(S18) The Thaqeef began negotiations with our Messenger ﷺ. They asked if they could be excused from Fardh prayers, as they found it demeaning. Our Messenger ﷺ replied: “There is no goodness in Islam without Salah”. Our Messenger ﷺ: “Embrace Islam, even if you have doubts”. A common misconception is that one must be perfect before embracing Islam. This is opposite to the truth. The Thaqeef asked if they could be excused from Zakat and Jihad, which The Messenger ﷺ said is fine. They requested to be able to still do Zina, Riba and Khamar. Our Messenger ﷺ recited the respective verses prohibiting these things. The delegation were worried that their people back in Ta'if could never handle these conditions. A wise man amongst them said: “Men with him [i.e with The Messenger ﷺ] used to do all these things, now they have quit, so can we”. The only completely non-negotiable thing is Shirk.
(S19) The Thaqeef began negotiating about their Idol, Arrabbah. They asked The Messenger ﷺ if they could keep it for 3 years, The Messenger ﷺ said no. 2 years, 1 year, 1 month? All these were declined. They said we cannot destroy it ourselves, so The Messenger ﷺ said someone will be sent to deal with it. The Thaqeef delegation asked if they could go back to their people first, as to inform them of the situation. When they returned to their people, they put on an act, claiming: “This man [i.e ﷺ] is the most harsh, and he rules by the sword! He has prohibited Khamr, Zina and Riba and our idol!” The Thaqeef people were completely against this, and said to prepare for war. Some time passed and they calmed down, they then said: “Accept whatever he ﷺ says, we will follow him”. The delegation then dropped their act and said: “We have already done so. He ﷺ is not harsh nor does he lead by the sword. He is the softest and humblest of creation. We said the contrary first to rid you of your pride”. The entire tribe (رضي الله عنهم) then embraced Islam. The youngest among the delegation, Uthman Ibn Abu Al-Aas رضي الله عنه was made the Ameer of his people. Why? - For Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه said: “He is the one most eager to learn the religion and the Qur'an”. He spent a few days with The Messenger ﷺ and was learning the religion. Thus, wisdom is not linked to age nor experience, rather it is from Allah SWT.

This week's HortWeek Podcast guest, TV presenter and garden designer Mark Lane, started gardening young although he initially studied art history and worked in publishing for RIBA and Thames & Hudson. After a car crash in 2000, a horticultural therapist and his husband suggested a new horticulture career as a designer and in the media. His new book, The Future of Gardens, published this May, is part of a series of imaginative future visions on a wide range of subjects, written by experts, academics, journalists and leading pop-culture figures. For his installment, Mark takes a "positive look at gardening with regards to the future of gardens. And of course, it has to cover everything from the climate crisis to being, you know, an adaptable and resilient gardener. He sees AI as limited to "being a great assistant. I don't think it will take over with regards to gardening or garden design" but with great potential to help with plant selection and speed up processes. With an eye on climate resilience, Mark has been exploring and implementing xeriscaping concepts into his garden:"By having a mixture and increasing that biodiversity of plants you're...more likely to have a garden that's going to flourish because while some will do well when it's really hot, others will do better when it's a bit wetter and a bit warmer."His book considers permaculture, regenerative agriculture and biophilia in the context of a broad definition of "Horticulture with a capital 'H'" that includes "floristry, agriculture, the perfume industry, anything you could possibly think of when it comes to plants." He reveals how apps and a drone means he is "able to go around areas in gardens, especially large gardens where I can't get my wheelchair, so I can still have my eyes and I can still go and see those places. So it's about again using this sort of future tech, which a lot of it is already here."Mark and Matt discuss the ultimate in futuristic horticulture, growing in space, which Mark says, is not just a matter of overcoming a technical challenge and the benefits of eating fresh produce:"[Astronauts are] going to be away for a long period of time and being able to undertake a task such as gardening reconnects them to Earth. So it actually reconnects them back to where they came from and that's really going to be very important for their for their mindset more than anything else.As a wheelchair user, Mark shares his perspective on how landowners can and should make access to parks, gardens and the countryside easier for all:He adds: " I do strongly believe that it doesn't matter whether you have a physical impairment or not, you can enjoy gardening. And you just have to really think a little bit outside the box. You have to be very, very honest with yourself and sort of assess yourself and see what it is that you can and you cannot do...and then try and adapt your gardening because of that."And as an owner of dogs, Mark gives us his take on the controversial topic of dogs, gardens and garden centres. Finally he gives an update on his plans with his ongoing presence on Morning Live keeping him busy, appearances at flower shows such as RHS Hampton Court Flower Festival, another book due "on cost-wise gardening" to come out in May 2026, as well as his garden design practice."I'm still designing the gardens, but I'm now having to limit the number of gardens that I do...here I used to do on average between 8 or 10 projects a year, I now do anywhere between 2 and 3, just because I just don't really have the time now, because I'm just constantly doing stuff." V vsakem primeru jo dobro soli in začini z mešanico peteršilja, česna, soli in olivnega olja.

