In 1969, Kirchen took Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen to California and they developed a reputation as musical "outlaws" that were praised by other outlaw musicians and bands like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band.Kirchen's band "played a collection of rock 'n' roll, hard-core country, boogie and rockabilly sounds produced in a "high-octane mix" that made them a "happening" group in the San Francisco Bay area. Kirchen began to develop as guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and performer. He became known for his vocal and guitar work on such songs as "Mama Hated Diesels", "Down to Seeds and Stems Again Blues" from the band's albums, Hot Licks, Cold Steel & Truckers' Favorites and Lost in the Ozone. His live performance work was captured on the 1973 album Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas, recorded at the Armadillo World Headquarters in 1973.Kirchen's Commander Cody band broke apart in 1976 and he formed a "swing orchestra" called the Moonlighters and began a decades-long collaboration with British musician Nick Lowe. Lowe produced the Moonlighters' second album Rush Hour, and Kirchen toured with Lowe and joined him in the studio from time to time. During this period Kirchen also worked on albums with Elvis Costello, Gene Vincent, and Link Wray. Kirchen was one of the musicians that pioneered the Americana movement in the 1980s, and also with being a founding father of "twangcore," along with Dave Alvin, Wilco and Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys. Kirchen's signature sound has been dubbed "dieselbilly" and incorporates elements of country, blues, rockabilly, Western swing and boogie-woogie, laced with themes of American truck driving music. Kirchen's work in the early 1970s with Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen helped set the stage for the singers like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and other outlaw country bands with his recordings of songs like "Seeds And Stems."Kirchen is said to have "one of the most distinctive, pure-Fender Telecaster tone guitar sounds in modern music". Kirchen was named "The Titan of The Telecaster" by Guitar Player magazinefor his musical prowess on the Fender Telecaster guitar. He played a 1959 model with a maple fretboard and sunburst finish that he calls the "coal burner" and acquired in 1967 when he exchanged his Gibson SG with a stranger on a bus.He retired that guitar in the early 2010s in favor of a Telecaster with a wider neck.

To them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me. — Galatians 2:5-6 CALL OUT: Call out today to 8 Men Baptized in Big Sandy, MN. I am excited about your big step to proclaim your new life in Christ. In conflict, we have choices, don't we? There is that moment of pause where we have the option to confront or dismiss. For example, I can recount many moments in "discussions" with my wife when I have a split second to decide whether I confront a particular issue or let it go. The issue is discerning which battle to fight and how vigorously I want to fight it. Have you been here? Maybe you're in the middle of a moment just like this today. This is the same decision Paul had to make regarding this issue. He had to make a choice. Was he going to dismiss the issue and build stronger alliances and allegiances with the influential leaders in the Jerusalem church and the originating apostles? Or was the matter at hand worth confronting and critical to stand against? In this case, Paul weighed the options. He weighed the threat's level, the message's value, and the importance of spiritual freedom for believers and decided that it was worth the fight and even his reputation. Therefore, he went all in. But Paul never perceived the vigor with which he would oppose the false teachers as a move to win an argument for himself. He knew what he believed and understood the Gospel message was justified by Christ and received by faith and not other addition to this Gospel. Yet he was going to fight vigorously for the faith and freedom of others because he understood that one wrong theological move would precipitate another until, one day, the Gospel was no longer the Gospel at all. In life, we will often face similar dilemmas: Ethical Dilemmas: Do we confront an ethical issue or overlook it? Conflict Dilemmas: Do we address the deeper issues or let them go? Injustice Dilemmas: Do we speak up to protect the rights of another, or do we take a pass? Authority Dilemmas: Do we challenge the actions of authorities whose policies and procedures conflict with our own? It's tough to know what to do sometimes, but if you have assessed the threat, the value of the message, prioritized freedom, and are willing to risk your reputation, then it's much easier to know when it's time to take a stand. #ConflictResolution #StandFirm #CourageousChoices #FaithfulDecisions #EthicalDilemmas ASK THIS: Reflecting on your own experiences, recall a time when you had to decide whether to confront a difficult situation or let it go. How did you approach that decision, and what were the outcomes? Consider a current conflict or ethical dilemma you're facing. How can the principles discussed in this devotional guide your decision-making process? What steps can you take to ensure that your response aligns with your values and priorities? DO THIS: Assess, value, prioritize, and risk it. PRAY THIS: God, grant me the wisdom to discern when to stand firm in confronting conflicts and when to extend grace in letting them go, all while prioritizing the values of truth, justice, and love in my actions. Amen. PLAY THIS: I Will Trust You.

