Diets, and an obsession with weight, are so much a part of Western culture that it's hardly surprising our teens can struggle to understand how to eat well. When I researched the topic for episode 9, I discovered that many experts are using mindful - or intuitive - eating to treat patients who develop disordered eating patterns. Indeed, the Intuitive Eating Workbook, which is now in its fourth edition, is recommended on the website of the UK's premier eating disorder charity Beat.  I reached out to Elyse Resch who is co-author of that book, because she has a long list of academic and industry accreditations, and  decades of experience in dealing with eating issues. Even better, she's created The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens to help our kids at one of this vulnerable stage.   I'm delighted that she agreed to help us unpick how we are talking with our teens about this tricky subject. CONTACT ELYSE RESCH: elyseresch@gmail.comhttps://elyseresch.com/EResch/DEALING WITG EMOTIONAL EATING:https://www.helpguide.org/articles/diets/emotional-eating.htm  THE TEN PRINCIPLES OF INTUITIVE EATING:https://www.intuitiveeating.org/10-principles-of-intuitive-eating/• Reject the Diet Mentality. Throw out the diet books and magazine articles that offer you the false hope of losing weight quickly, easily, and permanently• Honour Your Hunger. Keep your body biologically fed with adequate energy and carbohydrates. Otherwise you can trigger a primal drive to overeat• Make Peace with Food. If you tell yourself that you can't or shouldn't have a particular food, it can lead to intense feelings of deprivation that build into uncontrollable cravings and, often, bingeing. • Challenge the Food Police. Scream a loud no to thoughts in your head that declare you're “good” for eating minimal calories or “bad” because you ate a piece of chocolate cake.• Discover the Satisfaction Factor. When you eat what you really want, in an environment that is inviting, the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content. • Feel Your Fullness. Pause in the middle of eating and ask yourself how the food tastes, and what your current hunger level is. • Cope with Your Emotions. Food won't fix any of these feelings. It may comfort for the short term, distract from the pain, or even numb you. But food won't solve the problem. • Respect Your Body. Accept your genetic blueprint. Just as a person with a shoe size of eight would not expect to realistically squeeze into a size six, it is equally futile (and uncomfortable) to have a similar expectation about body size. • Exercise—Feel the Difference. Shift your focus to how it feels to move your body, rather than the calorie-burning effect of exercise.• Honour Your Health with Gentle Nutrition. Remember that you don't have to eat perfectly to be healthy.Previous episode: https://www.teenagersuntangled.com/parenting-tips-9-how-to-help-your-teens-manage-their-screen-time-and-talking-to-them-about-healthy-eating-without-giving-them-an-eating-disorder/Support the showThanks for listening. We talk about using tracking as a tool instead of a lifestyle. We dive deep into the importance of mindful eating, where paying attention to not just what you're eating but how you're eating makes a significant difference. In this engaging conversation, we unravel the myths surrounding food, body size, and diabetes while advocating for intuitive eating. Robbyn, herself a diabetic, offers an enlightening perspective on the disease. We walk through the signs, symptoms, and diagnosis process, shedding light on the potential for misdiagnosis and the importance of self-advocacy. Delving into the complexities of diabetes management, we underline the essential role of understanding carbohydrates. However, we strongly believe that managing diabetes doesn't mean bidding farewell to the joys of food. Our conversation culminates in the affirmation that diabetes is not a death sentence. You can, indeed, lead a happy, healthy life alongside managing this condition. A sports Dietitian Nutritionist should not food police you or your gymnast. I know many gymnasts are afraid to work with a dietitian because they're worried they'll have to go on some crazy strict diet of bland boring food. They're afraid they'll be banned from enjoying their favorite dessert or Starbucks drink. Or based on past experiences with other "nutritionists", they're stressed about weigh-ins or being told to lose weight. A dietitian nutritionist acting like the food police to your gymnast isn't going to help them or do them any favors in the future. Why won't I restrict what your gymnast can and can't have? Why am I not going to make her follow strict food rules? Because that approach ultimately doesn't work for a gymnast with big goals and dreams. A restrictive "clean" diet might work for the first couple of weeks to lose weight, but the long-term effects on performance, body image, body composition, and relationship with food can be devastating. And become a life-long struggle. These high-level gymnasts become so under-fueled, their bodies can't keep up with the amount of training needed at the higher levels. That's why we follow a science and research-backed approach to sports nutrition. The philosophy that food is neutral and all foods can fit into a gymnast's diet. So your gymnast is healthy, happy, and performing her best.Listen in to hear why a sports dietitian nutritionist should not food police your gymnast. In this episode you'll hear about: Is your gymnast addicted to sugar... or is something else going on?What happens to body composition due to restriction, binging, and underfuelingThe importance of developing a competent eater for adolescence and beyond. Links & Resources The Balanced Gymnast®  Program for level 5-10 female gymnasts Episode 57: How do I get my gymnast to eat enough?Team Talk Series inquiries for coaches and gymnastics club ownersConnect with Christina on Instagram @the.gymnast.nutritionist or support@christinaandersonrdn.com

