The 19th century Swedish philosopher and poet Henri Frederic Amiel wrote one of the most eloquent observations about music, saying “Music is harmony, harmony is perfection, perfection is our dream, and our dream is heaven.” If Amiel is right, and I have a feeling he is, then pairing Andrea Zonn and John Cowan in a setting where they can sing some of their favorite songs both old and new, is bound to take you at least a good part of the way to heaven. With their debut collaboration, the album Andrea Zonn & John Cowan Are The HercuLeons, the Nashville legends make the harmony part sound effortless, and with a cast of all stars behind them, have set their sights skyward. John Cowan and Andrea Zonn already had a harmonious relationship and had worked together in the decades leading up to now, but it was a quirk of having some more studio time together during the pandemic that set the stage for their first full length collaboration as band leaders. Here, Andrea and John detail that story behind their collaboration, as well as stories of their heroes like Leon Russell and Bill Monroe, and contemporaries like Tom Britt, their perspective on their own musical legacies, tales of their time in the shangri-la of western North Carolina's musical past, Green Acres Music Hall, and more, including music excerpts of songs from their new album. The sisters are sooooooo excitedthat we got to talk to Bowen Young! We chatted with this divine duo about allthings music, like Brandon deciding to move to Nashville and “just give it awhirl,” and Clare's advice to “lean into the weird” because we're all uniqueand special. Nashville-based duo BOWEN * YOUNG embarks on a musical journey with their debut album, Us, a melodic tapestry woven by the harmonious souls of Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young. Produced by acclaimed Americana songwriter/producer Sean McConnell, their 10-track revelation is slated for a global release on May 3rd via Snakefarm/PIAS. Hailing from rural Australia, Clare, and Connecticut native Brandon infuse 'Us' with haunting, ethereal songs that delve into the depths of ferocious love, heartbreaking loss, and unwavering hope. Their musical collaboration, aptly named "Cinematic Americana," is a testament to the emotive songwriting, honest lyrics, and hypnotic harmonies that encapsulate their special bond. In the luminous shadow of their individual backgrounds, Clare, famed for her role as Scarlett O'Connor in 'Nashville,' and Brandon, a seasoned musician touring with legends like John Hiatt, share a common North Star—sweeping emotion, intimate moments, and bombastic sound. The couple's creative synergy found its missing piece in Sean McConnell. The revelation struck while composing 'Water To Wine,' a song that seamlessly captures the essence of their profound connection. Yet, life's shadows emerged in the form of 'Dangerous Love,' a single born from a harrowing experience when an assailant invaded their home. Undeterred, Clare and Brandon transformed adversity into art, choosing joy over fear. Entering the studio with McConnell and producer Roger Alan Nichols, they discovered the sweet spot of true emotion, using their crackling energy as the cornerstone. From the stripped-back 'Halo' to the unpolished honesty of 'To The Bone,' each track on 'Us' resonates with the authenticity of their musical journey. Clare's arrival in Music City in 2012 marked the beginning of a musical voyage with luminaries like Vince Gill and the Zac Brown Band. A pediatric cancer survivor, her life story adds a poignant layer to their narrative, emphasizing the resilience to embrace both light and dark. Brandon's journey, beginning in 2000, unfolds with nights spent filling composition books with melodies in Nashville. His collaborations with John Hiatt and contributions to projects such as 'Johnny Cash Forever Words' showcase the breadth of his musical prowess, heard in shows like 'Shameless'. Fate orchestrated their union in 2013, when Brandon became Clare's last-minute duet partner. Their unique chemistry blossomed into love, culminating in a magical proposal at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and a union officiated by John Carter Cash in 2017. The couple's musical saga continues to resonate globally such as sharing the stage with Billy Joel at BST/Hyde Park last year, a headlining US tour, and an astounding 838% growth on Spotify. The spotlight has embraced them, and the world eagerly awaits the May 3rd release of 'Us.' As the pages turn to 2024, the duo anticipates their return to the UK for the Highways Festival at The Royal Albert Hall on May 17th & 18th among other exciting opportunities. The symphony of BOWEN * YOUNG continues an enchanting tale of love, resilience, and a harmonious odyssey through the corridors of life and art. The contrast in energy of these two nights is stark, and part of the discussion. The mood the night of the show was