“Send Coach John a message” I stumbled across a post from Seek Wiser (@SeekWiser_) today that got me thinking about a few things. This was the quote that caught my eye today: “Positions are temporary. Titles are limited. But how you treat people is always remembered.” Once again, the world needs more of this. I know I keep mentioning this in my podcasts, but it's true. We can all do a better job of sharing and acting on things that help bring about better ways of living our lives. A big part of this also connects with others too. When we live our best lives, remember, we are changing “the world” by improving “our world” around us. All the titles, fancy positions and possessions, along with all the money in the world; none of it will win out over how we make others feel. Between remembering my uncle and the two young fellas I had some great conversations with yesterday - wow… there are tons of awesome examples out there for us to connect with and learn from. Remember, you are one of those examples that others can connect with and learn from too. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”The Mindfulness Meditation Institute (@TrainingMindful) shared a very powerful and short reminder for all of us. “Be an encourager. The world has plenty of critics already.” - Dave Willis. I may have shared something close to this quote in the past, but I know I needed to share it today for sure. All of us need to look to encourage others AND ourselves. There are so many critics out there, but their feedback to others doesn't even come close to what the world needs. Short and sweet my friends. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I connected with this guy again, as it's been awhile since I've shared something from Coach AJ / Mental Fitness (@coachajkings). This one is a reminder of some pure gold basics in life. It comes from football coach, Dabo Swinney who said, "It's the optimists who change the world." Success starts with your mindset and what you do every single day. A bad attitude holds you back. A great attitude takes you forward. "The only disability in life is a bad attitude." We all have this disability at times throughout our lives, along with others. Keep trying to be your best as I am doing the same. I'm reminding myself that my effort and attitude are the only things that I can really control - I need to keep working on these for sure. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found one simple sentence that to me was a very powerful post. It comes from Overmind (@overmind01) and here is the sentence: “Real education starts after you leave school.” Yes sir, 100% right on target for sure. Think of what you are “learning” every day!! “Education” itself simply does not mean in a formal school setting. That's where it starts of course, but real education is something that we are privileged to seek and go after, every single day of our lives! What are your “lesson plans” for today? For your life? Keep striving to get better. To be better. To be a difference maker for others. To be humble and hungry. To understand that nobody gets through this life alone or untouched by challenges, difficulties, setbacks, road blocks, failures, and ultimately, death! “School” is open every day, 24 / 7 / 365. We just have to pay attention to this and to keep learning. The right things are out there for us to pick up and make a part of our “educational” resume. Keep at it!! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”There has been a young lady who is in the battle of her life with ALS, that I've been following for a few years. A recent post I saw was her taking questions that she is answering about her journey. Her name is Sarah Nauser (@SarahNauser) and her bio on her Twitter / X account says this: “Dominating ALS one day at a time since 2018. Retired Police Officer. “Love the life you live and live the life you love” Go Royals! #FightLikeAGirl“ She answered a question “are you afraid?” and her answer sure does get me thinking about things in my life and offering me a different perspective as to how I need to change things as far as I handle my troubles. She reminds me in her post about the importance of having “faith over fear”. The lessons she offers from what she's going through, I sure can use them for what I'm going through - simply because my battles are nothing on the scale of seriousness & life altering as she has. She is battling every single day. If she can do that, I know I can do the same. Life is full of inspirational stories and lessons for all of us. Keep seeking them and also don't forget your story, actions, your life - all can help others too. As usual, the world needs these lessons more now than ever!! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Love this post that came across my “wires” today. It comes from Drew Maddux (@DrewMaddux) and he shares this thought about the quote I will share with you as “Life's highest calling... Pick up the Trash...leave people, places, and things better than you found them! Every conversation matters. Every interaction matters. Every encounter is an opportunity to bring life, hope, and encouragement to someone else. You never know what someone is carrying, and you never know how one word, one smile, or one moment of genuine care might change their direction. Life is not only built in the big moments…it's built in the ordinary ones. So, treat every day like it matters, because somebody else's life might depend on it.” The quote that he shared with his comments goes like this: “I'm very optimistic that every conversation, interaction, or encounter you have every day can change somebody else's life.” Just imagine for a moment, if more people took this to heart and set out throughout their day to consciously live this out. Even in small ways, this can be a HUGE deal for others and their world. This is an awesome & powerful mindset to have throughout life. I dare you to try it. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found an amazing post with unbelievable timing. This really hit home as we just lost my uncle earlier this morning. He had a long, long life as he was in his early 90's. He fought with many different battles over the last few years - cancer and Alzheimer's to name just two of his battles. This quote hit home for me: “The people we love and have lost don't just shape our past; they show up in how we live every day.” George Couros is the one who said this and shared it too. George Couros (@gcouros) who had this thought about the quote: "You don't feel sad all the time, but for the rest of your life, you are different. I can't explain it any better than that." I love this other thought he threw out there about grief: “You Don't Get Over Grief, You Become Someone New Around It.” These thoughts here have been circling around my brain since I saw them. My aunt and my two cousins have been at my uncle's side for a few days now as the end was drawing near. This family has had their share of tragedy in their lives - but… they have always been there for each other throughout their entire lives. What a powerful lesson for all of us to learn from. I'd like to keep on my journey of looking to get better, every single day - because of and for, the people that shaped me and came before me. That's the best way to keep connected to others that make an impact on us. For me - it's one more balcony person not only cheering me on, but also gives me another big reason to keep working hard and doing my best in life. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”From Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) came this gem on what he calls a “MindsetMonday”. “Don't let old battles keep you from new victories.” I've done this plenty of times. Keep re-hashing something in my head from my past that is holding me back from my current day / in the moment things I should be doing. This became clear again not because I saw this post, but actually going through it because of my recent surgery. So much stuff we tend to carry around and if you are like me, sometimes that old stuff gets in the way of doing new & great things. Something good for me to work on while I have a bit more time on my hands as I heal up. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I saw this post that connected directly to one of my favorite all-time shoes, Ted Lasso. This post was from one of the characters on the show, Higgins and it was one of so many life lessons shared on the show. In a conversation with another character, Roy - Higgins mentioned this to him: “Human beings are never going to be perfect, Roy. The best we can do is keep asking for help and accepting it when you can. And if you keep on doing that, you'll always be moving towards better.” Asking for help is something that many have trouble with doing and some even have trouble giving help too. Recently going through another operation, I've been put in the position of needing a lot of help. My wife has gone beyond “stepping up”, as she is doing everything. Today, I'm getting around better and doing a bit more for myself. This point from the show really got me thinking about not only my life right now - but also the way it should be more often. If we are looking for help (and we should be open to that), we need to be more helpful towards others. Do yourself a favor - check out the Ted Lasso show and see the awesome character development and the many life lessons that all of us can use more of. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”What an amazing, emotional and inspiring conversation I had with another former student of mine, Eli'Ana Klemm. This was a powerful conversation all connected to her recent book, "Resilient" (click the title for the link) and the lessons she learned from extreme loss and injury when she was young. Eli'Ana shares so many lessons of life in this conversation that I know this will make a positive difference with so many people. You can connect with her on Instagram (@Beyondherblues) and there you will find other ways she shares her insights, encouragement and life enhancing ideas. She is again, another student that I've had the pleasure to work with that really makes a difference with others. She's also one that I'm very proud of and thankful for all the lessons she continues to teach me. This is one to share with others for sure, both here and on my Youtube channel as well. “Send Coach John a message”For my last pre-recorded, post surgery episode (hopefully), I'm leaning on a legend. John C. Maxwell (@TheJohnCMaxwell) is someone that has been around for a very long time. I remember for most of my life knowing who this guy is and finding my way to being connected to his teachings. This one is a gem that he shares with us today. “The only guarantee that tomorrow is going to be better than today is that you're growing right now.” Let this clip sink in a bit. Listen to it a couple of times. In our growth during tough times, we have the choice of learning from those moments, in order for us to have a better tomorrow. This is something that I know I need to do more of - especially during my recovery from my surgery. Not easy times right now. Painful times right now. But I know I'm getting better from what I had to go through. This lesson I need to keep leaning on, stay connected to, because I know there will be other tough times to get through and to learn from as I'm going through them. You know what?? The same goes for you. The same goes for everyone. We just need to remember this for our moments of tough times so that we can grow from what we learn about going through them. Here's to better tomorrows. Everyone around us gets better when we grow! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”He scores again… Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) shared another gem that caught my heart and my ear. I've heard this before, actually many times, but I needed to hear it explained this way: “Don't be a thermometer that reflects the room. Be a thermostat that changes it. Stay grounded, set the tone & bring the energy you want others to feel. Measure the atmosphere if you must — but don't stop there. Change it.” The clip he shared was from Devante Warner (@thedevantewarner). Love the strength and courage of being the person that brings peace into chaos. Brings faith into doubt. The more we can learn to be the thermostat in our lives, the more control we can have in situations where others are only the thermometer. Such an amazing and powerful mindset to have. “Send Coach John a message”I found this amazing reminder (seems more and more amazing reminders that I am finding - messages that we all need) from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) his message about the clip from Inky Johnson (@inkyjohnson) - “Achievement is what you attain or accomplish. Fulfillment is something you experience when your journey, growth & relationships align with purpose. Fulfillment comes from who you become during the journey, how you impact others & whether your life aligns with purpose & values.” Love the reminders about the importance of the journey that we are all going through in life. The people that are on the journey with us are so valuable. Achievement is what we acquire and fulfillment is what we become. The sooner we connect with this, I feel that our lives will become more valuable, more memorable - so much more meaningful. Our journey (people, things and events) all of it molds us into who we are. The thing is - we do the same for others as well. Great stuff! Deep stuff! Take it all in my friends. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found a gem from a “repeat difference-maker of doing good things” - Coach Ray Ostrowski (@CoachRayO3313) shared his thoughts on his Daily Quote - “You will never feel ready. But the moment changes when you decide to MOVE!” This reminder that action does indeed cure fear along with adding confidence. The quote is this: “Ready? - You will never ‘feel ready'. Ready is not a feeling - Ready is a decision. Confidence comes after the decision, not before it. You'll never feel fully prepared. The moment changes when you decide to move.” This hit head on for me in that at this moment, I hope my surger is tomorrow, but a few wrinkles have gotten in the way due to insurance company “issues”. There are many things that I'm battling and that inner voice is one of the biggest. That is something that is connected to how I get things done I need to do along with preparing and recovering from this surgical event. So, in the meantime… I'm not sitting back playing a victim and letting worry & anxiety take the steering wheel. I'm moving and doing. Whatever you got going on, I hope this helps you my friend. “Send Coach John a message”I came across this awesome idea, almost a frame of mind that I know I need to have more often. It comes from Steve Gutzler (@SteveGutzler) “I'm on a ONE DAY contract.” It's a reminder for me to be my best so that at the end of the day, when I look in the mirror, that guy looking back at me will say - you've earned another contract for tomorrow to work hard, do good and be your best. It reminds me to have more “be in the moment more” moments, each and every day. It reminds me to keep fighting for the things I know I need to do and want to do. It reminds me to keep up the mindset of “not to grow weary in doing good”! I want to fulfill to my wife, our two kids, my entire family, friends, etc., that they are glad that I'm here doing good things and serving others, encouraging others, helping others. “Send Coach John a message”I love finding things that help me the moment I see them. This one is an example of that for sure. From Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) there is this short but sweet & powerful nugget: “Your next move matters way more than your last mistake.” I need to focus in a bit more on the next move for myself and not keep getting hung up on the past. When I'm thinking about the things that I am facing or that have to get done, I can really get in my own way with this somewhat negative mindset. Then, the thing I need to face, get through, get done, etc., becomes more difficult than it really is. This is something I'm working on for sure. A very positive point about this - I don't have to wait to work on it as there are things going on right now to practice getting better. I think we all have that opportunity more than we think. “Send Coach John a message”I had the wonderful pleasure of sitting down (through Google Meet) with a former student - Abel Sanchez. Abel was on my podcast a few years ago and it's been a few years too long to finally have him on again. The wisdom that this young man shares is not only something else that I cherish and count myself blessed to be able to keep learning from him, but I hope you are able to take away a few lessons for your use in your life. So many great connections to lessons he learned in high school and with him sharing them with us in this episode, he's teaching me (again) the importance of always staying humble, looking to keep improving, and choosing kindness / love towards others and life in general. I was truly inspired and I hope you are too after listening / watching (see my Youtube channel). If you want to reach out to Abel, find him on Instagram: (@abelsancheziii) Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found an awesome post because the post had a picture of Jim Rohn on it with one of his many wonderful life lessons. This was shared by Mark C. Crowley (@MarkCCrowley) and his intro to the post was this: “It's a false dichotomy to think you can't care about your people and drive performance at the time. One doesn't come as a cost to the other.” He's right on target with this - caring about people helps out in so many ways in business and in life! We see way too many examples of what not caring is. Here are the thoughts from Jim Rohn: “Learn to be strong, but not rude; kind, but not weak; bold, but not a bully; thoughtful, but not lazy; humble, but not timid; proud, but not arrogant.” Wow! What a great formula for living our best life. Of course we can connect other things that lead to a great life - but these are wonderful pieces to add to our life's puzzle! Again, think of the many that are doing, saying, living, etc., the opposite of these gold nuggets. Keep getting better my friends. Keep striving to live your best life!! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I came across a wonderful post from Kylie Riordan (@mindfulheal) where she shared this thought: “Leave the earth a better place because you were here, because you were kind, because you loved.” This directly connected to recent conversations with two of my former students, Abel and Eli'Ana - in fact both conversations are coming out soon in my “Sunday Conversations” here on my audio podcast and will be out also on my Youtube Channel too. These two inspired me, in fact here was my thought when I reposted Kylie's post: Coach John Daly (@coachtosuccess) “I was just reminded about this from two former students… Abel & Eli'ana!! Those two “kids” are wise beyond their years!” We do matter my friends and what we put out into the world does matter and does add up, even if we don't see it. Look to be kind to yourself, others, to nature, etc., along with loving yourself, others, life, your calling, your favorite things to do, favorite things to eat, etc. Once again, I mention this a lot, the world needs us to be connected to this since there are so many that are not connected. In fact, they do things the exact opposite. Follow Kylie's advice here my friend and it's echoed by my two former students who continue to teach this teacher, important life lessons that the world needs too. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I truly enjoy seeking new ideas, new ways of inspiration, new lessons, new people, etc., all with the idea of self improvement & personal development. Each and every day I CHOOSE to seek things out and learn from them. I then try to share some of them with you, my awesome listeners - where we both get to find new ways to keep growing and being the best versions of ourselves. This one comes from Dear Self (@Dearme2_) and the message is to “Focus on the future. Today's reminder: Only put energy into things you have a future with.” There are so many things to put our energy into today, but it's not all good for us. I continue to learn that I don't have endless energy to waste on things and people, that don't help me grow into the person I want to be and have the life that is worth having. Distractions have always gotten me to waste time that I shouldn't throw away. I need to make time for the things that matter (like Abel Sanchez reminded me in our talk). Take this message to heart and see where you can focus your energy in the areas you want to. Our time can't be wasted and then we expect to be in a better place in life when we do choose to spend it that way. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I was listening to my friend John O'Leary's podcast today - his Monday Moments - and it was all about having new perspectives. I hope you want to check it out - find it HERE. The new perspectives come from lessons from the four astronauts that recently came back to earth from the Artemis II mission. John goes through some awesome and powerful lessons from this incredible trip to space. These lessons can encourage us in so many ways to remind us of how special being alive is really something to connect with. This ties into recent conversations with John O'Leary and guests from his monthly online zoom session that he had yesterday. Check out his entire website so you too can get connected to not only his great content, but also - Click HERE. Also there are connections to my chat I had with my former student Abel Sanchez - that chat will be coming out this coming Sunday. But our chat had a lot to do with how amazing life can be and things to connect with making it better. Great stuff all around us my friends. Just connect with it and pull what you need to make your life just a bit better. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Found an amazing reminder from Motivational Quotes (@motivational) and it's all about telling us again to have a calm mind. “Stress tricks you into thinking everything's urgent. “Send Coach John a message”I found this great post from Art of Thinking (@Art0fThinking) with the help of Snoopy (from the Peanuts cartoon). These 6 habits of happy people are things we should all strive for. They are: Don't Show Off, Talk Less, Learn Daily, Help Less Fortunate, Laugh More and Ignore Nonsense. Each and every one of these are things we can always strive to connect with more and more in our lives. There are many things that go with each of these as I share just a few of each. I hope to take these with me each and every day! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found something that got my attention right away. It's a post from Bob Starkey (@CoachBobStarkey) where he shares this gem from Maya Angelou: “If you're going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can't be erased.” The size or fame of your legacy I think, doesn't really matter. The fact that you choose to live a life where you are conscious of your actions, what you do in life towards others and what kind of life you let be the example for the world to see …. That's what matters. This is something that I have always had in the back of my mind of how my life will be remembered. Now… as I get older, it's something I know I need to keep doing and keep getting better too. I want to just keep getting better as a human being, a husband, dad, son, brother, friend, uncle, neighbor, etc. Living a life to be proud of - that's a great thing to go after. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Got back into my book that I'm trying to read every day… it's been a few days where I haven't kept that promise to myself, but yesterday's reading was BIG! The book is “Areté” by Brian Johnson and it's all about being our best. This particular lesson was about 3 Forms of Discipline. He gets this from a guy named Phil Stutz. There is “reactive discipline” where we are triggered by something happening and we choose our form of discipline at that moment. There is also “structural discipline” which is all about our every day habits that keep us going in our choices that we make. Finally, there is “expansive discipline” which is the most challenging of the three. This is the one that really ties into the fact that we have a choice in EVERY SINGLE MOMENT of our lives. If we are looking to become our best, we need to have more moments where we say to ourselves, “bring it on” to having challenging things to deal with and grow from. It comes down to choosing to keep learning and keep growing where we can keep getting better. All three of these help make us who we are along with who we are becoming and the direction to where we are going in our lives. Great stuff!! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Again… starting my day off doing things to connect with getting fired up over the things that are part of me. Of course I found a few. One was a clip from Merrill Hoge - former NFL player and T.V. Analyst - he was sharing a story when his doctor told him about having cancer. In the midst of going through treatment, when he told his daughters about what he was battling, his 7 year old daughter crawled into his lap and told him something along the lines of “daddy, you better find a way” to get through this and beat it. WOW! I was tearing up when I heard this and it got me thinking about how I need to continue to find a way to deal with the battles that I have. Perfect timing came in other posts that I saw today - as they do every day it seems. But it also comes in the form of friends reaching out, as my friend Denyse sent me a message of thanks & encouragement. My episode recently spoke of connecting with our emotions but not staying there. I needed the reminder of what I said, so I could apply it to myself. Awesome parts of life's journey come from sources when you are looking for it and when you have good people around you that take it upon themselves to reach out to you (and others) to encourage and lift others up! Wow.. we all need that more and more for sure. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found this powerful and perfect reminder in a post from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) where he gives a little introduction: “Anyone else feel this …. Life's been a little strange lately—a mix of blessings, lessons, and confusion. Some days I'm grateful, some days just tired… but I keep showing up and trusting it's all aligning.” The post that he shared with his thoughts was this: “Life's been a little strange lately …. A mix of blessings, lessons and moments that don't quite make sense yet. Some days I feel deeply grateful, other days I'm just tired, and sometimes I'm simply trying to understand it all. But even when it feels heavy, I keep showing up. I keep moving with trust. Deep down I know that things are aligning for me, even if I can't fully see it yet. I'm learning to stop questioning the timing, and instead grow through what I don't understand.” This was something that of course got my attention because I feel that parts of this is what I feel and see going on around me. Lot's of things going on in life and I'm trying to simplify them to fit what I want my life to be. Life does feel heavy at times and I'm reminding myself to just keep showing up, put in the work for the things I think are important and just keep believing in myself, my wife, my family & loved ones and keep being the best version of myself that I can be. So what about you?? You feeling this too? Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Out at the gym and listening to Jon Gordon's podcast and it was all about Worthy Wins. He had a great conversation with John Olinger, listen to it HERE. It really got me thinking about having “worthy wins” every day! They are things that really matter in life. The things that you really want to connect with every day of life. “Send Coach John a message”I found a simple yet one of the most powerful reminders I've had come across my radar and of course, I needed it. It comes from Science girl (@sciencegirl) and she titled her post - “Kindness”. It's a quote from Robin Williams and here it is: “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.” The world needs this reminder as much as I do looking at the guy in the mirror. I am always amazed and saddened that some people look at kindness towards others as a weakness or something negative. There are some of those people that tell others that they need to stay away from kindness as others will take advantage of them if they are kind. Well, I'm here to tell you that is not true at all. The people that I see as true leaders and difference makers, know that kindness is something that is important to have in your toolbelt of life! Take this thought from Robin with you and be a difference maker for others when you offer them more kindness. The world needs it for sure. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Found another one to share with you today. It comes from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) and it's titled: “Be your biggest fan…Consistency is harder when no one is clapping for you. You must clap for yourself during those times, you should always be your biggest fan.” This is one thing for sure that I need to keep working on for myself. There are so many times that I get down on myself and if I can create more of a habit of being more of a fan of myself, those down moments won't last too long. Time to work on my cheers for me. “Send Coach John a message”Stumbled across a fabulous song from Eddie Dalton Music (I suggest you look him up… really good stuff!!) This was shared from a good friend - Coach Bob Johnston called it “my new anthem”. It starts about not being able to move like I used to and that it really does take me a few more moments to get going and do things. Listen to the lyrics a few times through… so much good stuff! Just passing through time, like wind through the pines… wow!!!... that one hit me hard for some reason. I've listened to it six or seven times this morning.. Still tearing up about it. Music sure does make a difference in people's lives! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found this gem of a reminder for all of us to connect with. It comes from Tiny Buddha (@tinybuddha) and I think we needed this for sure: “We weren't meant to live this fast. That's why our bodies push back with anxiety, exhaustion, illness. We were made for slowness, connection, care, nature, laughter and deep presence. That's where we belong. That's where we can return.” ~Unknown In today's world, I know I have been one of many looking to find ways to slow down. The pace of the world - from technology's connection to everything, is I think, one of the main reasons that we are looking to find a bit more slowness. I don't know about you, but I'll be focusing on this a bit more every day. To tell you the truth - I wish I would have done it when I was younger too. I did at times, but not nearly enough. “Send Coach John a message”I found two things about Gratitude that got me thinking a bit more about the importance of it in my life. The first connection came from my friend Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) “A message for today … Gratitude isn't about pretending everything feels good—it's about honoring the full journey, even the hard parts.” In his post he goes on to share the connection that gratitude is part of appreciating the journey that we are in and realizing that if we keep going through the tough moments - we will eventually connect with how those tough moments will help us do more with our purpose. It will keep giving us more tools to fill in the gaps that help us and our lives, go in the direction we want it to go. The key is to understand this connection. The second connecting piece of gratitude I found was from Drew Maddux (@DrewMaddux) where he gave this intro thought: “When we feel deeply thankful, we naturally take actions that create more to be grateful for. What's one thing you're truly grateful for today?” This is a huge connection for me to having action taking being part of gratitude. Here is the post that Drew shared: “True gratitude isn't just a mental exercise - it's a full-body experience that propels action.” I really never saw the direct link to having gratitude and putting it into action! Powerful for me to find it and I hope equally powerful for me sharing it with you so that you can make a connection to these that you get fired up over! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I came across a reminder for all of us that I think we can connect with and remember. This comes from MyGlowEra (@MyGlowingEra) and the image shared of this quote placed on the steps of a staircase really makes the point powerful. It says: “Focus on the step in front of you, not the entire staircase.” It's the good ol' reminder about simply taking one step at a time with whatever we have to deal with or whatever we are going through. It connects with getting through some worries by simply (again, not always easy, but the step is simple) doing the next important thing that we need to do. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I came across something that I must have needed to see and be reminded of and it came from Bob Starkey (@CoachBobStarkey) reminds us: “Don't settle.” This quote he shares is from Nelson Mandela and it's a powerful one: “There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” I think it's a reminder for all of us to realize the importance of having passion in our lives for the things that we find are important to us. Things that we have deep down inside of ourselves that we are fired up over. Of course this is something that becomes a bit more on the front burner of our stoves as we get older. If we can grasp our own connection to this mindset sooner than later AND keep it in mind frequently, I think that great things can happen for ourselves and those that we love. Remember, as we get better - so do the people around us. I know I have settled plenty of times. In other words, I have not worked hard many times in my life on my purpose, my calling. Now that I have a little bit more time to reflect on this, I can see that I still can do something about not settling. The key here is - the same goes for you! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found a post that got me thinking about how much I need to find this. I'm talking about finding a “quiet mind.” It comes from Curious Minds (@CuriousMindsHub) where this post was shared: “A quiet mind … A quiet mind learns better. A quiet mind observes better. A quiet mind acts better.” Yep… I need a quiet mind more often. I need MY mind to be quiet more often. I think back to my past, when I was a little kid at times. I knew my mind was quieter at that time because of the things going around me that my mind was trying to deal with and think about. Today - I feel that it's multiplied many times more than that. It gets me thinking (and planning) about finding ways to slow my mind down - especially at night while I'm trying to sleep. I want to keep looking for ways to simplify my life and mind for that matter. Be more in the moment when I can remember to do that. I want to make my habits and choices fit into this a bit more. How about you? Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Looking at a few things this morning and this one got my attention. The reason of course, is that I needed to be reminded of it. It's from Words of Wise | Mindset Coach (@Wordofwise_) and it's a quote from Carl Jung who said “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” It reminds me to not focus on the challenging things that I have gone through or currently am going through. Instead, I need to focus on the things that I've been able to do that are good and helpful to others; along with to keep on doing to keep serving and making a difference for others. It's challenging to remember this when tough times are all around us, but there are plenty of examples of others going through it too. We must keep learning lessons every day, along with taking a few moments here and there to have the perspective in our lives to keep getting better. I want to be in the moment, right now to do something I know is good for me to do. Choices that help me to become who I choose to be and not stay weighed down by what I've been through before. Deep stuff here that has helped me tremendously and I hope it helps you too. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I came across a post the other day that stuck with me. This came from MLFootball (@MLFootball) and it was a thought that came from Los Angeles Rams head football coach Sean McVay. He said in order to grow as a person you need to struggle in life. “Show me anybody that's great in anything they do, I'll show you somebody that's persevered, demonstrated that mental toughness to overcome some obstacles and adversity” It's something to just sit back and take to heart. Nobody that has done anything worthwhile - big or small, has been without troubles, setbacks, doubts, obstacles, and of course failures. This got me thinking that I simply need to keep trying, every single day. There are billions of examples of this throughout history. Now of course I don't know about all of them. I do know about a few and that also tells me that those that I don't know about, aren't any less valuable. They did happen for sure. The things I'm going through, I can get through if I “simply” make the decision to keep going. You can do the same. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I started my day like I always do, looking for inspiration and lessons to learn from. I found this one from Damon West (@damonwest7), the co-author of the wonderful & powerful book, “The Coffee Bean.” (it's one you should make sure to check out). Most people let the day decide how they show up. The difference is choosing it before anything else does. That's where consistency and real leadership start.” This was a reminder for me to try and make the right choice, at the start of my day - each and every day! The post shared was this: “Start your day with one question: how am I going to show up today? For myself and for others. Because your attitude, your effort, and your presence will shape every room you walk into.” A question I need to ask myself, and looking back is a bit easier since things have already happened - Is on my “good” days, why were they good? Also on my “bad” days, why were they bad? I am betting that the start to each of those days had something to do with it. I am thinking that if each of us made a bit more of a conscious effort to start our days out thinking about how do we want to show up today? This goes for the person looking back at ourselves in the mirror, to all the different people that we come into contact with every day - especially our loved ones. Awesome reminder by an awesome difference maker. Thanks Damon!! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”Found a great post connected to “The Masters” (@TheMasters) - this post from Brad Stulberg (@BStulberg) where he shares a wonderful picture of golf fans watching “One of the best parts of the Masters golf tournament: the no phone rule. It's awesome to see so many people locked in and sharing an experience with full presence. As I write in The Way of Excellence: “Excellence requires intimacy—minimizing distractions and getting as close as possible to your pursuit. It is a powerful antidote to modern feelings of disconnection, dissociation, and numbness.” I have no doubt a big part of the aura at the Masters is its intimacy. This would be impossible if everyone had their phones. There's much to learn from this, and not just for golf.” I shared two posts about this on my Twitter / X account and I'll do the same on my Facebook page too - and I'll try to put them on Instagram too. The other one was from Matt Van Swol (@mattvanswol) where he shared this thought: “Say what you want about The Masters... But there is nowhere else on planet earth where you will see a photo of humans like this where not a single one of them is looking at a phone. Truly one of the most beautiful things.” As I'm typing this, I am asking for you to go use your “device” to look at people having an amazing time, when they are not using their “devices.” HA… as I'm typing this line, I had to laugh out loud as to what I'm asking you to do. I know I need to stay off my “devices”, but there are good things out there that we can connect with to help us live our best lives. Part of this for me coming up is a breakfast connection with one of my longest known & best friends, Scott. We have known each other for roughly 55 years and we had breakfast celebrating my birthday back a couple of months ago, and now it's his turn. This is one of those things that I know I need to continue to make time for because it's really what life is all about. Great lessons and reminders from sports, especially (what I feel) is the greatest sporting event around. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”This podcast from John O'Leary (@JOLearyInspires)- (Episode 870) This is an incredible episode that made a big impact on me while I was mowing my front lawn yesterday. John has a conversation with Piera Gelardi and here is a bit from the show notes: “Today, Piera shares how growing up in a small town in Maine shaped her sense of wonder, how building a global brand led to unexpected self-doubt and burnout, and how reclaiming play became her path back to creativity, connection, and joy. She explains practical ways to integrate playfulness into our daily lives and how small moments can shift perspectives, deepen connection, and bring more curiosity, wonder, and joy into everyday life.” As I was listening to this, there were many thoughts running through my head as to why I needed to connect to this connection of joy, wonder, happiness, authenticity, and to continue trying to be the best version of myself. One of the biggest impacts this made with me was connected to something from my previous episode, #1846 - “The Magic You're Looking For” and the part where my former student Ashley posted a picture from our Principles of Leadership class. It got me remembering that really, I don't think there was ever a day in my teaching career, where I did NOT laugh at school! Mostly from my students, but my coworkers too! How much I missed this truth in my life today being retired. It's something that I seek every day, and usually find it - joy, gratitude & laughing. What an important part of life! It's a must! “Send Coach John a message”I found a couple of items this morning that clicked with me, so much so that I didn't want to wait until I came out of the gym. One was a post from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) where he shared this gem: “The magic you're looking for is in the work you're avoiding.” - Chris Williamson said this. I have been avoiding things that I know I need to do. Some out of fear, worry, anxiety; but others because I'm wasting my time on other items that distract me. The other item of this podcast came from a former student. Ashley posted a picture of our Principles of Leadership class from 15 years ago!! Those “kids” were such a big part of not only that year for me, but also my entire career. Her post reminded me of the gratitude that I have for the thousands of people that I got a chance to work with while at Lake Shore High School. It also reminded me of how I'm actually still “teaching” that course! It is the foundation of this podcast and the lessons I'm sharing and still learning are things that I pick up every day. Amazing lessons that I'm glad to have shared before the gym instead of after. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I saw a gem this morning from Dolphins Enlighten (@embracetruejoy) where this was shared: “Focusing on what is going right, rather than what is wrong, improves your life! If you want to feel better then you need to think better!” This intro hit me as I know I've been on a journey to do this better and the post itself helps me to keep at it even more! Here's the post: “When you CHOOSE to FOCUS on what's going RIGHT instead of what's going wrong …when you CHOOSE to focus on what you can do instead of what you can't do … those are the times you will have the biggest breakthroughs in life!” This is something that I am finding out as I get older, to continue focusing on this, to keep getting better no matter how old I am. This is something for all of us to take to heart. Just keep going! Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I've been around a few different themes lately; of rooting for good people to have good things happen to them, not wasting focus or energy on things that don't matter and looking to make a difference with others. Part of it has been from sports - namely basketball and golf. The two winning coaches in the NCAA basketball tournaments - One is Cori Close, Head Coach at UCLA and on the men's side - Dusty May from the University of Michigan. Both talked about the importance of culture and character. Gary Woodland, a PGA tour golfer - coming out sharing his struggles from his brain tumor surgery and now dealing with PTSD. He is sharing it because he said he doesn't want to hide the fear any longer and that he knows that message can help others. He reminds people that it's important to talk to someone, don't take the battle on yourself. With what some other players are going through, namely Tiger Woods - it's good to see many people wanting the human being Tiger to be ok and get better and not so much the golfer. The Masters golf tournament is all about history, standards, tradition, adhering to doing things the right way and it's great to see in a world full of the opposite. It's a reminder for us to see how important those things are and that we can't forget important lessons from the past. Gary Vee says it all the time too. He genuinely cares about rooting for others. All the negativity and hatred out there from so many people, he feels sorry for those people. They are hurting inside and he has empathy for them. However, he's not going to let them affect him in doing the things he does. All of this is some powerful reminders for me to keep rooting for kind people and for the others that are not so kind, I guess I need to keep being the example for them to see that there is a different way of living. “Send Coach John a message”Listening to John O'Leary's podcast yesterday (find his website HERE), I was drawn to a piece of it where he was talking about Travis Sanders, an amputee who is a barber and so many other things. The biggest and best thing that he is, is that he is a difference-maker to so many people. I had the fortune to be on an online call yesterday, where Travis was the guest. It was a very uplifting conversation to see live, and hear from him on some of the things he's been through, his attitude for getting through the tough times and his calling to help others. Listen for yourself for the episode that connected some of this as John O'Leary shares on his Monday Moment segment - Listen HERE. “Send Coach John a message”I came across a fabulous post from Minions World (@minionswld) which shared this one sentence that hit me hard: “Forgive yourself for not knowing earlier what only time could teach.” It goes on to say that this is true “because the truth is, we can only understand certain things after we grow, after we go through life and after time quietly teaches us what we once didn't know.” This really hit