On vous propose de réécouter un de nos épisodes préférés en attenant rentrée : Buena Vista Social Club (1997), diffusé pour la première fois le 15/06/2023.A la fin des années 90s, le monde entier découvre le Buena Vista Social Club et se passionne tout à coup pour la musique cubaine. Nach dem missglückten* Versuch eines Germanistikstudiums in München studierte er in Gießen Psychologie.** Auf Promotion und Habilitation in Nürnberg folgten akademische Stationen an den Universitäten in Bamberg, Vilnius und Kassel. Schließlich fand Paul an der Johannes-Kepler-Universität Linz, wo er nun Angewandte Psychologie unterrichtet, dauerhaft ein warmes Professorenbüro. Zu seinen Forschungsgebieten gehören u. a. die psychologische Bedeutung von Erwerbsarbeit und Erwerbslosigkeit, die weitverbreitete Unterschätzung der Wirkung von Werbung sowie die Analyse psychischer Bedürfnisse. Begeisterung für Lyrik empfindet er, seit er in seiner Jugend die Dichter des Expressionismus für sich entdeckt hat. Neben diversen Fachpublikationen Veröffentlichungen von Gedichten in Anthologien und Literaturzeitschriften, dazu wurde Paul mehrfach bei Lyrikwettbewerben ausgezeichnet, z. B. beim Lyrikstier 2018 (Jurypreis), beim Preis für politische Lyrik 2017 (1. Platz), beim Hochstadter Stier 2014 (Publikumspreis 1. Platz) und beim Jokers-Lyrik-Preis 2013 (TextArt-Sonderpreis). Alternativ zu der hier beschriebenen Biografie erschiene ihm auch ein Leben als Seetang erstrebenswert (siehe Seite 105 in diesem Band). * Ursache unklar, vermutlich Faulheit. ** Selbstverständlich mit dem Ziel, sich selbst zu therapieren. Nach der elften an der eigenen Person diagnostizierten psychischen Störung verwarf er das Projekt 'Selbstheilung' allerdings als utopisch. Stolz zwingt er seine Podcast-Kollegen, aber genau diesen Umstand nicht anzusprechen. "Changuito", sobrenombre con el que pasó a la historia de la música popular, falleció en La Habana el 6 de junio de 2025. Con un grupo de grabaciones correspondientes a su paso por el combo del pianista Felipe Dulzaides, repasamos muy brevemente la andadura artística de este genio de la percusión. En "Los Armónicos" ingresó a mediados de los 60 recomendado por el baterista Tony Valdés. Mientras crecía su horizonte rítmico, compartió atriles con Rembert Egues, Carlos del Puerto, Sergio Vitier, Armando Romeu jr, Ahmed Barroso, José Franca y, por supuesto: Felipe Dulzaides. Muy provechosa fue su estancia durante poco más de tres años en esa importante formación donde comenzó a alternar las tumbadoras con el drums, antecedente del sonido que años más tarde consolidará integrando la tribu "vanvanera". José Luis Quintana, junto a Pupy Pedroso y Juan Formell, echó a andar el formidable motor rítmico y melódico del songo, género que desde 1970 bajo el reinado vanvanero actualizó las charangas, poniendo a bailar a los cubanos durante décadas. Su originalidad desde el set percutivo dejó para la posteridad la leyenda de la "mano secreta". Músico creativo, conocedor a profundidad del espectro rítmico cubano, completó su paso de mayor calibre por los escenarios, dejando en la discografia de esta banda de primera línea una huella memorable para las nuevas generaciones de músicos y bailadores. Finalizando los años 90 la suerte y una producción discográfica le permitieron coincidir con uno de sus ídolos de juventud: el gran Carlos "Patato" Valdés. Con algunos cortes del álbum "Ritmo y Candela" es un verdadero gusto honrar el paso luminoso de este grande de la percusión por el parnaso de la música popular cubana. José Antonio Méndez: "El King", "El Ronco", cada día canta mejor sus boleros y los de otros compositores de su tiempo. En el México de los primeros años 50 fue donde verdaderamente alcanzó reconocimiento como compositor e intérprete. En su estilo suave y nocturnal el feeling cubano dejaba su huella en aquellas tierras mientras en los discos RCA Víctor sus primeros grandes éxitos marcaban su trascendencia artística. Precisamente con un grupo de canciones de autores aztecas recordaremos a José Antonio, teniendo en cuenta que el 10 de junio de 2025 se cumplieron 36 años de su muerte en un lamentable accidente de tránsito. Escucharemos, a la manera del King: "Xochimilco" de Agustin Lara, "Hay que vivir el momento" de Miguel Ángel Valladares, "La puerta" de Luis Demetrio, "Te me olvidas" de Vicente Garrido y "Silenciosa" de Mario Ruiz Armengol. El Combo "Batanga" respaldado por el sello TucXone Records hizo su aparición en el mundo del disco con sendas ediciones en físico y en