appropriately laid back for San Francisco. The Carousel Ballroom, which would shortly become the Fillmore (West), hosted the April 24, 1968 concert, and tape was rolling, as was the case when Owlsley Stanley was at the sound board. He recorded most shows that he mixed, which gives purpose to his foundation's modern mission of preservation. This Carter-Cash album could do a lot of good in that area. Markus and Ray talk with William "Hawk" Semins and Pete Bell of The Owlsley Stanley Foundation, about this show, and their ongoing efforts to preserve this audio legacy! Then they're joined by John Carter Cash, legendary producer and artist, and son of John and June! He gives the family legacy's view of this show, among other things! Book by Robert Cary and Des McAnuff Music and Lyrics by Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash and others Directed by Des McAnuff Love is a burning thing Country music royalty Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash remain to this day one of the most famous couples of the 20th Century. Created with the support of the family and told through the eyes of their son John Carter Cash, this new musical covers it all: their childhoods, their 1956 meeting at the Grand Ole Opry, the storied on-stage proposal in 1968, and the soaring highs and whiplash lows of fame, life on the road, addiction, arrests, controversies, marriage, family and devotion. This is a whole-hearted and clear-eyed telling of one of the most iconic love stories in music history, complete with a soundtrack of beloved hits — I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, Hey Porter, Jackson, I've Been Everywhere and many more.

Defeating Adversity Through Writing Lori Keesey She's written for daily newspapers and trade publications and her freelance work has appeared in regional and trade magazines, specifically those specializing in space exploration. Yes, Lori was a space junkie, and worked for NASA in public outreach for nearly 20 years. She calls herself and “accidental entrepreneur” and started the “Accidental Blogger” to help build an author platform, where she shares stories of overcoming adversity. She knows a thing or two, unfortunately, about that subject, as she faced her own tragedy when she lost her 33 year old son. Lori Keesey considers herself among the lucky. Recently retired, Lori enjoyed a 40-plus-year career as a writer and now has time to pursue her childhood dream of writing fictional characters who make a difference. She is launching her first novel, “Always Think of Me” in April of 2024. I read you worked for nearly 20 years with NASA in public outreach. I've been an avid space nut since about the age of 3. One of my earliest memories is watching Scott Carpenter on the first American suborbital flight in 1962. In fact, I just returned from a trip to south Texas where I visited Stargate, where Elon Musk is launching his rockets. So I have to be careful and not let our conversation today start to take on a flight all its own… Let's start with what motivated you to begin the “Accidental Blogger.” Was it a way to deal with your son's death? How did your Faith help you deal with everything at that time? Does tragedy tend to challenge or change someone's belief in God? I read that you came to the realization that he belonged to God his whole life, and was just “on loan to you” until his mission was completed. How did you come to that realization? I read that you came to the realization that tragedy comes in different forms our entire life. Can you explain for us what you mean by that? You also said that you measure time differently now. You reference pre and post tragedy. Do you find others use the same time measure after their experiences? People react differently when they experience some sort of tragedy. Some are angry, others sad. Still some have regret. Are all of these just moving through the different stages of grief differently or are they truly dealing with it in different manners? You also interviewed John Carter Cash about dealing with his addiction and, I guess you could say, how it runs in the family. What was the one thing you took from that interview that still sticks in your mind today? Let's shift to a discussion about your book, “Always Think of Me.” Why did you write this book and why publish now? I know it's supposed to be published soon… April (2024), correct? This is a novel. Can you give us a brief synopsis of the book? I'm not going to ask “who” inspired this story – but does it have some reality included that affected you in some way? When will it be available for sale? I have one more question for you that came out of the research I was doing to get ready for our interview today… Can you share with us a little bit about an interview you did with a publicity shy multimillionaire who shared his reasoning for his relentless pursuit of wealth. What were the reasons he shared with you in that interview?...
