Welcome to Autumn-ish Book Club! In this flash analysis series, we take an academic approach to some of the most talked-about books in Romantasy and fantasy today. With over 13 years of combined academic literary training, we bring a critical lens to fandom favorites while keeping the discussion fun, thought-provoking, and accessible. In this episode, we're discussing Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang. We explore how Wang deconstructs the idea of power and morality in dark academia fantasy, using her world of magic, empire, and forbidden knowledge to question who deserves to wield control, and at what cost. We analyze how the novel's complex relationship between science and sorcery blurs the line between progress and corruption, and how Wang's morally gray characters challenge traditional Romantasy archetypes. We also unpack the book's themes of institutional rot, ambition, and rebellion, and why Blood Over Bright Haven has become one of the most talked-about fantasy novels of the year. This season, we'll be covering: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins A Cruel Thirst by Angela Montoya When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker Where the Shadows Meet by Patrice Caldwell Blood of Hercules by Jasmin Mas Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem And when book club wraps up, get ready! Our next full literary analysis will dive into Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas. If you're new here, we also have full seasons analyzing A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Frost and Starlight, House of Earth and Blood, House of Sky and Breath, Throne of Glass, and Crown of Midnight. Go back and check those out to see how we break down metaphors, symbolism, narrative structure, and character arcs through multiple literary lenses. Plus, we're thrilled to announce our newest venture: The Subtext Society Journal—the first of its kind, dedicated to Romance, Romantasy, and fandom with an academic yet accessible voice. We're publishing original essays and thought pieces, and we encourage listeners to submit their own articles for a chance to be featured. If you love Sarah J. Maas, M.L. Wang, and deep Romantasy analysis, you're in the right place. The Hoover History Lab held Thinking Historically: A Guide to Statecraft and Strategy, a book talk with the author, Francis J. Gavin on Thursday, October 02, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. PT in the Shultz Auditorium, George P. Shultz Building. It seems obvious that we should use history to improve policy. If we have a good understanding of the past, it should enable better decisions in the present, especially in the extraordinarily consequential worlds of statecraft and strategy. But how do we gain that knowledge? How should history be used? Sadly, it is rarely done well, and historians and decision-makers seldom interact. But in this remarkable book, Francis J. Gavin explains the many ways historical knowledge can help us understand and navigate the complex, often confusing world around us. Good historical work convincingly captures the challenges and complexities the decisionmaker faces. At its most useful, history is less a narrowly defined field of study than a practice, a mental awareness, a discernment, and a responsiveness to the past and how it unfolded into our present world—a discipline in the best sense of the word. Gavin demonstrates how a historical sensibility helps us to appreciate the unexpected; complicates our assumptions; makes the unfamiliar familiar and the familiar unfamiliar; and requires us, without entirely suspending moral judgment, to try to understand others on their own terms. This book is a powerful argument for thinking historically as a way for readers to apply wisdom in encountering what is foreign to them. FEATURING Francis J. Gavin is the Giovanni Agnelli Distinguished Professor and the director of the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at Johns Hopkins SAIS. Previously, he was the first Frank Stanton Chair in Nuclear Security Policy Studies at MIT and the Tom Slick Professor of International Affairs and the Director of the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law at the University of Texas. From 2005 until 2010, he directed The American Assembly's multiyear, national initiative, The Next Generation Project: U.S. Global Policy and the Future of International Institutions. He is the founding Chair of the Board of Editors for the Texas National Security Journal. Gavin's writings include Gold, Dollars, and Power: The Politics of International Monetary Relations, 1958-1971; Nuclear Statecraft: History and Strategy in America's Atomic Age ; and Nuclear Weapons and American Grand Strategy (Brookings Institution Press), which was named a 2020 Choice Outstanding Academic Title. His IISS-Adelphi book, The Taming of Scarcity and the Problems of Plenty: Rethinking International Relations and American Grand Strategy in a New Era was published in 2024. In 2025, he published Wonder and Worry: Contemporary History in an Age of Uncertainty with Stolpe Press, 2025 and Thinking Historically – A Guide to Statecraft and Strategy with Yale University Press. MODERATED BY Stephen Kotkin is director of the Hoover History Lab, Kleinheinz Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and senior fellow at Stanford's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He has been conducting research in the Hoover Library & Archives for more than three decades.
