Is Alberta inching closer to the exit door? Premier Danielle Smith insists she's a federalist — but her government's latest moves are making it easier for citizens to trigger a referendum on independence. With fresh polling from the Angus Reid Institute showing a majority of UCP voters in favour of holding a secession vote, the big question is: is this a tactical play to reset Alberta's relationship with Ottawa, or a strategy to keep her party's restless base onside? This week, West of Centre host Kathleen Petty unpacks Smith's political high-wire act: is she turning up the heat, or genuinely trying to cool things down? We also dive into growing speculation that the premier is laying the groundwork for an early provincial election.Joining the conversation: former UCP executive director Brad Tennant, former Alberta NDP cabinet minister Shannon Phillips, and editorial writer Doug Firby. Plus, a look ahead to key byelections and whether Mark Carney's new Liberal government might try to smooth things over with Alberta by handing one (or both) of its newly elected Liberal MPs a cabinet post.
Canada has experienced a disruptive start to 2025, with PM Justin Trudeau stepping down as Liberal leader, prompting a leadership campaign and a prorogued parliament . With a federal election looming, Canadians, among other problems, are facing affordability issues and to top it off, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 25-percent tariffs on a wide range of imports from Canada and 10-percent tariffs on oil and gas. Those US tariffs were set to begin Feb 4, but have been delayed by at least 30 days as the countries work together on border security and trade imbalance. However, for many Canadians, the potential for a trade war between two longtime allies continues to fuel anger, despair and confusion over what may be coming next. The speaker will try to make sense of it all, while analyzing the response from governments and political leaders including Liberal leadership contenders. Speaker: Shannon Phillips Shannon brings over two decades of experience in public policy, governance, and leadership in energy and the environment to her role as a partner at Meredith Boessenkool & Phillips. Her experience includes serving as the Minister of Environment and Parks and Minister Responsible for the Climate Change Office in Rachel Notley's government, where she was responsible for climate policy, conservation expansion, and Indigenous reconciliation efforts. She also established Alberta's first standalone Ministry for the Status of Women. From 2015-19, Shannon was the driving force behind Alberta's Climate Leadership Plan. Phillips led the coal phase-out, renewable energy expansion, and energy efficiency programs that boosted Alberta's GDP and created jobs across the province. Shannon also represented Alberta on the national and international stage, including leading delegations to UN climate conferences in Paris and Marrakech. Phillips won three elections as a progressive woman candidate in Southern Alberta – an accomplishment most would have dismissed as far-fetched just a decade ago. She is an experienced and successful campaigner, organizer and grassroots leader. She continues to focus on mentorship and training of a new generation of activists and candidates. Shannon is a strong communicator in both of Canada's official languages, a skill that serves her well in her extensive policy and advocacy work on the national and international stage. Deeply committed to her community, Shannon continues to strengthen her relationship with the Blackfoot people of southern Alberta and is a Blackfoot Headdress holder and recipient of a Blackfoot name. In addition to her work in the community, Shannon serves as an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Political Science at the University of Lethbridge and was recognized as a YWCA Woman of Distinction in 2017. Shannon enjoys spending time with her two sons outdoors, particularly in the Canadian Rockies.

Pretty much everybody agrees: the consumer carbon tax is dead in Canada. Mark Carney's getting credit for it in the polls, which has to drive Pierre Poilievre crazy. In this episode, two of Canada's most credible voices on the matter debate: Who ultimately killed the carbon tax? 3:30 | Shannon Phillips and Ken Boessenkool dig into the carbon tax, the UCP "CorruptCare" scandal, low oil prices and the Alberta budget, Mark Carney and China, Pierre Poilievre and crowd sizes, and the inevitable fate of the federal NDP. Many Albertans say they don't feel understood or appreciated by the rest of Canada, but as U.S. tensions deepen, so too do conversations about national unity. As part of The Current's election series, Crossroads: Coast to Coast with Canadian Voters, Matt Galloway travels to Red Deer in the heart of Alberta, to hear what matters most to voters in this election.Galloway visits a fracking site, a wind farm and a cattle farm to talk to voters who say Canada isn't making the most of its natural resources, and is ignoring an “amazing opportunity to feed and fuel the world.” At a cafe where newcomers take English lessons, there's optimism that Canada is one of the best places to live on earth, but fears that we've forgotten how to talk to each other. And in a staunchly Conservative area, one voter shares what it's like to be an NDP supporter. Then, three oil and gas workers share what they think the rest of the country gets wrong about their industry — and their province. And political strategists Shannon Phillips and Michael Solberg dig into the impact of Trump's threats and tariffs, and whether Edmonton-born Liberal Leader Mark Carney is gaining any ground from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.