Grammy winner John McEuen will release his new album, The Newsman, on April 12 on Compass Records. An unprecedented move for McEuen, the album is 10 spoken word tracks (and one instrumental), all mini-movies, with John's unique style of music behind each. From the opening title track, a true story about a man who sold newspapers and was a tremendous influence on the young musician in Los Angeles, to the final cut, “Julie's Theme,” inspired by Julies Verne telling a friend, in a French cemetery, about his recently deceased young wife, McEuen presents an album filled with stories that will inspire and perhaps bring a tear to your eye. The different tracks on the album range from “Killed at the Ford,” a Civil War-era poem that tells of the death of a young soldier as he and friends go to meet a picket-guard by a ford, not expecting trouble. A shot is fired from the woods, and the young man is dead. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow doesn't end the poem there, but relates how it affects the young man's family at home. “The Cremation of Sam McGee,” one of the most famous poems written by Robert Service, was published in 1907, told from the perspective of the man who cremates the prospector who died in the Yukon, while searching for gold. The Stephen Vincent Benét poem “The Mountain Whippoorwill” (published in 1925). “FlyTrouble” is a Hank Williams Sr. classic from 1949, and one of “talking blues”numbers that McEuen has recited many times over the past years.“OldRivers” was released by Walter Brennann1963, Thomas Monroe wrote “Nui Ba Den” while he was in Vietnam in 1968.More recent writings are “Pineapple John” by John Carter Cash, Hans Olson's“I'll Be Glad When I Run Out Of Gas” and Thaddeus Bryant's “Red Clay.” This album is a soundtrack for films not yet made.” McEuen says that watching the Tom Hanks film News of the World made him finish this album. “I feel like that character, having to read the news to people who have not yet heard it. And, my first ‘song', the title cut, was about that type of fellow, in a way, and his story had to be told.I find in this final year of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this album comes in a good space. That was a great 50-year run for me, and now that it has run its course, it's time for The Newsman. I look forward to going out and telling people about those 50 years that impacted so many, especially me, playing some new music, and throwing a few of these stories in along the way.” McEuen believes these spoken word offerings can fit on radio. “It is my suggestion to add one of these cuts in between other music you are playing, finding styles that fit each – as they are each different. Listening to from top to bottom is a lot to ask of anyone! I look forward to seeing what people program with various cuts.” #nittygrittydirtband #spokenword #newalbum #newmusic #stevemartin #music #poetry #poems #tommyleejones #sissyspacek

Episode # 196 Clare Bowen & Brandon Robert Young aka "Bowen Young" discuss their incredible music, upcoming tour! With haunting and ethereal songs that masterfully delve into the depths of ferocious love, heartbreaking loss and steadfast hope, the debut album, Dangerous Love, by new duo Bowen Young unveils a unique style of music the couple has dubbed “Cinematic Americana.” Bowen Young's timeless debut record created by Clare Bowen and husband Brandon Robert Young is a multi-sensory feast. The music, produced by Sean McConnell, invokes themes painted by the duo's powerfully authentic lyrics and hypnotic harmonies. Clare, the charismatic actress who played Scarlett O'Connor in the popular show Nashville, is known as a ray of sunshine around the world. She is an empath who leads with her heart, able to communicate and translate emotions whether on stage or screen. Born in rural Australia, she