In which The Curmudgeons continue their exploration of all the cool and revolutionary sounds blasting out of the City of Angels in the 1990s. By 1995, the music world had been grungified, making things safer, brighter and lovelier for not only hard-rock artists, but folks of the more soul-breaking, confessional variety. And that L.A. satisfied both ends of that spectrum between 1995 and 1999. Rage Against the Machine, Tool, System of a Down and Kyuss all blasted down doors and melted minds. Meanwhile, Beck, eels and Los Lobos soothed the more sensitive souls. We take a run through work by those artists and more on this episode. We begin this episode, though, by discussing the legacies of two recently departed icons, Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan. Is it possible to judge an album by its cover? Absolutely. Especially when it's got skeleton hands, raging suns, or Geiger's flesh nightmares on it.In this episode of the Beat Motel podcast, Andrew and recurring co-host Martin Whiskin dive deep into the album art that shaped our musical tastes, plastered our pencil cases, and possibly got Dead Kennedys sued. From the raw power of Monster Magnet and Kyuss, to the delicate doodles of The Levellers, to Pink Floyd being accused of ripping off Blur 20 years early (or was it the other way round?), it's a deep, noisy, nostalgic ride.▶ Featuring tales of crusty gigs, folk festivals, DIY patches, and massive, illegal sound systems.▶ Not featuring: tasteful restraint, coherent structure, or Richard Ashcroft's blessing.### Riffs of the week#### Martin Whiskin's Riff- Bellowhead - Rigs of The Time#### Andrew's Riff- Smote - Drommon Pt1### Martin Whiskin's track choices1. We already tackled Bon Jovi's 'Keep The Faith' album back in Season Two and here we are again face to face with some rock cowboys, this time to have a listen to 'These Days' from 1995. And to help us out we are joined by our good friend Chris Green, a man who has played guitar alongside more rock royalty than you could shake a Fender Stratocaster at and someone who really knows his classic Bon Jovi albums. So will this pass muster? Will it join those other albums like 'New Jersey' and 'Slippery When Wet'? I mean obviously not but let's see what we all reckon. The Bon Jovi album was number one for four weeks so we get to talk about loads of other album and single releases from such acts as Reef, Foo Fighters, Kyuss and WASP. Hmmm. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating or comment over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. And if you want to donate to our PayPal account for the price of a pint or a cup of coffee that is always appreciated as well obviously. Cheers!
In which the Curmudgeons once again venture to the City of Angels to recapture all the great vibes generated during the 1990s. After a 1980s in which glam metal and punk scenes dominated, what came next for Los Angeles? Well, the trade winds blew in from the Pacific Northwest, and the influence of grunge made the music crunchier and louder, giving us bands like Tool and Weezer. Meanwhile, the longstanding stylings of the L.A. underground found their way into the mainstream, giving us radio-ready glory from Jane's Addiction, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beck. A lot happened in L.A. during the dawn of the Internet age. We begin to cover those happenings in this episode. Július 19-én negyedik alkalommal lép fel Magyarországon az amerikai Queens Of The Stone Age, ezúttal The End Is Nero nevet kapott turnéja budapesti állomásán a Budapest Parkban. Amennyiben hozzá tudsz járulni a podcast jövőbeni működéséhez, a Donably felületén itt megteheted. https://www.donably.com/wanted-podcast

Salut i música! Han sonat: Berri Txarrak, Mars Red Sky, Bala, All Them Witches, The Pilgrim, Stoned Jesus, Naxatras, Kyuss i Russian Circles.
Discord & Rhyme kicks June off with a feel good hit of the summer. Join Dan, Mike, and Rich for a ride through Queens of the Stone Age's 2000 sophomore release Rated R, an album that seemed like a refreshing antithesis of mainstream rock trends at the turn of the millennium. Building off the desert rock DNA of Josh Homme's previous band Kyuss and infusing elements of psychedelia, pop, and punk with a healthy sense of creative, quirky arrangements, Rated R endures as one of the most exciting hard rock albums of the 2000s. There is a river of green horrible. Kyuss grubs seethe all around. Scaly has been swallowed by a giant worm. Now the Slayers must face the full might of Dragotha. Fair to say, the situation is not ideal.
