“Send Coach John a message”I have found another legend - Nancy Lieberman (@NancyLieberman) shared this simple (and short) message - “Do the work even when nobody claps.”  Remember this is coming from a Hall of Famer and someone (once again) is out there helping, encouraging, lifting others up from the journey she has been on.  How awesome would it be if more people looked to do this to help others. Keep working towards great things, being our best along with making a difference with others along the way. Instead of tearing down others with actions and words (as there are way too many examples in today's world) all of us can do better. Part of that is doing things the right way - even if we don't get noticed. The applause shouldn't be the reason we are doing good things in the first place.  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.  ** I would appreciate anyone to try clicking on the top of the show notes where it says "Send us a text" to leave a few thoughts / comments / questions.  It's a new feature that I'd like to see how it works. **

“Send Coach John a message”I found something that I needed - it comes from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) and it's from James Clear on the antidote to anxiety:  “Working on a problem reduces fear of it.  It's hard to fear a problem when you are making progress on it - even if the progress is imperfect and slow.  Action relieves anxiety.”  This directly ties into something that I learned a long time ago from the awesome book “The Magic of Thinking Big” (but I still am trying to improve on), that Action Cures Fear!  Imperfect action towards accomplishing something is still WAY BETTER than no action at all. Even if we are taking steps backwards, we are still learning.  I'm finding a ton of “advice” lately that I certainly need to pay attention to.  It's amazing the number of clues that are out there for all of us. When I think about it, there is no possible way that we will ever run out of these clues. **

“Send Coach John a message”Another legend comes to the front of the class to share some invaluable lessons about life. You know what?? These are simple lessons too, but I'm just talking about me here - they are not easy to keep remembering.  I've always had trouble paying attention. It's one of many things that Jim Rohn helps me and all of us remember to work through.  The clip comes from Jim Rohn Official (@OfficialJimRohn) - “Growth isn't always about grinding harder. Sometimes, it's just about watching more closely. Jim Rohn believed that success leaves clues, and the people who progress fastest are the ones learning from the wins of others. Look at what's working around you. Ask questions. Study outcomes. The better you observe, the more you learn what to repeat and what to release.”  He's one that helps leave clues for all of us as we all navigate this journey of life. **

“Send Coach John a message”I came across a short clip from a legend that has always been a difference-maker for others. He's done it through the great game of basketball, but his lessons are all about success in life.  The lessons from Coach K are shared by Coach AJ / Mental Fitness (@coachajkings).  “Coach K shares what it actually takes to get better. "In order to get better, you change limits." "When you change limits, you're going to look bad and you're going to fail." Growth requires pushing past what's comfortable. And that means you're going to stumble. You're going to look like you don't know what you're doing. That's not a sign you're on the wrong path - it's proof you're on the right one. Coach K would always emphasize: Failure isn't a destination. It's a checkpoint. It takes grit to keep going. Courage to try again. And the willingness to endure when it would be easier to quit. The only way to expand your limits is to test them.” (The audio clip comes from Bloomberg)  What an amazing reminder and any time we can pick up lessons from successful people, we need to pay attention.  My next podcast episode will have some more information on the importance of paying attention. **

“Send Coach John a message”I saw a gentle and small reminder that I think we all take for granted a lot during life. It comes from Alan Stein, Jr. (@AlanSteinJr) who is the author of a couple of great books that I read and I think it would be great if you connected with both of them at some point - “Raise Your Game” and “Sustain Your Game”.  His quote is this:  “One decision can change the course of your entire life. The power to choose is our greatest gift.”  I've heard that a few times that our greatest gift we have (and it could be one of a few), is that of choice.  I think it's worth it for us to keep working on our choices in life. It's our thinking. Our actions. Our habits. Our words. There's many things that we get to choose throughout life. One thing for sure I know I can keep getting better with the choices I make AND I know I need to do that for sure. **

