Hello friends! I'm excited to share what I've learned with you all today because I have been down a rabbit hole for this topic. The question that prompted my research was “Where does the statistic that 95% of diets fail come from?” And I dug deep. I don't advise you to go my route and Google, I did it so you don't have to. But amongst all the fat shaming and weight discrimination, I found some answers. Some of those came from the book “Anti-Diet” by Christy Harrison. And the first place it was reported was in 1959 in a study done by Dr. Albert Stunkard. The research is there! The statistic is accurate. And that's what this episode is about.  Even back in the 1950s, obesity was assumed to be a disease that doctors needed to treat. Their assumption was that it should be an easy treatment: get people to eat less and move more. Right? This same assumption is prevalent in diet culture today. So when it fails, the blame is put on the patient instead of on the diet. A lot of studies are conducted over a short period of time so in that first six months it will look like a success. But if the patients are followed for longer, over a year or more, that's when weight plateaus and people start regaining. Additionally, around 40% of people drop out of studies. So finding the origin of the ‘98% of diets fail' statistic and proving it with additional studies requires a lot of digging. But it is a true statistic and I'm going to tell you why. I'm going to explain it all in this episode. I think it's an important thing to discuss and understand because patients do not need to be blamed for the failure of the treatment. Diet culture is lying to us.__About Dr. Michelle Tubman:Dr. Michelle Tubman is certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, which means she understands exactly what's happening in your body when you diet. Although she does not provide any medical advice in her coaching programs, this knowledge gives her an edge over most coaches. She also holds Level 1 and Level 2 Precision Nutrition coaching certifications which make her skilled at coaching nutrition, dietary change, and habit change in general. Realizing that emotional eating and bingeing are complicated for most of us, she also did training in mind-body and intuitive eating. Peace around food is possible.__Resources discussed in this episode:“Anti-Diet” by Christy Harrison“The Results of Treatment for Obesity: A Review of the Literature and Report of a Series” by Albert Stunkard, MD and Mavis McLaren-Hume MS__Learn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

Societal notions of “beauty” and our relationship with our bodies and food have been deeply influenced by diet culture. Author and registered dietitian Christy Harrison defines diet culture as: “a system of beliefs that equates thinness, muscularity, and particular body shapes with health and moral virtue; promotes weight loss and body reshaping as a means of attaining higher status; demonizes certain foods and food groups while elevating others; and oppresses people who don't match its supposed picture of ‘health'…It masquerades as health, wellness, and fitness.” (Anti-Diet, Christy Harrison, p. 7).In today's episode, I talk with registered dietitian, sports nutritionist, and nutrition therapist Leslie Schilling about the widespread impacts of diet culture, including in our schools, medical offices, and places of worship. Leslie recently released her second book, Feed Yourself: Step Away from the Lies of Diet Culture and into Your Divine Design. She has also served as a performance nutrition consultant for Cirque du Soleil®, an expert contributor to U.S. News & World Report, and has been featured in media outlets like Health, Women's Health, Self, Pregnancy Magazine, Yoga Journal, The Huffington Post, and on HGTV.In my time with Leslie, she helps us unravel some of diet culture's lies, including how its beliefs and practices have infiltrated the church. She also helps us see that thinness isn't synonymous with health, our worth is not tied to our body size or what is on our plate, and that body diversity is divine. In so many ways, Leslie helps us name the lies of diet culture so we can fight back, live in freedom, and trust our body's divine design.Learn more about Leslie's book, here.Buy Melissa L. Christy Harrison, a pioneer in the anti-diet movement, has transformed the way I see food, weight, and health. Now she's coming on the show to talk about THE WELLNESS TRAP, a hodgepodge of diet culture, disinformation, and dubious diagnoses. Many wellness solutions that promise “health and healing” are really just promoting a standard of health that's unattainable, problematic, and harmful to your health. You will learn... - why diets and weight loss are NOT the solution to health concerns  - how the wellness world tricks us into dubious diagnoses and harmful approaches to “healing” - who often falls into the wellness trap (and why YOU might have at times too…) - how to think critically and employ scientific literacy Remember: a healthy amount of skepticism will keep you from falling into the wellness trap. Not everything needs to be cured or healed, especially if the methods are scientifically unsound. Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, is a registered dietitian nutritionist, certified intuitive eating counselor, and journalist who has been covering food, nutrition, and health for more than 20 years. "Wellness" is 4.4-trillion-dollar global industry — but in many cases, it's not actually making us more well. In a society that's become increasingly distrustful of conventional medicine, how can we decipher what's fact vs. fiction, steer clear of The Wellness Trap, and reimagine what well-being CAN be? Today's guest is the phenomenal Christy Harrison, a journalist, registered dietitian, and certified intuitive eating counselor. She's the author of the brand new book The Wellness Trap: Break Free from Diet Culture, Disinformation, and Dubious Diagnoses and Find Your True Well-Being  and the amazing book Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating. Christy is encouraging us to expand our critical thinking skills and hold multiple truths at once. If you listen to one pod this week, make it this one. IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT: The difference between misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation How social media's algorithms can lead you down more extreme, risky paths without even intending to Why the wellness industry is so enticing and, at times, can seem way more "trustworthy" to us (even if that's not always the case)  How to intentionally and mindfully make space for wellness practices and alternatives you love and find useful How to determine what's helpful, what's harmful, and what deserves a second look What to say to a friend who might have fallen down a dangerous rabbit hole How you can reinvision what "living well" actually means and SO MUCH MORE. ABOUT THE WELLNESS TRAP: The Wellness Trap delves into the persistent, systemic problems with that industry, offering insight into its troubling pattern of cultural appropriation and its destructive views on mental health, and shedding light on how a growing distrust of conventional medicine has led ordinary people to turn their backs on science. Weaving together history, memoir, reporting, and practical advice, Harrison illuminates the harms of wellness culture while re-imagining our society's relationship with well-being.   SHOW NOTES: Buy The Wellness Trap: Break Free from Diet Culture, Disinformation, and Dubious Diagnoses and Find Your True Well-Being   Buy Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating Rethinking Wellness Food Psych Christy's website Christy's newsletter Christy on IG Follow Katie on Instagram Leave a review on iTunes (and subscribe to the WANTcast if you haven't already!) On the surface, wellness culture can be so enticing, perhaps seen as the pathway to optimal health and wellbeing. In today's episode, however, Christy Harrison unpacks some of the dynamics and potential dangers of wellness culture; helping us see why we should think twice before investing in a product or plan that seems too good to be true.Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, CEDS is a journalist, registered dietitian, and certified intuitive eating counselor. She's the author of Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating and her most recent book, The Wellness Trap: Break Free from Diet Culture, Disinformation, and Dubious Diagnoses and Find Your True Well-Being. Christy is the producer and host of two podcasts, Rethinking Wellness and Food Psych, which help listeners think critically about diet and wellness culture and develop more peaceful relationships with food. Christy has written for publications including The New York Times, SELF, The Food Network, and many others. Her work has been covered in numerous outlets including The Washington Post, Health, and TODAY.In our time together, Christy describes wellness culture as “a set of values that equates wellness with moral goodness and holds up certain behaviors and a certain type of body as the path to achieving that supposed goodness.” Along with describing wellness culture, Christy helps us see how wellness culture is the new guise of diet culture and how it differs from true wellbeing; including leading some people to disordered eating, unhelpful fixations, and potentially harmful behaviors. She also explains how “beauty” is used to sell wellness and gives us some ideas on how we can think critically about the ploys and products associated with wellness culture.