Has the average Canadian learned anything about the major parties' election platforms, with talk of Trump and tariffs taking up so much space? In this episode, our Real Talk Round Table panelists highlight the most significant policy announcements to date - including Conservative and Liberal housing plans. 3:45 | Shannon Phillips and Ken Boessenkool dig into Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre's proposals for affordable housing and Jagmeet Singh's Canada Victory Bonds. Tariffs today, tariffs tomorrow, or tariffs on April 1? As Donald Trump keeps Canada guessing, Ottawa scrambles to prepare a response. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is spotlighting border security, while federal leaders hint at a bailout package for businesses and workers — echoing pandemic-era relief. Speaking of pandemic flashbacks, Alberta's COVID response task force report is stirring old debates on masking, vaccines and government overreach. This week, conservative policy advisor Ken Boessenkool and former NDP cabinet minister Shannon Phillips join host Jason Markusoff to unpack the political manoeuvring behind the tariff standoff and a pandemic reckoning five years in the making. Later, energy expert Jackie Forrest of the ARC Energy Research Institute challenges Trump's claim that the U.S. doesn't need Canadian oil — and explains why it's not that simple.

Zach Abraham on what just happened in the markets and what the kink porn on the white house lawn tells us about the coming economic storm. Zach Abraham says the chaos economy is at such a precarious point, he is selling any stocks that go up and buying bonds. He's very clear, Zach is not telling us he knows the future, he is explaining that there is no logical or mathematical reason for stocks of companies losing massive amounts of money to continue going up while companies with solid fundamentals and tons of clear cash-flow are down. But, there is a reason it's happening. As Zach says, “as a nation's morality goes, so goes its economy.” I called it the “transing of the American economy.” A nation where people have been spiritually captured into pretending boys are girls, racism is not racism, kindergarteners need to learn how to masturbate is a nation that cannot have a solid footing in anything, let alone finance. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly summit on Neutralizing Workplace Racism 06/16/23. We inch closer to "Juneteenth" 2023, so Gus suggests non-white people be alert for tacky comments from White co-workers. A number of listeners have shared anecdotes about Race Soldier colleagues lobbing snide remarks about "negro holidays" and slavery this time of year. If you're on vacation this coming Monday, enjoy your time away from work and invest those free hours constructively. Also, Gus saw another report on the "Silver Tsunami" - the increasing number of aging White people who are nearing retirement age in their professions. This is potentially making job vacancies for non-white people, or leaving a host of critical positions, like firefighter, vacant. The Covid-19 pandemic allegedly accelerated the rate of retirement for many workers. We'll also review the triumph of Shannon Phillips. Way back in 2018, Phillips was terminated from her position as manager of a Philadelphia Starbucks after enforcement officials were called in response to two black males being in the cafe. The conflict sparked protests, sensitivity training, and a lecture from hip-hop artist Common at the Starbuck's Seattle headquarters. Phillips was fired in response to the conflict. However, this week Phillips nabbed a $25 million court victory, where a judge ruled this White Woman was a victim of workplace discrimination. #KeepItProfessional #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Things just keep getting worse for Starbucks. First, they have their woke leftist customers up in arms because they're being accused of canceling pride displays, Now, they have to pay a former employee tens of millions of dollars because she was fired for being white! Highlights: ● “A former Starbucks regional manager, Shannon Phillips, has just been awarded over $25 million dollars after a federal jury found that she was fired due to her race.” ● “What this court decision highlighted is what's widely known today as ‘reverse discrimination' which is generally defined as the unfair treatment and social exclusion of the dominant ethnicity! Unfortunately, reverse discrimination appears to be an intrinsic characteristic of modern liberal society and its dedication to what's called multiculturalism." ● “Could you imagine celebrating white history month or singing the white