This edition of the DBG Times covers a wide range of rock and metal history, along with notable Rockstar Deathdays honoring Phil Lynott, Neil Peart, Steve Clark, Eddie Clarke, Sylvain Sylvain, and John Sykes. Looking back 10 years to 2016, the show revisits releases from Black Sabbath and Megadeth, including Sabbath's final studio-era material and Megadeth's well-received return to a heavier, more classic sound. From 2001, we highlight Turn 21 by The Donnas, an album that helped solidify their identity and garner more recognition. Going back 30 years to 1996, the discussion includes albums from Accept and Mr. Big, reflecting a challenging era as traditional hard rock and metal faced shifting trends. At 35 years (1991), we touch on notable releases by David Lee Roth, Drivin' N Cryin', and Motörhead, showcasing the variety of sounds coming out of the early '90s. Looking at 1986, we revisit Seventh Star by Black Sabbath and the long-delayed debut of White Lion, two releases with very different paths and outcomes. From 1981, the episode covers peak-era albums by 38 Special, April Wine, and Styx, all enjoying major commercial success during this period. Jumping back 50 years to 1976, we discuss releases from Bad Company and Grand Funk Railroad, each facing internal and external challenges at different points in their careers. Wrapping up the historical portion at 55 years (1971), we explore early albums from ZZ Top, Mountain, Lucifer's Friend, and Dust, capturing the formative years of heavy rock and metal. The episode also includes a rundown of new rock and metal releases, featuring recent albums from Alter Bridge, Bullet, Kreator, Gluecifer, Helix, and a final studio release tied to the farewell era of Megadeth. We hope you enjoy our look back through the month of January in this edition of the DBG Times and SHARE with a friend. Decibel Geek is a proud member of the Pantheon Podcast family. Contact Us! Click here to share your favorite car, car story or any automotive trivia!"You make money on the buy." That's the philosophy that took Ivan Katz from a $900 1970 Chevelle Malibu convertible to a 29-car collection — and why he says "eventually, things own you."In this episode, Drivin' Ivan shares how growing up in his grandfather's car radio shop in Alexandria shaped his obsession with cars that handle. Why his first Lancia Zagato ended in the worst car fire the local fire department had ever seen — and why he came back for another one. How he compares his 1978 Porsche 928 to a "German Corvette" while the actual C3 "should be ashamed." And the unexpected way that Chevelle became his "Ferrari fund."*** BONUS - We have partnered with Drivin' Ivan for car reviews - his first is a full YouTube Car Review of Doug's 1981 DeLorean DMC-12: https://youtu.be/Vyy-gqAXC20?si=7PL5iO-kPNpsw4EiFrom air-cooled Porsches to obscure Italian sports cars to imports nobody in America recognizes, Ivan holds nothing back on what it really costs — in time, money, and sanity — to maintain a fleet this size.

Only Three Lads: Pearl E. Gates / Pearl Harbor & The Explosions - Top 5 New Wave Artists

This week, Pearl E. Gates (aka Pearl Harbour) from Bay Area new wave faves Pearl Harbor & The Explosions gives us a glimpse of some of the artists of the era who had the biggest impact on her. Along the way, Pearl shares her fascinating story: a military brat growing up in Germany who makes her way to San Francisco with a plane ticket and $75, joins The Tubes as a backup singer and dancer, which led to joining Leila and the Snakes before spinning off to form Pearl Harbor & The Explosions. After the moderate success of their single "Drivin'" for indie label 415 Records, the band was signed to Warner Bros. Records for their self-titled debut album, released in January 1980. It's a dynamic record that mixes new wave energy with pop, R&B, rockabilly, and jazz. They shared stages with the likes of Talking Heads, The Police, The Clash, and The B-52's. Differences in opinion regarding the Explosions' musical direction led to Pearl departing for England, where she recorded her rootsy, rockin' 1980 solo album Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Too, with a dream band including Wilko Johnson from Dr. Feelgood and members of the Blockheads and the Clash. In fact, in the '80s, Pearl was married to Clash bassist Paul Simonon. She also takes us through her rare mid-'80s album that never saw a U.S. release (Pearls Galore), her blazing '90s set Here Comes Trouble, and how her countrified return was sidelined by a lung cancer diagnosis. Now thankfully in remission, we are blessed to have this living icon of new wave history share her story. Oh, and in a head-turning twist, Uncle Gregg tackles the one question that nobody else has dared to ask! Liberation Hall has just released an expanded edition of Pearl Harbor & The Explosions on opaque sky-blue vinyl, CD and digital, containing bonus tracks and the original UK album cover design. https://pearlharbortheexplosions.bandcamp.com/album/pearl-harbor-the-explosions Special thanks to Randy Haecker from Prime Mover Media for the introduction and coordination! AthCastMusic: The Music of Athens GA, Now and Then

Today, we're talking with Rick Fowler and Mike Doke, members of Athens' finest — the Rick Fowler Band. This powerhouse blues-rock group is led by Rick Fowler, whose guitar work and songwriting are a blend of blues, rock and music that will reach into the depths of your soul, you almost fall over listening to them. Alongside him are local legends in their own right: Michael Doke on guitar, Greg Veale on bass, Tim White on Hammond organ, and Deane Quinter on drums. These guys don't just play music — they live it. They've backed icons like Beverly “Guitar” Watkins, played with members of R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Drivin' n' Cryin', Tinsley Ellis, T Graham Brown.
