Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects quality of life in 1-5% of people. The first step in treatment of carpal tunnel should be non-surgical treatment, which includes education, often a steroid injection, and therapy. But what should that therapy look like? In this live webinar, we will discuss carpal tunnel education, assessment and treatment with Rachel Egan, OTR/L, MS, CHT, COMT-UE. Rachel is a Certified Hand Therapist, a Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist, and currently manages operations for 13 NovaCare clinics across Minnesota.Participants in this course will have access to our full clinical decision support page for carpal tunnel treatment that will be updated on an ongoing basis. In this episode, we dive into the common yet often misunderstood issue of hand numbness and tingling, which many people mistakenly attribute solely to carpal tunnel syndrome. Dr. Ar'neka explains why this is rarely the case and what could actually be happening. From pinched nerves in the neck to poor posture and muscle imbalances, the source of hand discomfort often lies higher up the arm or spine than you might think.Dr. Ar'neka walks listeners through the anatomy of nerve pathways and offers insight into how nerve compression in the neck (cervical radiculopathy) could be the real culprit behind your symptoms. Learn how standard nerve conduction tests may miss the root cause, and why addressing the neck and upper spine is essential for lasting relief.Through the case of a frustrated patient—who had been misdiagnosed and was on the brink of neck surgery—Dr. Ar'neka illustrates how targeted assessments and exercises can resolve symptoms without the need for invasive procedures. Tune in for practical advice on self-assessment, treatment options, and tips on improving posture, shoulder stability, and overall spinal health.Book your free 30-minute discovery call to chat about your goals and ways I can support you!Thank you so much for checking out this The Resilient Body Podcast episode. Welcome to The Veterans Disability Nexus, where we provide unique insights and expertise on medical evidence related to VA-rated disabilities.Leah Bucholz, a US Army Veteran, Physician Assistant, & former Compensation & Pension Examiner shares her knowledge related to Independent Medical Opinions often referred to as “Nexus Letters” in support of your pursuit of VA Disability every Wednesday at 7 AM.In this video, Leah explains carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and its relation to VA disability. She begins by describing CTS as a common condition where pressure on the median nerve in the wrist causes symptoms like numbness, tingling, and weakness primarily in the thumb and first three fingers. The condition can be exacerbated by repetitive hand movements or anatomical factors. Leah also discusses how CTS can qualify for VA disability either on a primary basis if it was developed during active duty, or on a secondary basis if another service-connected condition aggravates it. She covers the potential influence of risk factors like obesity and provides a brief overview of how the VA rates the disability severity of CTS, emphasizing the importance of consulting with a veteran service officer or similar expert for claims assistance.

What is Carpal Tunnel and who gets it? - One of the most common hand conditions. - Pressure on something called ‘median nerve' that goes through the wrist. - The nerve goes through a narrow ‘tunnel' (carpal tunnel) in the wrist, and when it gets compressed, you can develop symptoms. - 1-5% of the population get it at some point. Twice as common in women as men. - Most often seen in those between 30 and 60 years of age. - Increased risk with pregnancy, diabetes, wrist injury, obesity, and repetitive wrist activities such as manual labour and sport. How do you recognise it? - People often start to notice it at night: wake up with a tingly or numb hand and have to shake the hand out. Especially prominent in the thumb, and index, and middle fingers. - Sometimes described as electric shock, sometimes holding the steering wheel of car, holding a newspaper. - May be described as pain, and people often get discomfort up the forearm. - Can cause hand weakness and cause people to drop things. How do you diagnose it? - Your doctor will take careful history. - Examine the wrist - Order a nerve conduction study which shows if the nerve is being compressed. - Sometimes an Xray or blood tests are ordered to check for any underlying condition like diabetes. What do you do about? - It depends on the severity. - Often it involves avoiding activities that make it worse, resting the hand if repetitive movements make it worse. - Using a wrist splint to keep wrist straight – especially at night to alleviate symptoms. - If it's severe and ongoing, then refer to the orthopaedic surgeon, who do a simple operation to relieve the pressure on the nerve. In this episode, Dr. Mally emphasizes the importance of looking at the whole body rather than just the symptomatic area. He addresses common conditions like plantar fasciitis and carpal tunnel syndrome with a unique perspective, pointing out typical misdiagnoses and treatments. Moreover, he also stresses the significance of extremity health, particularly the impact of lower limb misalignments on spinal issues, highlighting his revolutionary methods for assessment and treatment that could potentially transform patient care. Key Takeaways: Whole-Body Approach: Chiropractors must assess the entire body, especially since half of the bones are in the hands and feet, which are often neglected. Plantar Fasciitis Insights: Dr. Mally describes the common misconceptions surrounding plantar fasciitis and shares his non-invasive met Leg Length Inequality: A significant contributor to low back pain and other dysfunctions throughout the body could be the disparity in leg lengths. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Myths: Many wrist pain issues are misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome, which often can be resolved through specific chiropractic adjustments rather than surgery. Scapular Dyskinesis: Shoulder problems are frequently connected to issues with the scapula, not necessarily the shoulder itself, revealing the relevance of scapular alignment. More of Dr. Mitch Mally Dr Mitch Mally is a Detroit, Michigan native. He attended his pre-medical training at Wayne State University 1974-1978 and graduated Palmer College in Davenport, IA in October 1981. This first episode will be a little different, as I'm kicking things off by sharing my own baby-feeding story. Why? This caused me to have to use a breast pump right away, supplement with formula, and even experiment with syringe feeding. This was not the breastfeeding experience I dreamed of having. Even after Carpal Tunnel surgery pain persist.
The Little Mermaid, FUBAR, Shazam, and even The Vanderpump Rules (much to Kevin's chagrin...) are up for grabs with a packed house this week. With a larger than usual cast of characters on the episode, the content gets... eclectic. On top of that we have a special addition this week, Jen's daughter Sydney. She joined to be a second voice to review The Little Mermaid, but she turned out to be an even better expert on Five Nights at Freddy's! The episode of course kicks off with The Little Mermaid before devolving into a tangent on movies releasing this coming month before returning to the next scheduled topic, FUBAR. Some comparisons are made to Citadel, but there is a lot of love for Arnold's first series. The conversation then shifts to the much maligned Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Knowing this bunch, you can guess it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. This leads them to another conversation around the much better film, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. Finally, Pete sees his opening and jumps into a conversation around Vanderpump Rules with Jen. Is it a good and stimulating conversation? I suppose it is if reality TV is your jam! It's fun to see how that side operates, though. Sydney then steals the spotlight in schooling the crew on the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy's film. There's a lot to learn here if you're curious, including information about the original games how this film, produced by Blumhouse, could differ from the games. The show finishes off with a quick discussion over some the recent trailers for films coming out the rest of the year, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Oppenheimer, and more. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Surgery for Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is the second-most common musculoskeletal surgery in the U.S., but it has only a 23% success rate. Dr. Prather says there are more effective, non-invasive options that should be explored first. In this episode, you'll learn:—The symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which affect 8 million people per year.—The surprising connection between hormones and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. And how Liver Congestion, Thyroid issues, Diabetes, and Kidney Disease influence Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.—Why Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, and Iodine can make a difference for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome patients when the surgery made no change in their symptoms.—How Dr. Prather finds most of his patients diagnosed by other doctors with Carpel Tunnel Syndrome actually DON'T have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but issues such as Palmaris Longis Syndrome or even a pinched neck.—Why Dr. Prather says appropriate diagnostic steps are so important to correctly diagnose Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but that too many doctors are skipping those for just an Electrodiagnostic test that can lead to a misdiagnosis.—The reason why Dr. Prather believes only 10% of the Carpal Tunnel surgeries are necessary.—How a combination of Chiropractic adjustments, Acupuncture, Physical Rehabilitation, and Nutritional support are used at The Prather Practice to help Carpal Tunnel patients.—Why Auriculotherapy (electro-stimulation of points on the ears) is necessary for anyone who has had Carpal Tunnel pain for over six months.—How the wrist needs to be strengthened through proper Physical Rehabilitation exercises to get back full function. And how a bucket of rice is a great exercise tool to strengthen wrists!—The "nerve flossing" exercise that is "one of the best things" that can be done for Carpal Tunnel pain. And the value of wrist bracing during the night to keep the wrist in a neutral position.http://www.TheVoiceOfHealthRadio.com
