In this week's edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast, we're at San Miguel Mexican Grill and Bar in Fayetteville talking with Jesus Rodriguez... but FIRST?!?! FOOD NEWS! Wu Zhao finally opens in Bentonville. We'll hear from owners Barry Furuseth and Vincent Lim. The 9th Downtown Springdale Street Dinner took place Saturday night. Fossil Cove Brewing became a teenager! It looks like a local Indian food chain has closed. If you have a tip or have heard any food or beverage news, feel free to shoot me a note. Just look for Flavors of Northwest Arkansas on Instagram, Facebook or TikTok. You can also shoot me an email at FlavorsOfNWA@Gmail.com. Jose Rodriguez emigrated from a small town outside of San Miguel in Mexico and made his way to Houston to get into the restaurant business. He started at the very bottom and made his way from absolutely nothing. He met the love of his life in Houston and now some 40+ years later, their kids have kids, and though he doesn't know what the word “retire” means, his kids have taken over their 2 restaurants. La Hacienda, named after the restaurant in Houston where he learned the trade, and San Miguel, of course the resort town near his hometown (and there might be something new on the way). One of Jose's sons, Jesus Rodriguez, grew up in Fayetteville as one of 6 kids, went to Brightwater, and now for the most part runs San Miguel... We hear from Jesus about how his family ended up in Arkansas from Houston... He'll also tell us about growing up at La Hacienda, how and why he decided to go to Brightwater, and of course, we talk food. That's next, here on the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas.

As a military veteran or first responder, you need to be planning and implementing strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. In this Flashback Friday episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, we recap Episode 56 with Jose Rodriguez. Jose grew up knowing he was going to be a cop. He graduated high school early and began working as a volunteer with the local fire department. At that time the police officers were also firefighters and Jose saw this as a way to get his foot in the door. After almost 2 years as a volunteer and eventually a reserve officer, he was hired as a full-time police officer in 1998 – he was 19 years old at the time. In 2011 he learned of a medical condition which forced his medical retirement in 2012. With no plan for a transition he put together a resume and started sending it out. Today he is an HR Director. Most important, as much as he misses being a cop, he enjoys his life more today. Since being forced into a medical retirement he's been able to spend more quality time with his family and his passion, working on cars. She decided to take a step back from her career to raise her daughter, Maya. During this time, she looked for children's clothing that would celebrate her Latina culture but could not find anything but stereotypical, cheesy designs. Isabel is currently working to solve this problem through the creation of mayaluna.Vanessa Arroyo is the creator of SERES footwear and is a shoe design & development specialist that has worked in the industry for over ten years. She was born in Chicago to a family of Mexican immigrants, and in 2016 she relocated from New York City to Guanajuato where she continued her work in footwear. This was an unexpected journey of self discovery where she experienced a number of epiphanies - all of which challenged her thoughts on what it means to be a Mexicana born in the USA. She thought about what it means to be "ni de aqui ni de alla" as the saying goes and she realized, to be is ... ser es... all of the versions of her at once.Jose Rodriguez, an art school dropout, started Calaca Coffee with his friend Christian. The two started the business as a way to foster community and have a safe place for anyone to enjoy a nice cup of coffee. Initially, the pair had a coffee garden but unfortunately had to shut it down. Now they are trying to scale up their direct-to-consumer program.