me with how this sentence should also be connected to our relationships with other people - the people that we are really close with. Our pasts do inter-connect with those people that we are close to. Love these deep reflective points, as you can hear in my voice with this episode. Hope it makes an impact with you too! “Send Coach John a message”I found an awesome post from My Positive Outlooks (@mypositiveoutlooks) and (mypositiveoutlooks.com). The post shared this thought: “Today, I give thanks to everyone who's been part of my journey. Each person has taught me lessons and added color to my story. I'm grateful for the love, the laughter, the challenges, and even the struggles - because they've guided me as I continue moving through life.” We had a wedding this past weekend. We've known both the bride and groom for a long time. The groom since he was born and the bride since she was 5 years old. Their parents obviously for a long time too and so many other people. I was thinking about all of the people that we have known throughout our lives while sitting & listening to the great music that was playing from this amazing band they had. Then, I saw a former student and I went up to him to talk. He was there with his wife and he shared how they are expecting their 2nd child. I had a wonderful conversation with him and his wife and I told him how proud I was about him. I worked with his sister and brother too - all of them, “great kids.” As I sat back down to continue to enjoy the music, I got to thinking (and tearing up of course) how blessed I am to have had all of these students & players in my life, and how they affected me in so many positive ways. It helps to put more appreciation and gratitude into our lives when we recognize the amount of people that have been part of our lives - some offer love, awesome memories and are a fun part of our journeys. Others, they offered us maybe a ton of experience. This post really connected to me and helped me to see so much value that is a part of my life. Take a look at this statement and connect with the people that have been in your life & reflect on the amazing lessons you have learned from them. Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I found an awesome post from the Pat Summitt Foundation and it said this: “Whatever it is that you desire to do in life, have the courage and commitment to do it, and do it at your absolute best.” As I was seeing this, there were a couple of other things that I connected with this morning too, that helped to remind me why I'm trying to do what I do. No matter the setbacks, getting down on myself once in a while, feeling overwhelmed at times - it's all ok, when I recognize those feelings and then make the choice to not let them define me. I'm a life-long educator and coach who is always looking to encourage, inspire and make a difference for others. I am seeing things each and every day that help to reinforce meaning and passion into my life for doing what I know is helping others. Keep finding those things that inspire, motivate, light that spark inside of you - to keep doing what lights your soul on fire. Today I was connected to Devon Rodriguez - Links found HERE. Mel Robbins link HERE. Here is the link to the video of the two of them talking… great stuff… best use of 15 minutes for sure. “Send Coach John a message”Found a much needed reminder from Psyche Wizard (@PsycheWizard) where this quote was shared: “No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying.” - Tony Robbins. It got me thinking again, about overcoming setbacks and problems. Challenges, both small and not so small, need to be dealt with, instead of ignoring them or not even trying to take them on. I have been that person that doesn't try at times in my life and I don't want to be that person too much any more. When I am, I want to recognize it - ask for help if I need it, but to also actually do something to change it around. I'm looking to recognize the moment that I'm in and what's the right decision for that moment for me to become better, to accomplish something, to follow through on a promise made to myself, etc. Little reminders like this help keep me going and I hope it helps you too. “Send Coach John a message”With all the things happening around college basketball, March Madness, the Final 4, etc., I found a great clip from Dawn Staley who is the head coach of South Carolina Women's basketball team. Check out the clip HERE. She shares with everyone how she views her life as owing the game of basketball. All of the things that the game has brought to her, she wants to pay it back. I like this. I like the connection to her team, their families, etc., and she's helping to pay off her debt to the game, by helping others gain from it too. Imagine feeling this way about things that have brought you things in your life that you are grateful for. Life-changing things. For me it has to do with tons of people that have made a difference for me along with the field of education and the game of basketball too. This is the first time I'm lumping all three of these things together and it's putting a big smile on my face. I will spend the rest of my life doing my best to pay all of these “back.” What “debt” do you need to pay back?? Thanks for listening. “Send Coach John a message”I just found a fabulous reminder about life and there are two parts to this episode. First, the post came from Gratitude HQ (@gratefuledu64) and the intro to the post is this: “Let's “give goodness”! Wishing you a wonderful day!” We all need well wishes every day for sure. The picture with this post shared this: “Life is an echo. What you send out, comes back. What you sow, you reap. What you give, you get. What you see in others, exists in you. Remember, life is an echo. It always gets back to you. So give goodness.” What a powerful and true statement and an even more important reminder for all of us. I have always "loosely" connected with this statement and realized there is truth to it. Now with having age on my side a bit more, I know it's true and I am focused more and more about what I put out to the world. The second part to this episode is an example of this statement. My difference-maker of a friend Denyse from Canada, reached out to me with an encouraging message this morning. She is one of so many people in my life that help me in so many ways. They remind me not only that this statement of life is true, but also give me so many reasons to keep working hard, doing my best as I look to “pay” the debt of them making a difference in my life. There is another post that I saw today that connects to this and I think I will share it for tomorrow's episode. Read (or listen to) the statement again about life is really an echo. Then do things on an every day basis, to connect your life to it. Thanks for listening.
