Usually, I feature drummers on this podcast, and we've had some incredible ones—plus music directors like Nate Patten and music coordinators like Michael Aarons and Michael Keller. But this time, I wanted to bring on someone I've known and played with for the past ten years, a true “Piano Man” and multi-instrumentalist who has made his mark on Broadway and beyond: Matthew Friedman.Matthew isn't just a pianist—he's a singer, a bandleader, a composer, and yes, even a drummer. He was “The Piano Man” in the national touring company of Movin' Out and has performed with the legendary Lords of 52nd Street, Billy Joel's original band. He's also been part of Broadway productions like Jersey Boys and Smokey Joe's Café, while leading his own group, Matthew Friedman & Stiletto. In this episode, we talk about:* His early start in music and the influences that shaped him.* How he made the leap from being an attorney to a full-time musician.* The highs and lows of touring life—from first-class gigs to rough bus-and-truck runs.* Stories from his time on Broadway, including connections to past podcast guest Jon Berger and future guest Joe Bergamini.* What it means to be more than just a player in the pit—how to lead, adapt, and thrive as a versatile instrumentalist.Matthew has great stories, big insights, and a unique perspective on what it takes to succeed in this business—not just as a drummer, but as a full-fledged musician and bandleader. Some clips of me playing a fun gig with him several years ago:Clayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and Off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical, and The Gospel at Colonus (featuring Kim Burrell). As a skilled sub, he has contributed his talents to notable productions, including Motown, Evita, Cats, Avenue Q, The Color Purple, Rent, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, and the national tour of Hadestown, among many others. He has also appeared on major shows including The View, Good Morning America, Jimmy Fallon, The Today Show, and the TONY Awards. He has performed with legends like The Stylistics, The Delfonics, Mario Cantone, Laura Benanti, Kristin Chenoweth, Kerry Butler, Christian Borle, Norm Lewis, Deniece Williams, Chuck Berry, and Ben E. Originally posted December 2021In this episode of Broadway Drumming 101, I sit down with Dena Tauriello, the drummer for Little Shop of Horrors at the Westside Theatre. From her first sparkle kit inspired by Karen Carpenter to a career that's taken her from rock arenas to Broadway pits, Dena shares a powerful story about perseverance, adaptability, and passion.Dena spent nearly two decades with the all-female rock band Antigone Rising, logging more than 260 shows a year, signing with Lava/Atlantic Records, and sharing bills with bands like Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, and The Bangles. Along the way, she learned the grind of life on the road, the frustration of being pigeonholed as “girl music,” and the discipline that comes from playing night after night. Those experiences became the foundation for her eventual move to Broadway. Her first Broadway chair came in Head Over Heels, the Go-Go's jukebox musical that featured an all-female band. From there, Dena's career expanded into multiple productions, including Kristin Chenoweth: For the Girls, The Cher Show (as a sub), Magic Mike the Musical (Broadway Lab), and her current run in Little Shop of Horrors. She also subs on Hamilton, Six, and at the origial run of Beetlejuice. In our conversation, Dena opens up about the realities of the pit:* Why no two shows are ever the same and why you can never “phone it in”* The discipline it takes to stay fully present eight times a week* How playing in Antigone Rising prepared her for the demands of Broadway* What she looks for when hiring subs and why paying it forward matters* The role of Ableton, click tracks, and sound cues in modern Broadway drumming* Her full gear setup: Pearl drums, Zildjian cymbals, Evans heads, Promark sticks, and custom in-ears* Why she always keeps charts in front of her—even after memorizing the showDena also talks about the surreal moment of playing on stage with the Go-Go's, interviewing Gina Schock for Modern Drummer, and what it feels like to see the Head Over Heels Playbill now preserved in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is a conversation filled with honesty, humor, and hard-won lessons for any drummer dreaming of breaking into Broadway—or simply learning how to thrive in the unpredictable world of live performance. For more about Dena: https://www.denatauriello.comClayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, and The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical. Shakira BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Shakira has been rewriting the pop superstar playbook these past weeks. Just days ago, her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour set new historic records in Latin America and the United States, with ticket sales now surpassing 2.5 million according to LOS40 Spain. At 48, she's become the first