In music, experimentalism is more than just "that one time in college." This week, we cover the albums that dared to be different, were fearless in their pursuit of breaking new ground, and subverted traditional expectations of what music should sound like. The spirit of experimental music is alive and well on The Sound, the debut solo album by guitarist, cellist, composer producer, arranger, painter, and educator Knox Chandler. This project is a musical memoir depicting the shift in his surroundings from the urbanism of New York, London, and Berlin to the serene rural setting of the Connecticut shoreline. Through 10 diaristic and transportative soundscapes, The Sound incorporates Knox's "Soundribbon" style of meditative, powerfully cinematic guitar, accompanied by upright bass and percussion, and is paired with a book of paintings, sketches, and writings. You no doubt have heard Knox Chandler's work throughout a career that has spanned four decades, as a member of The Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Cyndi Lauper's band, and The Golden Palominos. He's also played, composed, produced, and arranged on dozens of records including REM's Automatic For The People, Depeche Mode's Exciter, David Gahan's Paper Monsters, Paula Cole's Harbinger, and many more. Special thanks to Howard Wuelfing from Howlin' Wuelf Media for the introduction and coordination. Proud members of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Learn more about your ad choices. First time author Jay Nachman has accomplished something special. His new book, Graham Parker's Howlin' Wind tells the origin story of how the great Graham Parker came to be the songwriter we know him to be and how that first album with the Rumour came to be. Starting from his pre-fame days in the coastal town of Deepcut. we learn of Graham's blue-collar upbringing and how the fates of him and the band Brinsley Schwarz came together to form a perfect team. Jay's been good to the Hustle over the years as a PR rep for many prior guests, but this time he brings on Graham himself to discuss the book. Enjoy! Kyle Rowland and Kenny Neal join me on episode 143 for a retrospective on James ‘Mr Superharp' Cotton.Born in 1935 on the Bonnie Blue plantation in Mississippi, James Cotton received his first harmonica from his mother and learnt by ear, captivated by Sonny Boy Williamson II's King Biscuit Time broadcasts. From nine to sixteen he lived with Sonny Boy, then played with Howlin' Wolf before holding the harmonica chair in the Muddy Waters' band for twelve years. Striking out solo in the late 1960s, he spent the next forty five years releasing acclaimed records and delivering explosive live shows, powered by a tireless work ethic and boundless energy. He earned two Grammy Awards—one with Muddy Waters and one for a solo album—and garnered further nominations.A lifelong devotee of the blues, he gave back generously in his later years and became like family to those closest to him.Links:James Cotton website: http://www.jamescottonsuperharp.comDiscography: http://jamescottonsuperharp.com/discography/Kenny Neal's website: https://kennynealmusic.com/Kyle Rowland's website: https://www.kylerowlandblues.com/James Cotton and Seydel harmonicas: https://www.seydel1847.de/jamescottonVideos:Bonnie Blue documentary trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lidw_qH1D4QSeydel James Cotton tribute with lots of photos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQJrI0oioKE&list=RDKQJrI0oioKEComplete This Order song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e09HOfVB21g&list=RDe09HOfVB21gKyle Rowland with The James Cotton Tribute Band in 2022: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZfajGFBE74&list=RDLZfajGFBE74A ten year old Josh King singing Hoochie Coochie Man with Cotton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blBAqb_jyn0&list=RDblBAqb_jyn0The James Cotton Band Live at North Sea Jazz in 1983: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CVvNe0OpZY&list=RD2CVvNe0OpZYPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS--------------------------------Blue Moon Harmonicas: https://bluemoonharmonicas.comSupport the show

