Texan Cindy Walker already was a well-established songwriter in the fall of 1955 when she attended Nashville's annual disc jockey convention.By then, she had worked with Bing Crosby, not to mention Gene Autry and Bob Wills. She had even scored her own hit in 1944 with her recording of Wiley Walker and Gene Sullivan's "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again."But Cindy Walker's greatest contribution to American pop music was only now about to happen. How the Song Came to BeYears later, Walker would recall that day. She was leaving the Nashville conference when she was approached by country singing star Eddy Arnold.“He said, 'I've been wanting to see you. I've got a song title,'” she remembered. “He said, ‘I've showed it around a little bit and I haven't had any luck, but I know it's a good title.'” Walker liked the title Arnold suggested — “You Don't Know Me” — but at first she couldn't figure out what to do with it. Back home, though, “I was just sitting there and all of a sudden, here comes, 'You give your hand to me and then you say hello'.” "But I couldn't find any way to finish it,” she told a writer decades later during her Grammy Foundation Living History interview. “Maybe two or three weeks went by and nothing happened. Then one day, I thought, 'You give your hand to me and then you say goodbye' and when I said that, I knew exactly where it was going. I couldn't wait to get to the phone to call Eddy."Crossover GoldWalker's resulting song was a definitive crossover hit. The first rendition of “You Don't Know Me” was released by pop singer Jerry Vale, who in early 1956 carried it to #14 on Billboard's pop chart. Two months later, it entered the country music world when Eddy Arnold's version made it to #10.Then along came Brother Ray. In 1962, Ray Charles included the tune on his #1 pop album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music. His single of “You Don't Know Me” (the song's overall biggest-selling version ever) went all the way to #2 on Billboard's “Hot 100.” That same year it also topped the Easy Listening chart for three weeks.Later the song was used in the 1993 comedy film Groundhog Day, and it was the 12th No. 1 country hit for Mickey Gilley in 1981.Walker's fellow Texan Willie Nelson honored her with his album You Don't Know Me: The Songs of Cindy Walker in 2006, the year she died at age 88. In her obituary, The New York Times noted that Walker had Top 10 hits in every decade from the 1940s to the 1980s.Our Take on the TuneMichelle Hoge brought her band mates this song about a decade ago. It immediately found a place on the next album they were working on and it became a standard feature in most of The Flood's shows. These days, the guys don't see Michelle so often — she and her husband Rich live more than two hours away — but whenever she rambles back this way, as she did last week, this enduring classic is sure to make an appearance.More from MichelleFinally, if you would like to fill your Friday with little more from the one whom the late Joe Dobbs lovingly dubbed “The Chick Singer,” tune in the Michelle Channel in the free Radio Floodango music streaming service.Click here to give it a spin. Oh, Your Humble Host has an action packed Great Gildersleeve on Sounds Like Radio Volume 167 this week. It seems our hero is wanted by a desperate woman who claims Gildy is her runaway husband missing for more than a decade. Oh no, Gildy's never been married it's all a mistake. Nothing to do now but put on your running shoes. Today's show originally heard April 2, 1952. Well, I hate to see Gildy in a pickle and so do these folks who all have a word of advice: Eddy Arnold, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, Ink Spots, Kay Starr, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Jordan.
Time for Sounds Like Radio Volume 161 with Your Humble Host. Today the Great Gildersleeve from February 20, 1952 has lined up with the mayor an important job for himself. Or so he thinks, till this young college gal comes along and now the mayor has her in mind for the job, of course. Gildersleeve is now worried this new gal may find him inefficient, she's the efficiency expert don't you know. Well, I have some folks with me to calm Gildy's nerves. On hand today are Fred Astaire, Leanne Rimes, Eddy Arnold, Betty Boop, Bing Crosby, Georgia Gibbs, Nat King Cole & Kay Starr. We'll also get a bit of yodeling in with Elton Britt and a fantastic yodel song. Well, all this may not help Gildy but it sure sounds great to listen to.
