Heather Caplan's running story spans many seasons of her life. And through those seasons, she has discovered how wins in her running life can show up in many different ways. These days, Caplan is a runner, a run coach, a dietician, the mother of three children, and she is also well known for being the co-founder of the Lane 9 Project, with Alexis Fairbanks. To quote Caplan, "Lane 9 is a community of athletes and a directory of clinicians and coaches that work with female athletes. And we're all trying to improve menstrual health and reduce REDs across various levels of sport." You can discover Lane 9 through its website, podcast, and newsletter. These days, running looks very different than it did earlier in her life. Caplan first started running in college, a time marked by disordered eating and amenorrhea. Caplan discusses the intersection between her running pursuits and these health challenges, and how running has changed over time, through her early adulthood, and then through becoming the mom of three, in addition to navigating the rest of life, which has included several long-distance moves. Caplan's journey through it all, to where she is today, finding a renewed sense of belonging and joy in her running life, is what her episode is all about. Dr. Leada Malek, whom you may know as @drmalekpt on Instagram and TikTok, joins Lane 9 co-founder Heather Caplan to chat about what it really takes for athletes to get and stay "healthy" for the long term. We talk about her athletic story, how she starts every assessment with active clients, the most common injuries and inquiries from runners, why strength training is a key component of running fitness, and what to actually do about stretching. Her book, "The Science of Stretch" is available wherever books are sold. This is a check in episode! Co-founder Heather Caplan, about to earn a double RD after her name (you'll see), checks in to see what you're doing to add some FUN to your runs, and shares how she's been doing that recently. (See: Music, running groups, community, and more! HBU?) She also offers a period check in, because the more we talk about these things, maybe (maybe!) the less in-our-feels we might, feel, about them. We have to talk about the privileges in our virtual WIND office, in the room(s) at WIND events, and within weight-inclusive spaces at large. What does it mean that many of us in this space hold so many unearned privileges (body, race, ability, etc.), and how do we act with intention and integrity once we know what those privilges mean? Tune in to hear Heather Caplan, Kim Hoban, and Leah Tsui—of the WIND Team—explore this topic together, sharing what they've learned over the years of working within inclusive spaces and being faced with the power their identities hold. This relatively short episode is just scratching the surface of this conversation, and we'll come back to it again and again, no doubt. Thanks for being here for every body with us! In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with anti-diet weight inclusive registered dietitian Heather Caplan. We start off by defining the terms: weight inclusive care, being an anti-diet and non-diet dietitian, and Health At Every Size (HAES). We discuss the importance of a weight neutral approach to nutrition because science proves that weight does not determine health. Heather and I explain the many limitations of BMI and defining health based on body size and shape. Heather talks about the Health At Every Size movement and its mission of inclusion to bring healthcare to all. Heather talks about her introduction to dietetics and her own struggles with disordered eating that caused her to question the current weight-centered approach to nutrition and diet culture. She shares her career path from practicing in a weight-centered setting post college to discovering intuitive eating and weight neutral approaches to dietetics. We discuss studying nutrition in college and the many flaws with the curriculum. We discuss the intersection between running and nutrition, and how sports dietitians can have a Health At Every Size approach and debunk the myths surrounding weight and performance. Dieting and weight loss may improve performance in the short term, but we explain how the sustainable path to long term success that allows athletes to reach even higher levels of performance must prioritize health first, regardless of weight. Heather talks about founding WIND, Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics, to educate other dietitians, practitioners and more about inclusivity and diversity in nutrition. Heather was the host of the RD Real Talk podcast for 5 years and she explains how shifting priorities have led to its end. We discuss the importance of change during different seasons of life, including new motherhood, in order to keep pursuing our ultimate passions and goals. We talk about the myth of doing it all and how what we see on Instagram and social media is not reality: the struggles are rarely shared. She says that with a diet culture approach, clients are more likely to drop off and not follow the dietitian's interventions. Knowing everyone is different, Heather gets curious about each client's different lived experiences and provides an anti-diet approach to food and movement. I have been on the RDRealTalk Podcast train for the past 5 years (WHOA). It's been nowhere near perfect, but this space is not for perfectionism! It's a space for questioning the ways diet culture has conditioned us to think there's only one way to do things, following the rules, and being "successful". We're human; we want to know if we're