The idea of this move is similar to the World Economic Forum's blueprint of cutting down meat consumption among the populace worldwide dramatically. In this case, the idea of Eric Adams' proposition is to cut meat consumption 33% by 2030. Interesting number given. 33%? The symbolic number used by satanists? 2030? Have you ever noticed the voices in your head telling you that you're “bad” for eating a certain food, or any self-critical thought that makes you feel guilt and shame around food? That voice is the food police. This week we're continuing our Intuitive Eating Principles series, talking about Challenging the Food Police, principle four.    You'll learn 1) How our self-talk impacts how we feel and act around food, 2) The common diet voices, and 3) How to shift your mindset from one of policing to a mindset that's empowering around food.   This podcast is for women who crave a new approach to health and want to get out of the rollercoaster of dieting. If you feel like the only way for you to be healthy is by dieting, you've come to the right place! I'm here to show you that health is about so much more than what you eat and how much you hit the gym. Have you ever had someone say, "Are you sure you should be eating this?" or "I'm just saying this because I'm concerned about your health". Or, have you ever told yourself, "You can't eat that. It's bad and it will make you gain weight." Regardless of if those statements come from others or from your own thoughts, those are all voices of the food police. The food police is a term used to describe any judgmental thoughts about food that tell you what to eat, when to eat, or how much to eat. It is possible to refute the food police, and this episode will show you how. ✅ 20 MINUTE TRANSFORMATIONSchedule Here: https://trinadorrah.appointlet.com/s/20mintransformation ✅ WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW I CAN HELP YOU STOP OVEREATING? One of my favorite quotes about the food police is, "Unless you killed the chef, there is no morality or guilt in what you eat," by Evelyn Tribole. The food police are those voices, either the real ones from people in your life or the ones in your head, that are basically telling you what foods you should or shouldn't eat, or how much you should eat. As a result, you often wind up feeling bad about yourself because you ate a piece of pie or you had a second serving of mashed potatoes, or perhaps you found yourself treating Thanksgiving as a cheat day. If this is your relationship with food and you're ready to make peace with it so that you can become a joyful eater, this is an episode you're going to want to listen to from start to finish. We may not be aware of the plethora of the toxic diet talk and implicit negative body and food messaging that comes at us from so many directions – TV, social media, movies, magazines, news outlets, parents, teachers, family, and friends. The pressures to be transform our bodies into something they are not, is incredibly prolific. Today, I am going to discuss the one single most important method to confront the toxic diet culture in our society…self-compassion. It may not sound like much, but self-compassion is critical to dismantling diet culture because it requires that we start with ourselves. Instead of trying to fix others, change their bodies, or force them to be healthy, self-compassion starts by looking internally within ourselves first. To be self-compassionate is to build courage, and it is courage that will stand up to the toxic diet mentality and end it.  Resources: ON Community – We We bring together - people who want to build a positive relationship with food and body - To - practice new habits, learn, share, and grow together - So that we can - have a longer and higher quality of life! Are there things you want to do but are scared to face for fear of pain and hurt?  Nothing comes out great when you repeatedly push everything under the rug. It keeps on stinking, and it gives you an awful feeling of low self-esteem and confidence. The sooner you address it, you will find how much energy you take back to spend on making yourself great again. Nothing beats more than loving yourself first. Facing what scares you the most is the first step. And that takes real inner work.  But that is more than worth it if you get a lifetime of transformation, freedom, and happiness. And that's what our client-guest on today's episode will shed light on. Her journey in the Hypnosis program and how it brings forth the inner change that manifests fully in how she's loving herself now and attracting someone she deserves to be with in any shape she's in and regardless of age is an achievement that has no match. Pamela Driscoll is a former software engineer who now helps individuals and organizations achieve success by understanding how their values, choices, and actions impact their results. She's available for private coaching, group workshops, and online training. "One thing that's happened for me through the program is just releasing so much of that shame and embarrassment to the point where it's okay if I weigh what I weigh, I still deserve X, Y, and Z. I still deserve to be loved. I still deserve to love myself. It's just that my body is a certain shape; it has nothing to do with who I really am as a person." - Pamela Driscoll What you will learn from this episode: 02:26 - Knowing doesn't help: something big and deep needs to be addressed 08:54 - How was it like going through a complicated relationship with food  14:15 - Self-judgment as it relates to food, bodyweight issues, and attracting good vibes 21:33 - What she finds as the biggest benefit of the Hypnosis program: Huge shifts in her lifelong struggle 22:45 - Activities in the program that she finds great help in: facing what scared her the most but finding it empowering instead of painful 31:00 - Taking back your energy and opening up great opportunities after healing your inner struggle 40:21 - What excellent work does Pamela do, and who does she help with? Healing In Hindsight does not endorse the ideologies or beliefs of its guest. Please do your own research.  We believe in being able to have a conversation even with have differing opinions. Food Police, Shame, and Diabetes. What if we stopped shaming people for how they manage their diabetes? It seems like everyone is worried about my diabetes. But why? What's the big deal? Lots of people with diabetes feel like they're under a microscope. But why should we have to explain ourselves? There's a lot of debate around what the "right" way to manage diabetes is, but at the end of the day, it's up to each individual to find what works best for them. My guest Mila Clarke drops some knowledge on the misconceptions, guilt and shame that comes with living with diabetes, especially as an influencer. It's clear that we need to stop judging and shaming each other, and start supporting one another instead. Do you feel like everyone is always watching how you live your life with diabetes? This week, Naomi & Sadie do a deep dive into Intuitive Eating Principle #4 - Challenge the Food Police. This principle is all about unpacking & reframing our thoughts, beliefs, and rules about food (and bodies - because, let's face it, food rules are really body rules). This episode covers: identifying our inner & outer food police, why it's important to trace the origins of our beliefs, and impactful ways to reframe our diet culture beliefs. Plus, we have some nuanced conversations about how the food police and the real police disproportionately harm the same people & why it's important to talk back to medical weight stigma.
