What happens when our kids spend nine hours a day on screens? Dr Justin Coulson sits down with world-leading researcher Professor Jean Twenge (author of Ten Rules for Raising Kids in a High Tech World) to unpack the hidden costs of our always-online culture — and how parents can reclaim calm, connection and control. From brain changes to “go touch grass” moments, Jean shares the science behind tech overload and practical rules that actually work. KEY POINTS: Why social media under 16 is a terrible idea — and why government regulation matters The shocking truth about teens’ 9-hour daily screen time How smartphones reshape childhood: less sleep, less play, less joy The “basic phone” revolution — why dumb phones might just save your child’s brain How to set firm rules (without becoming the enemy) Real-world freedom: why outdoor play is safer than scrolling The single biggest rule every parent should enforce tonight QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “In ten years we’ll look back at giving kids smartphones at age eleven and think — what were we thinking?” — Professor Jean Twenge RESOURCES MENTIONED: Ten Rules for Raising Kids in a High Tech World — Professor Jean Twenge Heads Up Alliance (Australia) Beginner Phones for Tweens & Teens [Free PDF from Rebecca Sparrow] Wait Until 8th Movement The Light Phone Unplugged Parenthood ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: No phones in bedrooms. Ever. Delay social media until at least 16 — ideally later. Swap smartphones for basic phones to keep kids connected, not consumed. Model healthy tech habits — your kids are watching. Encourage real-world independence — let them walk, play, and explore offline. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This past week, FOX News' Dana Perino joined the FOX News Rundown as a special guest host to speak with Rabbi Angela Buchdahl, author of the new book, “Heart of a Stanger”. As the first Asian American Rabbi, Buchdahl serves as the Senior Rabbi of Central Synagogue in New York City, becoming the first woman to lead one of the world's largest synagogues in its nearly 200-year history. She shared with Dana what it was like to be born in Seoul to a Korean Buddhist mother and a Jewish American father, and discussed the challenges she faced on her journey to becoming one of today's most admired religious leaders. The two also discussed how our society can work to combat the recent rise in antisemitism around the world, our country's growing political divide, and our society's addiction to our cell phones. We often must cut interviews short during the week, but we thought you might like to hear more of this very candid and insightful conversation. Today on the FOX News Rundown Extra, we will share Dana Perino's entire discussion with Rabbi Angela Buchdahl. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
We often deal with strange control module issues- codes, warning lights, communication faults, or reduced functions. While the causes are numerous for each individual situation, one thing that may "fix" the issue is a battery disconnect or capacitive discharge. I'll share 3 vehicles today where a CAP discharge was the fix for strange problems. Lithium-ion battery devices are just about everywhere in our homes, from smartphones to cordless power tools. While the devices are convenient, it's important to know safety tips to prevent lithium-ion batteries from overheating and starting a fire. What should I look for when buying rechargeable items? Look for a safety certification from a nationally recognized testing laboratory like UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or ETL (Intertek). These certifications show the lithium-ion battery inside the product meets minimum U.S. safety standards for electrical and fire safety. When are lithium-ion batteries most at risk of catching fire? Charging is the riskiest time for lithium-ion batteries. To stay safe, always use the charger that came with the device or one that's approved by the manufacturer. Using an incompatible charger can lead to overheating, which increases the risk of fire. What are the warning signs that a charging battery might be unsafe? Watch for these common signs of battery failure: Unusual heat. A bulging or swollen battery. A strange, sweet, or metallic smell. If you notice any of these, stop using the device right away and unplug it from the charger. Where is the best place to store lithium-ion battery-powered devices? Store devices