Send us Fan MailContinuing the exploration of Vitruvius's Venustas, Firmitas, Utilitas, host Naziaty turns to Utilitas — usually translated as function or commodity — and asks what it really means in the 21st century. Drawing on a RIBA article, Accessible Architecture: How Today's Inclusive Spaces Can Help Solve 200 Years of Accessible Design Challenges, we trace the long, uneven history of disability in the built environment, from Victorian asylums and Gordon Cullen's 1931 awareness work, to Evans and Shalev's 1973 home for the physically disabled at 48 Boundary Road, to the pioneering Grove Road housing scheme by Wyvern Design Group, where disabled and non-disabled residents lived in fully integrated flats. We then pull the conversation into the present. The social model of disability has shifted the question from "what's wrong with the person" to "what's wrong with the environment," and the mantra nothing about us without us has reshaped how progressive architects work — bringing disabled users into the design process from day one. The Manchester's Hotel Brooklyn (Stevenson Studio with Squid and Motion Spot) is an example of how accessibility can be elegant rather than clinical, and looking back at an audit of an office building where the simplest oversight — access card readers mounted too high — was quietly disabling staff every day.The episode closes with an economic lens borrowed from Amartya Sen's capability approach: the gap between commodity(the thing you own) and functionality (what it actually lets you do). A standard bicycle, a standard doorway, a standard office card reader — none of these convert into equal functionality for everyone, and disabled people pay a steep "tax" of modifications, specialised tech, and extra effort just to reach the baseline others take for granted. Functionality, cannot be separated from comfort and dignity. To honour Utilitas in this century is to design for equity, not just access — and which is a conversation worth a deeper episode of its own.© 2026 Talk Architecture, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob.

The Palace of Westminster is one of the world's most recognisable historic buildings and the home of the UK parliament. Yet much of the estate is in urgent need of repair. While debates over how to approach the Restoration and Renewal programme have continued for over a decade, other countries have already moved ahead: Austria has completed the renovation of its parliament, and Canada's is well underway. In February, the Restoration and Renewal Client Board set out updated costings and recommended two possible paths forward – full decant or enhanced maintenance and improvement. Parliament is expected to debate the Client Board's report in the coming weeks. With the stage now set for parliament to embark on a project that will not only safeguard this historic landmark but also reimagine it for future generations, this IfG event explored lessons from other international projects, and discuss what the Restoration and Renewal programme could mean for parliament, industry and the wider public. To discuss all this and more, the IfG brought together an expert panel, including: Jennifer Garrett, Assistant Deputy Minister of the Parliamentary Precinct Branch of the Government of Canada (joining remotely) Dr Alexandra Meakin, Lecturer in British Politics at the University of Leeds Jack Pringle, Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Nick Smith MP, Chair of the House of Commons Administration Committee The event was chaired by Dr Rebecca McKee, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Government. We would like to thank RIBA for kindly supporting this event.

Nine out of ten architectural practices in Europe are involved in designing private housing, according to the Architects Council of Europe, with the work generating 54% of the average practice's turnover. But according to RIBA, in 2018 in the UK only 6% of housing was designed by architects. So housing is incredibly important to the economy of a profession which is very marginal to the production of housing in general. How did we get here?In this episode of the A is for Architecture Podcast I spoke to an architect and their client, or a client and their architect, about a project which perhaps illustrates another way of doing things. Working together, architect and Lecturer in Architecture Technology at Newcastle University, John Kinsley, and client (and Director at StorytellingPR) Miriam Attwood discuss their scheme for a collective custom build home in Leith, Scotland. It's a good story well told of another image of housing, one which adopts a typology, form, material and technology - and a process of design – design-as-relationship - which positions the house in service to the community it is for, and preferences home making above money makers. As the Bruderhof like to say, another life is possible.John can be found on John Kinsley Architects' website and on LinkedIn. Miriam can be found there too and at StorytellingPR.Music credits: Bruno Gillick Image credits: Main: Model of collective custom build, Leith © John Kinsley Architects. #ArchitecturePodcast #HousingDesign #CustomBuild #CollectiveHousing #waltersegal

