Send us a textRey Roldan stops by the podcast to talk about being Britney's Publicist, Interviewing Kurt Cobain, an interesting encounter with Bono, Fandom, and so much more.********Rey has seen a lot… and I mean A LOT. Twenty-six plus years as a publicist (since 1995) and a few years before that as a nationally published entertainment journalist, he's been around. Backstage, on the tour bus, in the hotel rooms, behind closed doors, in the conference room… he's witnessed almost all… but there's undoubtedly more that he hasn't seen. But it hasn't shocked him. In fact, it's intrigued him… challenged him… and at times, offered myriad choices of how to react and how to process. And that's the thing… nothing shocks him. Starting his journey into the lion's den that is the music industry, he was a journalist for a number of newspapers, magazines, and regionals across the country (and one or two overseas). He's interviewed Kurt Cobain, U2, Joey Ramone, Sinead O'Connor, Bjork, Polly Jean Harvey… oh, and Vanilla Ice… While journalism was his passion, it didn't quite pay the bills, especially in Boston. So he moved to NYC and jumped into Publicity. IRS Records, Mammoth Records, Grass Records, Jive/Silvertone/Zomba, KSA Publicity/Press Here, Island Def Jam… He worked with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Duran Duran, Sting, Brooks & Dunn, O Brother Where Are Thou?, Juliana Hatfield, Diana Ross, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Dresden Dolls, Charlotte Church, among hundreds of others. He did the label (indie and major) and indie PR thing but he was burnt out on doing publicity like a pre-defined template that labels determined, so he left the corporate world to start his own shingle with a focus on building profiles and strategies that weren't constrained by hard, constrained blueprints. In 2004, Reybee Inc. was born. Instead of sticking to templates, he and his team of professionals craft unique strategies to build solid foundations and build up from there, creating campaigns that focus on constructing artist careers that go beyond. His campaigns go forward and sideways, and rarely backwards (unless, of course, we're talking retrospectives, which, in that case, they go backwards too).Nearly two decades later, it's still going strong… in fact, it keeps growing… and growing… and growing. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week's guest is Tom Maxwell. Back in the 90s, he was in a band you might have heard of called The Squirrel Nut Zippers – he's the songwriter behind their big hit song “Hell” and also one of my personal favorites of theirs, “Put A Lid On it.” Beyond that, he's a great storyteller who's done a lot of freelance writing work. He also wrote a highly acclaimed book, “A Really Strange and Wonderful Time: The Chapel Hill Music Scene,” which was released last year, and as over the years created new music under the moniker of Tom Maxwell and the Minor Drag. Music credits: "Trapped in the Stairwell," Blue Dot Sessions Cab Calloway - "St. James Infirmary" Lord Executor - "Seven Skeletons Found in the Yard" Tom's Website We Salted Nannie: A Real-Life Souther Ghost Story Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! Formed in 2004 The Old Ceremony has survived longer than many marriages. They've reinvented themselves again and again, beginning as an eleven-piece mini-orchestra, slimming down to a five-piece touring machine (guitar, bass, drums, vibraphone/keys, violin), and now – in their 20th year together – creating a fresh, energized record that incorporates the visceral (“Valerie Solanas”), the meditative (“North American Grain”), the philosophical (“Too Big To Fail”), and a nod back to their noir-ish beginnings (“Lonely Mayor”). Songwriter and vocalist/guitarist Django Haskins' gift for incisive, colorful lyrics and melodies is on full display throughout, whether it be an unhinged first-person tale of shooting Andy Warhol or the melancholy last act of a long-closeted politician. He writes with empathy and precision that occasionally calls to mind the source of the band's name, Leonard Cohen, among others. In fact, the songs contained in Earthbound are culled from the 115 new songs Haskins penned during the pandemic. When tossed into the well-seasoned cauldron of the band's collective musical voices, they transform from one person's songs into something else: the sound of a band that has created together for two decades, through highs and lows, busy years of touring and slow years of child-rearing and mask wearing. The Old Ceremony has seen their share of highlights: sharing bills with the Jayhawks, CAKE, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Mountain Goats, Chuck Berry, Giant Sand, and