Jennifer Hyatte had a very difficult upbringing with her first ever memory being in a courthouse as her mom and dad divorced. In Emory County, Utah Jennifer and her sister were put through a difficult custody battle. Her father quickly remarried and his two young daughters weren't present for the wedding, which ultimately caused friction. There isn't a lot of information on Jennifer's early life, but she did describe her life in a 34 page manifest. After her parents divorced and her father remarried, Jennifer says she and her sister were sexually abused by someone in her fathers new family which went on for four years. They never told anyone. Jennifer found solace in horses. Her aunt owned several horse stables and that's where Jennifer fell in love with a thoroughbred horse named, Weaver. Unfortunately she only got to heal with Weaver for a short while, before the horse had moved to a new stable. “Well that's it, I backed away from horses for good” Jennifer writes. At 15 her attention turned to alcohol, drugs and dating older men. Her boyfriend was 25 and she was a 15 year old child. While staying between her mom and her dad, she learned how to sneak out and cover her tracks. Jennifer would sneak out of her mom's house and take her car and learned how to change the odometer on her mom's car. The summer before her senior year, in Utah, she met her first husband. She wrote a day before the wedding, at 3 months pregnant and 18 years old, she found him with another woman. She went on with the wedding and they would later welcome 3 children together, 2 sons and a daughter. Jennifer says the marriage was abusive at times and drugs were being used in the household. In 1996 she remembers her first taste on cocaine. “I was hooked.” She also writes that after she tried it once, she needed more and even described being sold off when she and her husband didn't have money to support their habit. She then went on a six month binge, which ended when she came home one night and her children didn't even recognize her. By 1999 Jennifer's husband was arrest twice for drug charges, including a meth lab in the couples 3 bedroom home and DUI in the forth degree all within a 2 week span. With her husband going away she felt lost with “no self esteem, no character and no substance,” she wrote. She moved on in her life with a large man who was nice and a bit of a push over. They quickly married and Jennifer says 30 minutes after she said “I do” she met a friend of the groom at the reception named Travis. She was smitten and the two quickly began an intense affair even sneaking off to casino vacations. Even after Jennifer's second husband found out, the two continued the affair. Her second husband then filed for divorce and Travis quickly moved in. That quickly fizzled out quick due to the fact that “Travis was too much of a kid himself and me with 3 kids it wasn't working out” Jennifer wrote. Jennifer needed a vacation so she decided to visit her friend Tina in good old Music City, Tennessee. She fell in love with Tennessee and eventually decided she wanted to live in Tennessee. In 2001 she and her 3 children packed up and moved to Big Sandy, west of Nashville near Land between the Lakes (check out our episode on Carla Atkins and Vickie Stout). In 2004 she started a job as a nurse at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee. That's where she would meet her third husband. She fell in love with inmate George Hyatte.  George was a seasoned prisoner. At 17 he had already been through drug and alcohol counseling. He escaped between 2-5 times, including once when George and another inmate used a knife made from a toothbrush and was able to escape. Jennifer was caught giving George extra food and special attention. She waSupport the show

Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

As we make our approach to 100 episodes we begin our tribute series to the coaches who made a difference in Kovo's life as a young man. What better place to start than the man who so impacted Coach Kovo's while serving as the Head Football Coach of the Austin College Kangaroos in Sherman, TX. He never left his beloved Austin College and is now the Director of Athletics and Kinesiology Department Chair - welcome David Norman to the show! - Growing up in the East Texas town of Big Sandy as the Head Coach's son and bearing witness to his father leading the 1st ever integrated football team in Big Sandy history. A job he did so well that not only did it lead to state championship rings, but an eventual run to the town mayorship! - Coach is our 1st ever alumnus to win championships in THREE different capacities! 1st as a football player at Big Sandy, then our 1st collegiate champion as he was a member of the iconic 1981 NAIA National Championship football team at Austin College, and finally he even won one as a coach when he was a part of the Denison Yellowjacket 1984 State Championship team!!  - Save for the stint at Denison and very early coaching experience at the current State Champion Gunter Tigers, it's been all AC since 1989! Most people think of David Norman, Head Football Coach, but what not a lot of people may know is he was also one heck of a baseball coach for the Kangaroos! - Coach Norman beautifully puts things in perspective about the power of athletics when he shared the story of how at the 10-year reunion of the 1981 National Championship team they put the game film on and were hanging on every play reliving the memory of that game. By 20 years, the game was going in the background but the players were more focused on remembering the funny things like the long bus trip to Sul Ross University, all things that happen to all teams and that would have happened even without that championship. The year was 1953, and excitement buzzed through the air as whispers of a revolutionary new sound known as rock and roll spread like wildfire. The anticipation reached its peak when the lights dimmed, and Bill Haley and his Comets took the stage. As the first notes of "Crazy, Man, Crazy" echoed through the venue, the teenagers were spellbound. The infectious rhythm swept through the crowd, and for the first time, they witnessed a musical rebellion that spoke to their youthful spirits. The thumping beat and Haley's electrifying performance ignited a spark of rebellion and freedom in the hearts of those teenagers.Includes tracks by: Big Joe Turner, The Five Dollars, Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Trio, LaVern Baker, John Leyton, and much more.  