This episode of the collaborative podcast between Oncology on the Go and the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS), hosted by Daniel C. McFarland, DO, features Michelle B. Riba, MD, and focuses on integrating psychosocial care into oncology for clinicians. The discussion emphasizes that psychosocial issues profoundly impact both quality of life and cancer-related outcomes, making their assessment an integral part of care, not merely ancillary. The distress thermometer was developed by the NCCN in the late 1990s as a 0-to-10 scale, dubbed the "fifth vital sign". The term "distress" was chosen over psychiatric labels to capture the wide array of patient concerns, including pain, fatigue, sleep, spiritual, practical, and family issues. Distress screening is now mandated at regular appointments in all cancer centers in the US. Clinicians are encouraged to screen for more specific issues like depression (linked to poor adherence and survival), anxiety (which can impede treatment adherence), and substance use. Oncologists are the doctors most able to consider a patient's totality of symptoms, and their role is integral to supporting psychosocial referrals. To address the practical delivery of care, the collaborative care model is being advocated as a public health, population-based approach. Key components include: Use of a standardized screening tool. Management by a dedicated care manager. Weekly consultation between the care manager and a consultant psychiatrist for triage and treatment advice. The model allows oncologists to bill for care and learn more about these issues while ensuring patients receive evidence-based treatments. The clinicians concluded that fundamentally, mental health needs to be aligned alongside cancer care. McFarland is the director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Wilmot Cancer Center and a medical oncologist who specializes in head, neck, and lung cancer, in addition to being the psycho-oncology editorial advisory board member for the journal ONCOLOGY. Riba is director of the PsychOncology Program, a clinical professor, and the associate chair for Integrated Medical and Psychiatric Services in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, and psycho-oncology editorial advisory board member for the journal ONCOLOGY.

In this episode of Judaism Demystified, Alan Niku—better known as The Dreamy Kalimi—shares what first pulled him into preserving and spotlighting Persian Jewish history through his Instagram and YouTube work. He gives a clear snapshot of what makes Iranian Jewry so distinct within the broader Jewish world. Alan highlights a core theme in his research: Persian Jewish heritage was never one-dimensional. It included rationalists, mystics, poets, philosophers, halakhists, and community leaders whose voices shaped their communities but were later forgotten or overlooked. He explains why that diversity faded from memory and what is lost when those voices disappear. The conversation then turns to two figures who capture this intellectual range—Rabbi Yehuda ben Elazar (the Riba) and Mollah Siman-Tov Melamed. Alan discusses why these hakhamim resonate with him and what their teachings reveal about the depth of Persian-Jewish thought. Before we wrap up, he gives us a look at the projects he's working on to revive, translate, and reintroduce these texts and ideas to a new generation. You don't want to miss this riveting discussion.---*This episode is dedicated to the refua shelema of Sarah Miriam bat Tamar, Binyamin ben Zilpa, and our dear friend Yaakov ben Haya Sarah Malakh---• Bio: Alan Niku is a filmmaker, writer, and scholar of Mizrahi culture from San Luis Obispo, California, based in Los Angeles. Born Muslim or a revert for years. Praying five times a day. Yet you still Google “is my prayer valid?” at every mistake in Salah. You trade daily but barely know the forms of Riba. You make business deals without learning the rulings of Buyu'. You'll debate world politics with confidence, but when it comes to Taharah or the fundamentals of the Deen? Silence. The scholars of Islam memorised on their deathbeds, still learning until their last breath. Meanwhile, you keep putting it off, living as if knowledge is for “later,” while every day takes you closer to meeting Allah. Allah raises the people of knowledge above all others. So what are you waiting for? In this reminder, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan unveils the one reason you were created, exposes why “ChatGPT fatwas” and shortcuts are ruining your Deen, and revives the tried and tested method of seeking Islamic knowledge that the Ummah has forgotten. Kaynak

Yohan Riba Martinez wasn't always leading consciousness research. He was a filmmaker for over 15 years before his girlfriend Dasha suddenly passed away in his arms. He heard her last breath, and he saw the light vanish in her eyes. That single moment drastically changed his perception of life and reality altogether, propelling him on a lifelong quest to uncover what lies beyond the veil of waking reality.Together, Yohan and Dasha shared a fascination for lucid dreaming and astral projection. What began as a playful curiosity now became a doorway into the deepest layers of the human mind. After her passing, Yohan left the film industry and became a Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and founded EVA Rising, a tech company focused on inducing lucid dreaming through wearable innovation. His research now bridges the worlds of neuroscience, imagination, dreams, and altered states of consciousness, exploring the mysterious thread that connects our waking imagination to lucid dreams, astral planes, and ultimately, self-realization.Today, Yohan's work is driven by one mission: to help others awaken to the infinite power of their minds. This powerful conversation educates and inspires.
