The Lineage of Immortals (Sanskrit Amaraugha) is the earliest account of a fourfold system of yoga in which a physical practice called Haṭha is taught as the means to a deep state of meditation known as Rājayoga. The Amaraugha was composed in Sanskrit during the twelfth century and attributed to the author Gorakṣanātha. The physical yoga practices have a pre-history in a tantric Buddhist milieu but were here adapted for a Śaiva audience. The treatise explains how Śaiva yogis move kuṇḍalinī, unite Śakti with Śiva, and achieve Rājayoga. Three hundred years later, the author of the Haṭhapradīpikā incorporated almost all the Amaraugha's verses on Haṭhayoga into his own work, which became a definitive exposition of physical yoga. The study of the Amaraugha reveals not only the genesis of Haṭha and Rājayoga but also the creation of the most influential model of Haṭhayoga in the early modern period.  The Amaraugha and Amaraughaprabodha of Goraksanatha (Institut Francais de Pondichery, 2024) presents the first critical edition and annotated translation of the Amaraugha, as well as a later recension, called the Amaraughaprabodha, with an introduction that explores the profound significance of both works for the history of yoga. Jason Birch was awarded his doctorate at the University of Oxford and is a Senior Research Fellow of the Light on Hatha project, hosted at SOAS University of London and the University of Marburg. Today , Athens-based storyteller Marsha takes us on a journey back to ancient Greek with her phenomenal Oracle of Delphi. Minimalistic, deep in its taste and mysteriously colorful: Marsha brings storytelling through music & magic. She believes that human beings need music, stories and magic in the same way that plants need sun and rain. It was her mix for Deep House Athens, which is run by Marsha by the way, that impressed us and since then we wanted her to mix a delicious Schirmchendrink. She definitely is an artist with a delicate taste, tremendous creativity and a unique sound who found her own place in the world of deep electronic music. In Athens, she is running her own music club project called 'Marsha Invites" and she is a DJ at Home 89.1 radio. She is a member of Playground Greece team, and, being a true Yoga lover, she co-founded the Music & Yoga Project, where she provides the electronic music soundtrack to professional yoga classes. For this exclusive Schirmchendrink episode and together with her bartender friend Goozy (https://www.instagram.com/goozy85), Marsha invented this cocktail “Oracle of Delphi” (picture credits go to https://www.instagram.com/_ambrosialis_). Here is the recipe: • Mastiha infused with butterfly pea tea • Oracle syrup • Plum bitters • Oleander leaves Delphi was an important ancient Greek religious sanctuary sacred to the god Apollo. Located on Mount Parnassus, the sanctuary was home to the famous oracle of Apollo, which gave cryptic predictions and guidance to both city-states and individuals. Thanks to Pythia’s prestige, Delphi became the richest and most famous Hellenic sanctuary. The Greeks called it the Omphalos, or “Navel, center of the world.” Pythia was the name of the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi who also served as the oracle, also known as the Oracle of Delphi. Pythia spoke on behalf of the Gods and delivered oracles. She was falling into a prophetic trance by using oleander as a complement during the oracular procedure, chewing its leaves and inhaling their smoke. We love creative minds, we love storytelling, and, we love Marsha! This one just has it all. Thank you for this fantastic sip and mesmerizing journey! Cheers! The bartenders Link up! This episode of The Yoga Inspiration Podcast is important for every yoga student, teacher, and yoga studio owner to hear. I’m very excited about the energy Davina Davidson brings with her to the yoga mat, and the perspective she shares with us today is something the yoga community needs to hear.  Davina is the founder of The Melanin Yoga Project in Houston, a project that focuses on creating a space where people of color can learn, ask questions about, and ultimately practice the benefits and teachings of yoga.  The reality is that there is not one singular black experience in the yoga community. There are unconscious biases built into the business standards of the yoga world that, quite frankly, do not create a safe space for POC yogis to learn or even teach their practice.  More than that, these biases greatly limit the opportunities yoga students and yoga teachers have to interact with diversity.  From Davina’s point of view - as a successful black woman and as a yoga teacher - it is the responsibility of the yoga teachers and the yoga studio owners to start these inclusive conversations. As leaders, we need to be open to receiving feedback and constructive criticism. It’s time to ask - what is your experience coming into the yoga space?  Davina and I discuss the different ways yoga teachers can engage with their POC yoga students and ask these kinds of questions. Not only to make sure that they and their yoga practice are doing well, but also to see where we, as teachers, can create more space and opportunities for them to get the most from our yoga community.  Doing this sometimes means having those difficult conversations. It’s not easy to look inward at yourself and start unpacking unconscious prejudice you didn’t realize you had. But if you can acknowledge the privileges you’ve been afforded, then you can recognize the areas where you can make a positive change.  We want to make a positive change on a bigger level. Davina says it’s time to move past our individual experiences and realize we, as a community, have a systemic issue with race and blackness in the yoga world. We can still embrace ahimsa while taking actions that benefit the POC yoga community, and Davina shares with us further steps we can take to acknowledge race and turn them into teachable moments, not only for ourselves but for our yoga students.  Check out some of the resources Davina recommends for self-study: 13TH Documentary on Netflix Braving the Wilderness by Brene Brown If you’re a practicing yoga student with an inspiring journey, I want to hear your story. Leslie Booker -- Cultivating Compassion: Lessons from the Front Lines of Criminal Justice