many more; touring the U.S., Canada, and Europe; building their stature in the fertile Chapel Hill/Durham scene one cinematic performance at a time. Meanwhile band leader Django Haskins in addition to participating in the Big Star tribute tours, co-wrote and recorded an album of Folk-Rock originals with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris under the name “Au Pair.” Earthbound is destined to be another highlight to add to the list, a musical recommitment ceremony among five musicians who share a life in song. With his background as a music professor, Mark takes us through the strange and often challenging journey of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, who unexpectedly scored an Alternative Radio hit with their Cab Calloway-inspired song "Hell." Though lumped into the '90s swing revival, there was something that made them stand out, and this week, we try to pinpoint exactly what that was! Bloodfalls and meat showers - phenomena that sound more like biblical plagues than historical events. Yet, reports of these bizarre occurrences peppered the American landscape for over a century. From Alabama to Massachusetts, Tennessee to California, eyewitnesses sometimes described small red clouds followed by downpours of blood, flesh, and viscera. Some were subjected to the red rain on entirely cloudless days. While many saw divine judgment, skeptics suspected elaborate hoaxes. Scientists proposed numerous theories ranging from vomiting vultures to atmospheric anomalies, while newspapers spread the stories far and wide. But what really happened during these grisly events? Were they connected or separate phenomena with similar descriptions? And why did they seem to stop abruptly at the turn of the 20th century? Join us as we delve into this bloody chapter of American history with our special guest, Tom Maxwell, former frontman of the Squirrel Nut Zippers and bloodfall expert, for Part 1 of this 2-part series. Together, we'll examine not just what fell from the sky, but what these incidents reveal about 19th-century America - its people, its science, and its struggle to make sense of a rapidly changing world. From the fringes of meteorology to the depths of human nature, this is the strange, gruesome, and utterly captivating story of America's reign of blood and meat. Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this our 256th episode, our returning guest is Tom Maxwell. You first heard Tom Maxwell on Episode 224. In the 1990s, Tom was a member of the hot jazz indie band Squirrel Nut Zippers and wrote their hit song “Hell,” which peaked at no. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and propelled the band to multi-platinum status. The Zippers were inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2021. After Tom left the Zippers, he composed for television and motion pictures. Now Tom is a writer who specializes in creative nonfiction with an emphasis on music and musicians. He has contributed to Longreads, Al Jazeera America, Salon, Slate, The Oxford American, The Bitter Southerner, Tape Op, and AARP Magazine, among others. He is a faculty member of the North Carolina Writers Guild and a contributor to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. Along with his partner Brooklyn, Tom is the creator of “Shelved,” an Audible podcast produced by Gunpowder & Sky. His first book, “Hell: My Life in the Squirrel Nut Zippers,” was published in 2014. His latest book, “A Really Strange and Wonderful Time,” a nonfiction book about the '90s Chapel Hill music scene was published by the Hachette Book Group in 2024. On this episode, Marc talks with Tom Maxwell, author of “A Really Strange and Wonderful Time: The Chapel Hill Music Scene, 1989-1999,” published in April of 2024. It's the story of a community where musicians played in each other's bands, toured with each other, produced each other's records, and supported each other's work regardless of style or pedigree. Tom also shows what it was like to be in a place where major labels descended, boosting some bands and discarding others. He experienced it first hand as a member of many NC bands, including Squirrel Nut Zippers, whose 1995 album “Hot” sold over a million copies. As Tom writes, “I want to give you a sense of what was broadly going on musically and show you the fertile soil from which all this wondrous music sprang. Because this kind of community is very much like a garden: there are the beautiful flowers, of course, which command most people's attention, but for those flowers to grow there must also be a rich diet, pollinators, earthworms, and the right amount of rain, shade, light, and decay.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Tom Maxwell!

