Joe is not drunk, but his creepy guitar-playing suggests it. Smith refers to this Vic Berger video about Ted Cruz, and this Vic Berger video about Jon Voight. Smith also talks about this part of a Vsauce video featuring the voice of presidential assassin JWB. Definitely JWB. Then there's this scene from Idiocracy (2006). There's also this short of Tyson walking away from an interview with his buns, plus MJ doing the first Man on the MW. Joe refers to this guitar for JP. There was no easily available YT video of an LDS hymn on a Chapman Stick, but there was a wonderful consolation prize: this. Joe refers back to this chart/scene from Idiocracy. Joe refers back to this other Radiohead song which was recorded while Thom sang his vocals in reverse or something. TBH, he mistook it for this one, which would also be super cool in reverse too. Joe talks about the music video for REM's Pop Song ‘89 which features people sans tops. Here's the B&B version. Find your own version, if ya nasty. Joe makes everyone take an axolotl break. Then Joe refers back to this episode of The Dollop about an early LDS branch. The guys love Pete Holmes and Joe tells Smith about the BCPE film. 'They don't make music like they used to'- you might say as you listen to the latest hits on the radio. Well, new research published in the journal Scientific Reports might prove you right. In the study, researchers analysed 1,131 melodies from 360 singles that reached the top 5 US Billboard charts each year between 1950 and 2022. They chose to study melodies because when asked to sing a popular song, most people would sing the melody rather than its bassline or drum pattern. They found that the complexity of song rhythms and pitch arrangements continued to decline over the decades. The big changes, which the researchers call ‘melodic revolutions' were in 1975, 1996 and 2000. In 1952, You Belong With Me was released by Jo Stafford and it contained a complex, rhythmic melody. While there is a beat in the background, Jo doesn't sing on beat and instead flows over the music with her voice. Moving to 1975, Love Will Keep Us Together was released by Captain & Tennille. Here, the singing is kept on beat and it's a much simpler song rhythmically. Then in 2009, we had Poker Face by Lady Gaga, where the same note is sung over and over again with a very simple melody. While the researchers found that melodic complexity decreased over time, they also found that the average number of notes played per second increased, mostly due to technological advances. In the 1950s, music production was limited to whatever physical instruments could be used in the song. However, today's digital music production software can create almost any sound imaginable. So while melodies are getting simpler, chords are getting more complex - meaning the overall complexity of modern songs are the same as the golden oldies, it's just the balance of melodies over production that has changed. Music Transcending the Moment - Damara Melissa Many times, song writers will create music that reflects a major incident that has impacted their life. The music allows them to communicate their feelings, their trials, their heartache and with Christian believers, often they will communicate their faith as well. Our guest today has had her music played on several Canadian Christian Radio stations; she has made it to the Joy Radio's Top 20 Christian music list and received a Covenant Award Nomination for “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” in 2022 and another nomination for “Pop Song of the Year” in 2023. Damara Melissa is a singer-songwriter from Ontario, Canada, whose music is driven by her Faith. Her soulful voice, mixed with her pop melodies and style, bring a unique vibe to the Contemporary Christian Music space. Damara has just released her a song that is her own version of “A Thousand Hallelujahs” that is just awesome… She also released here first short album, called “Beginnings,” which document her journey through some of the painful experiences she has gone through…and she is currently working on a second EP called, “The Space Between.” To discuss both of these releases, help me welcome to the program, Damara Melissa! Damara, thank you for taking the time to join us today… I do appreciate it! The first question I always start with is this… other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Damara Melissa?” You were born in the Caribbean…How old were you when you moved to Canada? Was the music in Canada was a bit different from Caribbean music that you were used to? You experienced a personal loss that led you to begin writing Christian music, correct? Who is this music being published through? How much does your Faith influence the music you now write? Tell us why you put your spin on “Thousand Halleluiahs…” Are you looking at going on tour or joining a group? What is your goal as a Christian music artist? What is the process you use to write your music? Do you just write down your thoughts and let the Holy Spirit guide you from there? Or is there a special process you use? What is the one take away you want the listeners of your music to have? Where can someone go to download or purchase your music? Damara, this is so interesting… if someone has a question or would like to reach out to you, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? I'll put links to all of this in the show notes below. Folks, music is the pathway to the soul. You can find out a lot about a person by listening to the music they enjoy. If you don't believe me – just do an observation around you as you go shopping or out and about next time. David became KING because He used music to worship the Lord. Amen! That is what brought him to a position of favor with King Saul and eventually, to become King and – through his lineage, we get to Jesus! Amen! And it all started with music! Praise God! I want to encourage you to make a purchase of Damara Mellissa's music and allow the Holy Spirit to minister to YOU through her music. Amen! Just drop down into the show notes and click the links right there to get in touch with Damara and to get her music loaded to you listening devices. Amen! Do it right now! Michael Kannisto runs a think tank called MindemicLab, which