Robin Pearson is one busy woman, as you'll quickly learn in today's episode of Book Talk. An author who writes in North Carolina, she incorporates her southern roots into her stories. In our conversation, we got to talk about our shared love of bookstores and dream of owning one... for her that led to her latest novel, The Stories We Carry, which focuses on a woman working in a bookstore and confronting more than the stories on her shelves. There are layers inspired by the Count of Monte Cristo and the idea of can there be righteous Vengeance. Robin loves to think of her stories as syrup — they develop slowly and are filling. There's so much life in this interview. In this episode of Book Talk, I interview Ash Clifton, a debut author from Gainesville, Florida, about his intense thriller, Twice The Trouble. I like to compare this novel to works by Michael Cane, Tom Clancy, and Daniel Silva. Ash shares his journey of becoming a writer, inspired by his father's role as Chief of Police and Ash's exposure to former football players on his college team. He discusses the creation of his complex protagonist, a former cop and football player. Ash also talks about the challenges he faced, including cutting characters and scenes based on his agent's recommendations, and how he managed to keep the story engaging. He emphasizes the importance of a hero being both good at heart and having a sense of humor. Additional topics include the writing process, dealing with self-doubt, and his aspirations for a movie adaptation of the book.Connect with Ash CliftonX | Facebook | Instagram | BlueSkyWant to watch this interview? In today's episode of Book Talk, I have the pleasure of bringing my friend Kelly Goshorn onto the show to talk about her latest novel The Undercover Heiress of Brockton. I loved writing in a novella collection with Kelly a couple years ago, so I loved getting the chance to read this full-length novel. It's set in the very real events that happened when a shoe factory in Brockton exploded and the ensuing fire devastated the plant in mere minutes. I was fascinated to talk with Kelly about how she created her story around these very real, historical happenings.Lest you think this book is all heaviness, the heroine is an heiress who goes undercover as a man so she can report on the day's important events. That leads to all kinds of madcap events and happenings. Kelly's a pantser, so the way these true events and a couple characters wove together into this moving story is fascinating to me. I know you'll enjoy meeting Kelly and learning more about her books and her writing process.Connect with Kelly GoshornFacebook | InstagramWant to watch this interview? I have known Kim Duffy (also writing as Kimberly Duffy) for several years, and it was past time to have her on as a guest. She is someone I love brainstorming with and spending time with because she's wicked smart and has this wry sense of humor I enjoy. She also loves to travel and homeschools her kids, so there are so many points of intersection even as we are so different. While I love her historical women's fiction novels, I had her on Book Talk to share about her latest novel, The Meet-Cute Manuscript, a book she wrote when her family was in a point of crisis. She wasn't sure she'd ever be able to write again, and her agent gave her beautiful advice: write something entirely different. The Meet Cute Manuscript is the result. I loved this contemporary rom-com, which has depth but is also light and a breath of fresh air. I think we've all had times where we wonder where God is and if a dream has died. There is such beauty in finding His hand in a pivot.I really hope you enjoy meeting Kim and learning more about all of her books.Connect with Kim DuffyFacebook | Instagram

The first time money breaks something you love, it doesn't sound like coins; it sounds like silence. In this intimate Book Talk, we sit with Heather and Douglas Boneparth—partners in marriage, parenting, and work—who wrote Money Together because they lived the gap between what couples say about money and what they can't bear to say out loud. The episode opens where most advice books don't: inside the messy, human moments—doors closing, calendars clashing, one person carrying the weight of “contribution” without a paycheck to show for it.Heather, a recovering corporate attorney turned money writer, and Douglas, a financial advisor and resident finance meme-lord, built their book as a series of love stories about money. Through real couples' narratives and their own, they show how cultural scripts, childhood histories, and unequal caregiving shape what we spend, save, hide, or fear. The chapters on “Beginnings” and “Contributions” ask harder questions than “What's your budget?”