Latin female artist to headline a sold-out show at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium, while in Mexico City, her run of stadium shows shattered Taylor Swift's old record with eleven at Estadio GNP Seguros, and ticket sales so far have surpassed one million nationwide as reported by Ocesa. Mexican press estimate her Mexican shows have already delivered upwards of $30 million and with the Americas' leg alone, the tour has grossed close to $250 million stateside and another $100 million throughout Latin America, with industry sources projecting she'll ultimately top $300 million by the time she continues through Europe and Asia next year, a feat Billboard Boxscore calls one of the most profitable tours of the decade. This steep commercial success is matched by a wave of continuous press and digital chatter. On August 20, she took a meditative beach break in Cabo, and her pink metallic bikini photos triggered a full-scale social media frenzy. Outlets from AmoMama to PageSix flooded timelines with those images that—depending on your perspective—either wowed fans with her ageless physique or fueled criticism of her swimsuit choices, but there's no doubt the world was watching as the images went viral. Some praised her discipline and natural beauty, while her critics speculated about her mood, generating hundreds of thousands of interactions on Instagram alone.Meanwhile, Shakira's been highly visible off the stage as well. Her May appearance at the Met Gala and her chat with Jimmy Fallon caused a second round of headlines, as she discussed balancing motherhood, tour exhaustion, and the relentless pressure of living at center stage. Music outlets highlighted her collaborations with Cardi B, Karol G, and Rauw Alejandro from her twelfth studio album, and video clips of backstage moments with her sons Milán and Sasha fanned out across fan accounts.Upcoming, she's gearing up for major stadiums like Allegiant in Las Vegas and shows in Guadalajara, with Mexican media dubbing Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran “one of the most successful tours in the history of live entertainment.” As for speculation and rumor, while fans and pundits buzz about new music and a return to Europe and Asia, the only confirmed business moves center around her ongoing tour and forthcoming wardrobe surprises—no new ventures or relationships have been substantiated. In short, Shakira's living proof that after decades at the top, she can still surprise the world, profit mightily, and stay the subject of perpetual fascination.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

Dopeycon 2025 Tickets: https://buytickets.at/thedopeyfoundation/1765668This week on Dopey we celebrate Dopes Heather and Jen! Both with ONE YEAR! We read some emails and I got to sit down with the legend! IDGAF Foods (aka the guy behind eating hot dogs off the floor on Instagram) for a brutally honest trip through his addiction, art, and recovery. From smoking crack at 15 in Manchester, CT, to guzzling buckets of Molly and shards of ketamine out of Kahlua bottles, to swallowing and later digging through his own shit for balloons of drugs, his story is a nonstop circus of chaos. He dodged arrests, hustled Oxy 80s and Hartford heroin, spent $500 a day chasing tar and Roxies in Utah, and somehow never got caught.Out of the madness came art: digital psychedelia, album covers for major bands, and eventually his IDGAF Foods account—where eating sketchy food became exposure therapy and a way to help addicts. Along the way: scam hustles, OCD hand-washing, sitting in trees at parties to dodge cops, exposure therapy with oat milk, Jimmy Fallon holding up his artwork, and a grandmother calling him an idiot. Now clean since 2012, he's turned the insanity into purpose, with IDGAF Foods helping people avoid relapse by saying “Don't Be a Fucking Pussy.”All that and more on this brand new episode of that good old Dopey Show!
This week Jeremy welcomes Peter Berkman of Anamanaguchi. “Would you trust a drink that just arrived… or a mysterious dollop of mayonnaise?”In this wildly entertaining segment of The Ben and Skin Show, hosts Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray dive into the strange, hilarious, and slightly unsettling world of celebrity encounters, TV shakeups, and dry comedic genius. The episode kicks off with a deep dive into the NBA's rumored new broadcast strategy—“NBA Coast to Coast”—which could push West Coast games to a 10 PM Central start time on NBC, bumping local news and late-night staples like Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers. The crew debates the ripple effects on media, viewer habits, and whether NBC5 is quietly panicking. Then, things take a turn for the absurd as KT shares a story involving Joe Jonas, Amy Poehler, and the enigmatic comedian Nathan Fielder. When Jonas tries to send Fielder a drink as a fan gesture, Fielder responds with… a single dollop of mayonnaise. Delivered by a waiter. With a silent nod. It's the kind of prank only Nathan could pull off—and the kind of story that leaves the whole crew in stitches.