doing something right or wrong! Even when we're not dieting, we want to know, are we doing this intuitive eating thing the "right" way? A listener asked what milestones to look for, how to know if they were being "successful" with intuitive eating. So, this episode explores what that looks like, why that question is so common, and some "success" traps to avoid from diet culture! You'll also here the answer to two Intuitive Eating questions: - What do I do if I'm not feeling hungry (because of emotional overwhelm and/or stress), but I know that I need to eat? - And, what if I eat intuitively but never eat a vegetable?! To celebrate the release of ANTI-DIET in paperback, we're bringing you a special bonus episode with a rare recording from the hardcover book tour! Fellow anti-diet dietitian Heather Caplan interviews Christy in front of a live audience about how to fight the co-opting of the anti-diet movement; language to use when talking to people who are brand new to this approach; how to spread the anti-diet message in healthcare, schools, the social sciences, and your own life; how Christy got away with writing a book called ANTI-DIET in a culture that's very much *pro* diet; and lots more. The interview was recorded at East City Bookshop in Washington, DC, in February 2020, and it's still all too relevant for the coming New Year. Heather Caplan is an anti-diet, weight-inclusive registered dietitian with a virtual private practice. When you think about the words "health" or "healthy", what comes to mind? Is it diet culture's version of health—a body ideal, superfoods, gallons of water, and the perfect exercise routine? On this episode, we're taking a hard look at what we think of when we hear the words health or healthy, and getting honest about how we've probably tried healthism on for size. Then, we take it back! We reclaim healthy from diet culture, and use four prompts to help you decide what it means TO YOU! The Messy Intersection: Pregnancy, Motherhood and Feeding Our Kids
The Messy Intersection is back with Season 2! Welcome to The Messy Intersection, hosted by Diana Rice, RD of @anti.diet.kids. Today we're talking to Heather Caplan, an anti-diet registered dietitian, eating disorder survivor and mom of three. Content warning: Discussion of an unplanned pregnancy. Heather and Diana discuss: Heather's shock of discovering she was pregnant again when she'd just had her second baby mid-COVID. Feeling that your body is not your own because of pregnancy and breastfeeding. When a new pregnancy interrupts your breastfeeding relationship with the older child. Holding space for both women challenged by unplanned pregnancies and women enduring infertility. Heather's experience with hypothalamic amenorrhea (loss of menstruation) related to her past eating disorder and her belief at the time that she wouldn't be able to conceive. Heather's experience with orthorexia in young adulthood and what orthorexia is. How an orthorexic mentality (unhealthy obsession with healthy eating) can show up or resurface when feeding children. The challenge of normalizing our kids eating and enjoying all foods, even when we have already done the work of making all foods fit for ourselves. How messages about positive child feeding practices, including the Division of Responsibility, can easily become warped into diet culture messages. Why there are not more resources for parents in the anti-diet space. This episode is a short dive into how we UN-learn the idea that foods can be "good" or "bad", "healthy" OR "unhealthy" — the oversimplified categories that diet culture teaches us to apply to food. This is a scam! Food is food. It can't be bad, but it can taste bad. So, let's flip this and reverse it—taking diet culture's game and playing it with our own rules. And, a little note on WHY we sometimes (often?) need these things to be simple. It's okay to be in that season of life. Heather Caplan on adjusting expectations in times of uncertainty & important messages for her past self. In this episode, Heather shares more about her RD Real Talk podcast, her experience running a private practice through maternity leave and motherhood and how these lessons may convey during COVID-19, more about starting WIND; the Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics movement, the words of wisdom she would offer herself 3-5 years ago, how the weight inclusive space supports self-reflection, why we need to acknowledge the work that has come before us and how The Iceberg Analogy aligns within this community. Here Fi and Heather speak about: Heather’s podcast; RD Real Talk, and how it has evolved over time. Navigating maternity leave and motherhood whilst running a private practice, and how we can take on or consider some of these aspects during COVID-19. The Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics (WIND) movement; What it is and how it came to fruition. The original intention for WIND and how the idea has evolved to what it is today. The words, lessons and advice Heather would offer herself 3 or 5 years ago; and how this insight can support health practitioners who are currently studying and/or working in weight centric spaces or those who might be new to the HAES / non-diet / weight inclusive paradigm. How being a part of this community can open us up for self-reflection and help us to investigate social conditioning and personal patterns which can get in the way. The importance of acknowledging the decades of work that has come before us. Using the Iceberg Analogy within the HAES / weight inclusive community to understand visibility, the need for ongoing learning (and