Dr, Mario Garcia, professor of Chicano Studies at UCSB, is a historian who shares his views on the life journalist Ruben Salazar. Salazar was one of the first Mexican-American journalists to work at the Los Angeles Times and cover issues of concern to the Mexican-American community. He also worked as a journalist for Spanish-language TV station KMEX 34. Garcia has studied Salazar and his impact on the Chicano community and activism. Salazar died controversially at the hands of authorities while covering the Chicano Moratorium in 1970, a protest against the Vietnam War. Garcia also talks about the state of race in 2021, the crisis at the border from Central American refugees and a variety of historical topics.
Leon Krauze is a news anchor on Univision's KMEX station in Los Angeles. His writing and other work on U.S. politics and immigration has been featured by such leading publications as The New Yorker, The Daily Beast, Foreign Affairs, The New Republic, Foreign Policy, Newsweek, the Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post. Krauze formerly held the Wallis Annenberg Chair in Journalism at USC. Krauze reflects on the unhealthy state of the American news media in the Age of Trump and beyond. He also shares why the country's reporters and journalists need to ground their writing and truth-telling in the life experiences of everyday people – and not just the insular voices of their peer group and the country's elites. Krauze also explains why the American corporate news media was and continues to be addicted to stories about the "white working class” instead of focusing on nonwhite people and others. Chauncey DeVega does some reflecting and contemplation during a blizzard about the winter of discontent that is America's failing democracy, Trump's impeachment and rigged “trial”, and how the Republican Party is now full-on endorsing right-wing terrorism and other political violence. And Chauncey has a great time exposing the hypocrisy of the apparent white supremacist Republican congresswoman anti-Semite conspiracist Christian fascist Trump cult member Marjorie Taylor Greene and her alleged extramarital affairs including one with a tantric sex guru bodybuilder sword master video game cosplayer who looks like “Zangief” from the Street Fighter series. Fifty years ago, the Chicano Moratorium sought to underscore the costs of the Vietnam War among Latinos. What started out as a peaceful demonstration ended violently. Riot-clad police attacked the crowd, and the crowd pushed back. When it was all over, 400 people were arrested, and four people were dead. One of those killed was Los Angeles Times reporter and KMEX news director Rubén Salazar.
What’s more important than good communication? Even if you know what to say you still have to deliver that message in a manner that is understood by the other person. Imagine you are swimming in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea off the Southern coast of France on a perfect summer’s day. Then all the sudden you hear people yelling “Requin, Requin, Requin!!” and pointing your direction. You have no idea what they are saying but you gather that they must be so impressed with your swimming skills that they want everyone to watch you. Just as you’re filled with so much pride for being the world’s greatest swimmer, you feel a shark swim right beside you. At this very moment, you figure out that “Requin” means shark in French you are in trouble. This is why I think some words need to be international words like SHARK….but I digress. Communication is at the heart of human connection which is fundamental to living a life full of solidarity. Our guest today, Dr. Jose Rodriguez (aka Dr. J) is returning to our podcast for a second time to discuss his awesome Ted Talk titled, “The Power of Solidarity in the Moments of Life”. I love Ted Talks for many reasons and I’m so excited that Dr. J got the opportunity to bring his knowledge to the Tedx audience. We interviewed Dr. J last year in the podcast titled “How to Win Every Argument” and I highly recommend listening to it because Dr. J does a great job explaining how even the smallest of messages matter in the moments of living. For three decades, Dr. J has helped people become better communicators. His work cuts across boundaries in education, business, and contemporary culture.