Send us a textEver wondered what it would be like to completely reinvent yourself after a successful career? Christopher Wyze's remarkable journey from advertising executive to blues musician proves it's never too late to follow your passion.Growing up in Indiana, Christopher's introduction to blues came when his college-aged brother brought home BB King and Bobby Blue Bland records. Though the music resonated with him, life took him in a different direction – building a career in marketing, running an advertising agency, and writing books. Music remained a distant memory until a chance encounter at a church wine dinner twenty years ago led to an impromptu performance that changed everything. When invited to front a local band, Christopher embraced the opportunity despite having been away from music for decades. Feeling he needed to contribute more than just vocals, he taught himself harmonica and eventually found his way to Clarksdale, Mississippi – the heart of delta blues country. There, he met Ralph Carter, former musical director for Eddie Money, who became his producer and collaborator. Their partnership led to recording sessions at the legendary Muscle Shoals studios and a record deal with Big Radio Records, a company with direct ties to Sam Phillips, who discovered Elvis and Howlin' Wolf. What makes Christopher's story particularly fascinating is how his life experience shaped his music. Unlike genres where youth dominates, blues benefits from the authenticity that comes with age. As Christopher puts it, "This music doesn't happen without experience." His background as a writer and marketer gave him unique tools for songwriting and promoting his music. Perhaps most remarkably, his song "Three Hours from Memphis" – written while driving to meet his producer – unwittingly predicted his own journey before it fully unfolded.Ready to be inspired by a second-act success story? Listen as Christopher shares how embracing the blues led him to find joy, purpose, and unexpected friendships in the later chapters of his life.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/Christopher Wyze: https://christopherwyzeandthetellers.com/ Support the show

Gossip, Tittle Tattle, rumors, hearsay, dishing the dirt, idle talk, back stabbing…. It's not one of the seven deadly sins, but maybe it should be. How many friendships, how many marriages, and how many jobs have been lost through spiteful blather? In this episode of Double Trouble Howlin' Wolf and Gene Pitney testify to the adverse effects of pitiless small town talk. Mind your own business, “they” say; “discretion is the better part of valor,”, “People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones,” etc. I'm sure you've heard them all, but how's your ratio of disciplined restraint? That's a lesson I had to learn the hard way. Gossip may feel like a way of getting closer to someone by sharing intimacies. But, the next thing you know that person tells the other person, and YOU'RE the odd one out. Best to maintain a lock-jawed policy of trust. HOWLIN' WOLFWho's Been Talking, from 1960, swings it's savage message with a Calypso beat. Chester Burnett, the blues master trained by Charlie Patton and Sonny Boy Williamson; the discovery by a 19 year old Ike Turner for Sam Phillips and Sun Records; the neck and neck competition with Muddy Waters, and inductee into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame delivers his self-penned diatribe against the effect of cheap talk with his usual lupine swagger. “Who's been talking?” Wolf wants to know, and when he finds out, whoa, the owner of those loose lips better hide, or they might get their jaw broken. GENE PITNEYTown Without Pity was a 1961 Kirk Douglas film with an uncredited, re-written screenplay by the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo, featuring a score by Dimitri Tiomkin, who also composed the theme for High Noon, among others. Town Without Pity was crooned by Gene Pitney, the heartthrob with the 3 octave range - and became Pitney's first top 40 single. He garnered many accolades in a career which also boasted bull's eyes as a songwriter, composing hits for Ricky Nelson with Hello Marylou, and Bobby Vee's Rubber Ball. In this bluesy lament in a minor key, Pitney tugs at our heart strings as he bemoans the besmirching of his purest love by the wagging tongues of spite.