unlearning), the power of a beginners mind and so much more. Jennifer welcomes Heather Caplan, founder of WIND, to the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast. Providing events focused on continuing education and connection for weight-inclusive dietitians, WIND fills a gap in the industry by bringing dietitians together for community, education and connection where weight-inclusive care is the norm. The story of how WIND was conceived, launched and has evolved is what Heather shares with Jennifer in this episode. Together they discuss her own journey of overcoming an eating disorder, the process of un-learning, and the initial confusion of establishing her role as a dietitian with a weight-inclusive approach. When she discovered the paradigm of Intuitive Eating, Heather expanded her learning curve and embraced the weight-inclusive niche that led to opening her own private practice. Now three years into her own business, together they discuss how a natural progression happened from working with clients, to also supporting other dietitians, and the reward of giving back to the profession and helping to shift the perspective in the industry. “If we’re not having these topics represented at the major Dietetic conferences, let’s have our own conference.” – Heather Caplan Some of the topics discussed include: The ways her private practice has evolved from its origins with her prior clientele as a running coach. How starting a nutrition podcast early on was the key to growing her practice, and why she shifted her message from addressing clients, to other dietitians who were already listening. What sparked the idea to start hosting small conferences to supplement the limited number of HAES-aligned sessions at FNCE. How she tested the concept, gathered support, and successfully hosted a small sold-out test event in February 2019 that Jennifer spoke at. The benefits of in-person smaller events versus hundreds of people, and the lessons she’s learned with limited event planning experience. Fellow anti-diet dietitian and podcaster Heather Caplan joins us to discuss her experience with orthorexia (aka obsession with “healthy” eating), how to bring joyful movement into eating-disorder recovery, the intersection of pregnancy and diet culture, sports nutrition from an intuitive-eating perspective, and so much more. Plus, Christy answers a listener question about how to know if you’re TRULY craving something or just eating it to rebel against diet culture. Heather Caplan is a Washington DC-based dietitian with a virtual private practice. She is founder and director of Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics (WIND) events, working to reduce and dismantle weight discrimination in healthcare and dietetics. In her practice, she primarily works with active women, disordered eating, and eating disorders, using non-diet and weight-inclusive practices. With fellow dietitian Kelly Jones, Heather hosts an online course (Fit Fueling) for all-level athletes, and fellow dietitians, teaching a combination of sports nutrition and intuitive eating. Additional projects Heather spends time on include her podcast RD Real Talk, highlighting how to use the non-diet approach in various dietetic disciplines, and the nonprofit she co-founded, Lane 9 Project, which raises awareness of eating disorders and reproductive health issues for women. Heather has been featured on the TODAY show—sharing her personal experience with Orthorexia—and in national publications such as The Washington Post, Runner’s World, Outside, and Women’s Running. Amee Severson, registered dietitian and HAES®-aligned practitioner, joins me to talk through HAES principle #2: Health Enhancement. There are a lot of layers to this, and I hope we did the topic at least a little bit of justice, addressing the many facets of health, and what "health enhancement" might mean to each individual. Fun fact, and a follow up on part of our discussion: In 2013, the American Medical Association's own Committee on Science and Public Health advised that ob*sity not be classified as a disease—meaning there wasn't enough science to support it. And, they noted, "It has no symptoms, and it’s not always harmful." The AMA disregarded this advice. You can read more about that here. Check out www.decolonizingfitness.com. This episode's Dear Food letter: Dear Food, I feel like I am at a crossroads with you. For years I restricted you and then binged on you, part of me struggling to give myself enough of you and part of me demanding that I get my needs met. I know so much more now than I did when I first started struggling with you; I know about trauma, dissociation, how bingeing can't be "fixed" with restriction, that my weight and my body and even what or when or how much I eat are not the problem. I know that, nowadays, when I use you to numb my feelings or try to escape them, you don't provide me the true comfort and relief that I long for. I also know that, nowadays, I can enjoy you so much more than I did in the past. I can be flexible about when and what I eat, I can sometimes articulate what of you I'd like to eat, and I can sometimes say when I've had enough of you. I no longer binge as often as I used to, and I don't binge on the quantities of food I used to. But there are still lots of evenings when I turn to you and eat more of you than I'm hungry for, or I eat something that I don't even truly want to eat. I don't think this is the same as bingeing, but it still feels like I'm trying to use you in ways that you can't help me, and this behavior is keeping me stuck in a place I want to grow out of. I feel like I