Hosted by Fiona Scott, today's podcast welcomes Kevin Griffiths, co-director of The Care Show.Having met Kevin 7 to 8 years ago, Fiona found he was enthusiastic about business, networking and food. Fiona then introduced him to her VA, Hannah and now, together, Kevin and Hannah run The Care Show. The event is Swindon's Health & Social Care Expo where care industry professionals, suppliers, and service providers gather to share their insights and expertise bringing information and knowledge to businesses and members of the public.“The Care Show is about helping people who provide care, need care, want care and are interested in it, no matter what part of the business world you hold,” Kevin said.Kevin dives into the journey of stepping into this new role of co-director of The Care Show with Hannah, and what this new business venture means for himself and the local community. He shares the past success and future hopes for The Care Show and how they're stepping into networking and charity events. Kevin shares their ethos of giving back and how the focus is accessibility.“Care is a very loose term and it covers a plethora of things,” he says. “It's not just dumping an old person in a care home because that's the first thing that comes to people's minds.”Kevin discusses the need for a collation of information around care and it not being on the internet and how having one place that a person can come to and ask about care options is essential. The Care Show's expo attracts businesses which specialise in a variety of care aspects for example: care homes, mental health, fostering, adoption, self-care, wills and probate, financial services, nutrition, and youth support.Fiona shares how she underestimated the wide range of businesses which could attend The Care Show. Kevin and Hannah are both systematically underestimated and in January 2026 they successfully pull their first show together and did it extremely well.Kevin reflects on his personal relationship with care provision both for himself and family members, sharing how different care is now than it was decades ago. He reflects on how people need to take responsibility to protect themselves and plan their future.“If you haven't got the plans in place you will have, what they used to call in the old days, ‘a pauper's funeral', because you aren't going to get anything from the state,” he said. “We need to make a difference now.”He speaks about people's reluctance to ask for advice around care and how if he can bring one person who is worried or embarrassed of coming to the expo, and they get to ask questions, they have done what they set out to do.The pair talk about the future of social care in this current political climate and how care isn't discussed and undervalued in society. Kevin discusses how The Care Show aims to change that narrative and takes care and those who provide care more seriously and sets to bring care into people's lives and makes it more successful and cohesive to support them as early as possible.“Sometimes you have to stop and say, ‘hang on, why is this happening?'… and step outside of the bubble and see things with a new pair of eyes. That's when you can come to the care show and ask people for advice,” he said.Kevin concludes by chatting about how the conversations at The Care Show bring peace of mind to many and businesses are not there to gain clients but ease their worries. The Care Show's next event is on Saturday 10th October 2026, 9:30am to 2pm at DoubleTree by Hilton in Swindon. To contact The Care Show, visit www.thecareshow.co.ukTo get in touch with Fiona visit www.scottmedia.ukJoin our free Facebook group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/prtribe

Brain Talk | Being Patient for Alzheimer's & dementia patients & caregivers
When a loved one is diagnosed with dementia, caregivers are often thrust into a world of difficult decisions — from whether it's time to consider a care home to how to respond when a spouse becomes unrecognizable in temperament. Dementia care expert Teepa Snow, an occupational therapist with more than 40 years of clinical and academic experience, emphasizes that successful caregiving often depends less on arguing facts than on adjusting the environment, preserving purpose and social connection where possible, and recognizing that clinical labels or test results do not always capture what daily life with dementia actually looks like.Teepa developed the GEMS States of Brain Change and Positive Approach training strategies. Her company, Positive Approach to Care (PAC), provides online and in-person education and products to support those living with brain change. She also founded the Snow Approach Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Hillsborough, North Carolina. In this conversation with Being Patient's founder, Deborah Kan, Snow discusses how dementia care rarely follows a straight line: families often must keep reevaluating what is working, balancing safety, dignity, routine, and quality of life. Snow urged caregivers not to wait too long before considering a care home, noting that adjusting to a new environment becomes harder as dementia progresses. ----If you loved listening to this Live Talk, visit our website to find more of our Alzheimer's coverage and subscribe to our newsletter: https://www.beingpatient.com/Follow Being Patient: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Being_Patient_Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beingpatientvoices/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/beingpatientalzheimersLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/being-patientBeing Patient is an editorially independent journalism outlet for news and reporting about brain health, cognitive science, and neurodegenerative diseases. Send us a textThis week on The Book Fix podcast, hosts Yajaira and Cheli lean into spooky season with a cozy-yet-creepy episode full of Reddit-paranormal reads and personal eerie moments. They open with light, relatable banter about being the “paranoid” vs. the “stoic” friend, then dive into listener posts and neighborhood hauntings — from a lamp that turns on by itself in a church to unexplained doors, printers, and footsteps at an old workplace. The conversation moves from amused skepticism to genuine chills as the hosts read an account of a haunted elder-care home (Victorian “woman in white,” shadow figures, and unexplained presences around deaths) and a terrifying Reddit post about waking up with the sensation of someone sitting on your back. The quality of food in care homes for the elderly can be underwhelming. Ruth Alexander talks to the people highlighting the issue and finding ways to bring nutrition and comfort back on the menu. Dr Lisa Portner, a medical doctor and researcher at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charite, outlines the inadequate diet offered by three nursing homes she studied in Germany. Australian restaurateur and food writer Maggie Beer tells how she came to set up the Maggie Beer Foundation, which aims to research the issues, raise awareness and offer culinary training. Ronald Marshall explains the simple ways he found to help carers understand the food preferences of his mum, who was diagnosed with dementia in 2020. And Navgot Gill Chawla recounts the conversations she had as a PhD student at the University of Waterloo in Ontario with South-Asian Canadians living with dementia and their families and care partners. When the subject of care homes came up, she says food was uppermost in their minds. If you would like to get in touch with the show, please email: thefoodchain@bbc.co.uk Producer: Beatrice Pickup. The nursing home industry is booming—and Badri Hebsur is leading the way
There are more than sixteen thousand care homes across the UK, housing around half a million people. Staggering numbers. They are meant to be places of safety, support, and quiet, relaxed companionship for the people who live and work in them. But when COVID-19 arrived, they became one of the pandemic's deadliest frontlines. In a bid to see what might be possible, the Vivaldi Study - a nationwide effort to gather data from inside care homes - was launched. Can better data improve the lives of people in care homes? After growing up with glowing beings at his window, misty figures rushing from the basement, and pets staring at something unseen, one man thought he'd left the strange behind—until he began working night shifts at a care home. Two residents on different floors described the same dark figure standing silently in their rooms. Hidden beneath a photo, an upside-down crucifix was found etched into the wall. Was this just delusion, or a decades-long haunting tied to forgotten land, old souls, and a house that never wanted to let go? This is his lifetime of unexplained encounters. Fed up with their own inadequate and expensive care systems, many elderly Westerners are choosing to retire to Thailand, where care is cheaper and often better. Many say Thailand's Buddhist culture and respect for the elderly means Thais are naturally caring. It's a booming sector, and is only likely to grow as we all live longer. But the decision to move can be complex, particularly when it involves retirees with dementia. People have been accused of dumping their sick relatives in Thai care homes, far from family. Is this exploitation – rich Westerners taking advantage of Thailand's low wages? And what does it mean for local health systems, as care workers are lured away to look after foreign residents? If you would like to get in touch with the show, please email: businessdaily@bbc.co.ukPresented and produced by Gideon Long(Picture: British retiree Liz Jackson, now living in Chiang Mai.)

As KQED's Cecilia Lei reports, the closures highlight how the Japanese American community is at a crossroads.
