Had an awesome conversation to start my day off in a wonderful direction with the one and only, Travis Joseph. Travis is a graduate from Lake Shore High School - class of 2012 who now lives down in Florida and is in the finance area of high-end boats and air craft. He takes us through a leadership journey in our talk, especially leaning towards servant leadership. I love how he brought up some key elements of being patient, not rushing, listening more, asking questions, and so many wonderful & true statements that we all can learn from. He's had his share of rough lessons in his life that he has been open to learning those important lessons to make him better. Such a great teacher to me with these lessons. Our conversation could have gone on for hours. He was sure to mention plenty of people too that he has had great connections with and who helped him in his journey so far. WOW - what a great time spent with St. Clair Shores native, Shawn Szydlowski - a graduate of Lake Shore High School. Shawn shares some great stories, insights and lessons about chasing after his goals and dreams of playing professional hockey. I really appreciated Shawn taking some time out of his day to sit down with me for this interview. So many valuable lessons that he brings out in our visit today. We had some great conversations - both off and on the show - and I am pulling for this "kid" to reach every goal and dream that he has for himself. He carries himself so well and is so caring for others - especially kids. People who make an impact on others - a positive one at that. We all have had people in our lives that have done that & hopefully we can be that same difference-making person for others too. Don Munn was one of those people for me and countless others. Don was a student of mine that graduated high school in 2000. He joined the US Army and was killed in action in 2007. Today a group of his friends and family have carried on the tradition of service, difference maker for others, getting along with everyone, etc. - traits that Don had - they are carrying on with having a scholarship in Don's name. They had the 4th annual Munn Fun Run.... a 5K race starting at Lake Shore High School's football stadium & track - running around the surrounding neighborhood - in and around Memorial Park in St. Claire Shores, MI - then finishing back at the high school. So many great people helping out in Don's memory. Namely, another former student of mine and classmate of Don's - Anna VanderMarliere Kuehnlein - she's the driving force behind putting this 5K race on. She's a living example of what Don was all about - and an example for me and all the other people that she knows. Who can you be that person for? Look for them... they are out there and you have it in you to be that difference maker - just like Don Munn was for us. In my first show of trying to get things sounding better... a little different on this show at the start and at the end. :-) I wanted to tie in a little bit more of my introduction as to how I got started in teaching at Lake Shore High School. I had to get out of my comfort zone BIG TIME when the chance came for me to get an interview at a different school. That opportunity opened up the door to where I am now. I'm sure glad I got out of my comfort zone then... far too many years recently of me staying in my comfort zone, until now that is. :-) Also - I wanted to introduce to you how importance having an attitude of gratitude is. I think it's something we all need to look at having more in our lives... I know I need that for sure. Hope you enjoy show #6!