—they ask who taught you what “providing” means, whose time gets valued, and what counts as care.Money Together matters because it replaces lectures with language, and shame with doable conversation starters. It's a book for anyone craving equity at home and intimacy that can survive a bank statement—an invitation to stop performing the relationship and start living it. If you're in a season of transition—new baby, job loss, divorce contemplation, or the slow realization that something has to change—this conversation offers a gentle push and practical prompts to open the door, sit down, and begin again.Learn more about Money Together and buy the book: https://domoneytogether.com/Subscribe to Heather and Doug's Substack: https://www.readthejointaccount.com/
For today's episode of Book Talk, it's a treat to welcome Kristen Hogrefe Parnell back. Kristen writes page-turning romantic suspense, and her novella in Truth started with a what-if when she was on vacation at Rosemary Beach. She kept adding layers until she had the plot for the book.Like many authors, Kristen has always wanted to write. If she could go back in time, she'd ask herself what if it could be wonderful? as a way to break out of the fear of what might happen. I love that idea! It's such a great way to reframe a business that is largely out of our control as writers.Connect with Kristen Hogrefe ParnellFacebook | Instagram
In this episode, we sit down with Analeigh Sbrana, author of the highly anticipated romantasy sequel Lore of the Tides. Following her breakout debut Lore of the Wilds, Sbrana returns with a story full of forbidden magic, grief, identity, and longing romance that raises the stakes for both her heroine and her world. We talk with Analeigh about: Why she chose to center Lore's journey around justice instead of revenge, setting her apart in a genre that often leans into vengeance arcs. How she approached writing Lore's grief and emotional growth after the fallout of book one. The symbolism of Lore's ink-stained hands and forbidden magic, and how it ties into themes of identity and power. Crafting a romance arc filled with longing, betrayal, and trust issues—and why the emotional risks feel just as high as the magical ones. How queerness and Black identity are seamlessly woven into her worldbuilding. The larger themes of power, oppression, and resistance that resonate with our world today. Whether you're already obsessed with Analeigh's romantasy universe or discovering her books for the first time, this conversation digs deep into the heart of her storytelling and why Lore of the Tides is a must-read for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Rebecca Yarros, and epic romantasy sagas. In this week's Crown of Midnight deep dive, we cover chapters 44–48 of Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass series, where the darkness under the glass castle closes in. Literally. With 13 years of combined academic literary training, we use two literary lenses to break down the rich symbolism, foreshadowing, metaphors, and plot devices that make these chapters some of the most pivotal in the series. Our guiding question: Why does SJM continue to tie Celaena and Dorian together through their actions and the symbolism surrounding them if they are never quite aligned? From Dorian's magic flaring as a warning in the catacombs, to a haunting monster hunt in the dark, to the revelation that the King already claimed the first Wyrdkey, this section is full of turning points. We analyze the predator/prey role reversals between Celaena and Dorian, the layered imagery of light, darkness, and thresholds, and how these moments tie into their ongoing connection. We also unpack Nehemia's cold farewell from beyond the grave, Gavin's cryptic warning, and Archer's shocking betrayal that threatens to expose Celaena's greatest secret. This episode is perfect for people who love: Throne of Glass literary analysis & character studies Romantasy with complex female leads Fate vs. free will in fantasy Wyrdkeys, Wyrdmarks & the Maasverse Dark fantasy creature battles Slow-burn alliances & betrayals Symbolism-rich worldbuilding This is Part 2 of our two-part discussion.