in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid keeping battery-powered items in cars, garages, or outdoor sheds, especially during very hot or cold weather. What's the safest way to dispose of lithium-ion batteries? Never put lithium-ion batteries in the regular trash or recycling bin. Damaged or improperly discarded batteries can ignite and cause fires in garbage trucks and landfills. Instead, take them to a certified battery recycling center. Find a location near you at Call2Recycle.org. Can I safely charge an e-bike and scooter indoors? No. The safest place to charge e-bikes and scooters is on a hard surface outdoors out of direct sunlight in a dry place. How do I safely charge devices with lithium-ion batteries? While no method is completely risk-free, you can reduce the fire risk by: Charging on a hard, non-flammable surface. Keeping devices away from flammable materials (such as beds, rugs, and couches). Monitoring the device. Unplugging after charging. How do I know if my device has a lithium-ion battery? Many everyday rechargeable devices use lithium-ion batteries, including: Smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. Laptops. Power tools. E-bikes, e-scooters, and electric vehicles (EVs). Electric toothbrushes. Check the product manual or labeling for battery information. In this eye-opening episode of The Collective Perspective, we dismantle the idea that “ugly” is objective. From social media filters to public opinion, from art critiques to self-doubt, we ask: Who decides what's beautiful and why do we care so much? We explore how perception shapes our reality and how calling something “hideous” might say more about the observer than the observed. Whether it's politics, art, body image, or identity, this episode challenges us to examine the lens we use before labeling the world around us. ✨ Featuring real stories, cultural insight, and some hard-hitting self-reflection this one's for anyone ready to question the narrative and fix the filter in their own eyes. Have you ever wondered if you're actually being guided—or if you're just making it all up in your head? For the past couple of months, I've been unplugging from distractions and leaning deeper into what I call my “faith muscles.” And here's what I realized: it wasn't that guidance wasn't there. It was that I doubted it. I questioned if I even had guidance. I worried I was bothering my guides, or that I didn't deserve support, or that maybe I was just crazy for even asking. But the truth? Guidance is always there. The signs, the nudges, the clarity, they're available in every moment. The only barrier is our own mind. In this episode of Woo Woo Wednesday, I share what I've discovered about: Why we doubt or dismiss our own guidance. The hidden beliefs that make us feel unworthy of support. How to break down the barriers between you and your higher self. A simple 3-step way to build trust in your connection. If you've ever wrestled with the question, “Am I really being guided—or am I just making this up?”, this episode will help you remember what's always been true: you are never separate, and you are never unsupported. Send us a textThis week, I'm talking about screens, social media, AI — and what it means to live well in a world that's always online. I share stories about raising my kids, my own walks and speed walks this week, and a moving conversation with a young man who stepped away from the online rabbit hole and found peace. We'll look at research on how too much time online can lead to anxiety, depression, and compulsive checking behaviors — and why compartmentalizing our digital life may be one of the most powerful tools for our mental health and our Project Weight Loss.I'll also share my honest thoughts on AI — why I love using it, but why I wish we had more guardrails in place. And I'll leave you with a few questions to reflect on as you plan your own week and decide where you want your attention to go.Join me for this episode — it's heartfelt, hopeful, and just might inspire you to close the laptop or put the phone down and get outside.Quote of the Week:"Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master." — Christian Lous Lange Citations Boers, E., Afzali, M. In this episode, we sit down for a conversation with author and speaker Hannah Brencher to talk more about the importance of unplugging, so whether you're wrestling with busyness, distraction, or longing for deeper connections, we this conversation will help and encourage you.
