While at the gym yesterday, lifting “little weights”, I found myself listening to Ben Newman's podcast, listen to it HERE. I found myself having to record this thought in my notes to share on a podcast. Simply stated: “Be the best you can be, one day at a time!” In the little moments we have every day, we can look to win them a bit more than normal. Following through on a promise we make to ourselves or someone else. Replace a bad habit with a good one. Pile up little victories, small wins… nobody else has to know about them. That way, we can accumulate more wins each and every day at being our best!! This is a formula that I need to follow a bit more!!  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.

Found an awesome & funny thought here that is right on target in our lives today. It came from The Mindfulness Meditation Institute (@TrainingMindful) and they reminded us that: “Life has no remote. Get up and change it yourself.” - Sushant Singh.  What a true statement for each and everyone of us. If we don't like “our channel”, change it. If we don't like the “input”, change it. There are times to change our “volume” in life. If you're close to my age.. You will remember something like this (what I posted with this):  “Great thought here…. Plus, I had to laugh since I remember as a kid, “being the remote” for my parents when they wanted to change the channel and not having to get up to do it themselves.”  Be active in taking care of being your own “remote” for your life!!

Saw this powerful post directed mainly at teachers, but it is total truth for everyone!!  From Chris Quinn (@ChrisQuinn64) - “Great leaders never forget what it's like to be a teacher or a student.” This is one thing that I tried to get my students to understand every year I was a teacher. Life is all about always being a student, no matter if you are in school, working in a school or not.  People that realize that life is a teacher along with other people, we have things we can learn and get better at, every single day of our lives. It's amazing how many people don't get this.  Don't miss out on bringing this mindset into your life.

The only thing from those times are lessons that I still need to learn I guess.  I'm learning a bit better about this, and I simply need to catch myself more when I'm not being a good stewart about my time. This got me to post this about what he shared:  Coach John Daly (@coachtosuccess) “Life always presents moments of learning…” I'm trying to remind myself lately and quite frankly, I need to do this every single day, what are the lessons in those moments where I feel down, negative on myself, etc.  I'm working very hard to continue to not stay in those “down” moments - which can be many in today's world, and I want to pull myself out of those moments sooner in order to get better and keep learning.  This is a powerful mindset to have in our tool belt each and every day!!

Here they are:  “The key in life: Show up.  Show up when it's hard. Show up when it's messy.  Show up when no-one's watching. Show up when you don't feel like it. Show up when the rewards are uncertain. Just show up.  You can never bet against the person who just keeps showing up.”  Here were my thoughts on the post that I put with it when I shared it:  Love this!!  This is 100% on target, speaking right to my soul.... Once again, lessons pop up when I need them and it's also connected to the fact that I still need to learn (or relearn) these important lessons again. Remember - Lesson repeated, until lesson learned. This teachable moment comes from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) “Bigger dreams call for healthier habits and healthier habits require more self discipline.” The reason this spoke right to me was that I was just thinking about this last night. Telling myself (instead of listening to myself), that I needed to get back on track with my habits and that I know I need to tighten up the “self discipline belt” a little bit. The gratitude was flowing and I hope this gets you thinking about it too.  This post was shared by Gordana Biernat (@MyPowertalk) and I love this intro to the post that she shared: “Gratitude is a miracle frequency.”  Her quote that was shared was: “Don't wait until you lose something before you appreciate it.”  I need to make this a part of my everyday activities or habits. I came across this connection from my book that I'm reading (and it's been a long, ongoing reading of it), “Arete - Activate Your Heroic Potential” by Brain Johnson. He brings up this idea about us looking to be “antifragile” and it's connected to not being fragile - breaking or giving up, the moment life gets challenging. Life does indeed get challenging for ALL OF US… every day… many times a day for sure. Love this part - "Nor are we just resilient - more skillfully dealing with life's challenges and bouncing back a little faster when we get knocked around. When we're ANTIFRAGILE, we use all those challenges as FUEL for our never-ending growth.”  How about that!!  Since we all have challenges, turning them into fuel for us to keep getting better, to keep learning, to keep overcoming, etc!!