moved to Music City in 2012 for the Nashville role and immediately earned respect from the city's musical leaders. She has performed with artists such as Vince Gill, Zac Brown Band, working with Grammy Award winning producers/songwriters T-Bone Burnett, Colin Linden and Buddy Miller, who became her mentors. She toured her eponymous album for sold-out crowds with Brandon in Germany, Australia, the US and UK. The pair also earned a coveted spot on Sugarland's popular “Still the Same Tour” and toured live with the Nashville cast, selling out London's O2 Arena. Brandon, who began singing at age five under the gentle guidance of his mother, had a very different upbringing and path to Nashville. In 2000, he moved from Enfield, CT, to Nashville, where he taught himself to play guitar. He worked as a courier during the day and spent his nights filling empty composition books with song after song. He spent a decade touring with music legend John Hiatt, first as percussionist and background vocalist and eventually becoming one third of The John Hiatt Trio. He worked on three of the famed artist's albums, the last of which was nominated for a Grammy in the Americana category. Brandon has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning artists Emmylou Harris, Colin Linden, and Mikky Ekko. Young was also invited by John Carter Cash to finish one of his father's unpublished works for Johnny Cash Forever Words. Brandon's music has been heard in shows such as Shameless. A Million Little Things, and Nashville. It was serendipity that brought Bowen Young together in 2013, when Brandon was a last-minute replacement for Clare's no-show duet partner for her first solo set at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. They immediately discovered they had wonderful chemistry both onstage and off. Brandon proposed to Clare at the Ryman Auditorium during the couple's Grand Ole Opry set in 2015. They were married by John Carter Cash at the Cash Cabin in 2017. Website - https://www.bowenyoung.com/
The music of Caleb Caudle was originally recommended to me some years ago by music loving friends that know whereof they speak. Following their suggestions usually yields solid gold. Caleb was recently in Kansas City in 2022 on tour in support of Hayes Carll and then solo to promote his latest critically acclaimed album, Forsythia. He was also finally able to personally promote his album, Better Hurry Up, that was way laid by the Covid-19 pandemic. Forsythia is a portrait of Caleb at his most solitary and reflective. Thematically, it meets anticipation for the unknown future with nostalgia for the past, and reconciles both with meditation in the present. The album, recorded at Cash Cabin and produced by John Carter Cash, features acclaimed session players Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Dennis Crouch and Fred Eltringham, and the vocal talents of Carlene Carter, Elizabeth Cook and Sarah Peasall McGuffey. On his last release, Better Hurry Up, Caudle found himself feeling like time was moving too fast. By early 2020, with a new home base in Nashville, a few years of sobriety under his belt and the release of his best album yet imminent, Caudle was prepared for the next phase of his career. But a few days before Better Hurry Up came out, a devastating tornado ripped through Nashville; a week later, just before he was set to depart for a lengthy tour, the world went into lockdown. The couple moved back to the mountains of North Carolina for the duration of the pandemic, where he spent most of his time in the woods– hiking, observing, thinking and writing. Caleb took some time to call into the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show from the road on his way to Kansas City for a show. Enjoy my on air conversation with the very talented songcrafter….Caleb Caudle.