Stephanie sits down with author Hannah Brencher to discuss the practical power of unplugging from technology to deepen our connection with God, others, and oneself. Drawing from her book, The Unplugged Hours, and her personal journey, Hannah shares practical insights and spiritual wisdom that offer a clear pathway for anyone feeling overwhelmed, distracted, or disconnected. Unplugging is less about abandoning technology and more about reclaiming the present, deepening contentment, and embracing our true identity in Christ. Through practical disciplines, humble self-awareness, and a commitment to delighting in God right where we are, we find the spacious, unhurried lives that our souls crave. 1. Recognizing the Need to Unplug Hannah recounts her realization that constant connection to her phone was leaving her exhausted, burnt out, and spiritually depleted. She felt a persistent need to always be “on,” a sensation many people can relate to in today's always-online world. Symptoms that signal it might be time to unplug include: Feeling tired and perpetually “on” Burnout and lack of creativity Scattered attention and apathy towards loved ones False sense of control by consuming endless information Numbing and anxiety, worsened by exposure to social media algorithms designed to keep us engaged through fear or desire Unplugging, for Hannah, didn't mean abandoning her phone entirely, but initiating a conscious journey toward better habits and rhythms. 2. The Power of Contentment and Presence Hannah acknowledges and embraces the struggle—and ultimately, the spiritual discipline—of contentment. Social media and the internet constantly convince us that fulfillment is elsewhere, which removes us from both the present moment (time) and from our current environment (space). Hannah draws from the Apostle Paul's words about learning contentment, framing it as a dance that takes practice and humility. For example, Hannah's practice of “grounding” by jotting down details of the present moment (in a notebook, not a phone) helps her drop into her actual life, savoring little joys, and affirming that “this is enough.” Unlike capturing moments for others to see on social media, this form of slow documentation, she says, nurtures personal satisfaction and removes the compulsion for outside validation. 3. Rethinking Productivity and Success Stephanie and Hannah highlight the toxicity of equating productivity with worth. Hannah shares how unplugging redefined her sense of value from accomplishment and approval to simply being present with God. True productivity, she discovered, isn't about checking boxes, but about what God is cultivating within us through periods of stillness—patience, peace, faithfulness. Success, then, transforms from external achievement to delighting in God and being aware of His presence. Hannah echoes Stephanie's insight that “a successful life is a succession of days and moments where I'm delighting in God.” 4. Practicing Stillness and Receiving God's Presence Jesus' example comes alive as the epitome of unhurried purpose—accomplishing all the Father's will without rushing. Unplugging isn't just for personal peace, but to become truly available to God, hearing His voice and responding with readiness and openness (“Here I am, Lord”). Through intentionally slowing down and savoring “vegetable moments”—Hannah's metaphor for embracing the slow, nourishing parts of life—we open ourselves to the real rewards: deeper relationship with God and others. MORE ABOUT HANNAH BRENCHER Hannah Brencher says, “I love teaching individuals how to build intentional lives they love through the power of habit and meaningful routines. I am the founder of The World Needs More Love Letters, author of 4 books, a TED Speaker, and an online educator teaching others how to establish important disciplines within their lives. Words are my everything and nothing fires me up more than getting to teach people about the power of discipline. Establishing better discipline was an essential piece in dealing with depression and I love seeing the freedom it unlocks in others as they establish better habits and rhythms in their own life. I'm a proud New Englander living in city of Atlanta with my husband Lane and our little girl Novalee. You can find us trying out new restaurants across the city, getting dangerously cutthroat over playing Battleship, playing at the park, and cozying up to watch a thriller (or Moana if Novi gets to pick) with our rescue pup Tuesday.” More at https://hannahbrenchercreative.com/ MORE ABOUT “THE UNPLUGGED HOURS” Join the Challenge: One Thousand Unplugged Hours in One Year Former social media addict, Hannah Brencher discovered first-hand that turning off her phone had a substantial impact on her mental health, relationships, time management, and outlook on the world. Like so many of us, Hannah had been turning to her phone to cope with life in a time of isolation and uncertainty. But those coping mechanisms had become habits she didn't know how to break until she truly committed herself to one simple yet profound act: log 1,000 phone-free hours in a year. Now, in The Unplugged Hours, she demonstrates how the act of powering down and reducing the habit of a constantly plugged-in lifestyle can change your entire life. No matter what you do for a living, how much time your apps save you, or how much entertainment your phone brings, it is possible to unplug—and rediscover the richness of life on the other side. A