I found a post that really got me thinking about things and there are some thoughts of mine that come with it too. (of course there is, that's what my show is all about)  This one came from Motivational Quotes (@motivational) where this reminder was posted for all of us, and I can see that it covers all humans, just about every day!  “You're being tested because you're evolving. This is your turning point. Don't let it break you.” Since we are changing all the time as we get older and time goes marching by, we have multiple opportunities to keep getting better and not to give up and quit. It makes sense to not only have awesome people around us that inspire us, but also that we spend our time going after or creating things that “fire us up”! Again, amazing like always I see a post of something when I need it the most. Late yesterday I found out a former student of mine passed away. I know his family well as I also taught his two siblings. His two parents are a big part of the school community where I taught for 30 years. The post came from POSITIVITY (@PositivitySaid) where it was an image of 3 framed pictures on the wall over a couch. The three pictures each had a part of a quote that went together. There were three main words and smaller ones underneath. It went like this: “GRATEFUL for the small things, FOR the big things & EVERYTHING in between.”  In my tearful reflections over this happening, I thought of the conversations I had with this student and members of his family over the years. Lots of laughter and love along with a few tears here and there too. It also reminded me how blessed I have been to have ALL my former coworkers, students, that community, etc., that poured into me in so many ways, that my life became better from all of it.  Please - continue to think about ways where you (we) can simply just keep focused on getting better along with treating each other with more love, kindness, empathy, compassion, etc. We need each other to look out for each other and help each other to be our best. When we keep working to be our best, we all benefit in so many ways.  Sending lots of love, prayers, positive thoughts along with a little action behind things to keep getting better - all to his family, his many friends and our school community.

I found a post that fit exactly with what I did yesterday with one of my best friends. From Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_), “Proof the best things in life are free: Sunrises, Sunsets, Hugs, Conversations, Love, Waking Up, Nature, Laughter.” The breakfast that I had with one of my best friends, Scott, got me thinking about the fact that I've been through all the items on this list (and more) with him throughout our lives. I've also been blessed to have others be a part of this list too. There are so many other things that are free in life - recognizing them along with being lucky enough to share them with others, is a key to what I think is a very happy & fulfilled life. Going through this list on this episode, really got my emotions going as I'm seeing (again), how blessed I really am. When I connect things like this list to special people in my life, I get inspired & feel a tremendous amount of encouragement.  Scott helped to remind me of both again as I shared some breakfast time with him.  Find those things that are “free” in life & not only connect with them for yourself, but also look to connect them to others in your life too.

Saw a post that got me thinking about what some people call other people crazy, when they look to help others win.  This came from Power of Positivity (@LIVEpositivity) “Call me crazy but I love to see people happy and succeeding. Life is a journey, not a competition.” Just imagine - like my good buddy Coach Rich Bowers told me and my leadership students so many years ago, life is all about creating “win - win” types of relationships - and if we had more people looking to create those!! So many people LOVE to criticize, complain, blame, put others down, etc. The world needs less of that for sure. I just came across one of the simplest, yet strongest reminders for life and it came from Mind Essentials (@Mind_Essentials). This simple thought for all of us is: “When you get tired, learn to rest - not quit!” - Banksy. In today's busy world with so many things going on, it is really easy to keep pushing ourselves. There are moments for sure where we need to pause, take a deep breath, rest and then keep going. In order to be our best, so we can be our best for others and chasing after our dreams and goals; we do need to take moments of recharging so we can feel like we can keep going. I found this message to be really comforting. Right off the bat when I saw this, I mistook it for someone else and after I recorded this episode, I realized this was not the sports broadcaster that I thought it was.  My apologies for mixing this up.  Steve Keating (@LeadToday) put this out there:   “If you're not making progress then you're probably not making anything else either.”   This post got me thinking and connected this to another item I just ran across and that is the podcast from John O'Leary where he interviewed his guest, Kyle Scheele. It's a powerful episode - liste to it HERE.  The main post from Steve was that it was connected to a quote from Benjamin Franklin, which said:  “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.”  The reason this popped up on my radar was that both connections reminded me how important it is to keep going in life. To keep learning new things along with to keep putting in effort in life because of the new things.  I really advise you to listen to that podcast from John O'Leary as there were so many things in there that inspired this podcast & inspired me too!!