“Send Coach John a message”I found this from Kylie Riordan (@mindfulheal) because it made total sense to me as I have been thinking about this a lot more lately.  What she shared was this:  “I hope you have a random moment today where you look around and think “Oh.  This is my life.”  And instead of spiraling, you smile.  Because maybe it's not perfect.  But it's yours.”  As I prepped for this podcast along with the errands and other things I had to do this morning, I got a message from one of my good friends Jodie.  This topic has come up for both of us in recent weeks. She shared how she felt a bit “giddy” with one aspect of what she's been going through. I was reminded that we also need to do things / recognize things that make us feel that way a bit more often.  I know I need to take more intentful moments to remind myself how proud and “giddy” I am about “Oh, this is my life.”  Maybe you can find those moments too. **

“Send Coach John a message”It's always awesome finding so many things that speak directly to my heart. It's like Clint Hurdle (@ClintHurdle13) knew this advice he was sharing, was something that I needed to connect with.  He shares this thought from his book:  “Hurdle-isms for having a high standard.  #17) “Lower the bar and you lose the winners; raise the bar and you lose the losers.”  Now I know I need to raise the bar simply to tell (and show) myself that I can (and need to) get rid of the “loser” versions of my previous selves along with their excuses, habits, self-talk, etc.  The other one was #18) “We don't have time to have “just another day.”  I am seeing this more and more as I get older. I knew about this truth when I was younger, but I for sure didn't think about it too often and it did not really add any reasons for me to do things that I knew I needed to do. I need to do things. Now! How about you?  Any thoughts for the person staring back at you in the mirror about these two “hurdle-sims”? **

“Send Coach John a message”I found a couple of gems this morning, both coming from Gary Vaynerchuk  (@garyvee).  The first is a short video clip where he is having a conversation with a young kid and her mom, reminding the kid that she is capable of learning to do things to help herself out with her Youtube channel editing.  The simplicity of reminding her (and us) that we learned how to do things as a young child and that we are capable to keep learning new things, no matter how old we are.  That leads into the second post I saw from Gary - “Seriously, so many of you in your 40's, 50's, and 60's have hunger to go for more but think you have to “wrap it up” because of your age - that's just not true.”  Amazing reminders from a guy that just keeps putting kindness, compassion, authenticity, passion and tons of other life examples out there for us to connect with and learn from. The ideas and lessons are out there my friends - it's up to each of us to decide where and how we implement them into our lives! **

“Send Coach John a message”I'm not sure why lessons from rivers have been a thing lately, but Bob Starkey (@CoachBobStarkey) had a post that deals with both persistence and resilience thoughts all from what a river does all the time.  “A river only breaks through rock because it shows up everyday.”  Just keep showing up like a river and go around, over, through, under, etc., the “rocks” that we face every day. Just don't quit. Sounds easy, but we know it's not.  Amazing lessons to pick up from nature once again that we can use for sure.  Many things that we have to get through are not even as tough as a rock is. Remember, over time that river will wear down the rock, even break the rock into pieces. What we have to face may seem impossible, but we need to also remember we don't have thousands of years either. **

“Send Coach John a message”I came across my buddy John O'Leary's post on Facebook and it really made a strong connection with me. I think it's something that all of us need to be reminded about. This passage from what I shared with you says it all:  “So today, if someone in your life is hurting, don't worry about finding the perfect words. Just be there for them with a phone call, a handwritten note, your presence or a simple hug. Because sometimes the greatest gift we can offer someone who is struggling isn't an answer, but the reminder they do not have to suffer alone.”  We all have someone we can reach out to. In fact, I am doing that now to a couple of people even before I finish putting this podcast out there.  Also, don't forget to reach out to someone to let them know that maybe you could use a few minutes of their time to talk if you need some help too. Actually my health issues (not often enough), help me to realize that I have a great life - IN SPITE of my challenges. I also realize that nobody, not one single human being has zero problems.  There are many different types of problems that all humans have to deal with in life, but I would say that (and I've heard it said before), our health is the most valuable thing to have in life. Bennett (@InspiringThinkn) where he shared this perspective:   “Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create.”  To me this takes it a step further than “... focus on what you can control.”  I like this as, of course, I needed this message right at this moment.  Lot's of things are going on and I'm feeling a bit out of control and down too.  Seeing this helps me to put my focus and energy on not only what I can focus on, but also putting some action behind things too - in order to feel better about all of the things going on.  Hope this helps you too. **

