Discover how your personality can be both your biggest asset and greatest stumbling block on today's fascinating episode. When Dr. Laura Hill first encountered research showing that a person's temperament - the baked-in personality traits dictated by their genes - dramatically influences the type and expression of their eating disorder, she was thrilled. For decades, she had felt that eating disorder treatment only focused on external behaviors, while ignoring root causes. But through brain-based research, she was finally able to see how and why disorders begin growing in the first place. This excitement compelled Dr. Hill to devote the next ten years of her career to working alongside colleagues and patients in developing the first-ever eating disorder treatment focused on genetic traits. The result? Temperament Based Treatment with Supports - TBT-S for short. Influenced by Dr. Hill's playful and inquisitive spirit, this approach promises thrilling possibilities for long-term recovery. Who would've thought it'd come to this for our kids at school? When we and our parents were in school, we never practiced active shooter drills or had suicide as a common occurrence. But it's our reality now, a reality we must face and can no longer ignore. And we know every time you hear of a mass shooting occurring at school you think, what if that was my child's school? Or thought what could I have done, or the school done or anyone to change the outcome? We sit down with a teacher, Laura Hill, and iCARE professional, Danica Tietje, as they tell us how to keep our kids safe in school physically and mentally. And once again Conscious Moms wants to thank ALL of our teachers and support staff for all they do to teach, protect, care and love our kids and more in our absence! This week, Yuliana is joined by guest Laura Hill, who opens up the episode to talk about the moment she decided to leave her husband after 30 years of marriage. Having met when she was 19 and he was 10 years her senior, Laura had to mature at a young age, eventually realizing that she had a lot of growing to do, and that this needed to take place outside of her marriage. Since then, she's learned about the importance of therapy and how to allow herself to feel joy. Laura goes on to talk about how beneficial therapy has been, and why it's allowed her to start dating again. And while she finds the dating world much less stressful than she did as a teenager, she feels content for the first time in her life being on her own. She draws the episode to its conclusion by raving about her first year on her own in the past three decades, and how excited she is to return to herself. Episode Highlights: Deciding to divorce her husband Growing up too early as a child Her brother's diagnosis with Schizophrenia The importance of therapy Allowing herself to experience joy Healing childhood trauma The stigma around not having children Dating post-divorce Learning to enjoy your own company Quotes: “The fun part is I kind of get to relive the experience of being in my early 20s, with the knowledge of being in my 50s which is exciting and terrifying at the same time.” “I feel like, because of some of the life experiences that I had as a child, that I never really fit in with my peers anyway.” “I was always guarded. You know, I had friends, but there was always kind of this shell that I had on.” ”In ending that marriage, I've just kind of had to sort through everything, not just the marriage, not just that ending, but also really, once and for all, just deal with some of the stuff that I just kind of pushed to the bottom for too long.” “I feel like at six, your personality is pretty solidly formed, but also your soul hasn't been completely crushed by life experiences.” “I can just focus on what I'm dealing with from the past, and put it to bed, and not have to worry about anybody else's reaction to what I'm going through, and I love that.” “I have always felt like things are going too well, something bad is going to happen.” “The good thing about dating now, is, there's no pressure.” Laura's song - “Independent Woman” by Destiny's Child Links: https://www.yulianakimgrant.com/phoenix-tales (Phoenix Tales Homepage) https://www.instagram.com/yulianakimgrantofficial/ (Phoenix Tales on Instagram) https://open.spotify.com/show/1heIpPMsG6HbXXIDLmAnEe (Phoenix Tales on Spotify) https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=322043276201679 (Phoenix Tales on Facebook)

Laura Hill, Communications Editor of the Encyclopedia of Alabama, discusses with Carolyn Hutcheson, In Focus host, two women who figured in Alabama and national history in the Gilded Age.