national anthem before the super bowl?” Timestamps: [02:21] Starbucks began unfairly punishing white employees to demonstrate their supposed repentance [06:57] Multiculturalism, often if not always, involves reverse discrimination [07:44] Could you imagine celebrating white history month? Before we get to the decision, Rick Warren and Al Mohler had a mini debate on the issue… https://twitter.com/i/status/1668999347420164100 - Play Video And here’s the result! https://www.christianitytoday.com/news/2023/june/saddleback-sbc-women-pastors-appeal-rick-warren-southern-ba.html Southern Baptists Reject Rick Warren’s Saddleback Appeal Nobody expected Rick Warren’s appeal to be successful—not even Rick Warren. But he still stood up in front of 13,000 Southern Baptists gathered in New Orleans to make his case. For messengers at the SBC annual meeting, employing women pastors was not an agree-to-disagree issue. A vast majority—88 percent—voted to uphold the decision made back in February to disfellowship Saddleback. The vote concludes two years of scrutiny and criticism toward the California megachurch for ordaining female pastors from its stage, welcoming a female teaching pastor to preach on Sundays, and naming a female campus pastor. This was the only chance to appeal. After the vote, Warren said he wasn’t counting the appeal to succeed. Instead, “I wanted to push the conversation that’s been stagnant for years.” “I wanted to speak up for millions of Southern Baptist women … I believe their spiritual gifts, their leadership gifts and talents, are being wasted,” said Warren, who considered himself well-positioned to make the case given his prominence, “tender heart, and thick skin.” But the messengers were largely unified against the appeal. As Warren offered up arguments for Saddleback, Southern Baptists online and at events ahead of the meeting countered with their own defense of the SBC’s historic stance and their own complementarian convictions. The messengers also voted to uphold decisions to disfellowship Fern Creek Baptist, another church removed for having a female pastor, and Freedom Church, which was found to have mishandled abuse allegations. At the direction of SBC president Bart Barber, the messengers were largely silent as the results of the appeals were announced on Wednesday morning. A small smattering of applause broke out from the back of the giant hall when the Saddleback results were read. This year was the first time Southern Baptists have removed churches over female pastors, declaring Saddleback and four others “no longer in friendly cooperation” with the convention. https://notthebee.com/article/paul-ryan-calls-on-gop-to-stop-focusing-on-the-culture-war-calling-it-polarizing Paul Ryan calls on GOP to stop focusing on the culture war, calling it "polarizing." Guys, pack it in! Well, at least we got that GDP under control! Of course, the thinks Ryan cares about are important. But if we cave on the culture war, what exactly are we fighting for? https://thepostmillennial.com/former-philly-starbucks-manager-wins-25-6-million-after-being-fired-for-being-white?utm_campaign=64487 Former Philly Starbucks manager wins $25.6 million after being fired for being white A former regional manager for Starbucks was awarded $25.6 million on Monday after a federal jury in New Jersey unanimously found that she had been fired because of her race. Shannon Phillips, who is white, received $25 million in punitive damages and $600,000 in compensatory damages. She is reportedly seeking further compensation for lost wages. Phillips was terminated in 2018 in response to backlash against Starbucks after two black men, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, were arrested while waiting for a business associate at one of the many Philadelphia locations she oversaw. Employees at the Center City Philadelphia cafe called the police on the pair after they asked to use the washroom but hadn't ordered anything. Phillips claimed in her 2020 lawsuit that her firing had been racially motivated. She said she was targeted despite not having had any direct influence on the decision to call the police. Her allegations were backed up by the testimony of Paul Sykes, the black supervisor of the employee who made the 911 call that day. Sykes argued that the fact he did not face any disciplinary action while Phillips was let go showed that Starbucks had acted in a manor that exhibited racial bias. The coffee giant tried to claim that Phillips had been fired for being an ineffective regional manager, but they failed to convince even a single member of the jury. The Starbucks employee in 2018 had called 911 claiming Nelson and