utilizes scenario planning, wargame simulation, and predictive modeling to help organizations develop strategies that will be effective across multiple possible futures. Michael began his career as a research chemist, but quickly realized that while molecules always act predictably and consistently, people rarely do. He has spent much of his career in corporate Human Resources exploring the uncertainty that comes along with having humans in the workplace. Large, successful, well-funded organizations frequently experience failure when purchasing technology or implementing new policies. This is mainly the result of unanticipated changes that occur along the way. Michael started MindemicLab as a resource to help others “rehearse” alternative futures, and thus increase their likelihood of success. Prior/ongoing work in this area includes deep dives into The Future of Work, The Future of Early Career Recruiting and The Future of Disability. I was perusing the internet the other day when I came across the music of Spanish pop sensation Niño Bravo and his song “Un Beso y Una Flor” and I absolutely loved his voice and the style of the song, that dramatic 1970's baroque pop sound. I of course looked him up and found out that one of his most famous songs, “Libre”, was played while political detainees and political prisoners in Chile were tortured by Pinochet's regime. I'll let that sink in for a moment. I was immediately horrified especially when I found out that the song was originally written against Franco's regime in Spain. So I realized that this song written against fascism was actually hijacked by it. It disturbed me, especially when I actually listened to the song, there was such a crazy contradiction there, this passionate song about freedom and the idea that people were tortured to the sound of it. That really messed with my head. Because I liked the sound of the song, yet I was revolted by the idea of it being used as a fascist anthem and the soundtrack of torture. Naturally this set up a wild contradiction inside of me. So naturally I wrote a story and now I'm reading it for you! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/anani-kaike/message
On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe listen to Plouffe's next pick, The Bicycle Thief's "You Come and Go Like a Pop Song". Released in 1999, it is the only album from the duo of Bob Forrest and Josh Klinghoffer, who are joined on this album by a myriad of other musicians. One of these musicians is John Frusciante, who in 1999, had returned to the Red Hot Chili Peppers as their guitarist, and who Josh Klinghoffer in turn replaced in 2009. The album comprises 13 tracks on both its 1999 original release and 2001 re-release, but with some omissions and additions, as well as a track re-ordering. Will the boys come and go from this album, or will the bicycle thief instead steal their hearts? Come along and find out!

Using pop music in your music classroom can be so much fun! Students love learning something they know or have heard before, playing music that they listen to at home, and performing songs for an audience who also knows the music. For the next several episodes I'll be sharing pop song arrangements that I've created and used with my students for xylophone ensembles, but before we get to the actual arrangements I thought I'd share some tips for how you can find and create pop song arrangements to use in your classroom. What to look for, how to determine if a song would be a good fit for an arrangement for xylophones, and things to think about as you arrange pieces. In the days of old, creating a song required a composer, a lyricist, an arranger, a recording engineer, a band or orchestra. Today, in the pop world, a single person often handles those jobs in a single studio. In this extraordinary episode, you'll hear two-time Grammy winner Oak Felder create a new song, in real time, start to finish—and you'll gain incredible insight into how technology and talent team up to produce art.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
On this week's episode of Formidable Opponents, we're covering an era that elevated pop to a whole new level. An era of excess. MTV, arcades, roller skating rinks, bowling alleys, movie theaters and more featured the omni-present soundtrack of all our favorite pop hits of the era. It's hard to believe how much time has passed since the end of a decade that continues to bring us so much pop culture nostalgia. The 80s will always live on, bring us joy and remind us of a time of big styles, big hair and of course, big music. So, welcome to our podcast, there's no turning back, don't moonwalk away, reach out to our collective pencil sketched hands and join us, as this week as Formidable Opponents debates and discusses, "Best 80s Pop Song." Bowen is a little sickstress this week, so he's invited Matt to his new home to record an episode of Las Cultch and contract whatever he has. Stanley cups in hand, the two discuss, well, pop cultural topics! "Such as?" you ask? Well, Chappell Roan and Troye Sivan's latest albums, RHONY, the "sweeps" TV culture of yesteryear, and an oversaturation of the espresso martini. Also, Bowen MET LADY GAGA, Matt has a haunted weekend in Long Island at the Chambers of Hell, and BOWEN MET LADY GAGA. All this, handwriting vs. typing, earnestness vs. earnesty, a live pop songwriting session, and the naming of the Actress of the Millenium. More like OCTOBER flush and OUR flannel cure (the flannel being this episode). Bye! You can gamble on horses or on the turn of a card - but Daniel Gould made a living betting on the outcome of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. Daniel made a profit because he studied the voting history of the competition, as well as the cultural and geo-political factors that predict which songs will triumph and which will score "nil point". In 2018, Daniel was so sure of his system of reducing the risk that he took out a loan on his home and bet it on Israel's song to win... only to see the entry from Cyrus suddenly rocketing up the leader board. Was Daniel about to lose everything? For a full list of sources used in this episode visit Tim Harford.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
