He has recently been awarded a Churchill Fellowship to undertake research on Retrofit Economics across Europe. Dr Ruth Lang is an architect, curator, and Associate Professor leading the Masters programme at the London School of Architecture. Through her teaching, research and writing, her work explores how contemporary architectural practice can be restructured to more equitably address issues of diversity and the Climate Emergency, using collaborative and transdisciplinary strategies. Her book ‘Building for Change: The Architecture of Creative Reuse was published by gestalten in 2022.Natcha Ruamsanitwong is a historian of architecture in twentieth-century Britain. She is currently convenor of the SAHGB Women Architectural Historians' Network and a Trustee of the Construction History Society. She is the author of Leslie Martin and Sadie Speight: Architects of Modern Britain (Lund Humphries, 2026).Flora Samuel is the Professor of Architecture (1970) and Head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge. She was formerly Head at the Sheffield School of Architecture.  Her research currently focuses on rural placemaking, inclusive design and housing but she began her career writing about Le Corbusier and the nature of architectural practice. She currently leads Public Map, a major AHRC funded project based in Wales.Patrick Zamarian is a senior lecturer in architectural design and humanities at the University of Liverpool. His research centres on the role of educational and professional institutions in the history of architecture, specifically in the British Empire. He is the author of The Architectural Association in the Postwar Years (Lund Humphries, 2020) and has published on student networks in interwar Britain, on the role of the Building Research Station in the postwar period, and on architectural education in British India, among other things.

We are then joined by Mike Althorpe, Andrea Jung, David Knight and Holly Lewis, a group of practitioners and researchers working across architecture and local government, to explore the contemporary relationship between architecture and the public sector.ContributorsJohn Gold is Honorary Senior Research Fellow at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, Professor Emeritus at Oxford Brookes University, and former Special Appointed Professor at Meiji University in Tokyo. A historical geographer with a focus on cities, he has published more than 200 works on architectural modernism, Olympic cities and urban history, and is currently completing The Legacy of Modernism, the final volume in his trilogy on the Modern Movement.Mike Althorpe is an urban historian, researcher and storyteller. He co-authored Revolutionary Low Rise (2019) and Dual Cities – Social Housing in London + New York (2025). Formerly Public Programmes Lead at the RIBA, he curated exhibitions including A Place to Call Home and Social Housing, and now works independently as The London Ambler.Andrea Jung is an architect with experience across both private practice and local government. After leading commercial projects at KPF and co-founding TURN Architects, she joined the public sector through the Public Practice Associate Programme. She is now Technical Design Manager in Islington Council's New Homes team.David Knight is a designer, strategist, author and director of DK-CM. He has led urban strategies for projects across the UK, holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art, teaches at the London School of Architecture, and edited Public House: A Cultural and Social History of the London Pub, an Financial Times Book of the Year.Holly Lewis co-founded We Made That in 2006 and has led a wide range of urban regeneration and placemaking projects. She champions community involvement in design, equitable city-making and women in the built environment. Kai kurie vaikų dienos centrų atstovai atvirai sako – be projektų jie nebeišgyventų.Daugiau nei 80 procentų centrų dirba su vaikais iš sudėtingų šeimų. Tai vaikai su specialiais ugdymosi poreikiais, elgesio ir emociniais sunkumais, dažnai augantys krizinėse šeimose. Tačiau juos prižiūri vos vienas ar du darbuotojai, kurie tuo pačiu atlieka dar ir vadovo, finansinės paramos projektų rašytojo, buhalterio, mokytojo, virėjo ir visas, kokių tik reikia, funkcijas. Daugelyje centrų nėra nei psichologo, nei logopedo, nei specialiojo pedagogo. The Palace of Westminster is one of the world's most recognisable historic buildings and the home of the UK parliament. Yet much of the estate is in urgent need of repair. While debates over how to approach the Restoration and Renewal programme have continued for over a decade, other countries have already moved ahead: Austria has completed the renovation of its parliament, and Canada's is well underway. In February, the Restoration and Renewal Client Board set out updated costings and recommended two possible paths forward – full decant or enhanced maintenance and improvement. Parliament is expected to debate the Client Board's report in the coming weeks. With the stage now set for parliament to embark on a project that will not only safeguard this historic landmark but also reimagine it for future generations, this IfG event explored lessons from other international projects, and discuss what the Restoration and Renewal programme could mean for parliament, industry and the wider public. To discuss all this and more, the IfG brought together an expert panel, including: Jennifer Garrett, Assistant Deputy Minister of the Parliamentary Precinct Branch of the Government of Canada (joining remotely) Dr Alexandra Meakin, Lecturer in British Politics at the University of Leeds Jack Pringle, Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Nick Smith MP, Chair of the House of Commons Administration Committee The event was chaired by Dr Rebecca McKee, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Government. The discussion emphasizes that psychosocial issues profoundly impact both quality of life and cancer-related outcomes, making their assessment an integral part of care, not merely ancillary. The distress thermometer was developed by the NCCN in the late 1990s as a 0-to-10 scale, dubbed the "fifth vital sign". The term "distress" was chosen over psychiatric labels to capture the wide array of patient concerns, including pain, fatigue, sleep, spiritual, practical, and family issues. Distress screening is now mandated at regular appointments in all cancer centers in the US. Clinicians are encouraged to screen for more specific issues like depression (linked to poor adherence and survival), anxiety (which can impede treatment adherence), and substance use. Oncologists are the doctors most able to consider a patient's totality of symptoms, and their role is integral to supporting psychosocial referrals. To address the practical delivery of care, the collaborative care model is being advocated as a public health, population-based approach. Key components include: Use of a standardized screening tool. Management by a dedicated care manager. Weekly consultation between the care manager and a consultant psychiatrist for triage and treatment advice. The model allows oncologists to bill for care and learn more about these issues while ensuring patients receive evidence-based treatments. The clinicians concluded that fundamentally, mental health needs to be aligned alongside cancer care. McFarland is the director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Wilmot Cancer Center and a medical oncologist who specializes in head, neck, and lung cancer, in addition to being the psycho-oncology editorial advisory board member for the journal ONCOLOGY. Riba is director of the PsychOncology Program, a clinical professor, and the associate chair for Integrated Medical and Psychiatric Services in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, and psycho-oncology editorial advisory board member for the journal ONCOLOGY.