Episode description: Dr. Laura Hill is an international eating disorder consultant focusing on brain-based eating disorder treatment approaches. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of California, San Diego. She is one of the original founders of the Academy for Eating Disorders and the Director of the organization now known as NEDA from 1990 to 1994. In addition, Dr. Hill is the founder and former President and Chief Executive Officer of The Center for Balanced Living. In this episode of Peace Meal, Dr. Hill introduces an emerging brain-based treatment called Temperament-Based Therapy with Supports (TBT-S). TBT-S helps people with eating disorders understand their unique temperament so that they can use it as a tool for recovery. Distinguishing between traits and symptoms, Dr. Hill explains that temperament includes traits like impulsivity, introversion, and determination, while symptoms include eating disorder behaviors, thoughts, and emotions. She emphasizes that temperament traits are neither good nor bad; what's important is how they are applied. TBT-S helps people with eating disorders and their support people use their traits more productively to aid in recovery. Dr. Hill also talks about the importance of support in treatment and recovery. In the end, she addresses how providers can use TBT-S to complement other treatment approaches. We cover: The basics of Temperament-Based Therapy with Supports (TBT-S) How TBT-S is supported by brain research How people with eating disorders can use TBT-S to express their traits more productively and aid in their recovery The role of support people in the TBT-S model How TBT-S differs from and complements other treatment modalities In Dr. Hill's words: On the traits we're all given: “Traits are genetically endowed. You don't get to choose your trait, you just try to make them better.” On the importance of temperament to eating disorder treatment: “What we are finding is that eating disorders have a huge relapse… Our theory is that the relapses are due to us not addressing the traits enough.” On the difficulty of imagining life without an eating disorder: “When clients say, ‘I can't imagine my life without ED,' they were telling us the truth. I can't imagine my life without my traits because it's who I am.” Learn more about The Emily Program online or by calling 1-888-364-5977. — About the podcast: Peace Meal is a podcast hosted by The Emily Program and Veritas Collaborative that covers topics related to eating disorders, body image, and how society may influence our thinking. In this episode, SooJin and Hannah engage in a rich discussion with soulmates, Laura and Daren Hill. The conversation flows like a slow, meandering river as we challenge ourselves to slow down and be more like water: adaptable, strong, gentle, powerful, vulnerable, interconnected, and expansive. We break down “knowledge” by getting to know our ledges (boundaries) and defining ourselves on our own terms based in our own culture(s). Laura and Daren share how they lead by example, planting seeds to encourage critical thinking and cultivating their kids’ imaginations through education and art. Episode One - Southlake This Week Special Guest - Mayor Laura Hill 11/1/2018
GP, Dr Laura Hill, talks to the frontline NHS staff that look after us on a daily basis in our hospitals and community services. Claire Poustie, who works in a busy Urgent Treatment Centre and paramedic Mark Buckton, join Dr Hill to discuss ways in which we can all be proactive this winter. The lively conversation is filled with examples of where injuries or illness could have been avoided, alongside instances of where people could have found more effective help, faster, had they known the right service to use. They also provide an insight into the challenges faced by NHS services and frontline staff over winter and the Help Us Help You campaign that looks to help people understand the actions they can take to help the NHS help them.
Dr Laura Hill and local healthcare services expert Hollie Poole take a look at proactive care in the community and the support being put in place for patients to better manage their own conditions. They look at how this new way of working can reduce duplication of work and disjointed care for the patient, with a journey instead that sees patients only have to tell their story once. This ensures they receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time, rather than being passed from one service to another.
We feature The Adelaide Show. This epsiode, Thinking Out Loud About Violence Against Women, came about because it struck us that a couple of king hits against men led to new laws and curfews, especially in Kings Cross, meanwhile one woman a week in Australia is killed by a current or former partner and despite seemingly large and bloated Family Services networks, there has been no sudden cut through. Tonight's conversation won't solve the problem but we hope it will model the sorts of conversations we could and should all be having, so we can keep shining light on this issue. Our guests are Advertising creative, Sputnik, and burlesque performer and adult entertainment star, Nona Mona. This week, we have TWO SA Drinks Of The Week from Thug Life Brewing. In IS IT NEWS, Nigel challenges us on stories about gender equality. In 100 Weeks Ago, we take you back to our night with Dougal McFuzzlebutt in his Manchen. And in the musical pilgrimage ... we have a brand new song from Laura Hill. And please consider becoming part of our podcast by joining our Inner Circle. It's an email list. Join it and you might get an email on a Sunday or Monday seeking question ideas, guest ideas and requests for other bits of feedback about YOUR podcast, The Adelaide Show. Email us directly and we'll add you to the list: podcast@theadelaideshow.com.au If you enjoy the show, please leave us a 5-star review in iTunes or other podcast sites, or buy some great merch from our Red Bubble store - The Adelaide Show Shop. Emily Fonnesbeck joins me to talk about an Intuitive Eating (IE) principle that is challenging for many people—#4 how to challenge the food police. We review the various types of Food Police that may be directing traffic in your mind on any given day–from the Ally to the Informant—and how to start distinguishing the foes from the friend. Food police may be most familiar to those who have had an eating disorder. The voices sound a lot like an example provided by Dr. Laura Hill in her TEDx talk on anorexia. Even in the absence of an eating disorder, diet culture employs food policing thoughts that influence how we eat throughout the day. In the episode, we emphasize that restrictive eating is NOT healthy eating, and that not everyone obsesses over food. It is possible to go throughout your day without these food policing thoughts and internal debates. How can we support and empower students to make change happen? How can we empower them to be change-makers who challenge and transform unjust systems? Well, we've gotta dislodge and disrupt the stories of oppression and victim-hood that are so prevalent. We've gotta review and re-frame the ways we talk about ourselves and our communities. We've gotta tell stories of persistence, positivity, hope, joy and achievement. It all starts with re-thinking our business as usual in schools.
