We have to talk about the privileges in our virtual WIND office, in the room(s) at WIND events, and within weight-inclusive spaces at large. What does it mean that many of us in this space hold so many unearned privileges (body, race, ability, etc.), and how do we act with intention and integrity once we know what those privilges mean?  Tune in to hear Heather Caplan, Kim Hoban, and Leah Tsui—of the WIND Team—explore this topic together, sharing what they've learned over the years of working within inclusive spaces and being faced with the power their identities hold.  This relatively short episode is just scratching the surface of this conversation, and we'll come back to it again and again, no doubt.  Thanks for being here for every body with us! Full transcript and show notes are available on weightinclusivenutrition.com.  WIND on Instagram: @weightinclusivenutrition WIND's Facebook Group, free and open to all providers, students, and interns.  WIND Professional Membership, for weight-inclusive providers.

It's me, your host, Heather Caplan on the finale! My friend, confidant, and now WIND Team member, Kim Hoban, joined me again to help navigate this final conversation for the RD Real Talk show!  In this episode, we talk about:  why I started the show how I put systems in place  what systems I used and how much time it took the "Return on investment" for podcasting as a non-diet dietitian what it felt like to come back to the show after my last maternity leave and why it's ending! I'm leaving the show, and wrapping up this project! But, I'm not leaving the weight-inclusive space. You'll find me at all things WIND (Weightinclusivenutritoin.com), and on Instagram @heatherdcRD. In the next few months, I'm hosting the WIND Business Brainstorm, and the WIND Business Owners Mastermind group! Find more information about those things on our newsletter: weightinclusivenutrition.com  Thank you SO MUCH for being here! Keep in touch.  Cheers,  Heather

Kim Hoban is back on the show today, an RD Real Talk OG. We both have gone through significant life changes this year, becoming new moms. Kim was on a wild ride during pregnancy, with everything from placenta previa to gestational diabetes to, our shared experience, carpal tunnel. We talk about cravings—one that brought me out of a pescetarian lifestyle (which I'm thankful for)—and what might be at the root of them. And we talk about life, because sometimes we need a break from talking about nutrition.  Things mentioned during the show:  Kim, and her daily work in being an advocate for her own health-autonomy, as well as yours. 53: IE Principle 5 - How to Feel Your Fullness

Kim Hoban, a certified Intuitive Eating (IE) counselor and good RD friend of mine, is on the show to help me cover IE principle 5. Feeling fullness isn't as, well, intuitive, as you might think. But when most people think about IE, they think it's just about "eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full." So, we finally get to chat about the second half of that assumption.  We talk about why fullness isn't introduced until you're already halfway through the 10 IE principles, and what it means to FEEL full versus satisfied. (More on that next week!) To be honest, we both see a lot of clients use fullness as an excuse to restrict their intake, or misunderstand the sensation entirely. We get real about that.  This is also a big conversation topic in the virtual course I lead for active women on combining sports nutrition and intuitive eating—fullness is something many athletes shy away from. If you want to learn more about the course, Fit Fueling, and these concepts, register for our next course here! (Starts Monday, March 5)  Questions? Reach out anytime: RDRealTalk at Gmail dot com. Emily Fonnesbeck joins me to talk about an Intuitive Eating (IE) principle that is challenging for many people—#4 how to challenge the food police.  We review the various types of Food Police that may be directing traffic in your mind on any given day–from the Ally to the Informant—and how to start distinguishing the foes from the friend. Food police may be most familiar to those who have had an eating disorder. The voices sound a lot like an example provided by Dr. Laura Hill in her TEDx talk on anorexia. Even in the absence of an eating disorder, diet culture employs food policing thoughts that influence how we eat throughout the day.  In the episode, we emphasize that restrictive eating is NOT healthy eating, and that not everyone obsesses over food. It is possible to go throughout your day without these food policing thoughts and internal debates.  Check out more of Emily's writing and work on her site: EmilyFonnesbeck.com  Next up: Kim Hoban, and principle #5: How to respect your fullness!  Questions? RD Real Talk - Registered Dietitians Keeping it Real

This week’s RD Real Talk guest is Kim Hoban, of KHNutrition.com. We met two years ago, on an almond tour in California (because sometimes RDs take trips to learn about almonds). Now, we talk almost every week. This time it happened to be recorded! In the nutrition news: A bleeding plant-based burger is one food scientist’s solution to eating less meat. We’re not totally convinced. Some other (behavioral, computer, and exercise) scientists are in a fight against health apps, and the 10,000 steps per day theory. The ideal world of eating every vegetable (and fish) you buy before it goes to waste is not the world we live in. We share some real talk about our recent food purchases and subsequent waste. It happens. (But it doesn’t have to!)