email: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com (Some of) My Favorite Covers: From the earliest days of rock and roll, cover songs have been a vital part of the music's forward movement, drawing on its past. Long before we knew about digital discovery, one of the fastest ways for new artists to connect with audiences was to reimagine an existing hit and put it on an album or 45—infusing it with their own style, energy, and attitude. A Chuck Berry riff might get filtered through the Beatles' harmonies, or an old blues song could get a new spin in the hands of the Rolling Stones. Musicians have always looked back to reinterpret the songs that shaped them, essentially creating a conversation across decades of music. Great rock and roll covers often redefine the song. Jimi Hendrix's “All Along the Watchtower” transformed Bob Dylan's stark folk ballad into a guitar-rock, psychedelic stomper. Aretha Franklin took Otis Redding's “Respect” and made it a soul-rock anthem of empowerment. Nirvana's raw take on David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" introduced the track to an entirely new audience. In each case, the cover didn't just honor the original—it expanded its reach. The best covers don't just repeat the past—they rewrite it, proving that a great song can live many lives. 10 Iconic Rock and Roll Covers and How They Transformed the Original Jimi Hendrix – All Along the Watchtower (1968) Originally by Bob Dylan, Hendrix electrified the song with guitars and redefined it as a rock classic. Dylan himself later performed it in Hendrix's style. The Beatles – Twist and Shout (1963) Originally recorded by The Top Notes and popularized by The Isley Brothers, the Beatles turned it into their own via John Lennon's famously shredded vocal take. Aretha Franklin – Respect (1967) Originally by Otis Redding, Aretha flipped the perspective, injecting it with feminist firepower, gospel-inspired vocals, and made it an anthem for empowerment and equality. The Rolling Stones – Little Red Rooster (1964) Originally by Willie Dixon (recorded by Howlin' Wolf), the Stones slowed it down, leaning into the deep Chicago blues feel, introducing American blues to a younger audience. Nirvana – The Man Who Sold the World (1993) Originally by David Bowie, Nirvana's MTV Unplugged version stripped it to a haunting acoustic vibe that resonated with '90s alternative fans - and (re)introduced Bowie to them, Joe Cocker – With a Little Help from My Friends (1968) Originally by The Beatles, Cocker turned the Sgt. Pepper and Ringo song into a soulful, slow-burning rocker. Killer organ and gospel vocals. Janis Joplin – Piece of My Heart (1968) Originally by Erma Franklin, Joplin's version with Big Brother and the Holding Company was a raw and bluesy. The Clash – I Fought the Law (1979) Written in 1958 and first released in 1960 by The Crickets (after Buddy Holly left) and popularized by The Bobby Fuller Four, The Clash injected punk. It was their first single in the United States. Creedence Clearwater Revival – I Heard It Through the Grapevine (1970) Originally by Gladys Knight & The Pips and made famous by Marvin Gaye, CCR turned the Motown hit into an 11-minute swamp-rock jam. Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (1994) Originally by Leonard Cohen, Buckley's haunting performance influenced artists in the decades that followed. Further Listening: 4 Lesser-Known but Brilliant Beatles Covers The Black Keys – She Said, She Said (2002) A gritty, stripped-down garage-rock take on The Beatles' psychedelic classic from Revolver. Siouxsie and the Banshees – Dear Prudence (1983) The Beatles' ballad morphs in goth-tinged new wave.. Gov't Mule – She Said, She Said / Tomorrow Never Knows (1998) A jam-band fusion of two Beatles tracks Fiona Apple – Across the Universe (1998) Slowed to a languid pace, Apple leans into the cosmic melancholy

Shrimp Scandal Exposed: Jackson Restaurants Caught in Wild-Caught Deception! In a eye-opening segment, Clay Edwards breaks down a new genetic testing study by CD Consulting (for Southern Shrimp Alliance) revealing widespread fraud in Jackson-area seafood spots. From June 23-26, 2025, 44 restaurants were sampled; only 14 served genuine US wild-caught shrimp as advertised – the rest dished out imported fakes. "Mississippians deserve to know what they're being served – wild-caught is pride & livelihood!" quotes COO Aaron Williams. Clay lists the authentic 14: Aha Crawfish Bistro, Barry's Seafood, Da Shack, Drago's, Howlin' Miles, Half Shell Oyster House, McB's Bar & Grill, Primo's Cafe, Shaggy's on the Rez, Season's Crawfish, Shuckers on the Reservoir, Table 100, The Mayflower, The Twisted Turnip. Praises them as well-run, mostly local/MS-owned institutions: "No surprise – they hold higher standards, don't lie to friends & neighbors." Notes 18 explicitly inauthentic, 10 implicitly (via branding), 2 admitted imports post-query. Ties to new MS labeling law (July 1, 2025) for transparency: "Hope retesting shows improvement – honesty, not deception!" Calls out suppliers' role but stresses accountability.