The sustainable construction revolution continues to gather momentum, with mass timber leading the charge toward a greener built environment. Fresh research from Edinburgh Napier University confirms what many in the industry have long championed – mass timber buildings produce 50% less carbon emissions than conventional construction methods, easily exceeding RIBA's 2025 targets for whole-life carbon performance.Texas architecture firm Corrigan has stepped up with a game-changing sustainability calculator specifically designed for mass timber projects. This innovative tool helps architects accurately estimate biogenic carbon emissions, providing crucial data for environmentally conscious design decisions. Meanwhile, in Toronto, an ambitious new residential tower is set to demonstrate the remarkable efficiency of prefabricated timber construction. The 230 Royal York project will rise approximately 30 metres in a mere 90 days – a testament to how advanced timber engineering is transforming construction timelines. The creative potential of engineered timber continues to evolve in spectacular ways. We revisit the stunning Shigeru Ban-designed Swatch headquarters with its 4,600 unique glulam elements forming a sinuous, organic structure that defies conventional expectations of timber architecture. Equally impressive is the floating groin vault ceiling created by University of Bath researchers using just four large CLT panels – showcasing how mass timber can achieve complex architectural forms previously considered impossible with wood. Don't forget to check our LinkedIn feed for images of these remarkable projects and stay tuned for next week's announcement about the Build the Impossible Rothoblast competition for 2025!Send us a textSupport the show

This time around we're talking about the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS) with three of its architects: Jess Hrivnak (RIBA), Jane Anderson (ConstructionLCA), and Julie Jodefroy (CIBSE).The UKNZCBS is the first cross-industry standard for net zero carbon-aligned buildings, albeit in a pilot form. The standard has been developed to enable stakeholders to prove whether a building aligns with the UK's carbon and energy budgets by providing a single, agreed methodology for defining what ‘net zero carbon' means for buildings in the UK.This probably won't be the only episode we'll produce on the subject and we'll be watching its progress with great interest. Escuchar audio
(Conversation recorded on October 3rd, 2024) While humans, like all animals, are subject to certain fundamental realities, we also possess the unique ability to shape the world around us through physical infrastructure, laws and institutions, and our economic and social systems. And yet, it's important to remember that, as today's guest would say, what we design designs us back. In short, the systems and structures we build influence our cultures, values, and identities. Today, Nate is joined by architect and professor of planetary civics, Indy Johar, to explore the relationship between system design and human behavior - and what might be possible for transformational change. Along the way, they discuss the impact of sunk costs on our ability to change, the importance of new language to describe and respond to our human predicament, and envision future governance and economies that could enable the full spectrum of what it means to be human. What sorts of unconventional ideas, like self-owning land and technology, could lead to economies that are capable of sustaining humans as well as foster a healthy planet? How do our current societies prevent us from embodying and living into our greatest gifts as human beings? Is it possible to intentionally redesign our systems at the physical, structural, and psychological levels in service of all the entangled life inhabiting the Earth? About Indy Johar: Indy Johar is co-founder of Dark Matter Labs, as well as the RIBA award winning architecture and urban practice Architecture00. He is also a founding director of Open Systems Lab, seeded WikiHouse (open source housing), and Open Desk (open source furniture company). Indy is also a non-executive international Director of the BloxHub, which is the Nordic Hub for sustainable urbanization. He has taught & lectured at various institutions from the University of Bath, TU-Berlin; University College London, Princeton, Harvard, MIT and New School. He is currently a professor at RMIT University.
