Weak oil prices have meant a dip in resource royalties in Alberta. And Premier Danielle Smith pointed out that higher immigration is another reason. So, the province will hold a number of referendums this October. Albertans will weigh in on nine questions about immigration policy and constitutional issues. And if separatists are successful with their petitioning efforts, a question about whether Alberta should leave the country will be on the ballot as well. To help us unpack these developments, we talk to Kathleen Petty, host of the CBC podcast West of Centre, and Alex Boyd, who reports on Alberta for the Toronto Star.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has some questions she wants Albertans to answer. Nine of them, to be exact.That's how many referendum questions Smith announced in a televised speech that she's going to put to Albertans on Oct. 19.They range from constitutional reform to abolish the Senate and change who picks judges, to several that would directly affect some immigrants and the services they receive.To unpack the proposed immigration changes, host Jason Markusoff is first joined by Raj Sharma, an immigration lawyer based in Calgary. He argues many of the questions appear outside Alberta's jurisdiction.Then, the panel breaks down the rest of the premier's address. Journalist Rob Breakenridge says the referendum could serve as a distraction in advance of a bad-news budget. Evan Menzies, a vice-president at Crestview Strategy and former head of communications for the United Conservative Party, says there are reasonable questions to be debated amongst the proposals. Canvassers are currently collecting signatures for a petition in Alberta that could trigger a referendum on whether Albertans want to remain a part of Canada. The volunteers are with a group called Stay Free Alberta, whose leaders are Mitch Sylvestre and Jeffrey Rath.Matthew Scace is a staff reporter for The Globe and Mail based in Calgary. Animal cruelty is equal parts disturbing, gross, and downright maddening — and tonight's story is a bizarre saga in Ontario's horse world. Stephanie Redlick is a North York/Toronto-area resident who is reportedly connected to Above the Stars Equine Rescue, and a figure many in the equine community have been warning about for months. Redlick has been charged with 13 offences under Ontario's Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act, and police have also laid criminal charges alleging fraud and theft connected to a livestock matter. There are serious claims being made by critics and horse advocates — allegations that horses under Redlick's stewardship have been kept in appalling conditions, with suffering and death as the outcome. So, how can someone facing such serious allegations still be in a position to acquire more animals? In this scenario, Rebel News journalists often reach out to a party to get their side of the story.