“Send Coach John a message”Wonderful lessons from the past for me and it comes from a bigtime difference maker, Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) where he shared this quote:  “We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.” — Randy Pausch.  Mark then shared his thoughts on this - “Absolutely right! I humbly admit that I am not in charge of everything but I am in charge of how I respond to life's setbacks, challenges & curveballs.”  Not only did this connect with me right now (because I needed this reminder), but it also connected to me deeply from the fact that I used this to share with my students too. Here was my response to Mark's post - Coach John Daly (@coachtosuccess) “Powerful reminder @MPHickie - I shared Dr. Randy Pausch's story and his life-enhancing lessons with my classes (especially in my Principles of Leadership classes). My students would always share with me what a difference-maker he was for them.”  Awesome memories with incredibly powerful lessons for this teacher, who always knows I need to be more like a student and keep applying lessons learned. As it's been said - Lesson repeated until lesson learned.  Keep learning my friends. **

“Send Coach John a message”Powerful and simple reminder for today, again one that I needed to take to heart as I see the total truth in it.  It comes from Chris Foster (@CoachC_Foster) and the message is this:  “Instead of being ashamed of what you've been through, be proud of what you have overcome.”  Wow!!  Yep… when I sit back and look at viewing my life from the point of view of what I've overcome and NOT being ashamed of the “self-shameful” moments, I start seeing a whole new (and true) view of myself.  I have a smile on my face. I sit up a bit taller with my shoulders back a bit more. “Send Coach John a message”I found a great post from Coach AJ  / Mental Fitness (@coachajkings) “The real fear shouldn't be action - it should be inaction.” There is a very deep post here that I will post on my social media channels for you to take a longer look at these thoughts on this very important life topic.  It ties into Friday's show dealing with regret and discipline.  The intro quote from Coach John Wooden is a key part of this. “You're going to fail on occasions. But the greatest failure of all is failure to act when action is needed… You have to act knowing that at times you will fail… that's the greatest - absolutely the greatest - fault of all is failure to act when action is needed.”  Powerful thoughts that go with this from Coach AJ. Again, for me this is a huge reminder as I stated when I reposted this:  “One of the biggest (and truest) reminders that I know I needed to re-connect with!  The “key” for me is to have this truth be a part of my everyday life. I have plenty of examples from my past where I didn't try & plenty where I did. Always learning & growing! Thanks Coach AJ!”  I hope you can make a big connection with this episode as well. **

It comes from Jim Rohn Official (@OfficialJimRohn) “For those who loved Jim Rohn, few lines hit harder than this: “Discipline weighs ounces, regret weighs tons.” It's a timeless reminder that the small weight of daily effort is nothing compared to the crushing burden of missed chances. Which one are you choosing to carry?”  I liked playing the recording for you so that you could actually hear Jim's voice.  Do yourself a favor and search for and listen to content from Jim Rohn. Pure Gold!   I got a powerful thought of how fast time has gone by - listening to the 70's & 80's Music station on TV…. and WOW.. seeing some of the years connected to some of my favorite songs growing up…. “Send Coach John a message”I shared a very emotional story in today's episode from our weekend trip to Northern Michigan. We saw a dog tied up on the side of a major expressway. Someone abandoned the poor thing. I got on my phone right away and called 911 to report this and they said they would send someone out right away to help the dog. I sure hope the dog is ok. I was in tears and I still have not shaken the memory from my mind and heart. It got me thinking about how much we need to treat animals / ourselves / others, so much better than we really do.  Humans have shown throughout history that we don't do this very well. This incident reminded me personally that I need to keep striving to get better and be better.  Better for myself, my wife, family, friends, others, and this includes our dog and other pets.  Someone's heartless, gutless and inhuman choice to leave their dog out there like that, has made a BIG impact on me to keep striving to be better.  I hope this helps you do the same. **