Found a great connection to today's message, and it simply came from me going to a doctor's appointment along with running an errand. I saw the post from Inspiration & More (@LifeWithJohn) where this thought about happiness was shared:  “Happiness is not about longing for things that you don't have; true happiness comes from inner peace. It also comes from inner peace. It also comes from appreciating your life and people around you. Happiness is something that you cultivate from within.” -Sangeeta Rana.  This really hit home with me and reminded me of the simple fact that happiness is indeed a choice.  Too many people going around complaining (I am one of those people plenty of times - trying to get better though) so I know how easy it is to do it.  But, I've been working on not letting others cause me to do it.  I know I have to work at not complaining, so for me it's an everyday battle.  I do know it's worth it for sure. Where focus goes, energy flows.” These things on this list screamed at me to keep working on them - for my sake and the sake of everyone that needs me to be my best.  I think if you look at each of these statements for yourself, like me, you will find plenty to keep working on yourself, in order to be your best. The rotten fruits will fall by themselves.”  Those people who are out there causing you problems - just remember, they are causing troubles for others and mainly themselves!! Don't waste your time trying to get back at them as we all have to remember, they live with themselves!!  All the “crap” they are putting out in the world, all comes back to them. Wow.. what a fun one this one was to put together. I tried a video recording along with recording the audio on my phone. The video will be on my Youtube channel so I can put it out there and start to do some different things. Not sure what all of those are, but I'm trying them for sure.  The idea from this episode mainly came from a former student of mine, Rynn Foster who posted this awesome picture of a sunrise with the thought: “One day we'll all be a sunrise in someone's life, a beautiful sunrise” That got me thinking about the fact how special that will be having someone remember me when they look at a beautiful sunrise (or sunset too), along with the fact that it got me thinking about family and loved ones that are no longer here or those that I have not seen in a long time.  There were a lot of emotions with this post when I saw it as my day got started out thinking about things in a more positive way, wanting to get better for myself and for others - especially in today's negative, angry and hateful world. Rynn helped to remind me of what I want to focus more on - I reached out to her and thanked her for this and it reminds me of one of many things that I love about being a life-long educator.  My students / players / coworkers have always been difference makers for me and for many of them, it's been happening throughout my whole life!! This reminded us that: “Inner Peace begins the moment you choose not to allow another person or event to control your emotions.”  The first thing that came to my mind was the fact that I need to work on this a lot more and that every day brings us many times where we have to deal with other people and events that make it tough.  But then as I was recording, I thought about that and I took the view that I'm getting plenty of opportunities to strengthen this “muscle” of choice - and that's how I'm going to get better! I can't complain about these people and events - they are going to be there no matter what! I can focus on using them as moments / lessons, where I can get better! This book is one that I know I will be recommending to many people. As I  continue to read Jon Gordon's latest book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, the lessons that are available for all of us remind me that I need to simply just work on getting better every single day. I hope, since you are listening to this podcast and probably others, that you want to keep improving too.  In this final part 5 of 5 Ways to Stay Positive, this one is titled “Talk to yourself. Don't listen to yourself.” Remember there is the acronym of LIGHT for these 5 steps and this is the final one, the “T”.  This is one of my favorites because I need this reminder every single day!  Instead of letting my own negative & self-defeating voice direct my day, I need to talk to myself and be my own biggest encourager & cheerleader!!  Since we are the thoughts that we think & believe, we might as well be thinking and believing our best!!  I can't believe the negative ones, I need to connect with & live out the positive ones. Nobody is going to do this for me, I need to speak these into existence into my own life.  Love these reminders of these 5 lessons.

This book is a good one. As I  continue to read Jon Gordon's latest book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, the lessons that are available for all of us are powerful and life-changing.  In part 4 of 5 Ways to Stay Positive, this one is titled “Have Faith.” Remember there is the acronym of LIGHT for these 5 steps and this one is the “H”.  When it comes down to it, Faith helps us to connect with the idea that things are going to get better. Of course we need to understand that challenges will come along in life.. Many of them of course… but we also need to understand (and believe) that we will overcome them.  Love this line from the book - “Trust that struggle leads to strength and setbacks lead to comebacks.” This is something that I need to work on for sure. John O'Leary (https://johnolearyinspires.com/) says it all the time, that we should believe that “the best is yet to come.”   Thanks for listening.

As I gladly continue to read Jon Gordon's latest book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, I am fired up about continuing to gather so many life lessons. In part 3 of 5 Ways to Stay Positive, this one is titled “Get To.” Remember there is the acronym of LIGHT for these 5 steps and this one is the “G”.  This one is right to my heart as Jon reminds us about when we find ourselves complaining - which I still need to work on - we need to remind ourselves that we “get to” do things in our miracle of life, instead of “having to do” them.  When we are able to focus on Gratitude, we can move from being selfish, frustrated, and stressed to more of an attitude of gratitude, appreciation and abundance.  I love this reminder: “Research shows that you can't be stressed and thankful at the same time. If you are feeling grateful, you won't feel stressed.”  He is 100% on target. I just need to do it a bit more often, every day!! I am working on it so it becomes more of a habit.