Robinson were "trespassing" after they violated company policy by asking to use the washroom, which they said was only for paying customers. Cops showed up, and hauled the pair out of the cafe as onlookers recorded the interaction on their phones. The men were released from custody hours later after the district attorney found that they hadn't committed any crimes. The incident sparked backlash against Starbucks, and Phillips alleged that she had been used as a scapegoat by the company to show that they were not racist. Nonetheless, protests persisted, and Starbucks eventually shut down hundreds of locations across the country for one day so that staff could undergo racial bias training. Nelson and Robinson settled with Starbucks for an undisclosed amount. Now finally, it’s time for my favorite topic sports! https://fox8.com/sports/denver-nuggets-win-first-nba-title-beat-miami-heat-in-five-games/ Denver Nuggets win first NBA title, beat Miami Heat in five games The Denver Nuggets have won their first NBA championship in team history, beating the Miami Heat in Game 5 on Monday. The Nuggets edged out the Heat, 94-89, in Denver, overcoming dreadful shooting and a late flurry from Miami’s Jimmy Butler. Center Nikola Jokic, had 28 points and 16 rebounds for the Nuggets, who missed 20 of their first 22 3-point attempts and seven of their first 13 free throws but figured out how to close out the series on their home floor. Jokic, who finished as the runner-up to Joel Embiid in the MVP race, was named to the All-NBA Second Team. He nearly averaged a triple-double over the season with 24.5 points, 11.8 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game over the 69 games he played. Butler scored eight straight points to help the Heat take an 87-86 lead with 2:45 left after trailing by seven. He made two more free throws with 1:58 remaining to help Miami regain a one-point lead. Then, Bruce Brown got an offensive rebound and tip-in to give the Nuggets the lead for good. Butler finished with 21 points for the Heat. The Nuggets finished the regular season with 53 wins and 29 losses, the best record in the Western Conference and fourth-best overall for the NBA. They were one of 11 teams to have never won a championship. This is the first NBA championship for the Nuggets, who joined the league from the American Basketball Association in 1976 along with the New York (now Brooklyn) Nets, Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs.

In this episode we have Shannon Phillips back to talk about innovation management and what it means to be an innovative company. Shannon is fascinated by people and how they think and he wants to challenge everyone to look at how they innovate and why. Thank you for listening to the Leaders, Innovators and Big Ideas podcast, supported by Rainforest Alberta. The podcast that highlights those people who are contributing to and/or supporting the innovation ecosystem in Alberta. Host: Al Del Degan I have been involved in software development for more than 25 years. I have started companies, lead companies and worked for companies - doing many different things. I am honored to be considered a leader in Alberta's innovation ecosystem, and I give back as much, and often as I can. When I am not working or podcasting, you will find me pursuing my passions of photography, crypto investing, and wood working along with the occasional round of golf. Guest: Shannon Phillips with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, thinks like a scientist to better understand human behavior and decision making. He's your go-to for innovation management, organizational change management and organizational behavior strategic planning, and innovation. With an Alberta election on the way this spring, Rachel Notley and Alberta's NDP are promising to be a stable, caring, and competent government, focused on addressing the issues that matter to Lethbridge like lowering the cost of living and rebuilding public health care. With Danielle Smith's government in a state of chaos, MLA Shannon Phillips will provide an alternative vision for a stronger Lethbridge and what she would prefer to see for her constituents and fellow Albertans. Speaker: Shannon Phillips, MLA, Lethbridge West Moderator: Dylon Purcell Shannon Phillips was elected MLA for Lethbridge West as a member of Alberta's New Democrats in 2015 and re-elected in 2019. She has been nominated by her party for the 2023 election again. MLA Phillips served as Minister of Environment and Parks from 2015-2019 and now chairs the Public Accounts Committee and serves as Opposition Critic for Treasury Board and Finance. She lives in Lethbridge with her two sons.
