Viva la radio saludos cordiales the galgo.

This week we welcome Ian MacDougal of the Lonestar indie rockers BROKEN GOLD. The band is set for its first release of new music in three years . MacDougall is a member of cult, Texan punks Riverboat Gamblers, he spent 5 years with Band Of Horses, and has been drafted into countless other punk and crust band tours. Bobby Daniel (bass) provides low-end to legendary Austin songwriter Alejandro Escovedo and Ben Lance (guitar) is part of anthemic rockers Mountain Time, while drummer Sam Rich has served stints in Del-Vipers and Black Books. While they all call Austin, TX, “home”, they've all put in their fair share of miles performing across the globe. “Spiraling” sets the stage for the Broken Gold's upcoming sophomore album Wild Eyes, which arrives on April 26th via hometown label Chicken Ranch Records. The album's name is a nod to a lyrical phrase shared both by the album track “Shambling”, as well in Thin Lizzy's “The Boys Are Back In Town”. The Thin Lizzy reference is one that always resonated with MacDougall who felt the line “guess who just got back today, them wild eyed boys that had been away” summed up the fried feeling of arriving home after weeks on tour. The collection of songs that make up Wild Eyes reach across genre boundaries to showcase the technical versatility and emotional insight that MacDougall has refined over the past two decades as he performed everywhere from punk squats to headlining mainstages at Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. The constant is the honesty and vulnerability in both MacDougall's DIY ethics and approach to music, facts that are laid bare on every note of Wild Eyes. To bring Wild Eyes to life, Broken Gold enlisted acclaimed engineer Stuart Sikes (The Walkmen, Modest Mouse, The White Stripes) to track and mix the record, while the legendary Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) provided the mastering polish.Wild Eyes will be available on limited edition vinyl on April 26th, 2024. Earnestness. Authenticity. These are the things Nashville-based guitarist Tobin Dale relates to when he considers his chosen craft as a guitarist and playing the music he loves. A true student of rock‘n'roll guitar, Dale has been at it since discovering the Beatles and subsequently picking up the guitar around age 12, growing up in Orlando. In music circles, he's become known as a go-to sideman for touring and sessions when artists are seeking the much-admired weave sound of guitars made popular by the likes of Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones and heard in the sounds of bands like The Faces, Humble Pie, the Black Crowes, Dan Baird projects and more. He first began life as a working musician in Los Angeles after following the cross-country voyage taken by one of his heroes, Tom Petty, who went from central Florida to LA. In California, he first joined the band the Nasty Souls, playing his first live show at the famed Roxy on Sunset at age 21. It was there that the likes of Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Patti Smith, Prince and more had played prior. Alcohol and drugs, of course, were ever-present in the LA music scene. In particular, booze became a particular vice when playing with Caldwell Jack & the Six Pack during a residency at the Kibitz Room. Dale had a wakeup call during an East Coast tour that helped Dale find sobriety. He ultimately moved to Nashville with the love of his life and began finding bigger opportunities through encounters with the likes of Alejandro Escovedo, through producer Julian Raymond at Big Machine Records, touring with Brock Ganyea and ultimately hooking up with the legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard. Dale's relationship with Hubbard started during his time playing on tour with Ganyea, who was opening shows for Hubbard. The iconic Texas songwriter approached Dale after a few performances and asked him to come up on stage to join him on the song “You Got to Move.” Dale asked Hubbard if he wanted, “the Fred McDowell or the Rolling Stones version.” A kinship was formed and the bond has only solidified since. It didn't hurt, of course, that Dale quickly found chemistry with Hubbard's son and bandmate Lucas—the two weaving their guitars seamlessly—and Dale continues playing with Hubbard's band today, such as his recent gigs on the Sirius XM Outlaw Country Cruise (where Dale also played with Andrew Leahey and the Homestead) and at Red Rocks in Colorado. It would seem, at just age 34, Dale is only getting started. He has a big summer ahead, touring with Tuk Smith & the Restless Hearts, picking up gigs here and there in Nashville and across the U.S. But with every consideration, Dale seemingly comes back to his fundamental tenants—particularly, authenticity. We discuss all of this and more on a terrific edition of The Load Out Music podcast with guitarist Tobin Dale. Enjoy!

