In midlife, women are often handed diets disguised as wellness. More ways to stay young, stay thin, stay "timeless."Debra Benfield, RDN, joins me for a conversation that sits right at the intersection of diet culture, anti-fatness, and anti-aging. Together we talk about how these forces converge in midlife—often making women particularly vulnerable to disordered eating and harmful messaging at exactly the stage when we deserve peace, rest, and joy. Some of the things we get into…* Perimenopause and menopause diet culture messages* Why aging creates heightened vulnerability to diet and wellness culture* The impact of stress and restrictive eating on longevity* Mid-life marketing of disordered eating advice* Wrinkles, Botox, and the skin-care industry* The tyranny of the “belly fat” narrative* How wellness culture capitalizes on our fear of aging and death* Whether strength training is part of the anti-aging conversation* The ways ableism, sexism, and agism collide in media* How to navigate fear-mongering messages about food, weight, and health* What we can do to reclaim our time and energy and powerThis is an episode about reclaiming our power and time from the industries profiting off our insecurities. About saying no to being sold “youth in a bottle” and yes to embracing the fullness of who we are—wrinkles, softness, wisdom, and all.Debra has helped hundreds of women heal their relationship with food and their bodies over her 35-year career as a Registered Dietitian. She specializes in the prevention and treatment of disordered eating, and brings her passion, expertise, and lived experience to the intersection of pro-aging and body liberation work. Deb's work is rooted in helping clients recognize internalized ageism and end it, dismantle internalized diet culture and fatphobia, see midlife and beyond as a time of Emergence, nourish their bodies to support vitality and aging, and develop a respectful partnership with their bodies.Support the show: Enjoying this podcast? Why is our practice The Gymnast Nutritionist® even though we are all Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (specialized in pediatrics and sports nutrition). Marketing. No one knows what a dietitian is. Not even in the hospital. We get all dietricians, dietary, nutritionalists, etc. But, there are HUGE differences between dietitians and nutritionists. We are not created equally. And, like in any professions, they bad dietitians and bad nutritionists. But, I am confident to say there are way more “nutritionists”, health coaches, etc who do harm out there bc they just don't have the training needed to do what they're trying to do. Now, this is going to come off as all “high and mighty” which is funny because if any other professions—doctor, nurse, physical therapist, etc was saying you shouldn't try to do those professions without the training + credentials, no one would bat an eye. But I guess the thing about nutrition is everyone eats, everyone has an opinion about what people eat, and especially former gymnasts—they think they know it all.I bring all this up bc it's about knowing what's up as a consumer and making sure you're choosing qualified professionals to help your CHILD and adolescent gymnast. It's one thing if as an adult you want to work with some personal trainer or health coach to help you with your nutrition—whatever, that's your choice. But for your own child or teen--- we need to be more careful because they are not just small adults. Their physiology is different, their development and cognition is different, their nutrition needs are different, and the growth piece is so so so critical and even adult dietitians don't know how to assess this (including NCAA dietitians—you're working with adults). In this episode you'll learn: Why The Gymnast Nutritionist® team is made up of highly specialized Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (no "health coaches" over here)The differences between a "nutritionist" and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)What it takes to become a RDNWhy you should only hire a RDN to work with your gymnast on nutrition versus a personal trainer, health coach, "nutritionist", etc

Episode 36 - Mary Lesser - Sports Nutrition and Considerations for the Young Athlete with GI DisordersIn this episode of Nutrition Pearls: the Podcast, co-hosts Nikki Misner and Jen Smith speak with Mary Lesser PhD, RD, dietitian on the topic of Sports Nutrition. Originally a Northern California native, Mary is currently an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Nutrition and Metabolic Biology Department at the University of California, Berkeley as well as a Pediatric Sports Nutrition Dietitian at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. Nutrition is and has been her major field of study for the past twenty+ years! The field has allowed her to pursue her passion for research, education, as well as practicing in the clinical setting. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree at UC Davis in Clinical Nutrition with a minor in Human Development and then went on to complete her Master of Science Degree in Nutrition at Tufts University in Boston, MA. While working on her Masters, she completed her Dietetic Internship at Tufts Medical Center and is currently a Registered Dietitian. She then returned to UC Davis to complete her PhD in Nutritional Biology, with an emphasis in Developmental Nutrition and then moved down to the Bay Area to complete a postdoctoral fellowship at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute.Mary chose Nutrition because she has always felt that following a healthy lifestyle and eating pattern are very important and has always incorporated (as well as encouraged) this philosophy into her own life as well as the life of others. She is one who likes to have a little variety in her life so as of right now, her current (and future!) plans include a career that involves research, clinical work, teaching, and translating science into community outreach + policy/advocacy efforts. In research, she is interested in investigating the nutrition environment during early development (pregnancy, lactation, early childhood) to observe (if any) persistent developmental effects (of the fetus, neonate, child) that may increase or decrease chronic disease risk later in life. And in practice, Mary enjoys working with young athletes on their Sports Nutrition needs and goals.Nutrition Pearls is supported by an educational grant from Mead Johnson Nutrition.Resources:www.ucsfbenioffchildrens.org/-/media/project/ucsf/ucsf-bch/pdf/sports-nutrition-2016-meals-snacks.pdf?rev=177fc88db39d4ef096bc3760a73c5a8eProduced by: Corey IrwinNASPGHAN - Council for Pediatric Nutrition Professionalscpnp@naspghan.org
Most people think bloodwork is only about catching problems when you're already “out of range.” But the truth is, waiting for your health to crash before you act is the exact reason so many high performers plateau with their body, energy, and results. In this episode, Chad sits down with Beyond Built's Registered Dietitian, Caroline, to break down why clinical ranges aren't the same as optimal ranges… why most doctors refuse to run the labs you actually need (like thyroid, cortisol, and hormones)… and how often you really should be testing if you want to perform and look your best. They also share their own experiences with labwork, the hidden signs they've caught early, and why the data matters not just for athletes, but for anyone who refuses to settle for “good enough” with their health. Listen before you pull labs next. Your results and your peace of mind will thank you. Episode 2681- Vinnie Tortorich welcomes dietitian Michelle Hurn, and they discuss disrupting Big Food, lobbying for truth, and the downsides of shortcuts. https://vinnietortorich.com/2025/08/downsides-of-shortcuts-michelle-hurn-episode-2681 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Lobbying for Truth Michelle Hurn has been a Registered Dietitian for years, but she challenges the current nutrition guidelines. (2:00) Early nutrition guidelines were established by Seventh-day Adventists to eliminate the eating of meat. The facts are lined up and vetted in FAT: a documentary. (6:30) Vinnie curates knowledge of other experts on his show. (11:30) Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has caused some disruption to the messaging; however, as long as Big Pharma and Big Food are allowed to lobby, there won't likely be much change. Lobbying affects both sides of the aisle, and changes have not been made. (18:00) It's part of what has been driving the decrease in metabolic health of our society. (20:00) Being a registered dietician is a challenge; positions in hospitals and schools pay less than half of what Big Food will pay. (22:00) Vinnie shares the story (and misconception) behind “fat burns in the flames of carbohydrates.” (28:00) Michelle shares her story of how she discovered what she had learned was wrong. (34:00) Her health had deteriorated, and she became very ill. It was when she learned about low-carb that she regained her health. Vinnie shares how he figured out how to fuel himself with fat for his ultra races. (40:00) Michelle is a marathon runner and made discoveries of her own, including high-fat/low-carb to fuel her body. (45:00) The Downsides of Shortcuts GLP-1s are all the rage, but nothing in biochemistry is free of consequences. (51:00) You can't affect any one issue in isolation. There are downsides to shortcuts. The side effects are a serious concern. Suppressing ghrelin can suppress hunger, but that means it also suppresses autophagy, which is your body's way of cleaning toxins from its cells. (52:00) They discuss other implications associated with GLP-1s, like loss of muscle tissue. Michelle and Vinnie have both helped numerous people just through the low-carb lifestyle approach alone. (57:00) Those changes alone have gotten people off certain medications and reversed diabetes. THERAPISTS! Join me and Victoria Rodriguez of Revive Counseling in our 6-week Chronic Illness Therapists Cohort! This is a curriculum-based consultation class for therapists who want to do their best work with the chronic illness population.