Awakin Call

“Caring for myself is not self indulgence.  It is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare” -- Audre Lorde These words open Leslie Booker‘s website. Known as “Booker”, she brings her heart, wisdom and compassion to the intersection of social justice, yoga and mindfulness.  She is passionate about expanding our vision around culturally responsive yoga and mindfulness teaching, and about changing the paradigm of self and community care. An activist who spent more than a decade on the front lines of the criminal justice system, Booker is a mindfulness/movement teacher, trainer, mentor, writer, and changemaker consultant. She inspires others on their journey to find a sense of freedom and liberation within a world that is burdened by greed, hatred and delusion. Booker teaches yoga and mindfulness. She began sharing her practice with teens incarcerated or involved in the court system and other vulnerable populations in 2005, after nearly a decade in the fashion industry.  She served as a senior teacher and Director of Teacher Trainings with Lineage Project from 2006-2016, where she worked with incarcerated and vulnerable youth.  During this time, she also facilitated a mindfulness and cognitive-based therapy intervention on Riker’s Island from 2009-2011, a partnership between New York University and the National Institute of Health. “I was really overwhelmed at the beginning, by the environment, by seeing so many of my little brothers and sisters locked up,” Booker admitted about first teaching 12-15 year old incarcerated youth. “It’s heartbreaking to see another generation of People of Color starting their lives behind bars and feeling stuck there, like it’s where they’re supposed to be. But I knew that it was something I needed to do. As Van Jones says, ‘We need to call them up, not call them out.’ I needed to go back and try again.” Booker found that to teach in that environment, she had to go deeper into her meditation practice.  “You’re seeing a lot of suffering through generations of historical trauma and the challenge is to not get caught up in that narrative, in the weight of it, but to face it head on, to empower them to move through it, not around it.” Soon after she began her practice, Booker went on a retreat to Uganda with the Venerable Bhante Buddharakkhita, a Ugandan Theravada Buddhist monk, and as she was leaving he said, “Your practice has to be your work, and your work has to be your practice, and there can be no separation.” At first Booker says she didn’t know how to integrate those, because she was an activist on the front lines, working in jails.  Now, in her teaching, Booker draws on another expression of Audre Lorde, that “the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.” Realizing that “these tools that we’ve been shown of fear and hatred and greed and delusion are not working," Booker says "I know I have to turn towards compassion, towards love. I have to turn towards hearing your story and seeing how we are more alike than separate. Because me living divisively from you isn’t healing this world that we’re living in.”  Throughout her career, Booker has contributed to the advancement of her field both in theory and practice. She is a a co-author of Best Practices for Yoga in a Criminal Justice Setting, a contributor to Georgetown Law’s Center on Poverty and Inequality’s report: Gender & Trauma—Somatic Interventions for Girls in Juvenile Justice, YOGA: The Secret of Life, and contributed to Sharon Salzberg’s book Happiness at Work. Booker is on faculty with the Engaged Mindfulness Institute, Off the Mat Into the World, Bending Towards Justice, the Yoga and Dharma Training at Spirit Rock, and sits on the Advisory Boards of The Art of Yoga Project and Lineage Project.  She is co-founder of the Yoga Service Council at Omega Institute and the Meditation Working Group of Occupy Wall Street. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising from Virginia Commonwealth University, and went on to train at Spirit Rock in their Mindful Yoga and Meditation training (2012), Community Dharma Leaders’ Training (2017), and will complete the Spirit Rock 4-year Residential Retreat Teacher Training in 2020. “All of my years of being out there on the front lines, working in jails,” Booker says, “at the end of the day it all comes down to love.  Not in that weak sentimental way, but in that way that is strong and powerful.” Join us in conversation with this compassionate teacher who deepened in the power of love after teaching on the front lines of a broken criminal justice system!  The remarkable sujatha baliga will be moderating the conversation.

In response, they founded the Youth Yoga Project to be a part of the solution that meets the emotional needs of all K-12 students. Their solution remains rooted in teaching, but now Julia and Lauren teach teachers how to implement their research-based mindfulness curriculum. Started by teachers for teachers, the Youth Yoga Project has trained 1700 educators and empowered 40,000 students with skills to calm their nervous systems and brains, allowing them to make responsible decisions.

This innovative approach shows teachers and students how to critically approach postural alignment, lending practical information that can be applied immediately to the mat. In addition to co-owning Yoga Project studios with her husband, Stacy also continues to educate others in mindfulness-based meditation, breath work, and self-inquiry through courses taught on edx.org. On this episode of the podcast, Stacy shares how she has developed a thriving yoga business, tips for leading successful retreats, the process of writing a book, as well as business lessons she's learned throughout her career.  Enjoy!