Howie Klein has been doing a weekly segment on my show for more than a dozen years now. He and I first met some 30+ years ago on Los Angeles where I was doing (really great) music radio and he was President of Reprise Records. When Howie exited the music biz, he turned his energies toward getting real progressives elected to office. He began blogging at DownWithTyranny.com. In 2006, Howie joined forces with Heather "Digby" Parton of Digby's Hullabaloo (digbysblog.net) and John Amato of CrooksandLiars.com. They created the Blue America PAC, enlisting the help of Jacquie Propps (@Jacqrat) to help with the organizational aspects of running a PAC. Jaquie wrote "Fighting The Right Wing Since 2006" for the Blue America blog to reacquaint the blogosphere with Blue America, now in its 18th year. (Read it at https://blueamerica.crooksandliars.co...) We agreed that with the most consequential election season of our lives underway, this would be a good time to get some of the players together to recognize the work they do and shine a spotlight on this year's group of Blue America endorsed candidates. So, joining Howie and me today -- Digby, of course. And Tom Maxwell. Huh? Tom Maxwell is a musician. You probably know him from his time with the Squirrel Nut Zippers. In 2006, Tom contributed a song, "Have You Had Enough?" --sung by Rickie Lee Jones - to one of the first Blue America campaigns, that one to oust the predatory Republican Speaker of the House Denny Hastert. It was a success and the campaign was a hit. And the rest, as they say, is history! They'll all join in at around the 30 minute mark. But we'll start with some news and memories spurred by the news that OJ Simpson has died. For anyone curious, the $26.00 Roberto used to purchase this album in 2006 is equivalent to $38.93 in 2023 money. One X - Three Days Grace: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQwPvYVIiaGNTIh8WcBvvDI7fxzWye-LyHot - Squirrel Nut Zippers: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL64ioV6xIjLZPWBnqWKysQwWvdyW3LN3SMusical Candy Documentary: https://vimeo.com/100220051 Hosted on Acast. A new year brings a new series here on the OST Party! This week's film, the 1999 sci-fi rom-com Blast from the Past, marks the finale of our neo-swing trilogy, and also the beginning of our series on the films of Brendan Fraser. Blast from the Past, as Libby's husband Ian pointed out, is like if you crossed Encino Man with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And the soundtrack reflects that weird clash of tones. You've got the square 60s tunes of Perry Como, the neo-swing revival of The Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers, and modern 90s rock in acts like Everclear, Dishwalla and Sonichrome. The whole thing is a fascinating time capsule of where we were in the late-90s, and how that era is well and truly behind us. Time marches on, and so do we!

It's that holiday season once again, and Santa Mike insists we cover a slate of season-appropriate releases. Are they jazz appropriate as well? Not really, but two are jazz adjacent and one at least features an ex-Messenger, so there's that. There's also, er, Swamp Dogg. My guest for this episode, Dean Johanesen, first appeared on the podcast in July of 2018. This is his third feature on the Unstarving Musician. He has a new album called Cautionary Tales, which is out Feb 3, 2023. This date is also the anniversary of the release of King King (1933). Dean says that this release seems to fit his style perfectly with its influence of swing music ala Django Reinhardt, The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Louis Jordan etc. With a sonic palette that dips into speakeasy-era Americana, and swingin' Hot Club jazz doused in circus tent hues, the New York-native has made his home in many parts of the United States. Dean's mother delivered motor homes when he was young and the family traveled around listening to a wide range of artists. Hearing everything from Led Zeppelin to Simon and Garfunkel, classic country to Broadway Musicals. That provided the soundtrack of Dean's youth and heavily influenced Dean's interests musically. In 2013, Dean released his first solo record focused on the storyteller songwriting format. Meanwhile, a recent passion for Hot Club jazz music in the vein of Django Reinhardt put him on a musical path of telling new stories of old times. Non-fictional characters from the '20s and '30s – circus performers, the sideshow, prohibition, the