[CLICK HERE TO JOIN]**Episode summary: In this follow-up episode with registered dietitian Samina Qureshi, we explore her new clinical textbook that tackles something I see all the time in my practice - when chronic GI conditions create eating patterns that look disordered but have nothing to do with weight or body image. Samina and her team of 10 health professionals wrote this resource because they were seeing patients come in terrified of food, experiencing unexplained weight loss, not because they wanted to be thin, but because they were genuinely afraid of throwing up or having worsened GI symptoms. We talk about ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and how it shows up in the GI space, why it's so important to believe patients when they say certain foods cause pain even without a formal diagnosis, and how the goal isn't just telling someone to "eat and you'll feel better" - because how frustrating is that advice? Instead, it's about finding accessible ways to nourish their body while expanding their diet and helping them feel confident around food again. This conversation is valuable for both clinicians who want to understand these complex intersections and for anyone living with GI conditions who's been told their very real physical symptoms are just anxiety when they're actually doing what they can to keep their body safe.Resources mentioned:→ Samina's Book, Comprehensive Nutrition Therapy for Co-Occurring Gastrointestinal & Eating Disorders: the EDGI Training ProjectMEET DESTINY: Website / Instagram / BlueSky / YouTube / TikTokMEET SAMINA: Website / Instagram / TikTokSIGN UP FOR DESTINY'S NEXT LIVE WORKSHOP→ Aug 30th → READ THE BLOG FOR THIS EPISODEASK DESTINY ANYTHING→ Submit your questions hereFOR YOU, OUR PODCAST LISTENERSJOIN DESTINY'S MEMBERSHIP - for folks with chronic pain & illness→ Join Welcome To The Waiting Room (ongoing support for staying regulated while living with chronic illness - This does not replace therapy, but it's a great addition to your regular therapy appointments)FOR MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS

ARFID is not just a childhood diagnosis. In this episode of Dr. Marianne-Land: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast, I am joined by registered dietitian Caroline (Callie) Holbrook, RD, to discuss what Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder looks like in adults and how to navigate food and nutrition in ways that feel safe and supportive. Callie shares her expertise in working with adults with ARFID, highlighting how it often intersects with neurodivergence, sensory sensitivities, and the pressures of adult life such as relationships, work events, travel, and meal planning. We also talk about how shame develops around food, the impact of wellness culture, and why rigid nutritional rules can make ARFID even harder to manage. Content Caution: This episode includes discussions of eating disorders, food-related anxiety, shame, and nutrition planning. Please take care while listening and step away if needed. What We Cover in This Episode: How ARFID presents differently in adults compared to children The role of shame and social pressures in adult ARFID Strategies for building safe foods lists and reducing overwhelm Why processed foods can be a helpful and low-stress option Collaborative, neurodivergent-affirming approaches to nutrition Addressing sensory sensitivities, executive functioning challenges, and interoception Why progress may mean building energy intake and problem-solving around meals instead of immediately trying new foods This episode emphasizes flexibility, autonomy, and creating supportive environments for eating, including practical tips such as adjusting lighting, using sound regulation tools, and using distractions during meals. Why This Episode Matters: Adults with ARFID often feel misunderstood and pressured to eat in ways that do not align with their needs. This episode validates adult ARFID experiences and offers real-life strategies to navigate food safely and respectfully. About Caroline "Callie" Holbrook, RD: Callie is a Registered Dietitian based in San Diego, California. Originally from Alabama, she relocated across the country four years ago. Happy Satiated Saturday! Something I've noticed in any body image healing exploration is how private body image concerns are. About 84% of women struggle with body image, yet something so prevalent is often kept hidden. I wonder what could change if how hard it is to live in a body could be openly discussed and supported, where conversations could look like: Person 1: How are you today?Person 2: I'm actually having a really hard time with my body image today.Person 1: Thanks for letting me know. I struggle a lot too. Is there anything you need in this experience today? I want to normalize body image struggles because I sense this might be the first step toward changing the conversations around living in a body. Rather than beginning with body acceptance or body love, sometimes you first just need to be with that, sometimes, because of a million different reasons, it is hard to be in your body and to like the way your body looks. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Anna Sweeney, Nutrition Therapist and Registered Dietitian, about: The complexities of body image healingThe impact of societal messaging and social mediaChallenging body image normsThe GLP-1 craze we're in right nowMedical stigmaFinding safety in the bodyYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/navigating-the-complexities-of-body-imageI hope you can join me Wednesday, August 27th at 5:00 pm ET for my upcoming Befriending Your Body Image Challenges with Somatic Eating® Practices Workshop.
