This week on Flightless Bird David Farrier investigates whether we have America to thank for the modern laundromat. After all, there are over 30,000 laundromats in the US - employing 39,000 people, making $5 billion in revenue each year. To help him in his investigation David meets with Brain Wallace of the Coin Laundry Association to discuss how on April 18th,1934 a Texan named CA Tannahill opened the world's first coin-operated laundromat. David then discovers how laundromats mean different things to different people in America. He then talks with Jason Sowell, who is very enthusiastic about the importance of the American laundromat and runs a non-profit called “Current Initiatives” which helps people do their washing. David also learns why Americans have a phobia of clotheslines. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Continuing our short tour of guest speakers, we have Jason Sowell joining us. He's been a friend of our church since the beginning, and we are happy to have him join us to talk about the gospel of doing what you can.
We are so proud to present our very first guest speaker, Jason Sowell. You know him from the amazing work his non-profit, Current Initiatives, is doing all over America. He tackles love in this sermon.
Jason is the Founder of Current Initiatives, a Tampa based non-profit that annually runs Affordable Christmas, occasionally runs Hope for Homes projects, and regularly runs Laundry Project. The Laundry Project is the most regular program and has also drastically increased in frequency in response to Covid-19 needs. This episode digs mostly into that project and how they have been adapting to the current situation. Jason does a good job of fleshing out his conviction that how we do things matters just as much as what it is we do. There is a lot of good thinking behind Jason's work and I hope you find this conversation valuable. Enjoy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theworkethic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theworkethic/support
Jason Sowell, Vinny Tafuro, and I were invited to do a panel discussion with a Social Entrepreneurship class at UT. The panel had been on our calendars for some time but since the schools were closed and we were prevented from gathering in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak the panel moved online. This made it possible to open up the conversation to a few of Tammy Charles' other classes. The Zoom call ended up with students from her Management class as well as her Intro to Business Class and had students from both the University of Tampa as well as Hillsborough Community College. We had a great conversation and I wanted to share that with you here. enjoy --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theworkethic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theworkethic/support

On this episode, Chief Brian Dugan joins special guest Jason Sowell to talk about the impact a free laundry service initiative is making around the nation. Sowell founded the non-profit organization Current Initiatives, which operates the "Laundry Project." The organization is one of four groups that received a Community Investment Grant from the Tampa Police Department in 2018. The Laundry Project assists low-income families with meeting a basic need – washing clothes and linens, by turning laundromats into community centers of hope. Laundry fees are paid for while volunteers assist with laundry services, entertain children, and create a caring space at the laundromat.Chief Dugan shares his experience with the Laundry Project and how it brought Tampa Police officers and residents closer. The Tampa Police Department is accepting applications for the 2019 Community Investment Grant program from June 3-July 31. Laundry- I hate to do it. I will avoid it until I have to do it and then, I do it begrudgingly. But, what if I couldn't do it? What if I had to choose between clean clothes and food? How would that affect my life? In today's episode, Jason Sowell and I discuss those situations. He saw a need and just decided that he would do something about it. He didn't wait until the he had a plan or he had an organization. He just did it. AND after doing it for some time, he created the Laundry Project here in the Tampa Bay area. Now, it's in cities all across the US. AND that's not where he stopped. He also created the Hope for Homes Project and Affordable Christmas. Jason is one of the impact makers that I talk about and then some. Not only has he changed his local community and the lives of people in it, but also communities across the nation and countless other lives. I hope you listen to Jason's story and that it inspires you to do more. For more information on the The Small Magic Podcast or to submit a story, please go to our website here.