It came from liminal (@Liminal1988) where they shared this post:  “A happy life doesn't consist of just happy moments, it is a mixture of both the happy and the sad.  There will be good times - when you laugh with your friends until your cheeks are read and your stomach hurts, trips to the park and the zoo, shopping and late-night ice-cream runs, and private jokes and notes passed in class, and every little prank that you play. There will be long lazy days spent at the beach as you dip into the ocean just as the sun sets, and holidays to countries with tender sand and warmth in the air, and nights you spend indoors with your family wrapped around you and the comforting days that you spend alone. ~ Ruby Dhal, (author of The Path to Self-love.)  Each item in this post got me thinking about many things throughout my life. In fact when I typed this out, I got to thinking about other things too.  So many things reminded me that I have had a happy life so far AND I plan to choose to continue to have more of a happy life too as I get older.  I sincerely hope this helps you to connect with having a happy life too. **

It comes from The Motivational Quotes (@MQUOTESLIFE) and the to-do item is this:  “Sometimes rest is the most productive thing you can do.”  One reason I see this as a good thing is that I'm getting older and so I can justify it a bit more.  But I'm also seeing the truth and importance of this truth too. To get through the tough moments that life can throw at us nowadays, really finding the time to rest and recharge is becoming more of a necessity instead of something to say “oh I wish I could rest and recharge”.  By resting, recharging, clearing our head, feeling better, recovering, etc., is that we can be better to go back and deal with things a bit later. That is me you see standing up holding my hand up… guilty for sure on this one), instead of putting more action out there into the world. Social media is dominated I think with so many “keyboard warriors” who spew thoughts and opinions and then they are actually “walking a totally different walk.”  The hidden agenda by so many people is for so many other reasons than simply to try and live a good life and help others.   I know for one I need to keep walking my correct walk a bit more. “Send Coach John a message”I found a gem from a hall of famer, Nancy Lieberman (@NancyLieberman) who shared this truth:  “Life is so ironic, it takes sadness to know what happiness is, noise to appreciate silence and absence to value presence.”  These are simple truths that I usually don't think about too much. Now that I was reminded about it - these sure do make sense. I also need to seek them out more… more happiness, a bit more silence and I'm for sure valuing the presence of people that I love a lot more now. “Send Coach John a message”I found a powerful and simple statement from Kylie Riordan (@mindfulheal) that I connected with in yesterday's podcast.  “When we understand that each day isn't one more day, but one less, we start giving more value to what truly matters.”  I guess it's easier to see the truth in this statement as we get older. The key is to not wait too long to connect with it and allow it to have an impact on how you live your days.  Know that today is the youngest we will ever be and that tomorrow we will be older and closer to our last day. This gets me thinking about not wasting little moments throughout my day - right now.  Look around and see what really matters in your life and start connecting with that more and more… today! **

“Send Coach John a message”I really enjoy days where I can find a simple reminder that has a lot of power behind it.  Today's reminder comes from Roy T. Bennett (@InspiringThinkn) where he reminds us about this:  “Faith, hope, love, and truth form the pillars of life; without them, nothing truly stands.” (Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart)  I am reminded about these pillars of life that I need to keep not only investing in improving in these areas for myself, but also that when I keep improving - everyone around me gets better too! This is about how powerful this is if we all keep looking to improve and help each other get better!   These parts of life are very “attractive” to have.  We connect with people when we have good things going on around ourselves. Since life is all about relationships, the more we can improve on those relationships, the better things will be.  One thing for sure, I need to keep working on many different things to keep getting better. **