"The Old Rugged Cross" has been a country gospel favorite ever since it became the title song of Ernest Tubb's 1952 gospel album; it has been performed by some of the twentieth century's most important recording artists, including Al Green, Andy Griffith, Anne Murray, Brad Paisley, Chet Atkins, Chris Barber, John Berry, Floyd Cramer, George Jones, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Kevin Max, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Jo Stafford, Gordon MacRae, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, Ricky Van Shelton, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans,[9] The Oak Ridge Boys, The Statler Brothers, Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, George Beverly Shea, James Morrison on the 1990 album "Snappy Doo", and John Prine on the 2007 album "Standard Songs for Average People" with Mac Wiseman. British television dramatist Dennis Potter used the gospel song prominently in several of his plays, most notably Pennies from Heaven (1978); and the song also played a major part in "Gridlock" (2007), an episode of the long-running sci-fi drama series Doctor Who. In early 2009, the song was covered by Ronnie Milsap on his gospel album Then Sings My Soul.

Your Humble Host is here with a Great Gildersleeve show from October 17, 1951. As Gildy does his best to remind Bronco of the anniversary of his first date with Marjorie. Who was it that wrote some of the greatest country music hits . MERLE HAGGARD, GEORGE STRAIT, GLEN CAMPBELL , PATSY CLINE, EDDY ARNOLD, BURL IVES. NO,,, it wasn't any of these great artists that wrote their smash hits. It was one of the most prolific songwriters ever. HANK COCHRAN was the man that wrote all the hits by these artists I'm playing for you on this episode. And these are just the country artists that cut his songs. It's hard to believe that one person could write such a diverse number of songs that became hits and these are just a few. Enjoy them my friends and think back to where you were and what you were doing when you first heard them.
Who better to present different ways to say I Love You, or for that matter just to sing about the different sides of love. Listen to RANDY TRAVIS, EDDY ARNOLD, HANK WILLIAMS. PATSY CLINE , JIM ED BROWN, RAY PRICE and DOLLY PARTON as they present their smash hits all about love. Even GEORGE JONES & BUCK OWENS did a duet about it. Much more my friends. Have a loving day. Life is good.
Mickey Newbury was born Milton Sims Newbury Jr. in Houston Texas, May 19, 1940 to Maime and Milton Newbury. As a child, he was inseparable from younger brother, Jerry; a friendship that continued throughout his life. In high school, Mickey decided to write songs. As a teenager, he shut himself up in his room, writing poetry and learning to play guitar. He organized a doo-wop group called The Embers. In 1959, Mickey joined the Air Force and was assigned to England for three years. When he returned to the United States, he pursued his dream of being a songwriter. He lived in a '54 Pontiac and traveled around Texas, Tennessee, and Louisiana playing gigs and working on shrimp boats. Eventually he found himself in Nashville, and in 1964, signed a publishing contract with Acuff-Rose. He moved to Nashville in 1965 and about this time, his first child Joe was born. Shortly thereafter, Jimmy Elledge was first to cover a Newbury song, Just as Long as that Someone is You.1966 was the year the music industry noticed Mickey Newbury. Don Gibson had a Top Ten Country hit with Newbury's Funny Familiar Forgotten Feelings, while Tom Jones scored a world hit with the same song. In 1968, Mickey saw huge success; three number one songs and one number five – across four different charts; Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) on the Pop/Rock chart by the First Edition, SweetMemories on Easy Listening by Andy Williams, Time is a Thief on the R&B chart by Solomon Burke, and Here Comes the Rain Baby on the Country chart by Eddy Arnold. This feat has not been repeated. That year, Mickey's first album, Harlequin Melodies, was released by RCA.Mickey met New Christy Minstrel member Susan Pack on a blind date in 1967 and would not see her again until 1969. Soon thereafter, they were married and living on a houseboat on Old Hickory Lake outside of Nashville. Over the next four years, Mickey released three albums that raised the bar on Music Row. Produced at Cinderella Studios outside of Nashville, and utilizing Nashville's best musicians, Newbury's trilogy of albums - Looks Like Rain, Frisco Mabel Joy and Heaven Help The Child are often referred to as masterpieces.Following the birth of their first child, Chris, in 1973, the Newburys moved to Oregon, to Susan's home town, just down the street from her parents, to raise their family. A daughter, Leah, followed in 1977. In 1980, Mickey was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame.During the 80s, Mickey took a break from the music business to concentrate on his growing family and golf. Stephen joined the family in 1983 and Laura was born in 1986. In the early 90's, he started writing, recording, and performing again, encouraged by his friends Bob Rosemurgy, Marty Hall, and Owsley Mannier. In 1995, Mickey's health began to fail, but he continued to produce beautiful music. 