war of currents (Tesla vs. Edison) all inform Dean's writing. These stories are projected against a backdrop of uptempo jazz in a style Dean has coined "Circus Swing." In this conversation we talk about mutual acquaintances, the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival, Album Artwork Development, Song Reference Files, Journals, Record Release Mode, Balancing Creative Time, The Arc Of Writing A Thematic Album, Writing Press Releases, Framework Of Release Campaign, Heightened Creativity Of Songwriters Festivals and more. "Dean is simultaneously a throwback to an era of gypsy jazz and circuses while pointing the way to what will always be timely" - Steve Huntington, Sirius/XM Radio Margaritaville You can find all things Dean Johanesen, including stories and songs from his forthcoming album, Cautionary Tales at DeanJohanesen.com. We had a real nice time catching up and I think it was a really good conversation, that I hope you will enjoy. Hey all you hepcats, this week we're listening to Squirrel Nut Zippers' 1996 album, "Hot". Join us as we talk about that unusual period of the 1990s—when a significant chunk of America was enamored with zoot suits and lindy-hop—and how Squirrel Nut Zippers sort of did and sort of did not fit into that cultural moment. Then we discuss the eclectic mix of genres and skillful performances on the album (44:20), while debating some of the problematic elements of the band's retro approach. Plus, you may find out which host holds the distinction of being the swing revival trivia champ, why Joe's microphone sounds so bad, and whether this band actually appears on the soundtrack of an Arrested Development episode.Be sure to support the artists by purchasing "Hot" on iTunes or wherever you get your music.

MoxieMoments brings you Samantha Fish, Contemporary Blues Artist-Bourbon & Beyond, on what Moxie means to her. “You should always get outside of the box,” Samantha Fish says while discussing her boundary-breaking new album Belle of the West. “Challenging yourself is how you grow.” After launching her recording career in 2009, Samantha Fish quickly established herself as a rising star in the contemporary blues world. Since then, the charismatic young singer-guitarist-songwriter has earned a reputation as a rising guitar hero and powerful live performer while releasing a series of acclaimed albums showing her restless creative spirit, consistently taking her in new and exciting musicals directions. The New York Times called Fish “an impressive blues guitarist who sings with sweet power” and “one of the genre's most promising young talents.” Her hometown paper, The Kansas City Star, noted, “Samantha Fish has kicked down the door of the patriarchal blues club” and observed that the young artist “displays more imagination and creativity than some blues veterans exhibit throughout their careers.” Having already made it clear that she's more interested in following her heart than she is in repeating past triumphs, Samantha Fish delivers some of her most compelling music to date with Belle of the West, her fifth studio album. The deeply soulful, personally charged 11-song set showcases Fish's sublime acoustic guitar skills as well as her rootsy, emotionally resonant songwriting. Such memorable new originals as “American Dream,” “Blood in the Water,” “Need You More,” and “Don't Say You Love Me” demonstrate the artist's knack for organic Americana songcraft. At the same time, a trio of cover tunes—R.L. Burnside's “Poor Black Mattie,” Lillie Mae's “Nearing Home,” and the Jimbo Mathus-penned title track—attest to her considerable interpretive skills as well as her varied musical interests. “To me, this is a natural progression,” Fish notes. “It's a storytelling record by a girl who grew up in the Midwest. It's very personal. I focused on the songwriting and vocals, the melodies and emotion, and bringing another dimension to what I do. I wasn't interested in shredding on guitar, although we ended up with a few heavier tracks. I love Mississippi blues; there's something very soulful and authentic about that style of music, so this was a chance to immerse myself in that.” Fish recorded Belle of the West in the relaxed, rural creative atmosphere of the legendary Zebra Ranch Studios in the North Hills of Mississippi with producer Luther Dickinson (of North Mississippi Allstars fame). She worked previously on her 2015 album Wild Heart. The studio team included some of the region's most iconoclastic