digital. Equilibrado y certero toque retro reviviendo la sonoridad que cautivó al Nueva York latino de los años 60. Liderado por el guitarrista Julián Olivares y con un fabuloso Alejandro Gutiérrez en el apartado vocal este álbum es una de esas maravillas que vale la pena rastrear en las plataformas online o en las tiendas madrileñas especializadas en vinilos. Aunque nos identifica el título de uno de los sones montunos clásicos de la música popular cubana, comenzaremos con una muestra de ciertas melodías que, a comienzos de los años 60, de alguna manera consiguieron suavizar la banda sonora de aquellos tiempos de cambios radicales. Martha Strada, el violinista urugüayo Federico Britos y el trombonista Pucho Escalante a la cabeza del Noneto Cubano de Jazz, en un salto de casi cuatro décadas, darán paso a sonidos más contemporáneos. Manolo Miyares en saxo, Oliver Valdés en drums, Néstor del Prado en bajo eléctrico y Tony Rodríguez en piano, desde una presentación en las tablas del legendario "Amadeo Roldán", nos recuerdan cómo sonaba "M.O.N.T". Algunas maravillas de la música popular cubana. Entre ellas sobresalió sin dudas la maestría de "Los Papines" en la rumba y el guaguancó. En la frecuencia musical de Cubakústica unos minutos con el gran Miguelito Cuni junto al conjunto de sus grandes éxitos: "Chappotin y sus estrellas". Música cubana por el mundo a la manera del trío mexicano "Los Panchos", fundado en el Nueva York del año 1944. Gil, Navarro y Avilés, en sus grabaciones para la etiqueta norteamericana Columbia, incluyeron una buena cantidad de sones, guarachas y boleros de autores cubanos. Hoy les escucharemos: "El guarapo y la melcocha"; "Parece que va a llover" y "Quiéreme mucho". El estilo de la vedette Josephine Baker y la antológica señal de la CMQ RadioCentro nos traen el esplendor artístico de La Habana de la primera mitad de los años 50 y algo de la obra del malogrado pianista y compositor Orlando de la Rosa. A continuación algunos de los éxitos iniciales de Blanca Rosa Gil que el sello Modiner colocaba allá por 1960 en los tocadiscos cubanos. En la despedida Carlos Embale, el trío La Rosa y el Trío Oriental cantan en grande algunas de las creaciones del auténtico Rey de la Guaracha: Ñico Saquito.

In the 1920s, Candela shaped Manhattan with the most celebrated and influential apartment houses of the time, which would become the crown jewels of the New York's skyline. In fact, even a century later, these are still the most desired, legendary, the most luxurious buildings in New York.While you won't find Candela's name in the classical books on 20th century architecture, this gifted architect, an Italian immigrant who graduated from Columbia in 1915, invented the visual built fabric of residential Manhattan. While creating the best apartment houses in history—majestic, with formal galleries, grand scale rooms, high ceilings, and perfect classical proportions—he gifted New Yorkers a unique collective memory. Her latest film, Same, Again, makes its world premiere at the festival on 25 February 2025.This improvised drama follows a Colombian theatre troupe who join together to bring the play La Casa de Bernada Alba (The House of Bernada Alba) by Federico Garcia Lorca to life on stage. This play follows the impact of men upon women, which then becomes a textual point within Same, Again, as one of the guiding forces behind this staged appearance is a man.Same, Again deals with impactful themes of trauma, showing the power of coercion and control that takes place from the foundational aspects of putting on a play - as we see in some intense and controlling audition sequences which forces actors to put themselves into vulnerable situations - to the final performance. Throughout the play, the actors each expose their own vulnerabilities, insecurities, and exposure of their own past traumas. What results in a narrative that delves into male-created trauma, all the while giving agency back to those who have experienced pain.In the following interview, recorded ahead of the films world premiere at Queer Screen on 25 February 2025, Ruth talks about the foundational work of the film, what it means to be able to give space to trauma on screen, and about her work with long time partner Silvia Santamaría.Queer Screen continues its cinematic run until 27 February 2025, so you've got plenty of time to head along and catch a film in a cinema before this years festival heads online for the On Demand section of the festival, which runs Australia wide from 28 February to 10 March 2025.