You weren't “wrong” you just know more now. We all know that feeling when we try to solve a problem and find ourselves repeatedly hitting the same wall. We circle around to different solutions, but the initial problem naggingly persists. How do we shake out of that cycle and find new, better solutions? I spoke about this with three veteran problem solvers on this edition of Quick Hits. “Inviting somebody else in is very powerful,” advised business coach Shellie Berry. “If you're ruminating and you can't see it with fresh eyes, you need a fresh perspective. It doesn't mean that they're right, just that they see it differently. That can help you set aside how you're seeing it.” Simon Coles, CEO of Amphora Research Systems, concurred, provided that they are “the right brains with the right attitude.” Many CEOs and entrepreneurs have a hard time finding quality people to brainstorm with because they do not have the right perspective and background to speak on a particular problem. But whatever the background, we all agreed that the best approach to solve a problem is to not see it as a problem in the first place, but as an opportunity. As Shannon Phillips, founder of Unbounded Thinking, told us: “When a scientist approaches a problem, they get excited about it. In business, we look at problems as a risk to our survival…Falling in love with a problem is the first step to having fresh eyes." Albertans are bracing for a tough budget today. Official Opposition finance critic Shannon Phillips lays out what she's expecting to see from the UCP, and what the NDP would do differently. Tens of thousands of seniors (and their families) were unable to successfully schedule vaccinations online yesterday, as Alberta Health Services' website couldn't keep up to demand. Enter the brilliant Dr. Kory Mathewson. The DeepMind research scientist took it upon himself to fix the problem ("in six minutes"), and share his solution with the world via Twitter. He explains how and why he did it, and responds to an outpouring of gratitude from complete strangers. We've been talking about sustainable farming and ranching in past weeks, as well as food waste. What about when those world collide? Ranchers Ryan Kasko and Jill Burkhardt tell us how their beef operations benefit from thinking "outside the farm". Speaking of cows, what's up with butter lately? Why is the entire world talking about it, including Jimmy Fallon, the BBC, and the New York Times? Julie Van Rosendaal, the food columnist driving this international story, joins to tell us how it all came about (and sort out what it means for consumers). 12:13 - MLA Shannon Phillips 42:11 - Dr. Kory Mathewson 1:09:06 - Ryan Kasko & Jill Burkhardt 1:37:04 - Julie Van Rosendaal

We are extremely pleased for just our second episode of The Forgotten Corner to welcome Lethbridge West MLA Shannon Phillips to the show. Phillips joins us for a great discussion that takes listeners through her early life growing up in a conservative Albertan home to her eventual election as part of an NDP majority government in 2015.She talks about her time as the province's minister of environment, and what it was like to face a specific, often vitriolic, opposition. We dive into the Alberta NDP's record on the environment, and Phillips talks extensively about the myriad issues a government faces from all sides when trying to diversify an economy that has long relied on its energy industry. The Alberta NDP has faced questions for years about its stance on oil and gas, but those inquiries have mostly come from a staunch conservative point of view. The Forgotten Corner takes a different approach, and Phillips is kind enough to enter into a healthy debate about when and how fast we should be shifting away from oil sands development. You can follow Phillips on Twitter @SPhillipsAB and on Instagram under the same handle.Read more about Castle parks:In 2018, the NDP signs a deal to protect Indigenous rights:https://www.google.ca/amp/s/globalnews.ca/news/4625600/indigenous-rights-castle-parks/amp/In 2019, the UCP quietly pauses that plan:https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5234811 ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In May 2015 the people of Alberta were faced with a choice at the ballot box and they surprised the pundits by choosing an NDP government, despite all the predictions that the Progressive Conservatives would add to their 44 year term in office. Now, almost four years later, the Premier has indicated that she will hold the election in the Spring of 2019 and again ask the people of Alberta for their vote. A little about our guests. Karl and Shannon are all about kids. Karl is one of eight children. The family was very athletic and Karl played college football and earned his degree in Exercise Science. Shannon is a wife, mother, business owner, and a passionate fan of My Gym. She comes from Kentucky and started working for My Gym right out of college. Both Karl and Shannon worked for my gym before moving to Texas and opening their own My Gym Children’s Fitness Center. Their 2 year old daughter is the ambassador, greeter, and all around face of My Gym at the Woodlands. A little about their business. After college both Shannon and Karl went to work for My Gym Children’s Fitness Center. With their background and passion for health and fitness for the whole family, a children’s fitness center was perfect. They worked for My Gym Children’s Fitness Center for 6 years before deciding to go out on their own. They moved to Texas and opened their first gym in The Woodlands. After four successful years, they opened their second gym in Houston. One piece of advice (the nutshell version) Really do your research on a business before you start any business. Know what you need to put into the business and be realistic about the return on your investment. Truly know your spouse. Have respect and understanding. Learn how to communicate.