We had the pleasure of interviewing BOWEN * YOUNG LIVE from The Twisted Wool Lounge at the Historic Woolworth Theatre in Nashville! Most partners, in theory, will promise the world to keep each other safe and sound, but rarely is their vow necessary in everyday practice. However, when husband and wife duo BOWEN * YOUNG—singer/songwriters Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young—found themselves in the midst of a terrifying home invasion, the pair stared down the prospect of being separated, or worse, during a very real situation. Just two days later, without sleep and lacking creativity, BOWEN * YOUNG sat down with their friend and producer Sean McConnell and shared what they'd just been through. After several hours, the glimmer of an idea took hold of Bowen, just as McConnell picked up a guitar and said, “What if it goes a little something like this?” In less than an hour, the chilling story had been shaped into a song, and “Dangerous Love” was born. “Somewhere, deep in the conversation, Clare offered up an idea that was perfectly beautiful in the moment, revolving around the most harrowing part of the whole event,” remembers Young. “...The prospect of one of us being taken away from the other, just because one cruel individual decided it should be so.”The end result is a beautifully dark love song; an ode to just how far true-lovers are willing to go for each other. “Each time we play it is cathartic and healing,” says Young. “Each time we play it we love each other a little bit more. This event was just one part of our story, but it affected us deeply, and the trauma therapy we've done to recover has been one of the best gifts we could have given ourselves and each other. We can't undo what was done to us, but we can, through spreading awareness of how important it is to take care of your mental health, strive to turn that individual's cruelty into another person's healing.”More About BOWEN * YOUNG: Bowen Young's timeless debut record created by Clare Bowen and husband Brandon Robert Young is a multi-sensory feast. Welcoming an Americana duo creating quite a 'buzz' in the music industry: BOWEN * YOUNG The pair—Clare Bowen who spent years playing Scarlett O'Connor on the hit TV show Nashville and her husband Brandon Robert Young who has been touring with Americana legends for the last decade are gearing up for their debut album 'Dangerous Love', slated to come out early 2023 and have created quite a buzz in the build up. It was serendipity that brought the electric duo together in 2013 when Brandon Robert Young was a last-minute replacement for Clare Bowen's no-show duet partner for her first solo set at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. Immediately discovering their wonderful chemistry together, both onstage and off, Brandon proposed to Clare at the Ryman Auditorium during the couple's Grand Ole Opry set in 2015. They were married by John Carter Cash at the Cash Cabin in 2017. And now, after Clare's time spent playing Scarlett O'Conner on the popular show Nashville, performing off-screen with artists such as Vince Gill, Zac Brown Band, and working alongside Grammy Award-winning producers/songwriters T-Bone Burnett and Buddy Miller—and Brandon's decade of touring with Americana legend John Hiatt and collaborations with Grammy Award-winning artists Emmylou Harris, Colin Linden, and Mikky Ekko—BOWEN * YOUNG are set to play around the world in 2023. Opportunities don't come from playing it safe or waiting until you become perfect and everything is right. Sometimes you have to trust it, do your absolute best, believe in yourself, bring the best work forward, and see what happens.Sometimes, the things that we think are perfect don't always turn out to be great. Sometimes, it's the gig, job, or song that you see as not ideal or unappealing that is going to push you to do the next level or the best work of your life.Great opportunities don't usually come dressed as you expect them to be, and no matter how appealing or unappealing an opportunity looks, you will never know where it can lead you until you say yes to it. Saying yes to an opportunity and giving it your best is where the magic happens. Judging opportunities and thinking of them as less than ideal is an excuse for not giving your best effort.Stop worrying about making everything perfect, and start giving your best to every opportunity. Any opportunity is great if you believe in yourself and give it the best shot.To thrive, you must be willing to take risks and be open to doing the best work you can. The worst thing you can do is shy away from a great opportunity because it doesn't seem like the perfect one. Just go for it and see what happens. You might end up having the most incredible time; if not, you will learn from it, and either way, it was worth the effort. In this episode, Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young, a husband-and-wife duo singing group, talk about how to build your career, set boundaries, and succeed as an artist and entrepreneur. “Empathy and compassion are big, and you have to hold on to them as an artist.”Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode:[03:47] Clare and Brandon share how they became a great singing duo and, more importantly, husband and wife.