They're joined by three visionary guests: Sheldon Fernandez, CEO of Darwin AI, Kory Mathewson, Senior Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, and Gillian Hadfield, a Schmidt Sciences AI2050 Senior Fellow. Together, they explore the opportunities and barriers in AI adoption, the creative applications of AI, and the role Canada must play in the future of AI.This episode is packed with insights for business leaders, policymakers, and anyone curious about how AI is changing our world. Whether you're an AI enthusiast or a skeptic, this episode will challenge your thinking on the role of technology in shaping the future.Tune in to learn how AI is both an opportunity and a responsibility, and how Canada can lead the charge in this new innovation era.
How did a class clown turned award-winning comedian light up the artificial intelligence research community at the intersection of theatre and machine learning? Kory is a Senior Research Scientist with Alphabet's DeepMind and an Associate Industry Member at Mila – the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute in Montreal, Canada. He is a Lab Scientist with Creative Destruction Lab at the University of Toronto, where he supports massively scalable science-based startup ventures. Kory also serves as a Special Advisor to the National Research Council of Canada. We talk about the importance of self-expression, the intersection of creativity and technical rigour, how many different types of laughter there are, and his vision for the future of improv. Spoiler alert - it involves robots!
Join us for our podcast on expressive vocalizations and machine learning, where we discuss the powerful, contagious non-word utterances like yelps, laughs, and sighs that play a critical role in our social and emotional lives and provide new channels for human-computer interaction. Our guests include Hume AI CEO Dr. Alan Cowen, Creative Destruction Lab and DeepMind research scientist Dr. Kory Mathewson, Dr. Gauthier Gidel, professor at the Université de Montréal and Mila faculty member, and Hume AI Research Scientists Dr. Panagiotis Tzirakis and Alice Baird. Hume AI is proud to co-organize ICML's Expressive Vocalization (ExVo) Workshop and Competition. Bringing together leading emotion scientists and AI researchers, ExVo explores the machine learning problem of understanding and generating vocal bursts—a wide range of expressive nonverbal vocalizations such as laughs, sighs, grunts, cries, screams, oohs, ahhs, and huhs (to name but a few). The challenge is co-sponsored by Hume AI, Mila, and the National Film Board of Canada. Competition info: https://www.competitions.hume.ai/exvo2022 The Feelings Lab, presented by Hume AI, explores the frontier of emotion science and its lessons for creating a more empathic future. We'll discover how scientists and technologists are integrating empathy into social media tools, robots, digital art, and more, with the goal of building equity and compassion into these ubiquitous AI systems. Each week, join our panel of expert hosts, and emotionally attuned guests, to learn how empathic technologies are shaping the modern world. Kory Mathewson’s (BSc ‘10, MSc ‘14, PhD ‘19) career path has taken him from the stage to the lab - but it’s not as long a journey as you might expect. We talked to this self-described polymath about what improv and AI have in common, the role of creativity in science, and what, exactly, a research scientist at Google’s DeepMind lab does. Albertans are bracing for a tough budget today. Official Opposition finance critic Shannon Phillips lays out what she's expecting to see from the UCP, and what the NDP would do differently. Tens of thousands of seniors (and their families) were unable to successfully schedule vaccinations online yesterday, as Alberta Health Services' website couldn't keep up to demand. Enter the brilliant Dr. Kory Mathewson. The DeepMind research scientist took it upon himself to fix the problem ("in six minutes"), and share his solution with the world via Twitter. He explains how and why he did it, and responds to an outpouring of gratitude from complete strangers. We've been talking about sustainable farming and ranching in past weeks, as well as food waste. What about when those world collide? Ranchers Ryan Kasko and Jill Burkhardt tell us how their beef operations benefit from thinking "outside the farm". Speaking of cows, what's up with butter lately? Why is the entire world talking about it, including Jimmy Fallon, the BBC, and the New York Times? Julie Van Rosendaal, the food columnist driving this international story, joins to tell us how it all came about (and sort out what it means for consumers). 12:13 - MLA Shannon Phillips 42:11 - Dr. Kory Mathewson 1:09:06 - Ryan Kasko & Jill Burkhardt 1:37:04 - Julie Van Rosendaal