powerful weaving of memoir, cultural commentary, and spiritual insights, this life-changing book will help you: Reclaim your ability to be present and engaged with the world around you. Swap the hurried, constant pace of technology for a steadier, more rooted way of living. Establish your own unplugged rituals and rhythms in daily life. The Unplugged Hours gives you the practical ideas and spiritual inspiration you need to stop scrolling and start living. So join the challenge: put your phone down and live your life. Details and registration here: https://www.gospelspice.com/prayer There are a few things in our Christian life that we know we should do more, or at least better – and prayer just might top the list. Prayer is a mystery. Why would a conversation with a human have any influence on God's eternal, sovereign plan? It defies logic, and beckons love. How can God, the Almighty Lord of Hosts, be this close, this personal? It defies understanding, and beckons involvement. But, lack of time, inspiration, and discipline, combined with the ruthless tyranny of our busy lives, push prayer to the periphery, to the “one day I'll get to it” pile. And yet, we can excel at what we endeavor to undertake. So, why isn't prayer more of a spiritual priority? Could we develop a mindset around prayer that made it attractive, inspiring, even maybe delightful? What if we attuned our spiritual ears to listen to God, and our spiritual eyes to see His provision? As an unassuming student, I'm going to humbly offer to share the little I have learned from others about the joy of prayer. I will give us theology, practical tips, and useful resources, sharing what works for me as we, together, learn to pray. If you find prayer intimidating, or if your lack of prayer makes you feel guilty or “less than,” then this is the place for you! If you have been a student of prayer for many years, this is the place for you too! If you have breath in your lungs, then prayer can become one of the deepest joys of your day. Don't miss out! A PERSPECTIVE ABOUT PRAYER To pray is to believe that God not only hears, but that He responds. It is to stand in the gap for a broken world, wielding the authority of Christ, empowered by the Spirit, and trusting in the goodness of the Father. The question is not whether prayer works, but whether we are willing to pray the kinds of prayers that invite God's Kingdom into the darkest places of the earth—and of our own hearts. We may never fully understand the mechanics of prayer, or how it intersects with God's sovereignty, but we are not called to understand everything. We are called to be faithful. And faithfulness means showing up—in prayer, in persistence, in expectation. So today, let us pray not only for the comfort of our hearts, but for the transformation of the world. Let us take our place as image-bearers, co-laborers, and co-heirs. Let us believe that God is still listening—and still acting. Because He is. There's only one way to find out what might happen when we truly pray like this. Let's begin. THE MINDSET BEHIND THIS COURSE Before we begin, let me tell you the obvious: I don't really know how to pray. I'm a humble student and absolute beginner at the holy endeavor that is prayer. So, this course isn't really about what I've learned, or any wisdom I might have gathered. But, I've sat at the feet of many prayer warriors over the decades, through books and teachings. So, I'll share what I learned from them. Humility is going to be our primary heart posture! With each lesson, I will offer a few thoughts, practices, and ideas – with much humility, and not taking myself too seriously. I will also share her favorite books and resources about prayer. FInally, I will introduce you to some of the most influential prayer warriors of our history as the Body of Christ. Most importantly, I will invite YOU to pray! Learning to pray comes from praying. Our humble ambition is to inspire you to pray, and to give you a few tips on how to do that. Then, it's up to you! Prayer is a lifelong endeavor. Let's make it delightful together! Jen Wilson admittedly loves her work. As partner and co-founder at ConvergenceCoaching LLC, she's on the road often, advising accounting firms and profession leaders. Sometimes, that travel and love of work can give her colleagues cause for concern. “It troubles them if they can't see me unplug,” Wilson said. This episode of the JofA podcast, the second of a three-episode Midwest series focusing on summer travel, features Wilson talking about the value of time away. It was recorded in person, at her house in Bellevue, Neb. Wilson discussed the benefits of a two-week, end-of-year closure and why despite understanding the importance of a refresh, she sometimes takes work with her on vacation. Additionally, as the independent facilitator for the National Pipeline Advisory Group (NPAG), Wilson is plugged in to the talent issues facing the profession. She provided an update on where things stand with accounting talent with 2026 about four months away. What you'll learn from this episode: · Wilson's background as a longtime resident of Nebraska. · The reasons she travels often for work in the summer. · Why Wilson sometimes takes work with her on vacation – and her family's reaction to that decision. · The benefits of an extended, full-company closure. · Her assessment of the accounting talent pipeline. · The meaning she finds in the quote, “Your direction is more important than your speed.”