Often detours are what help us discover who we truly are. Every mistake carries a lesson, every setback has meaning. The goal isn't to dwell on the past-it's to understand what it's here to teach us.”  This quote really does make sense, especially in today's techy world. “I'm a big fan of the ‘GPS Theory':  when you miss a turn, your GPS doesn't judge you, it recalculates.  No matter how many detours you take, it finds another way forward.  Life works like that too.  You'll make mistakes, but your destination doesn't vanish. The route just changes.”  I needed this easy to connect with thought. I've made mistakes for sure, but I do just need to keep finding another way forward.  Too bad I don't move as fast as my GPS does in calculating a new way. How's your GPS system doing? Appreciate the people who cross your path, cherish the lessons they leave behind & move forward with gratitude and purpose. Walk your path with kindness, integrity & purpose and embrace the journey ahead.”  These are powerful reminders for all of us and reminding ourselves of these, during the moments we are in them throughout life …. That is a key element to having an amazing life. The post said this:  “Everyone is on their own unique journey.  Walk your path with purpose, kindness, and integrity, while wishing others well on theirs.  When your paths meet, appreciate the moments you share together.  When they part, continue forward with strength and gratitude.  Cherish the lessons, memories, and footprints they leave on your heart, then embrace the opportunity to keep growing and discovering who you are along the way.”  As I read this and retyped it out here, I sure did think of so many people that have shared our journeys together.  Getting a little misty eyed about it too. It comes from Gary Hensel (@gary_hensel) and it is this:  “Blowing out someone else's candle doesn't make yours shine any brighter.” We have way too much of people blowing out others' candles thinking that it's ok, and also that it means they are successful. Many that keep doing it also think it means they are a good person for others to follow - in business, religion, etc. It's total nonsense my friends. The thing is - I need to make sure that I'm not blowing out anyone's candles - I want to be the one to help them light them. “Send Coach John a message”I always love seeing some of the same strong people, who continue to post things on a regular basis that help others.  A former student of mine who is now a fabulous teacher and coach, Coach Ray Ostrowski (@CoachRayO3313) is definitely one of those people that are a quality difference maker for others.  Here is his intro for the post I saw today: “Your % matters. You can't be a part-timer & expected to receive full-time benefits & rewards. Break ‘what you do' up into a % based on your number of opportunities & see how you stack up. Are your outcomes in line with your expectations? Does your % help or hurt your effort?”  Now remember, he writes these quotes out every day on a big white board in marker, for his students / players to see!  He's sharing these gems for anyone that wants to keep getting better - even if we are not in high school any more or that we don't play football either.  That's the beauty of being a lifetime learner… it happens every day if you go looking for it.  The quote that he wrote out is this:  “% Matters!  You can't be a part-timer & expect full time benefits & rewards.  In sports, percentages matter - 75% from the line is solid, while .350 from the plate is elite.  But in life, what % of the work are you actually doing?  If you're only showing up for half the reps, half the prep & half the effort - don't expect the whole result.  There isn't much middle ground for commitment & excuse.  The scoreboard will reflect  your investment.”  WOW!! Take that to heart my friends.  This got me thinking about my % as connected to my everyday life. What's my “batting average” for each day?  Am I even getting to the plate to take an at bat or am I content sitting in the bleachers and “resting” because it's more comfortable and I “get to” or “I've earned it” since I'm retired.  Dang Coach Ray…. you got this guy doing some deep thinking with this one my friend. “Send Coach John a message” I stumbled across a post from Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_) today that got me thinking about a few things. This was the quote that caught my eye today:  “Positions are temporary. Titles are limited. But how you treat people is always remembered.”  Once again, the world needs more of this. I know I keep mentioning this in my podcasts, but it's true. We can all do a better job of sharing and acting on things that help bring about better ways of living our lives. A big part of this also connects with others too. When we live our best lives, remember, we are changing “the world” by improving “our world” around us. All the titles, fancy positions and possessions, along with all the money in the world; none of it will win out over how we make others feel. Between remembering my uncle and the two young fellas I had some great conversations with yesterday - wow… there are tons of awesome examples out there for us to connect with and learn from. “Send Coach John a message”The Mindfulness Meditation Institute (@TrainingMindful) shared a very powerful and short reminder for all of us.  “Be an encourager. The world has plenty of critics already.” - Dave Willis.  I may have shared something close to this quote in the past, but I know I needed to share it today for sure. All of us need to look to encourage others AND ourselves. There are so many critics out there, but their feedback to others doesn't even come close to what the world needs. Short and sweet my friends. **