1995 to 2002 were some of his most productive years, during which time he almost doubled his catalogue. He also directed his attention to other ventures, beginning work on children's books based on his story-songs. On September 29, 2002 he succumbed to a long time lung disease and passed away in his sleep at home in Springfield, Oregon.Mickey Newbury's songs have been covered by hundreds upon hundreds of artists; over 1,000 covers have been documented. Mickey also recorded 25 albums over 35 years. Though he considered himself a songwriter first and singer second, his own albums are critically acclaimed and highly desired by a very passionate fan base the world over. Many consider him to be the best of the best. Kris Kristofferson says, “God, I learned more about songwriting from

On Sounds Like Radio Volume 135 the Great Gildersleeve is beginning to wonder if Marjorie & Bronco want to move out to be on their own with the twins? Are Marjorie and Bronco just staying because they don't want Gildy to be lonely? OR could all of this be in Gildersleeve's own imaginiation? Well, Your Humble Host knows a problem when he hears it and of course has just the right people to consult. With us today to help poor old Gildy sort this whole thing out are Dusty Springfield (pictured with this week's show), Eddy Arnold, Gale Storm, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and those multi-track recording pioneers Les Paul & Mary Ford in a special stereo version of their biggie. Nearly 50 years ago, Chuck Corbisiero and Bill Cushing grew up across the street from each other. Now the two have gotten together to present a show consisting of Bill's poetry and Chuck's musical musings. The two reconnected at the end of 2015 when Bill presented a reading commemorating his publication in an anthology called Stories of Music. Now their mutual love of music has brought them together to offer a unique look at the world through the marriage of music and writing that the two have called “Notes and Letters.” Bill, an MFA graduate from Goddard College in Vermont, has lived in the Los Angeles area for 20 years and teaches English at area community colleges, has been publishing professionally since 1987 and began poetry as a serious avocation two years later. Chuck, a guitarist who plays Jazz, Blues, Brazilian and various other musical genres, earned his B.F.A. in Musical Performance and Arranging at the City University of New York - The City College during Gil Evans' tenure as Artist in Residence from 1982 to 1983, also plays stand-up bass and worked as Eddy Arnold's guitarist until 1992. He moved to the area in 1991when he began his family. Now their mutual love of music has brought them together to offer a unique look at the world through the marriage of music and writing called “Notes and Letters.” Last March, the two performed during the open mic segment of the Second Sunday Poetry Series held at the Studio Theatre in Los Angeles. Based on that, they have secured their first stand-alone show, which will be held at the Bolton Hall Museum on the afternoon of Sunday, July 24 and is being sponsored by the Village Poets of Sunland; Tujunga. Back together again—for the first time, and available “We'd actually like to put on some events before that date,” Bill said, noting that although they are working on several promotional ideas and projects, there is no hard-and-fast schedule they have to meet. “We are playing it by ear—much like we do our own presentation. We aren't locked into any solidly rigid structure, and even the performances are ‘informal' to a great degree, which is by design.” The two have culled together poems that touch on topics as varied as nature, the city, religion, Peru, and Puerto Rico as well as music itself. Two items on their to-do list already completed are the publication of a short chapbook of the material to be used and the opening of a Facebook page dedicated to posting information as well as prior performances. Both items are similarly named “Notes and Letters.” The book is available online through either Amazon or Lulu Publishing. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lisa-tomey/message

This episode of The Howard Miller Show aired on CBS Radio February 15, 1957 and features an interview with Richard Edward Arnold (May 15, 1918 – May 8, 2008). Eddy Arnold was an American country music singer who performed for six decades. He was a Nashville sound (country/popular music) innovator of the late 1950s, and scored 147 songs on the Billboard country music charts, second only to George Jones. He sold more than 85 million records. A member of the Grand Ole Opry (beginning 1943) and the Country Music Hall of Fame (beginning 1966), Arnold ranked 22nd on Country Music Television's 2003 list of "The 40 Greatest Men of Country Music."