And the circus leaves town".
Adam, Andy, and Travis kick off a multi-episode deep dive into the band Queens Of The Stone Age, beginning with the earliest days when they were still called Kyuss.

The Slayers are beset on all sides in the Temple of Kyuss. Will Parker fall victim to the diamond-eyed Dwarf of Doom?
In 1995, Los del Rio infected popular dance culture with their one-hit wonder, “The Macarena”, the U.S. national debt was only $5,000,000,000,000 (five trillion), both eBay and Craigslist were birthed into popular culture, Taco Bell offered The Volcano Burrito and The Double Decker Taco menu items for a limited time (each for less than $1.00, btw), and O.J. Simpson was acquitted thanks (in no small part) to Robert Kardashian, the man who would ultimately become responsible for fueling the success of Gary Holt's incredibly popular line of outerwear. Meanwhile, in the world of 1995 metal, Kyuss called it quits shortly after releasing “…And The Circus Leaves Town” and DOWN unleashed their debut masterpiece “NOLA” on the EXACT SAME DAY that Dream Theater released their first EP featuring their 23-minute epic title track, “A Change Of Seasons”! Ep. 120 Black Sabbath - Master of Reality - Review & Reaction! Black Sabbath's Master of Reality, released in 1971, is a landmark album in heavy metal history. It took the band's signature doom-laden sound to a new level, emphasizing slower, heavier, and more menacing riffs. This album was crucial in shaping the doom, sludge, and stoner metal subgenres, influencing countless bands like Sleep, Kyuss, and Electric Wizard. Tony Iommi's down-tuned guitar (due to a factory accident that damaged his fingertips) contributed to an even darker and thicker sound, making Master of Reality one of the heaviest records of its time. Master of Reality laid the groundwork for multiple metal subgenres, particularly doom metal, sludge metal, and stoner rock. Its raw, down tuned heaviness, combined with themes of war, religion, drugs, and despair, resonated with generations of metalheads. The album is frequently cited as one of the greatest metal records of all time, and its influence can be heard in the works of bands like Metallica, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. This album solidified Black Sabbath's role as the forefathers of heavy metal, proving that music could be both devastatingly heavy and deeply introspective. Over 50 years later, Master of Reality remains essential listening for any rock or metal fan.
This week, we start a new series all about appreciating the shredded, gravelly, gritty, raspy pipes and throats of rock n' roll. We are focusing on lead singers who crafted truly special tones with their sandpapered delivery. Join us in celebrating these unique sets of pipes that set them apart from all the others. Anyone can scream, but only a few deliver gravel, grit & glory! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Our appreciation, this week, of rough and textured singing extends to all of the genres that we love. Kevin never realized how much this style of vocalizing had an impact on him until putting this whole thing together. Ever looked at your old gig T-shirts and thought, "What was I on?" Well, we have, and in this episode, Andrew and his co-host, Dr. Sam, take a long, hard look at the bands and genres they once adored but now make them cringe (or at least yawn). We start strong with Andrew explaining how Jackie Chan's autobiography is more important than socialism, followed by a deep philosophical debate about whether public transport seats and kids' clothes share the same stain-hiding technology. Then, it's time for Riff of the Week, featuring Vulture Feather, leading to complaints about modern albums being allergic to variety. From there, it's straight into the theme—genres and bands we've grown out of—which turns into an old-man rant-fest about ska-punk, pop-punk, groove metal, and the perils of a one-trick-pony approach to music.Expect: A loving takedown of Reel Big Fish, Pantera, and Choking Victim A moment of nostalgia that almost redeems the ska-punk era Why Andrew's bookshelf once betrayed him on a Zoom call A touching farewell to Kyuss, who were just a gateway drug to Black Sabbath The reason Phil Anselmo's questionable politics make Pantera even harder to revisit Weekend at Bernie's: The Pantera Tour EditionAs always, we go wildly off-topic, including a passionate discussion about AI eating your data, how ska bassists should be paid double, and why people walking around with their hands in their trousers need to get a grip (literally). Then Andrew slams the door on the episode mid-sentence, leaving Dr. Sam confused but not surprised.Give it a listen. If you disagree, go start your own damn podcast.