Wilkes is an American musician, visual artist, author, filmmaker and self-proclaimed "southern surrealist". He is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (notably on harmonica and banjo), having recorded with such artists as Merle Haggard, John Carter Cash, Mike Patton, and Hank Williams III. Wilkes’ latest solo album is called "Cattle in the Cane." JD Wilkes is perhaps best known as the founder of the Legendary Shack Shakers, a Southern Gothic-rock / blues-band formed in the mid-90s.
Author Keven McQueen (The Kentucky Book of the Dead) and author-visual artist-musician JD Wilkes (The Vine That Ate The South) visited DCPL back in March for a conversation about their history, influences, and work. As a bonus, JD also plays some tunes. Thanks to the Gaslight Boys for opening up the event. Look 'em up on Spotify. PS: We had some recording issues. Blame the muffling and volume levels on yours truly. For that, to the listeners & guests, I do apologize. Intro music: "Wabash Blues" from JD & Charlie Stamper's great record, Cattle in the Cain.
The Big Damn Band is backstage in Kentucky and they are joined by their touring friend JD Wilkes! This episode may not be safe for work.