This week I spoke to Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, who, in addition to being my close friend of over a decade, is someone whose work has significantly impacted me. As a journalist she's covered food, nutrition, and health for more than 20 years. She's also a clinician working with people as a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified intuitive eating counselor. She helps tens of thousands of people around the world think critically about diet and wellness culture and develop more peaceful relationships with food. Her writing has appeared everywhere from New York Times to the Food Network, and she's written two books: 2019's Anti-Diet and her latest, The Wellness Trap. We talked about how she's handling the praise and criticism of a large platform, what well-being practices she does participate in, and in a clip from an interview I did with her on her new show Rethinking Wellness we talk about how we met in 2013. She asks me about how I got so into wellness culture so young and how my episode on her first show, Food Psych, where we talked about orthorexia was one of the early influences for this new book. We cover some topics from this book including how some of the pitfalls of modern healthcare can drive people to alternative wellness approaches and then how social media algorithms intensify this, leading people far down unexpected rabbit holes, what the care effect is, the history of the hysteria diagnosis, and much more. Show Notes:- My interview with Christy on well-being > wellness- Find Christy on the Web | Instagram- Christy's podcasts: Rethinking Wellness & Food Psych- Christy's books: The Wellness Trap  & Anti-Diet - Sign up for Jésabel's (last week's guest) and my Life Audit Workshop- Find me: @letitouttt or I'm @katiedalebout- The Podcast Kit is 50% off with code SPRING - Our newsletter to get show notes + essays by me, recs, etc.- A few spots in the Creative Clinic: more info here or email me (katie@letitouttt.com) : ) - For book recs, our bookshelf here - and I made a shop  with recs ...with shelves for guests - The Let It Out Kits: are self-study workshops for personal growing based on all I've ever learned and am learning. Thanks so much for listening to this podcast.  If you liked this episode, try out:Episode 369: Seasons of Overwhelm with Christy Harrison (Part 1)Episode 354: Don't Let It Get You Down with Savala Nolan (Part 1)

Wallis joined the team a few years ago, and she, like Michelle, is so smart and cool as you'll hear. We talk about the beginning days of Holisticism, a space that bridges the gap between the mystic and the realistic to make well-being more accessible to more people. We covered how it has expanded, including how they've built their team, advice for management, hiring, non-coercive marketing, failure, curation vs creation, prioritization as “squiggly brained" people, and podcasting as a medium (they both used the Podcast Kit to start their shows). And then we get into regret, string theory, breakups, collapsing timelines, undefined friendships, and much more. This time we got into: how the only way out is through, self help exhaustion and how we don't need to fix ourselves, how non-duality is a creative act, self forgiveness vs self discipline, pivoting or making a change at the last minute, having the courage to make what she calls the 11th hour change, the way I discovered her in 2013 and her memory of that, cycling and syncing with the moon, what she loves and hates when being interviewed, Krishnamurti on “discipline is a tool that numbs the mind,” on overworking, taking on too many projects, having to stay up late and eat crackers for dinner, her thoughts on time, what she calls tyrant time vs power time, and how she bends time, her feedback on what makes a good interview and much more.