Gurdip returns just in time to cover the winning subject of our Patreon poll: the impact and our memories of the 1992 box set "The King of Rock and Roll: The Complete 50s Masters." As the centerpiece of the early "Elvis in the 90s" campaign run by BMG, The 50s Masters set, once described by Rolling Stone as a "Rosetta Stone of rock," was hugely formative in many Gen-X & millenial fans' appreciation for Elvis's music, and fun is had between Justin and Gurdip reminiscing about the set. For Song of the Week, like a Mississippi bullfrog sitting on a hollow stump, Gurdip doesn't know which way to jump after being out of the water so long, so he loosens up with "Flip, Flop and Fly," the spiritual sequel to Big Joe Turner's "Shake Rattle and Roll" that Elvis mashed up on his first TV appearance in 1955. Then, Justin takes a closer look at the history of arguably the best song from 1967's Clambake, "You Don't Know Me," and its famed country songwriter, Cindy Walker, who took an idea from Eddy Arnold and crafted an iconic standard. The year was 1955. Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock blasted off and just around the corner on the charts was Elvis who had a minor hit in 1954 that made some waves with That's Alright, Mama and Good Rockin' Tonight. RCA bought his contract from Sun Records for $35K. The minimum wage reached new heights of $1.00 per hour. The Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in the World Series. The Honeymooners and Gunsmoke debuted on television. And we'll be digging through the top ten charts of country, rhythm & blues, and pop in a year where the Cold War was a fact of life leading us to duck and cover. Tune in for some Webb Pierce, Eddy Arnold, Four Aces, Mitch Miller, Fats Domino, and Chuck Berry this week on our show that browses those dusty digital bins on a weekly basis on Community Radio here in Sonoma County.
Episode 19 of The Hitstreak, a podcast where we talk about anything and everything! This week we talk with Charlie Monk, The Mayor of Music Row, about the art behind networking, how to self-promote, and the true power of authenticity, in music, but also in business.Let us know in the comments what YOU want to hear about next! About our Guest: Charlie Monk, also known as “The Mayor of Music Row”, is well known for his contribution to the Country Radio and Country Music industry. Charlie founded Country Radio Seminar in 1969. The Monk Family Music Group was named ‘Publisher of the Year' in 1998. Monk received the ‘Joe Talbot Award' from the Country Music Association in 2021, which honors “exceptional leadership and dedication to the preservation and promotion of Country Music's values and traditions." His birthplace of Geneva, AL recognized him by naming a section of Westville Ave as ‘Charlie Monk Lane.' And in 2014 Charlie was inducted into the ‘Alabama Music Hall of Fame.' Charlie is an active member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Gospel Music Association, Academy of Country Music, Nashville Songwriters Association and the Country Music Association. After beginning his broadcast career in several Alabama markets, Charlie headed to the Music City, Nashville, in 1968 for a broadcasting job. Upon arrival he had some songwriting success co-writing songs with Keith Stegall, Jim McBride, Charley Pride, Eddy Arnold, Jerry Reed, Jimmy Dean, and Pat Boone. Three very notable artists that Charlie fostered are Randy Travis, Kenny Chesney and Aaron Tippin, who all have become major Country Music artists. Charlie continued to work in the Country Music industry in several capacities for Acuff Rose Music Publishing and ASCAP until finally he focused on his own company, 'Monk Family Music Group,' where many songwriters and artist careers were born and developed. In recent years Charlie was hired by SiriusXM as a consultant to help develop music industry connections. But Charlie's talent as a broadcaster lead him to begin work as the host of Willie's Roadhouse, a radio satellite channel under Sirius XM Radio station. Until very recently, Charlie's broadcasts could be heard seven days a week. He's finally cut back to two days per week but Charlie's unmistakable radio voice can still be heard on Willie's Roadhouse. Charlie is married to his wife Royce, and they have four children and many grand children. Follow and contact: SiriusXM - Willie's Roadhouse
