of staying sober that nobody talks about enough.Matt opens up about his early motivation for service work, and it wasn't the noble "giving back" thing everyone talks about. It was simpler: "I wanted to feel like I belonged." He shares the story of being a door greeter at the Tuesday night Forbes Street meeting - scared out of his mind, showing up 30 minutes early every week, hugging everyone who walked in. By the end of 5 weeks, he knew everyone in that room. That's the power of service work.Steve talks about his journey from cleaning ashtrays and taking out trash at his Friday night men's meeting to doing district-level work 15+ years later. But here's what he says: "The most rewarding service work is still at the meeting level - because that's where you meet the new alcoholic, the fresh alcoholic who just came out of rehab or is just looking for a meeting."We break down what service work actually looks like:The basics: Putting away chairs, breaking down tables, making coffeeThe commitments: Chairing meetings, being treasurer, being secretaryThe next level: GSR (General Service Representative), district workThe often-overlooked one: Driving people to meetingsMatt shares the "dirty little secret" about service work: it gets you to go to meetings. When you have a commitment - coffee maker, chairperson, door greeter - you show up. You don't bail because you don't feel like it. You're expected to be there, so you go. And that commitment to the meeting becomes a commitment to your sobriety.Steve talks about why he keeps taking service commitments even after 15+ years: "It makes me part of that meeting so much more quickly. This Wednesday noon meeting, I've only been going for about a year and a half, and there are people who've been there for 20 years. But taking the coffee commitment puts me in as part of that group way faster than if I just show up and never do anything."We also tackle the fears people have about service work:"I'm too new" (Matt's fear early on)"I'll do it wrong" (Matt's coffee-making anxiety)"People will judge me"The truth: The stakes are incredibly low. You can't really screw this up.Plus: The story of Ted S. filling the entire percolator basket with coffee grounds because he'd never made coffee before (that's one STRONG cup), why the phone weighs 500 pounds but picking someone up for a meeting is huge service work, and Matt's realization that he never volunteered for coffee at the Monday meeting because he doesn't drink coffee there (problem solved - he's volunteering now).If you're new to recovery and wondering if you should takeSupport the show

“'To hell with the handkerchief,' said Walter Mitty scornfully. He took one last drag on his cigarette and snapped it away. Then, with that faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful, Walter Mitty the Undefeated, inscrutable to the last."The Secret Life of Walter MittyBy James Thurber1939Born and raised in the tucked-away Mountain Park Plaza where Lake Oswego meets deep SW Portland (11830 Kerr Pkwy, 97035), Walter Mitty's Restaurant & Bar has provided a languid home for drinking day dreamers since 1982. And much like the ineffectual protagonist of the classic short story (that very loosely inspired the original bar founders) -- a man who would rather be the hero of his own fantasy world than deal with an increasingly unsatisfying reality -- your three podcast heroes, Alfredo, Nathan, and Producer Bill, mounted their bar stools for another world-saving episode of History by the Glass. Nominated three straight years for our Audience Choice Episode tourney by determined fan of the bar and pod (Robyn V), Walter Mitty's is what it is without trying too hard to be anything it's not. It's uncool. It's unironic. Despite the name, it's not an homage to much of anything. Which of course, makes it absolutely perfect in all its '80s oak and glass and green carpeted glory. Ben and Rob dive into Sinners, the intense, genre-blurring drama that's become one of the most talked about films of the year and, remarkably, the most Oscar-nominated movie in history.Often mistaken for a vampire story but driven more by themes of guilt, faith, and morality than horror, Sinners uses its haunting atmosphere and tightly unified style to tell a story that feels uncannily contemporary, even though it isn't set in the present. With every department working in striking harmony, the film's look, sound, and performances create a singular, deliberate vision. But what is Sinners, really? a prestige drama, a modern allegory, or something else entirely? Does it truly deserve its record-breaking recognition? And what does its success say about the kinds of stories the Academy wants to celebrate?Ben and Rob unpack what works, what doesn't, and what it all adds up to in one of the year's most debated films. Please support out dear friends, The Boardroom Gaming Cafe here: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/qr/Onvr5Gjn?utm_campaign=sharemodal&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=shortlink

Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. We update that last week's main movie, "Holding Liat," is now playing in 20 locations throughout North America. Then we hear a "Jangle" about unabashed Zionist Michael Rapaport, who was just in the news for his participation in "The Traitors." The first "Schmoovie" of the week is "It Was Just an Accident" by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. Nominated for two Academy Awards, it is playing internationally at major arthouse theaters. The premise is roughly based on Panahi's stints in Iranian prisons for his films exposing the oppressive regime. It includes a ragtag group trying to assess if a kidnapped man is indeed their interrogator/torturer. Though the set-up sounds grim, there is plenty of Panahi's trademark wit to keep you thinking -- and chuckling. The second film discussed is 2015's "Taxi," which was produced during a period in which Panahi was barred from creating films. Smuggled out and screened at the Cannes film festival, the movie takes place in a borrowed taxi and includes an uncredited cast of everyday Iranians -- or are they? Check out the two "not bad" films (our highest mark) in this week's The Reel Schmooze. The Reel Schmooze is produced by Ari Schlacht and can be found wherever you get your podcasts.