Join me on my Patreon page at patreon.com/radioblivion Blow Yer Radio Up, Baby!! On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two guys who've been friends a long time, but recently formed a new project together. Oh, and one of them happens to be the bassist in a little band called Pearl Jam: It's Jeff Ament and John Wicks. Now Jeff Ament you've surely heard of, since he's a founding member of one of rock's biggest and most reliable acts, Pearl Jam, who've been going strong and steady since the early 1990s. That band released their latest album, Gigaton, right when the pandemic first hit us, so it scuttled some touring plans, but Pearl Jam is back out on the road this fall. Ament has always been a musical seeker beyond his main gig, though, experimenting both with solo records and side projects over the years. He's also an accomplished visual artist. Not only is Ament the hand behind Pearl Jam's iconic stickman logo, but he's also an incredible painter and poster artist. John Wicks is an accomplished drummer probably best known as a founding member of the band Fitz & The Tantrums, though he's also loaned his skills to the likes of Bruno Mars and Cee Lo Green. He teamed up with his old friend Ament to make the music for a TV series called Under the Banner of Heaven, and then the pandemic allowed them time to start an entirely new project that they've dubbed Deaf Charlie. Their debut album under the name is called Catastrophic Metamorphic, and it's a weird, fun, occasionally dark set of psychedelic pop that's also fully engaging. Ament sings lead on most of the songs, which is new for him. Check out “We are Doing It” right here. The chat you're about to hear took place the day after Deaf Charlie's first rehearsal as a full band; even though Wicks and Ament never really intended to play these songs live, plans changed and they'll be making their live debut at the Ohana Festival in early October. Both of these guys live in Montana now, and they chat about Ament's upbringing in small town Big Sandy, Wicks' recent job as a professor at the University of Montana, how originality is often discovered through mistakes, and the unparalleled joy of finding yourself inside the music—or other art—that you're making. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jeff Ament and John Wicks for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. (Hollywood, CA) On June 13, 2023, the classic American radio show gets a modern twist, as TV, Broadway and Rock stars join forces for the new musical: A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST. Non-profit radio theatre company OPEN-DOOR PLAYHOUSE -- a 501c3 giving voice to new writers and actors -- proudly premieres this show, sponsored in part byShure Audio International and produced by Stage For A New Age (in cooperation with We Make Movies Productions). A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST is the tale of a microphone, a meteorite and true love that transcends time! The story is set in a combination drive in/diner in Sylacauga, Alabama that famously shows the worst sci-fi movies ever made and boasts a small piece of a meteorite that historically fell on Anne Hodges in 1954. When Gabby's best friend Mo brings her Hollywood band The Flutterbyes to town, they plug in a vintage microphone once used by Elvis that mysteriously opens a wormhole in space and transports the cast back in time. Will Gabby learn hidden secrets of her family's past? Will Mo find love at first sight? How will Gabby, Mo and The Flutterbyes find their way back home to 2023? How did real life suddenly become another bad sci-fi movie? Running just under 90 minutes, A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST, is divided into four episodes (with ridiculous commercials) to allow fans to listen wherever and whenever they can.THE CAST:• Comedy greats Dave Foley (KIDS IN THE HALL, NEWS RADIO, YOUNG SHELDON) and Gary Anthony Williams (RENO 911,  THE OUTLAW JOHNNY BLACK, BOONDOCKS);• TV bad boy/hearthrob Antonio Jaramillo (MAYANS M.C., SHADES OF BLUE);• Broadway actresses Crissy Guerrero (IN THE HEIGHTS), Kacee Clanton (A NIGHT WITH JANIS) and Maureen Davis (INTO THE WOODS)• LA theatre royalty, Aaron Lyons (PULP SHAKESPEARE);• Newly-infamous all girl, all star sextet THE FLUTTERBYES (Maureen Davis, Sonia Sanchez, Claire Gohst, Paula Keane,Emi Desire, Roni Lee) whose collective concert credits include DICK DALE, BERLIN, VAN HALEN, JOAN JETT, BIG BADVOODOO DADDY, DEKE DICKERSON, JAMES INTVELD and BIG SANDY.A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST was recorded at Studiopolis in Los Angeles by acclaimed voiceover engineerBryan Showalter and veteran voiceover artist and director Richard Malmos. Custom Foley sound effects were created by Jeffrey Gardner (The Kennedy Center, LA Theatreworks and Cecily Strong's lauded "Search For Sign's of Intelligent Life" at the Center Theatre Group).Dave Rodgers cowrote the script with Davis. Rodgers -- assistant to Anne Bancroft and now Mel Brooks -- also collaborated on the musical “Valley of Kings,” with Dan Studney and Kevin Murphy (author of REEFER MADNESS and HEATHERS musicals). The soundtrack is comprised of several songs released by three bands fronted by Davis: the afore-mentioned THE FLUTTERBYES; Alt Country Outlaws THE FLUTTERBIES; and Rockabilly Darlings MAUREEN & THE MERCURY 5.
