The conversation dives deep into the emotional side of entrepreneurship—what it feels like to step away from something you built, how to navigate identity after a major exit, and what founders often overlook when selling their companies. They also unpack practical lessons on CRM systems, client relationships, and how staying top-of-mind can be more valuable than chasing new leads. Seth explains why storytelling is the ultimate business skill, how great service starts with the person answering the phone, and what really moves the needle when building trust with clients. If you focus on doing good work and solving real problems, the right people will come knocking. CRM isn't optional. It's not exciting—but if you're not tracking your relationships and staying top-of-mind, you're leaving a lot on the table. Details matter. Sometimes it's not the pitch, the deck, or the product—it's the person answering your phone that wins you the client. Learn to tell your story. Your story, is what connects people to your business. And if you don't tell it, someone else will—and not the way you want. The exit isn't the end. You've still got to show up, keep growing, and stay aligned with who you are and what you're about.

Hosted by Meny Hoffman, this episode takes us through Jeff's journey from starting his architectural firm in his basement to establishing a successful business that has expanded across 11 states. Jeff shares his story, beginning with his mother's encouragement to pursue architecture, which laid the foundation for his career. His narrative highlights the importance of balancing creative ambitions with business acumen, a challenge many in the creative industry face. Jeff candidly discusses the realization that a successful business requires not just design talent but also a keen understanding of business operations and growth strategies. Listeners will benefit from Jeff's exploration of bridging the gap between creativity and business efficiency, emphasizing the necessity of delegation and creating a company culture that fosters both innovation and accountability. The discussion provides practical insights on maintaining creativity within structured timelines, as well as incentivizing employees through ownership and profit-sharing models. Additionally, Jeff delves into his audacious project in Florida—developing a new community with thousands of housing units, aiming to address the housing crisis in the Jewish community. This ambitious undertaking reflects Jeff's vision of making a lasting impact beyond financial success. This episode is a treasure trove of actionable strategies for business owners and creative professionals alike, offering guidance on building a business that harmonizes creative passion with strategic growth. Tune in to discover how you can nurture a successful business environment while still pursuing creative excellence and community impact. Whether you're starting out or looking to scale your business, Jeff's journey offers valuable lessons in entrepreneurship, resilience, and visionary thinking.   05:15 - Architecture Meets Business Strategy 08:33 - Balancing Creativity and Business 11:36 - Streamline Proposals with PandaDoc 14:42 - Balancing Creativity and Project Timelines 18:59 - Ownership Fuels Business Growth 20:02 - Let's Talk Business Sponsorship 23:31 - Unpredictable Puzzle Planning 26:47 - Affordable Housing Community Vision 30:32 - Importance of Written Agreements 33:33 - Diversity in Partnerships: Respect Differences 38:26 - Creative Freedom and Aligned Vision 39:26 - Partner Collaboration: Plan & Document https://ptex.co/pandadoc https://www.risearchitecture.com/   Remember that in the creative space, you need to give your employees the leeway to think, because they want to feel that they are still being creative. If you stifle that creativity, and say, “You must do it my way,” you're likely to lose a lot of people pretty quickly. One of the best ways to avoid the conflict between the business side of things - which demands creativity according to a specific timetable - and the creative side, is to suggest that your creatives give you their own timetable, rather than asking them to hew to one that the business people made. This increases accountability and personal responsibility, and also does wonders for the company culture. The most important element in choosing a partner is to make sure that you have the same vision. If every detail is perfect but you each see the end goal differently, then the partnership will fall apart, with potentially disastrous results. When you work together with a partner, you absolutely must hammer out the details in advance, and put them in writing - even if your partner is your best friend in the world - so that you both understand what's expected of each of you. If you don't, the business may fall apart - or on the contrary, it may work great, but you're doing all the work even though you're splitting the profits.

In today's rerun episode of Let's Talk Business, we're excited to revisit a foundational conversation with Adam Lean, a seasoned accountant, business owner, and founder of the CFO Project. Hosted by Meny Hoffman, this episode focuses on the crucial importance of understanding and managing business finances, especially for entrepreneurs driven by passion rather than numbers.   Adam Lean delves into the common challenges faced by business owners who often prioritize their craft over financial management. This candid discussion illuminates how neglecting crucial metrics can undermine business success, and emphasizes the vital role of cash flow in sustaining and growing a business. Listeners will gain valuable insights into essential financial strategies. Adam breaks down the importance of tracking cash flow over mere revenue or profit, explaining that actual cash on hand is what keeps a business afloat. He introduces key performance metrics—like the number of leads, conversion rates, retention rates, purchase frequency, and average purchase amounts—that drive cash flow and highlights the need for regular monitoring using tools like scorecards. This episode also clarifies the distinction between accountants and CFOs, drawing attention to the proactive, strategic planning that CFOs provide, which goes beyond mere number tracking. The conversation underscores the benefits of virtual CFO services for small and medium-sized businesses, offering a cost-effective way to gain strategic financial insight. Through practical examples, including a roofing company that transformed its business by focusing on targeted financial metrics, Adam underscores the power of weekly tracking and adjustment over waiting for annual financial reports. Tune in to uncover actionable advice and essential wisdom for mastering your business's financial health. Whether you are an emerging entrepreneur or an established business owner, this episode is filled with indispensable strategies to enhance your financial literacy and business performance.   00:00 - Business reports often confuse owners, making it difficult to take actionable steps. 06:12 - Upgrade to PandaDoc for efficient document creation. 07:37 - Miscalculated margins due to overlooked financial insights. 13:31 - Leads, conversion, retention, purchase frequency rates. 15:16 - CFO vs. Accountant: Broader business performance tracking. 19:03 - Strategies to improve gross profit percentage highlighted. 21:49 - Involvement ensures spending yields profitable returns. 27:17 - Successful entrepreneurs are determined and persistent. 28:33 - Helping clients succeed financially as trusted advisors.    Implement scorecards to track weekly performance, helping you make informed decisions in real-time rather than waiting for quarterly or annual reports. Understand that accountants focus on historical data and compliance, while CFOs offer strategic planning for future growth and profitability. If hiring a full-time CFO is too costly, consider virtual CFO services to get strategic financial advice at a fraction of the cost. Evaluate all expenses to ensure they're contributing to making money. Avoid cutting costs randomly, as this could harm business operations. Instead of relying solely on industry standards, benchmark your performance against your past results to gauge progress and improvement accurately.   https://ptex.co/pandadoc https://thecfoproject.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamlean/