Bad attitude vs. Great attitude - Motivation Monday Game Plan - #1885

“Send Coach John a message”I connected with this guy again, as it's been awhile since I've shared something from Coach AJ  / Mental Fitness (@coachajkings). This one is a reminder of some pure gold basics in life. It comes from football coach, Dabo Swinney who said, "It's the optimists who change the world." Success starts with your mindset and what you do every single day. A bad attitude holds you back. A great attitude takes you forward. "The only disability in life is a bad attitude." We all have this disability at times throughout our lives, along with others. Keep trying to be your best as I am doing the same. I'm reminding myself that my effort and attitude are the only things that I can really control - I need to keep working on these for sure. **

Real Education - Daily Thought With Coach Daly - Fri. 5-22-26 #1884

“Send Coach John a message”I found one simple sentence that to me was a very powerful post. It comes from Overmind (@overmind01) and here is the sentence: “Real education starts after you leave school.”  Yes sir, 100% right on target for sure. Think of what you are “learning” every day!! “Education” itself simply does not mean in a formal school setting. That's where it starts of course, but real education is something that we are privileged to seek and go after, every single day of our lives! What are your “lesson plans” for today? For your life? Keep striving to get better. To be better. To be a difference maker for others. To be humble and hungry. To understand that nobody gets through this life alone or untouched by challenges, difficulties, setbacks, road blocks, failures, and ultimately, death!  “School” is open every day, 24 / 7 / 365.  We just have to pay attention to this and to keep learning. The right things are out there for us to pick up and make a part of our “educational” resume. Keep at it!! **

Are you afraid? - Daily Thought With Coach Daly - Thurs. 5-21-26 #1883

“Send Coach John a message”There has been a young lady who is in the battle of her life with ALS, that I've been following for a few years. A recent post I saw was her taking questions that she is answering about her journey. Her name is Sarah Nauser (@SarahNauser) and her bio on her Twitter / X account says this: “Dominating ALS one day at a time since 2018. Retired Police Officer. “Love the life you live and live the life you love” Go Royals! #FightLikeAGirl“  She answered a question “are you afraid?” and her answer sure does get me thinking about things in my life and offering me a different perspective as to how I need to change things as far as I handle my troubles.  She reminds me in her post about the importance of having “faith over fear”. The lessons she offers from what she's going through, I sure can use them for what I'm going through - simply because my battles are nothing on the scale of seriousness & life altering as she has. She is battling every single day. If she can do that, I know I can do the same. Life is full of inspirational stories and lessons for all of us. Keep seeking them and also don't forget your story, actions, your life - all can help others too. As usual, the world needs these lessons more now than ever!! **

Life's Highest Calling - Daily Thought With Coach Daly - Wed. 5-20-26 #1882

“Send Coach John a message”Love this post that came across my “wires” today. It comes from Drew Maddux (@DrewMaddux) and he shares this thought about the quote I will share with you as “Life's highest calling... Pick up the Trash...leave people, places, and things better than you found them! Every conversation matters. Every interaction matters. Every encounter is an opportunity to bring life, hope, and encouragement to someone else. You never know what someone is carrying, and you never know how one word, one smile, or one moment of genuine care might change their direction. Life is not only built in the big moments…it's built in the ordinary ones. So, treat every day like it matters, because somebody else's life might depend on it.”  The quote that he shared with his comments goes like this: “I'm very optimistic that every conversation, interaction, or encounter you have every day can change somebody else's life.” Just imagine for a moment, if more people took this to heart and set out throughout their day to consciously live this out.  Even in small ways, this can be a HUGE deal for others and their world. This is an awesome & powerful mindset to have throughout life. I dare you to try it. **