musicians, including Dickinson, solo artist and Jack White associate Lillie Mae (whose distinctive vocals are featured on “Nearing Home”), much-traveled juke- joint blues artist Lightnin' Malcolm (whose featured on “Poor Black Mattie”), Squirrel Nut Zippers founder Jimbo Mathus, upright bassist and beloved solo artist Amy LaVere, Tikyra Jackson, Trina Raimey and Shardé Thomas, granddaughter of the legendary Southern bluesman Otha Turner. “I wanted to do this acoustic-electric record and tap into the style and swagger of Mississippi,” Fish states, adding, “Any time you dive into another place, another vibe and a new group of people, you're challenging yourself to grow musically. I felt very at home at a Zebra Ranch, and I've known Luther and Malcolm for years, so it was a very comfortable situation. When you're making a record like this, it has to feel natural if you want people to respond to it. Belle of the West follows on the heels of Fish's March 2017 release Chills & Fever, which achieved top 10 status in the Billboard Blues charts. Here she expanded her stylistic arsenal to take on a set of lesser-known vintage R&B gems, with help from members of garage-soul stalwarts the Detroit Cobras. “Having these two very different records come out back to back this year has been liberating,” says Samantha. The creative drive that fuels Belle of the West and Chills & Fever has been a crucial element of Samantha Fish's approach from the beginning. Growing up in a musical family in Kansas City, Missouri, she became obsessed with music early in life, taking up drums before switching to guitar at 15. By the time she was 20, she had formed her trio and self-released her first album. She soon caught the ear of the renowned blues label Ruf Records, which in 2011 released Girls with Guitars, which teamed her with fellow axewomen, Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde. The same year saw Ruf release Fish's solo studio debut, Runaway. The album was named Best Artist Debut at the 2012 Blues Music Awards in Memphis. Black Wind Howlin' (2013) and Wild Heart (2015) followed, winning considerable critical acclaim and further establishing Fish as a prominent presence in the blues community. Wild Heart reached the top slot on Billboard's blues chart. She also collaborated with blues-rock veterans Jimmy Hall and Reese Wynans on The Healers' 2013 project. In addition, she jammed onstage with blues icon Buddy Guy and guested on Devon Allman's album Turquoise. Fish continues to maintain the same hardworking, prolific approach that's carried her this far. “I think I've always had that,” she says. “Music is my life, so what other choice do I have but to go out and make music? We do tour quite a bit, and maybe it's kind of crazy to put out two dramatically different albums in one year. But I like to work hard. This is who I am, and this is what I do, and when I'm writing and recording and touring is when I feel the most like myself. And now we have a moment where people are paying attention, so I have to make the most of it. I feel like I have a lot to say right now, so why not say it?” Her musical future is an open road as far as Samantha Fish is concerned. “I'm never gonna be a traditional blues artist because that's not who I am,” she asserts. “But it's all the blues for me. When Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf came out, what they were doing didn't sound like anything done in blues before. So you have to keep that kind of fire and spirit. I will never do Muddy Waters better than Muddy Waters, so I have to be who I am and find my best voice.
This week on Under the Radar: New England Confectionery Company, or Necco, was the oldest continuously running candy company in the country up until its closure in 2018. The company, which was based in Revere, Massachusetts, produced Clark Bars, Mary Janes, Candy Buttons, Sky Bars, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Sweethearts, and — most notably — Necco Wafers. The New England Confectionery Company shaped the candy industry in our region and beyond, and its closure shocked sweettooths across the country. But the historic Necco candies are living on, produced by the Ohio-based Spangler Candy Company. We're talking all things candy, confections and the future of our region's sweets industry. GUEST: Darlene Lacey, an author and curator of The Candy Wrapper Museum. Her most recent books are “Necco: An Epic Candy Tale” and “Necco: The Archive Collection.”