### Riffs of the week#### Dr Sam's Riff- Vulture Feather - Blood Knot (0.46)#### Andrew's Riff- Shels - Journey to the plains (5:35)### Dr Sam's track choices1. In this special crossover episode, we're spotlighting Buffalo's 1973 Volcanic Rock—a raw, proto-metal gem that helped shape the sound of 80s Metal and 90s Rock. With primal riffs and fearless energy, Buffalo laid the groundwork for the heaviness embraced by bands like Metallica and Soundgarden. Picture it: the airwaves dominated by Dark Side of the Moon, Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy, and Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Rock was entering its teenage years, shedding its innocence for something darker, more primal. Halfway around the world, Australia was a raw, untamed frontier where danger lurked in every shadow. Venomous creatures, desolate outback stretches, and a wild, unrelenting spirit shaped the people and their art. It was here, in this harsh and unpredictable landscape, that Buffalo unleashed their sophomore album, Volcanic Rock, on Vertigo Records. Like the searing sun, it scorched a path for heavy music, standing defiantly alongside its better-known contemporaries.Buffalo was no Zeppelin or Sabbath knockoff. This Brisbane-to-Sydney transplant created their own blend of bluesy grit and proto-metal menace. Formed initially as “Head,” their pivot to Buffalo was guided by a manager who believed that bands starting with “B” (Beatles, Beach Boys) were bound for success. A dart on a map landed on Buffalo, and thus began a name and sound etched in volcanic fury.Heavy as Hell, Raw as the OutbackVolcanic Rock lived up to its name—primitive, thunderous, and unpredictable. With Dave Tice's raw vocal delivery leading the charge, and guitarist John Baxter's primal riffage painting sonic landscapes, the album combined blues-rock roots with a proto-doom intensity that felt otherworldly. Songs like “Freedom” deliver nine-minute odysseys, meandering through psychedelic jam territory before crashing back into riff-laden crescendos.Yet, the record wasn't just music—it was spectacle. Its controversial cover art—a volcano shaped like a female torso spewing lava—reflected the wild creativity and raw edge of the band's ethos. It was shocking then and remains iconic now, an image as bold as the sound within.Misfits in a Golden AgeDespite their innovative sound, Buffalo never quite broke through. Opening for heavyweights like Black Sabbath and Rainbow, they faced the mischief of tour mates like Ritchie Blackmore, who infamously sabotaged their set. Still, they soldiered on, creating an album that influenced generations of grunge, stoner rock, and doom metal—long before the labels existed. But Buffalo's story is also one of commercial failure and creative frustration. Pushed by their label to pivot toward radio-friendly fare, they resisted, choosing instead to blaze their own trail. By the time their final album, Average Rock 'n' Roller, hit shelves in 1977, the band was running on fumes. Yet, Volcanic Rock remains their defining statement, a timeless blueprint for heavy rock adventurers. The Legacy: Why Volcanic Rock Still MattersSo why revisit Volcanic Rock in 2025? Because it's an artifact of pure, unadulterated rock energy—a raw, imperfect gem that prefigures everything from Kyuss to Queens of the Stone Age. Its primal simplicity, coupled with its audacious ambition, captures the essence of a time when rock was still dangerous.Want to know more? It's tired and we're late. No, wait a minute... Okay, that's right. There's much afoot at the Circle J, and the Garage Hour goons have another insightful batch of geekbrain excellence for you: the other side of the coin of our skillset episode a few weeks back, thanks to a gal in the #3 lane who couldn't look up from her Distractomatic 5000 long enough to not drive into the bumper of the truck in front of her. Don't be the anti-inspiration for our incompetence episode (and don't be a Carl). There's also guidance on measuring up to 100% you, avoiding the shallow end of the tool pool, using your head to avoid the obvious, and trying to use your capabilities once in a while instead of sucking all the time. Moving beyond the need for being the best you you can do (coocoo k'choo), there's insight on more electric car fails by the OEs (begging the G for good money to keep spending on bad ones), wildebeests and crocodiles and educational television (back when it was worth a beer), and steering clear of incompetence multipliers (and bent pliers).