Megan chats with her husband Dan about the unexpected moment that sparked her memoir and how a decade of RV travel inspired the story she needed to tell first. Dan Porta is a team builder at heart, currently growing Strategic Partnerships for Eat Blog Talk and further developing in-person events. With past experience in educational travel, Dan has cultivated a passion for bringing people together and facilitating positive learning experiences where meaningful connections can flourish. It's all about other people. This episode dives into the deeply personal, wildly entertaining journey behind Megan's upcoming memoir. After years of wanting to write a book, it wasn't until she unplugged from work completely that the right story emerged. From Montana storms to family campfires, Megan shares how storytelling, self-discovery, and seasonality aligned at just the right time to bring this project to life. Key points discussed include: - Unplugging creates clarity: Taking a real break from work and noise can unlock ideas you did not know were waiting. - Let the project find you: When something feels off, it might not be time yet. When something feels right, take action (don't put it off, otherwise it may never happen). - Follow the creative flow: Some projects do not need a plan, just space, trust, and consistent action. - Write your story before your strategy: Sometimes personal truth needs to be told before you can teach others how to find theirs. - Embrace emotional resistance: The parts of a project that feel hardest to write are often the most meaningful. - Make space for your next thing: Restructure your schedule if needed, aligned creative work deserves a seat at the table. Episode 76 Today's guest is Allie Marie Smith, life coach, founder and creator of Wonderfully Made and author of the new book, Social Media Reset: A 30 Day Guided Journey to Unplug, Reconnect with God and Reclaim Your Joy. In this episode, Allie and I talk about how so many young girls don't have a true understanding of who they are in the eyes of God. That can cause them to turn to other things to feel worthy—alcohol, drugs, promiscuity and even social media. The problem is, of course, that those things don't satisfy. Since 2010 the suicide rates for young people ages 10-24 has gone up 62% and over 145% among girls. Some teen girls are spending more than 40 hours a week on social media. These numbers should make us sit up and take notice! Allie calls this a technologically induced mental health crisis. Alli's response to this crisis has been to share her own story of a mental health crisis and then to offer help to girls just like her to have something better. She wants to help them understand the truth of their worth to God in a world that is trying to tell them otherwise. In this episode, we discuss having radical boundaries with social media, how social media can be used for good, but it can be used for bad or can cause harm, and how social media can keep us from being present in the moment. We encourage you to delay social media for your kids as long as possible and explain why you should. This is an invitation to step away from the digital world and live the life we were intended to live—deeply connected to God and others. We are inviting you and the people you love to an unplugged and flourishing life. Junior Counselors (Sessions 1 & 2, 2025) talk about their experience at GAC, being off screens for a month, and the values and practices they're taking home with them. Late last year, the Pew Research Center conducted a survey of almost fourteen hundred teens, ages thirteen to seventeen, to come to an understanding of our teenagers' experiences and attitudes around social media and their mental health. One of the most interesting findings points to the fact that our kids themselves are starting to see the downside of all this time spent on social media. Back in twenty twenty two, thirty six percent of kids said they spend too much time on social media. A year later, that number had dropped to twenty-seven percent. But in twenty-twenty-four, just one year later, the number jumped up to forty-five percent. We are hearing about more and more kids who are initiating steps on their own, by taking social media fasts, getting rid of their smartphones in favor of dumbphones, and getting off social media altogether. Parents, too much time spent on social media means too little time on other more important things, like the cultivating of a rich devotional life.

In this episode of the Truth From The Stand podcast, I'm joined by my buddy Cody D'Acquisto for a conversation that digs deep into more than just treestand setups and big bucks on the wall. Cody's fresh off the road and gearing up for his upcoming road show, and we break down what it means to really unplug from the noise and lean into the lessons the woods — and the mats — have to offer. We get into how elimination and identification shape our hunting decisions, why mastering the fundamentals matters whether you're tightening a choke in jiu jitsu or slipping an arrow through a buck's ribs, and how the right mindset can make or break your hunt before you ever lace up your boots. Cody shares what he's seeing out there, where he's headed next, and why the pressure we carry these days sometimes needs to be left at the truck. It's an honest look at discipline, flow state, and why the best lessons still come from just showing up, putting in the work, and staying present enough to enjoy the whole damn ride. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 449 Unplugging from tech is tougher — and more rewarding — than folks think. Road shows give Cody fresh lessons and real connections with hunters everywhere. Cutting dead spots and doubling down on good ground makes all the difference. Mastery, whether on the mats or in the stand, comes down to intent and time under tension. Staying present and trusting flow beats overthinking every time. Hunting is unpredictable — persistence and grit usually beat raw talent. Cody's fired up for the next hunt, the next roll, and the next chance to learn.