As I continue to read Jon Gordon's new book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, I continue to pick up so many life lessons. In part 2 of 5 Ways to Stay Positive, this one is titled “Inside Out.” Remember there is the acronym of LIGHT for these 5 steps and this one is the “I”.  Jon reminds us that the real truth and power of our lives comes from inside us, not from the outside world. I love this point that he brings up that as we create our life from the inside out, it's all about our spirit, our soul, our passion, and our power from within us. This is why it's always so important to keep working on ourselves, all throughout life! I just got started reading Jon Gordon's new book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, and it's got some powerful lessons in it. Since teams are always a part of life, and it's not just sports, I wanted to share these 5 parts of Staying Positive. Over the next five days I'll be sharing some of my thoughts from his book.  He's all talking about “living LIGHT.” I'll explain what that means throughout this coming week. To start us off,  part 1 is all about “Love instead of Fear”. He brings up a couple of great points. Jon reminds us that Love puts a shadow on fear and helps to get rid of it.  Fears are out to weaken us, put limits on us and strikes doubt all around us. Remember, Love is a choice! Contrary to what some people think - love is a big-time strength, not a weakness like some people think. I feel bad for those people that think it's a weakness.

From a classic difference maker that has helped millions of people, this longtime golden advice comes from the great Jim Rohn and it's shared by Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) where Jim reminds us to “Go for the pain of discipline, it weighs ounces. The pain of regret weighs tons.”  Every time I hear or read this quote, it hurts. I have let things go for a long time where regrets are starting to get bigger. I've known it for 25 years or so on things that I wanted to create, go after, build, try, etc. All I can do - all any of us can do, is to use today to do something about those things. The discipline to do something today will be for sure easier than to try it later as we get older. Lot's of personal reflections for me here in this one. Hope it helps you too.

I came across a great post that had an interesting connection of things that people connect to gratitude. From Roseann | Keep On Going Motivations (@Motivateme247) shared this thought: “If you can't find joy in a cup of coffee, you won't find it in a yacht. Gratitude treats all things the same.” I love my coffee and I have always found joy, solitude, peace, etc., with my coffee. For sure, I don't want a yacht or anything that can be labeled as fancy. No problem if that gives you incentive for life, but that's not for me at all.  A few good thoughts (I thought) in this episode.

I found a couple of posts that really focused on some points that I think we need to have more examples of in our world.  The first one was from Motivational Quotes (@motivational) where we are reminded about some things that really “Speaks loudest” when it comes to helping to make a difference with others.  This post goes on to share these things that do have a “loud voice”: “It's not your wallet, your title or your status. It's how you treat others that speak the loudest.” The second connection came from Coach AJ  Mental Fitness (@coachajkings) where he shares this classic reminder from one of the greats of any sport and all of history -   “John Wooden said, “Helping others is perhaps the greatest joy! You cannot have a perfect day without helping others with no thought of getting something in return.” Acts of service enrich our lives. It means selflessness, kindness, and serving. Serving is a reward by itself.” Awesome thoughts for all of us to be better for ourselves and for others too!

This one stood out to me because I know I have fears and I know they are getting in the way of me living my life to the fullest.  It comes from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) and it's a short but powerful reminder: “The fears we don't face become our limits.” - Robin Sharma.  I have had things getting in my way for 20 + years and to top that off, not only do I know about them - a few of my best friends know it too. You see, they have been around me that long, always encouraging me that I can do these things, but the final decision needs to come from me. Another key element. Since it's been 20 or so years, I look ahead to another 20 years.  Yikes!!  I'll be just around the corner (if I'm blessed enough to see this corner) from turning 80 years old!!!! Time waits for nobody!!  I don't have all the time in the world where we think we do sometimes.  I will continue to try and “talk to myself, rather than listen to myself” in going after whatever I have to do to get through these fears. When I step back a bit, they really are not that big of a deal for sure.

Again, it happened again. A message that not only I needed to see, but that I have been reminded about it from different places. This time it came from Power of Positivity (@LIVEpositivity) where this message was shared: “You will never hear another person's voice more than you hear your own. Be intentional about the way that you talk to yourself.”  It's an old saying that I have heard for a long time, but since I needed it as recently as this morning, I needed to share it with you. It's connected with - “talk to yourself rather than listen to yourself.”  Most of the time when I'm feeling down about things in life, I start listening to the critic inside of me, instead of the coach and cheerleader!  I know I need to continue to tap into that coach & cheerleader, without me having to wait for this quote coming back into my life.  It's something I know I need to do, want to do, and will do!!  How about you?

Found a post about some really good advice that I have heard shared from others too. This one came from The Mindfulness Meditation Institute (@TrainingMindful) where they shared: “The best weight you will ever lose is the weight of other people's opinions of you.”  I have always remembered the line that reminds us that opinions are like people's backsides, everyone has one. The world seems to be never short of others' opinions and it can be tough to not only filter through them, but to also not let them get to us. Having confidence in ourselves in things we want to do helps to focus on what we can control and not worry so much about the opinion of others. Our lives and our troubles can lighten up a bit when we get rid of those opinions from others.