It feels like it's taken forever but here we are at the end of season 5, our journey through 1994. And as is now tradition we have put an episode together to discuss what our own personal top ten lists of the best albums released during the year are. After a brief chat about some of the albums that NEARLY made our top tens we then get into it and have a lovely conversation about bands like Portishead, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, Senser, NIN, Kyuss and loads of others. We're also very grateful to some of our friends who contributed their thoughts about their favourite albums of 1994 - big love to the wonderful comedians Stephen Grant and Rich Wilson, and Steve & Gaz from Trve.Cvlt.Pop - stay tuned right at the end of the episode to hear their whole conversation about their choices where Steve manages to not mention the Chaka Demus & Pliers album which frankly none of us could have predicted. If you want to check our our playlist with songs from each of our own choices on it then you can find it here. We will be back ASAP with a whole new season of albums to look at as we go through 1995 but until then enjoy this episode and as always please do let us know your own faves from '94 if we totally missed them out.

We are thrilled to have ex-Kyuss frontman John Garcia on the podcast this week! In this rare interview, John talks about collaborating with Bill Kelliher from Mastodon. John is currently touring : https://www.bandsintown.com/a/610548-john-garcia
Uncle Buggie is under attack from a weird giant bony thing. Can the Slayers hold off the forces of Kyuss for long enough for the druids to escape? More importantly, can they finish Book 9 so we can all move on to something else?
(NOTE: this episode was recorded at the end of Summer 2021 and was lost to the annals (read: anals) of Butt Blast history as editing other, more timely episodes took priority. Enjoy!) The Buddhist Blatt Boizst™ pontificate over the influence of Kyuss, especially the butt rock vocal stylings of John Garcia. They play a true or false quiz game based on an absurd, but somewhat typical, self-serious black metal elitist interview with Satyr from Satyricon. They also touch upon the ethics of lucid dreaming of a fan fiction world in which fictional characters are murdered. Finally, they hypothesize that the counter-serve restaurant by the name of Twisted Fresh (aka Twiztid Fresh) is just a chaotic, Insane Clown Posse-inspired restaurant whose tagline is “We're REALLY fucked up”. WHOOP WHOOOOOP!!! How does Wulf actually eat his pizza? Will the Inverted Cross-Examiner puke by the end of the episode? Will Professor Grindstein finally watch the videos of David Ellefson masturbating? Find out on this previously LOST episode of the Butt Metal Blast Cast!
Who's up for a bit of Swedish reggae-pop then? Who knew that was going to be a big genre in the early 90s? Apparently Ace of Base did and they gave us quite a lot of it on this, their debut* album, which got to number one in 1994. As well as discussing the merits of The Sign and All That She Wants we chat some rubbish about Suicidal Tendencies, Kyuss and the Reverend Horton Heat among many others. We also mention our May 2024 Brighton Fringe live shows, tickets for which are already on sale and can be bought from the website here. We'd love to see some friendly faces if you fancy coming along! If you'd like to listen to the Unsung Podcast episode that we mention all about the Nazi rumours behind the band then check it out here - it's a really interesting and well put together bit of research. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers! *sort of debut but repackaged and rejigged. Don't be a pedant.
