This week's guest is our friend Laurette Lynn. You might remember her from her season 1, episode 14 where we talked about trust and dealing with the first stages of the pandemic. In this episode we explore what changes have happened in her life over the past two years and if she views the world differently or the same. If you've kept up with me over the past 15 months, you know that I have heavily invested in OKC Improv. It is a non-profit organization that tries to spread awareness of the art form by showcasing world-class talent and offering classes for students to learn various aspects to practice in real life. I specifically an reaching out to those who have teenagers - there are classes starting October 1 for the teens that give you a couple hours to do something else. Both teen and adult classes are available. Check all of this out at okcimprov.com I absolutely love Laurette. Though we have only known each other 7 years, she really does feel like a lifelong friend. I hope you enjoy this show as we touch base!

Laurette Lynn: Unplugged Education | Steve Hargadon | Feb 7 2012 by Steve Hargadon
David DeLugas has 35 years of experience practicing family law. During that time he has observed some disturbing trends in state intrusions into the parent-child relationship. Today he serves as Executive Director and General Counsel for the National Association of Parents, a 501(c)(3) member charitable association. David DeLugas and I discuss: the problems created by divorce + family court - school attendance: how schools create criminals out of parents - is there an anti-family ideology at work? - CPS intrusions - the public's assumption of benevolence when it comes to bureaucracies - zero tolerance - Lenore Skenazy and free-range kids - helicopter parenting enforced by law - the long-term costs of over-parenting by government From ParentsUSA.org: The Voice for Parents in the USA. Relying only on the U.S. Constitution, the National Association of Parents preserves and supports the parent-child relationship and the right of parents to raise their own child as they see fit, so long as the child is not harmed through strategic litigation and through education and lobbying to shape public policy. As our membership grows, so, too, will our economic clout and ability to support parents and children fighting and coping with serious medical issues, to fund child abuse prevention and children’s medical research, particularly the rare illnesses and diseases that are severely underfunded, and to secure benefits and discounts for our member parents. Laurette Lynn returns for a discussion about how parents and educators can improve communication and connection with young people. From LauretteLynn.com: With an emphasis on communicating with youth, and infused with critical reasoning, we talk about perfecting parenting. We make a distinction between education and schooling and the ways in which destructive communication can negatively impact personal growth. And we discuss why we project our esteem issues onto our children. This truly is an intelligent, lively and great conversation. It is long, so take it with you and listen in segments, but I promise you, it’s worth every second! How do teens respond to condescension? How do young children respond to praise? Should we even call young humans, “Children”? What is “Peaceful Parenting” and can aggressive people even be peaceful parents? Why are teenagers rebellious? And do they have to be? An interview with Laurette Lynn, author, speaker and host of the Unplugged Mom internet talk show. Laurette's work emphasizes the need for families to unplug from mainstream assumptions in learning and living, disconnect from the artificial process of life and discover the freedom and joy in learning and living more authentically. In the interview she talks about freedom from school for kids and families. Laurette explains the choice that she made not to send her kids to school "because they don't need it". She shares her thoughts on how you can raise your kids free from school too.
Laurette Lynn and I discuss homeschooling with Professor Robert Kunzman. From unpluggedmom.com: Dr. Robert Kunzman, associate professor at Indiana University teaches courses related to secondary education curriculum and instruction, including an ongoing seminar in the Community of Teachers Program. Professor Kunzman has conducted independent research on homeschooling. You can review his work on his website. Professor Kunzman’s book Write These Laws On Your Children is also available. While he supports home education as a reasonable option, he does still feel that home ed families should be supervised and subject to standards and regulation by the board of education. It’s for the protection of the children. Now anyone familiar with me and Unplugged Mom already knows that I’m not exactly in agreement with regulation on home education so there was a matter of disagreement there. However, I have to say that despite our differences there were many points of agreement. I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with the Professor, I am grateful for the time he gave us to discuss his work and thoughtful opinions and would be honored to talk education and home ed with him sometime again. Jan Irvin from Gnostic Media is interviewed by Laurette Lynn aka the Unplugged Mum about the Trivium. The first three of the seven liberal arts, the Trivium, focus on the use of language and thought- the world of the mind. General Grammar, Aristotelian Logic, and Classical Rhetoric comprise the first three rules-based subjects of the 7 Liberal Arts and Sciences. As these disciplines are learned and practiced together, they form the overarching, symbiotic system for establishing clarity and consistency of personal thought called the Trivium. 1) General Grammar Answers the question of the Who, What, Where, and the When of a subject. Discovering and ordering facts of reality comprises basic, systematic Knowledge 2] Formal Logic Answers the Why of a subject. Developing the faculty of reason in establishing valid [i.e., non-contradictory relationships among facts, systematic Understanding 3] Classical Rhetoric Provides the How of a subject.Applying knowledge and understanding expressively comprises Wisdom or, in other words, it is systematically useable knowledge and understanding www.triviumeducation.com