[11:22] How to stop playing it safe and stepping out even when you feel it's not your ideal gig or perfect timing[15:30] What led Clare to be called for the nationals despite being shy, introverted, and coming from a small town in Australia and her experience? When we listen to music, in many cases, our ears will gravitate to the beat. But sometimes songwriters will throw in some Odd time signatures into songs to add another layer of feeling and information into the song. In many cases these songs may give you the feeling that something is a bit “off” especially when you try and tap your feet to them. This can happen in the most subtle of ways or it can be all the way bonkers. Well that's what we are gonna shine the spotlight on in today's show. Today we're gonna discuss our favorite songs that have odd time signatures. And today we have a very special guest to help us on this topic. Ross Bellenoit is joining us!Since moving to Philly in 2003 Ross has been killin it. As a guitarist, songwriter, or producer he's worked with a ton of amazing artists including Amos Lee, Birdie Busch, The Sweetback Sisters, John Carter Cash, and the Joseph Parsons Band. He's also made 5 awesome and intricately musical albums with his band Muscle Tough, with a sound that is a heavily improvised blend of modal jazz, funk, and psychedelia. And as a solo artist he's put out 5 stellar solo albums with his latest “Where Does the Go?” being released in 2020. www.rossbellenoit.comhttps://muscletoughband.com/Spotify Playlist “Songs In Odd Time ” www.therightfiction.com
This episode is the story of a lost live album by the great Johnny & June Carter Cash, recorded shortly after the legendary Folsom Prison live album. This Cash album could do a lot of good in that area.Markus and Ray talk with William "Hawk" Semins and Pete Bell of The Owlsley Stanley Foundation, about this show, and their ongoing efforts to preserve this audio legacy! Then they're joined by John Carter Cash, legendary producer and artist, and son of John and June! Meet L.A. guitarist, singer-songwriter, Janet Robin...or as Cheryl likes to call her, Cousin Janet. When one of your first guitar teachers is Randy Rhoades who played with Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osborne, you're already off to, shall we say, an unusual start. Playing in Precious Metal before she was old enough to drink, Janet was only allowed in for sound checks and shows at some of the hottest clubs on the L.A. scene. She moved on to tour with Lindsey Buckingham, Meredith Brooks, Michelle Shocked, and Air Supply, and had a solo album “Everything Has Changed,” produced by John Carter Cash. Janet talks to Cheryl about all she's done, and the one gig she turned down that taught her never to say “no.” Plus find out who was her toughest boss, what IS The String Revolution, and what on Earth has Janet done to the Blues???

Cash releases two new tracks Ana Cristina Cash, who is of Cuban descent, was raised in Miami, Florida, and began her professional music career at age six. She quickly became an accomplished champion of the singing competitions on the variety show, Sabado Gigante. Her recordings showcase her broad vocal range, from a deep resonating contralto to an amazing soaring soprano, revealing what is known to some as a “whistle register.” She was only 15 when she released her self-titled debut album in Spanish via Sony Music's Latin division. In 2005, she became the first Hispanic-American to perform the “Star-Spangled Banner” for a presidential inauguration for President Bush. In 2016, she married music producer, John Carter Cash -- the only son of Johnny and June Carter Cash -- and has since been writing and recording the music she was born to sing. Cash's music perfectly blends her connection with rockabilly and gritty blues, adding in a flavor of country and soul to create her own distinctive sound. During the quarantine lockdown, Buddy Iahn and Matt Bailey spoke with Ana about her career, including her latest album Shine and her dream recording project. Unbeknownst to us, we are airing the interview as she releases two singles: a reissue of "Brand New Pair of Shoes" and the Christmas track "Mele Kalikimaka." The reissue of "Brand New Pair of Shoes" appears on the digital-only release Johnny Cash - Forever Words (Expanded Edition) that features words written by Johnny Cash with music created by modern artists. The song is a co-write between Ana and her father-in-law, Johnny Cash. Ana put music to lyrics written by Johnny Cash himself, to create a jazz-inspired tune. The song was first released on Ana's album, Shine, in April 2020. Produced by John Carter Cash and recorded at the historic Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, TN, “Mele Kalikimaka” is a lively song with a dreamy, tropical melody and lyrical sentiments of trading in the stereotypical wintry Christmas for a sandy beachy one. Made famous by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters in 1950, “Mele Kalikimaka” was written by R. Alex Anderson. The song takes its title from the Hawaiian phrase Mele Kalikimaka, meaning “Merry Christmas.” Check out our other Podcasts! Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify Podcasts, TuneIn and YouTube.
