In this episode, hosted by Cedarville sophomore journalism student Balen Allain and journalism professor Jeff Gilbert, we discuss how other writing advocates for ideas and actions, but newswriting should be in stark contrast to those aims.

On February 13, 2017, teenage friends Liberty German and Abigail Williams went for a walk near Delphi, Indiana, but never returned home. The next day, their bodies were found in a clearing, victims of a brutal murder. Liberty recorded a blurry video of the man approaching them in her final moments, capturing his gruff command: “Down the hill.” The haunting clues sparked public obsession and rampant speculation online, while investigators explored every lead. Send us a Text Message.Hello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome San Diego's Bob and Holly, creators in 2020 of Innocents Abroad, YouTube channel, Facebook group and page, and Instagram platform. Their goal is to grow appreciation for discovery, diversity and conversation about travel, with a concentrated focus on cruising. Bob and Holly note that, “Engaging with other cultures is no small thing to us—breaking down cultural barriers is what drives our travel…” To underscore that, their catchphrase, which I love is—an optimistic outlook of humanity through travel and exposure to other cultures. Quite the way with words, Bob and Holly. Some of our literature-minded listeners recognize that their brand, Innocents Abroad, recalls someone else with quite the way with words, Mark Twain. It is a homage to Bob's favorite writer—the channel was named for Mark Twain's outlook on equality. In his 1869 book, The Innocents Abroad, Twain wrote, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." (This was also the epigraph set at the opening of my second cruising book, Cruising Interrupted amzn.to/3seFU8y.) On their channel Innocents Abroad is serious about their craft. Their style is visual storytelling; cinematography of very high quality, combined with choregraphed audio, and historical facts. How a film looks and sounds is very important to them. Journalistic integrity is of utmost importance to them. They emphasize that every cruise and land trip has been and will be out of their own pocket without exception. (They wouldn't even accept free WIFI to facilitate their vlogging about their travels.) Bob and Holly have an amazing cruise background. 61 cruises to-date including very high-end cruise lines, with plenty more booked. In fact, what motivated me to reach out to Innocents Abroad—Bob and I are friends and followers on social media—he posted that he and Holly were on a 120-day (!) grand tour of cruising in Europe and a wee bit in the Caribbean. They just arrived home, and I am delighted to bring Bob and Holly to the listeners.Support the Show.Support thejoyofcruisingpodcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/supporters/newSupport Me https://www.buymeacoffee.com/drpaulthContact Me https://www.thejoyofcruising.net/contact-me.htmlBook Cruises https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingPodcast-BookACruiseUS Orders (coupon code joyofcruisingpodcast)The Joy of Cruising https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingCruising Interrupted https://bit.ly/CruisingInterruptedThe Joy of Cruising Again https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingAgainIntl Orders via Amazon

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Paper Summary: The Effects of Communicating Uncertainty on Public Trust in Facts and Numbers, published by AI Impacts on July 9, 2024 on LessWrong. by Anne Marthe van der Bles, Sander van der Linden, Alexandra L. J. Freeman, and David J. Spiegelhalter. (2020) https://www.pnas.org/doi/pdf/10.1073/pnas.1913678117. Summary: Numerically expressing uncertainty when talking to the public is fine. It causes people to be less confident in the number itself (as it should), but does not cause people to lose trust in the source of that number. Uncertainty is inherent to our knowledge about the state of the world yet often not communicated alongside scientific facts and numbers. In the "posttruth" era where facts are increasingly contested, a common assumption is that communicating uncertainty will reduce public trust. However, a lack of systematic research makes it difficult to evaluate such claims. Within many specialized communities, there are norms which encourage people to state numerical uncertainty when reporting a number. This is not often done when speaking to the public. The public might not understand what the uncertainty means, or they might treat it as an admission of failure. Journalistic norms typically do not communicate the uncertainty. But are these concerns actually justified? This can be checked empirically. Just because a potential bias is conceivable does not imply that it is a significant problem for many people. This paper does the work of actually checking if these concerns are valid. Van der Bles et al. ran five surveys in the UK with a total n = 5,780. A brief description of their methods can be found in the appendix below. Respondents' trust in the numbers varied with political ideology, but how they reacted to the uncertainty did not. People were told the number either without mentioning uncertainty (as a control), with a numerical range, or with a verbal statement that uncertainty exists for these numbers. The study did not investigate stating p-values for beliefs. Exact statements used in the survey can be seen in Table 1, in the appendix. The best summary of their data is in their Figure 5, which presents results from surveys 1-4. The fifth survey had smaller effect sizes, so none of the shifts in trust were significant. Expressing uncertainty made it more likely that people perceived uncertainty in the number (A). This is good. When the numbers are uncertain, science communicators should want people to believe that they are uncertain. Interestingly, verbally reminding people of uncertainty resulted in higher perceived uncertainty than numerically stating the numerical range, which could mean that people are overestimating the uncertainty when verbally reminded of it. The surveys distinguished between trust in the number itself (B) and trust in the source (C). Numerically expressing uncertainty resulted in a small decrease in the trust of that number. Verbally expressing uncertainty resulted in a larger decrease in the trust of that number. Numerically expressing uncertainty resulted in no significant change in the trust of the source. Verbally expressing uncertainty resulted in a small decrease in the trust of the source. The consequences of expressing numerical uncertainty are what I would have hoped: people trust the number a bit less than if they hadn't thought about uncertainty at all, but don't think that this reflects badly on the source of the information. Centuries of human thinking about uncertainty among many leaders, journalists, scientists, and policymakers boil down to a simple and powerful intuition: "No one likes uncertainty." It is therefore often assumed that communicating uncertainty transparently will decrease public trust in science. In this program of research, we set out to investigate whether such claims have any empirical ...
Stringers and the Journalistic Field: Marginalities and Precarious News Labour in Small-Town India (Routledge, 2023) is one of the first ethnographic works on small-town stringers or informal news workers in Indian journalism. It explores existing practices and cultures in the field of local journalism and the roles and spaces stringers occupy. The book outlines the caste, gender, class and region-based biases in the production of Indian-language journalism with a specific focus on stringers working in Telugu dailies in small towns or ‘mofussil' areas of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, states in south India. Further, it captures their daily work and processes of news production, and the precarious lives they often lead while working in small towns or mofussils. The author, by using Bourdieu's field theory, introduces the journalistic practices of stringers working on the margins and how they negotiate the complex hierarchies that exist within the journalistic field and outside it. This book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of ethnography, media sociology, journalism and media studies, labour studies and Area studies, especially South Asian studies. As the newly named Brazil bureau chief for the New York Times, Ernesto Londoño had hit a journalistic zenith. Yet, he had never been more depressed. Contemplating suicide and eager for a way out of his sadness, Londoño signed up for an Amazonian ayahuasca retreat. He was initially skeptical of the drug's ability to alter his mental health trajectory, but ultimately that experience ended up changing Londoño's life. That story centers his new book, “Trippy,” which also looks at the promise and peril of medicinal psychedelics. Guests: Ernesto Londoño, author, "Trippy: The Peril and Promise of Medicinal Psychedelics"; national correspondent, the New York Times; Londoño has reported from Iraq and Afghanistan