turn to you when I simply WANT—want more of a good feeling, or want less boredom, or exhaustion, or frustration from the workday. Why do I keep turning to you when I know you can't give me what I need? How can I connect this knowledge that you can't fix my feelings or take them away with the part of myself that still depends on you for . . . everything? I'm ready to take the next step, yet at the same time I feel like I am holding myself back. How can we practice more weight-inclusivity in healthcare? In dietetics? Why does this approach feel threatening, and divisive? What can we do about the lack of diversity in dietetics? Weight Inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics (WIND) Workshop recording: These aren’t easy questions to answer, or even talk about. But it’s necessary that we look at these issues and get ready to take them on. It’s imperative that we stop promoting and engaging weight-based discrimination. It’s unethical to suggest weight-loss is always a path to better health. Today’s guest, Heather Caplan, is a dietitian, running coach, a woman who has struggled and overcome. She shares deeply and openly about our relationship with food, eating, body image and more. At one point she says, “I felt like my life was running me instead of me running my life.” That's the point when she flicked the switch and changed her life. And that’s what we focus on today. How we can take control of our lives. In Heather’s world, this is focused on our often difficult, emotional relationship with food and eating as it relates to our relationship with our bodies. Today we talk about: Diet culture - Being an anti-diet dietitian Intuitive eating What the scale?! Eating disorders - a broad spectrum Heather's personal struggles with orthorexia (preoccupation with food) The Female Triad which consists of energy imbalances (possibly tied to eating disorders), menstrual changes & loss of bone density Habits and how to retrain our brains Lane 9 Project - Heather's nonprofit that supports women Heather is also a podcast host – check out her show RD Real Talk – she gets down and dirty in every episode. If you're interested in her area of expertise, I encourage you to check out her show. I love Heather's final nugget “You do you. Don’t be afraid to do what’s best for yourself.” Because in the end, it’s often fear that holds us back from many incredible experiences we could have in this lifetime. When you let go of that fear and you sink into who you are, accepting and embracing yourself, you will find the gold! For more Heather Caplan, go here! Heather Caplan, RD joins us to discuss how under-fueling and over- exercising impacts the female body and how the Lane 9 Project speaking out about women's health, nutrition, fertility, and running. The female athlete triad is sidelining female athletes. The triad includes low energy availability (under-fueling for your activity), amenorrhea (loss of period), and low bone mass. This can be normalized in our culture of women in sport but it is not. Delayed menses, multiple injuries and stress fractures, are red flags for the female athlete triad. Heather shares her experience of her recovery and how our experiences can lead us to amazing things. For Heather, it was the Lane 9 Project a place of awareness of the female athlete triad and for women to share their personal stories. So You Know She Is Legit... We spend a lot of time on Nutrition Matters Podcast talking about how to heal your relationship with food and your body. One of the very important components of approaching behaviors from a healthy perspective is to take a look at exercise/movement. For many, exercise can be a tricky component to incorporate in a way that's in balance and that doesn't become disordered. In this episode, I speak with Heather Caplan, RD about her own experience with developing a healthy relationship with exercise and her professional expertise about incorporating exercise and movement from an intuitive and/or mindful approach. We talk about how to find joy in moving your body, why it matters and provide some practical advice for incorporating exercise and movement into your life without creating chaos or rigidity. When you think of dietitians, you probably think of, well, diets. It’s right there in the name, and most dietitians are devoted to helping people follow regulated diets that will, in theory, make them healthier. Heather Caplan isn’t like most dietitians. The certified running coach and host of the RD Real Talk podcast believes diets are nothing but counterproductive and that “diet culture” is full of hidden agendas and falsehoods detrimental to our wellbeing and mentality towards food. Not just that, but dieting can go way too far, causing conditions like orthorexia in which an unhealthy fixation on eating healthy can lead to symptoms like hair loss, difficulty sleeping, chronic fatigue, anemia, and hypothyroidism. You read that right. Too much healthy eating can be unhealthy. That’s why Heather exercises a non-diet approach at her private practice in Washington, DC, helping runners relearn the “intuitive” eating that diet culture can make so foreign to us. In this episode, Heather discusses the pitfalls of diets, shares her firsthand account with orthorexia, and gives us some tips on how to adopt intuitive eating for optimal health and performance.
Running coach and anti-diet dietitian Heather Caplan believes in the power of intuitive eating. Instead of avoiding certain “bad” foods, she is a proponent of listening to your body and fueling it accordingly. And that means you’re ok to have some treats on a regular basis as well!