This week we present another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. A few weeks ago, we heard a band on our “Keep On Truckin'” episode that Robert said he'd like to explore further. So, we are going to do just that! This is a Viking band straight from the deserts of Sweden... or something like that. We're talking about the most awesomely fuzzy band in the history of desert, stoner, fuzz rock: TRUCKFIGHTERS!!!What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode covers a band that is clearly in the Lost category for most. If you were too ask, “How fuzzy could this band be?”; the answer would be, “…none fuzzier!”. As always, we hope that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Truckfighters – “Nitro” from Fuzzsplit Of The Century (2003)Truckfighters – “Gweedo-Weedo” from Gravity X (2005)Truckfighters – “Slacken” from Phi (2007)Truckfighters – “The New High” from Mania (2009)Truckfighters - “The Chairman” from Universe (2014)Truckfighters – “Fiend” from V (2016)Truckfighters – “Atomic” from Live In London (2016)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

While the Alexandria, Virginia based grind lords are one of the most recognized bands of the genre, HEAD CAGE has a more “mainstream” sound that could best be described as a convergence of 80's & 90's thrash with an infusion of hard core and doom textures as well as subtle hints of industrial sampling and modern metal, packing a veritable “buffet” of jaw droppingly sick riffs into each and every song, resulting in a complete work that's so satisfying it's virtually impossible to not listen to on perpetual repeat. Hold off on consuming those “big fruity drinks” until after you've heard our brand new “health advice” segment, including an acknowledgement of “Sober October”, a breaking news update impacting the nymphomaniac community, as well as our ongoing debate regarding “which itch is worst?”. Get ready to learn the identity of the individual responsible for every outgoing answering machine message in the 80's (not to mention the spoken word intro to “Prowler in the Yard”), discover the hidden dangers of banana peels at funerals and JOIN US as we dive into one of the finest moments ever chronicled in the history of metal and unlock the secrets hidden within PIG DESTROYER's HEAD CAGE. We sit down with Patrick Schober of Monster Riff and Ryan Foster of Slightly Fuzzed to discuss all things fuzzy, heavy and loud and to answer the age old question... does it in fact doom? We discuss the impact of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss, humour in the stoner genre, its lyrical themes and the general attitude of the scene. We share our favourite stoner/psych albums of 2023 so far and Ryan and Patrick share how they came to create satire based stoner rock content. This week we're discussing the latest album by Queens of the Stone Age, In Times New Roman… We've talked about Josh Homme on this show before (see our Kyuss and Them Crooked Vultures episodes), and much of how we feel about him hasn't changed in terms of how he makes records. This album isn't a huge jump in any direction, mostly just more of the same. But none of it is bad and if you're a die hard fan, this record will scratch that itch.Closing track: “Sicily”In Times New Roman… on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/album/2ZTDmH94OLjeNaOvT7Ngwk?si=69924c481bfd4d9bPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:New album on BandcampDebut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsite
QOTSA, aka QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, began back in the late “Nineteen Hundreds” in Seattle, Washington following the breakup of Josh Homme's former band, desert metal legends Kyuss. With a wide array of sonic textures, layers, and sound design sorcery ingrained within their music, as with Kyuss, QOTSA is another prime example of a band whose albums should be listened to and enjoyed via headphones (and if we're being honest, since “this show is about honesty”, a healthy infusion of relaxers will help to further enhance this experience). It's time to realize which nationality's coitus “sounds delicious” and understand that the pain of regret from a disappointing high gravity brew rivals the pain of regret that comes from copping a squat “on your balls”. Prepare to bear witness to one of the greatest alcohol “collabs” ever imagined and discover the powerful allure of food truck fare when you JOIN US as we get outside the desert and go inside the metal with none other than QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. On this episode of THE HEAVY GALAXY SHOW, the guys sit down with vocalist/drummer Craig Riggs (KIND/SASQUATCH/ROADSAW). Riggs talks to us about KIND's upcoming third release 'Close Encounters' and the musical/vocal differences compared the bands first two albums. John and Craig reminisce on Riggs and SASQUATCH's performance at Stoned & Dusted 2018' and the infamous 'kick drum' fiasco. Riggs discusses the early days of ROADSAW recording the 'Nationwide' album with famed producer and songwriter Roy Z (Bruce Dickinson/Halford) when they were signed to MIA Records which went defunct shortly after the album's release. Craig goes over the current status of Sasquatch and how they are preparing for their next record, compares the current heavy rock scene to the 90's when Roadsaw was gaining ground in the scene, how he helped to start renowned recording studio Mad Oak in 2000, touring with Kyuss during the 90's while striking up a friendship with Queens Of The Stoneage's Josh Homme and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cmspn/message
