Eliezer Sherbatov has played hockey all around the world. Born in Israel to Russian parents, with a career that's taken him from Quebec to Kazakhstan, Slovakia and Ukraine, Sherbatov has wandered between worlds, considered an outsider by every culture in which he's played. He was the first Israeli player to compete in the Kontinental Hockey League and remains captain of Israeli's national men's hockey team. When Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, he found himself nearly trapped in the country, making an 11th-hour escape to his adoptive home in Canada. What's perhaps most remarkable is how he's accomplished all this while while suffering from drop foot, a handicap that forces him to limp everywhere—except on the ice, where the stiffness of his hockey skates doubles as a brace. Sherbatov is the subject of a new book, My Left Skate: The Extraordinary Story of Eliezer Sherbatov, by Anna Rosner, published by Yellow Dog, coming out October 2022. He and Rosner join to discuss the new book, his life's story and his excellent hockey hair. Credits Menschwarmers is hosted by James Hirsh and Gabe Pulver, and produced and edited by Michael Fraiman. The hardest part in this fitness journey (and in life in general) is that there is always something happening. How you react is the key for your life. You are the sum of your habits. Today I am talking about the power of not giving up. I shared my story how I made it to professional ice hockey player, without any talent. Just when hard work started to pay off I had serious injury. It ended up being turning point of my career - in a good way. I share couple similar stories from my clients when they would normally quit but this time they didn´t. I also talked about How "short" break is ruining your progress in fitness. I wrote this article back in 2019, I still think it´s one of the most valuable articles I ever wrote. One of Seth's early sports heroes, Peter McNab joins the show to discuss his extensive career. Peter played in the NHL between 1973 and 1987. He played for the Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, and ultimately, the New Jersey Devils. There he played for his father Max McNab, who was the team's general manager. Upon his retirement, he moved to the broadcast booth, where he called Devils' games from 1987-1995. Then, he moved to Colorado and became the TV analyst for the Colorado Avalanche since their move from Quebec in 1995. This episode covers his career but focuses on the Devils' stint as well as the early years of the Avalanche. Seth stated he began watching hockey with the Devils' first game, and Peter was instrumental in those formative years. McNab's first season in the booth was the year the Devils made the playoffs for the first time in their history and concluded with their first-ever Stanley Cup Championship. Furthermore, Seth covered the Avalanche from 1996-1998, intersecting with McNab once again. Peter has been battling cancer and has been continuing his role with the Avs 2022 Stanley Cup Championship (which not enough time in the podcast is spent on).