Punk is a young person’s game, no doubt. Because while the counterculture spirit, tattoos, and tinnitus stay ’til death, even punk rock pioneers eventually mellow out towards “refined tastes” once they get comfortable on the other side of the hill. Melody Maker Magazine says, "Gentile's work is one of the rare examples of songwriting capable of meaning all things to all listeners." She recently released her 3rd album, THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, with her band Diane & The Gentle Men. The album is a scrapbook of vignettes featuring endearing but poetically flawed protagonists sketched with Diane's literate flair and doused in classic NYC rock n' roll swagger. It features a duet with Alejandro Escovedo, an appearance by James Maddock, and a song produced by Jesse Malin. Previously, she released THE WHITE SEA, with the classic song "Motorcycle", produced by The Dream Syndicates' Steve Wynn, which became a hit on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Diane has also worked as a record company executive, music venue manager, artist manager, and journalist. https://www.dianegentile.com/

Today's episode is a conversation I had with the wonderful Matt Jaffe. After cutting his teeth on open mics around the Bay Area, San Francisco songwriter Matt Jaffe was discovered by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads. Together, they produced his first album at the age of 16, cementing Matt's dedication to music. Soon, he formed a band, dropped out of college, and has not looked back. Since then, Matt has cowritten with Chuck Prophet and Tom Higgenson of Plain White T's, crisscrossed the country opening for Blues Traveler and Alejandro Escovedo, and recorded half a dozen albums alongside luminaries of the Bay Area music scene. Inspired by the great lineage of rock n' roll, he marries literary lyrics with the undeniable urge to dance.I sat down with Matt on November 2 of this year to talk about his music and the influence of Tom Petty's music in his life. Yet again (man, I've been lucky!) I was so lucky to be able to talk to such a warm, articulate, and genuine artist. I know you'll enjoy Matt's perspectives on everything from the whether the voice is merely an instrument to how Mike Campbell transcends mere soloing as a guitarist and not being intimidated by having Steve Ferrone play drums on his first record! Please check out Matt's website here: mattjaffemusic.com and go check out his Youtube channel here: @MattJaffeMusicDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Singer-songwriters Diane Gentile and Alejandro Escovedo seemingly could not be more different. Gentile grew up as one of eight siblings in Flushing, Queens, and every morsel of her oozes New York City in a manner that evokes memories of the famed all-female band The Runaways. While Gentile cut her teeth in the music business as a club booker in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Escovedo—the son of a Mexican immigrant who grew up in Texas—was living the life of a classic, nomadic troubadour. Yet, there were always connections. Mutual friends, moments where they occupied the same spaces. Eventually, they would meet and form a kinship. Together, Gentile and Escovedo joined me on a recent episode of The Load Out music podcast to discuss a new collaboration.

Although his prevalence on our playlists isn't exactly what it used to be, longtime KUTX listeners know that historically our airwaves were all about Alejandro Escovedo. Aside from his ongoing bromance with KUTX host Jody Denberg, this San Antonio native has continued to represent a Central Texas sound across Austin, Dallas, and beyond, leaving an idiosyncratic […] The post Diane and The Gentle Men: “Walk With Me” (feat. Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today, we go back to episode 46 with legendary singer-songwriter and rock and roll hero, Alejandro Escovedo. This show was originally released on 2/14/12. Below are my original notes form the show. My guest for episode 46 is the legendary Alejandro Escovedo. When I wrote Alejandro a few months ago to see if he was interested in being a guest on my show, I was so flattered when he responded with a "yes" and that he had been listening and loved it, but that he was about to start recording and would get in touch when he was done. Well, he did. He wrote me a couple of weeks ago to see if I was ready for the interview, so I went to his place last week and we sat down and he told me the story of his life in music. Alejandro is "the real deal" not that all of my other guests aren't, Alejandro is just one of those incredibly special artists. The kind of artist you wish you were. I don't really know what else to say. I was very fortunate to sit down and get to ask everything I wanted to ask. I hope you enjoy our conversation. I did. Ciao! -JG
